Reasons to punch bricks walls: The Why The Giants Annoy You Thread

Listen, we have a lot to be happy about as Giants fans. The team is in the thick of a playoff race, which no sane person would have imagined before the season started. Tim Lincecum has maintained his amazing performance level, Matt Cain has finally learned how to win gotten some semblance of run support and cut down on his wildness, the bullpen actually has three stoppers (Romo, Affeldt, Wilson), Pablo Sandoval has developed beyond any reasonable expectation, Juan Uribe is better than bad, Eugenio Velez has been one of the better players on the team for the past two months (I know he hasn't been all that great if you look at the numbers, but in comparison to pretty much any other Giants player, he's been above average), and the team is in better shape than the Mets by leaps and bounds. If the Giants could somehow make the playoffs, nobody would be eager to play them, looking at the number of close games they find themselves in.

So, all that said, we here at McCovey Chronicles tend to take a pragmatic, nay, pessimistic view on things in regards to our beloved Gigantes. Bruce Bochy has mismanaged the lineup, Brian Sabean has mismanaged the roster, and the players have misplayed many plays.

My question to all of you is: What bothers you the most about the Giants at this very moment:

There used to be a Coke machine out behind left field, where you could get a bottle of Coke for a non-stadium price — a buck, or maybe a buck and a quarter. It was the one food product you could get in the stadium without feeling like you were being violated by the stadium tax. About three years ago, though, in one mean swoop they jacked it up to $3 or so.

I remember that

though even at $3, it’s still cheaper than at the concession stands.

It’s the mismanagement and poor treatment of younger players that gets me. I can deal with mistakes in the front office re: trades and bad contracts (these shouldn’t be allowed to have an impact on the field, if a player is bad, he shouldn’t play regardless of his contract or whom he was traded for) and in the longrun, batting order REALLY does not matter if nobody can hit. I hate watching the Giants hit situationally and in close games, and I think the young guys get, and have always received during Sabean’s regime, a raw deal.

If you look at the other MLB rosters, you will find they are ABSOLUTELY LITTERED with players who were good to great prospects, that did not play as well in the Minors as some Giants prospects, but they were called up and given a shot, struggled b/c that’s what happens, and stuck with until they became productive. Sabean does not allow this and he ruins young careers with his stupid AAA yo-yo. He did it to countless kids in the last 10-15 years, and now he’s doing it to Frandsen, Bowker, Lewis, etc.

Just stick the kids in a spot, tell them it’s theirs, and let them figure it out. They will.

Gah! It drives me NUTS!

And on the 6th day, God created base-ball, and Barry put one in the water, and it was good.

I voted for the second one, since those bad contracts weigh the team down for years, but in retrospect, those bad contracts are to some degree the result of the second option. And come to think of it, they sort of cause the second one too. It seems like management is only willing to play young hitters if they’re a sure-fire prospect, not realizing that sure-fire prospects are extremely rare. They’re not willing to give a lot of playing time to prospects who are unlikely to be above replacement level, but I’d think the vast majority of current MLB players (even the best of them) were at some point considered unlikely to be above replacement level. So they sign some gritty veterans who play at (or a bit below) replacement level, which leaves us with the lineups we’ve watched for the last few years… not just bad, but also uninteresting.

The day to day lineup stupidity blends into the mismanagement of the young players in my mind. They make some really inexplicable start-bench decisions and then that plays into the LOLineup they put out there.

Waiting for Giants and Niners to contend once more.

Some of the stuff Botchy does: you pulled Nate in the 8th inning of a tight ballgame to put Randy-noodle-arm-Winn in right field? huh? just makes me scream (ask the neighbors, it really does).

What really gets me is the feeling that Bowker, Guzman, Posey and even Frandsen (to a lesser extent) could outperform guys who start in front of them. Not only do I think the Giants would get superior production, but they’d also have an opportunity to better evaluate their young talent.

Of all the reasons for why I hope and pray that Neukom pulls the plug on Bochy after the season, this one stands at the top of the list for me.

by boolemaster on Sep 7, 2009 11:09 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

i voted for the 1st one, hands down

while having lolina as a cleanup hitter and the lolineups is annooying, i have come to expect it. signing people to crappy contracts is somethign that can’t really be controlled once the season starts. tradinng prospects for older players (alderson/barnes) is gambles you sometimes have to take, and those trades are KILLING us right now. but the mismangement of the young players drives me crazy, because botchy and sabean continue to say that they “will give them a shot when the time comes” or some other BS. they pretty much screwed the career of frandsen, are doing it with lewis and bowker, and it just makes me sad that it may well happen with posey. i have to say that the everyday lineup stupidity comes in a close second though

The first four choices in your poll!

The correct answer is all of the above. That being said E. is also true. You could run for office on any or all of the above.

It’s the way that the FO thinks that the first 20 ABs they see can tell them everything about a player. Randy Winn was great in 2005? He’ll always be great! Keep starting him! Bowker and Frandsen and Garko had low BAs at the beginning of their times with the team? Fuck ’em!

20 AB's for young players

500 for Winn, Renteria, etc etc.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

I am assuming the first 20 ABs they saw of the old players are from when they were good.

Yeah, I know,

but I think that’s more a sign of the mood at McC…. seasonal affective disorder from living in the Bay Area, perhaps?

Could also just be that Grant’s cynicism rubs off on everyone else. (Not that I would call that a bad quality)

I mean, I know you all love your team, it’s just that the site in general seems more pessimistic than a lot of SBN sites.

the management of the team is killing me right now, i really want bochy gone.

My thoughts on Bruce Bochy

I know we all watch the game every day, and he usually makes some sort of boneheaded move like double switching in the third or letting Rich Aurilia play. He frustrates me as much as anybody, believe me, but at this point in time I just dont think firing him is the best option. Managers do as much if not even more work off the field than on. Bochy has earned a reputation as a great manager, and players love him. That means, while he is maybe making stupid moves during games which, don’t get me wrong, are very annoying and sometimes hurt the team, he is managing the team very well off the field. That means talking to players about their problems, deciding when guys need days off and much, much more. The manager is the team leader, and firing him is probably the biggest thing you can do to shake up the team chemistry. We have heard from Lincecum and other players, and you can see it when you watch the game, that this teams chemistry is great. Maybe a new manager would have a Jim Tracy effect and the Giants would start playing great. But honestly,I dont a new manager would make a huge difference, and I think it would hurt more than anything. I think this off-season we dont re-sign him. I want him gone, but firing him now just doesnt seem smart to me.

F.

of course. The fact that the team is abysmal offensively. All the other veteran / lineup / contract /trade / Molina drudgery pales in front of the basic fact that this team has the worst offense in the NL.

Hard vote as all are true...

The Giants, (big sigh) not sure what to do with my Beloved Giants….Fire Bochey? Sabean is the problem. I think he looks at last years list of MLB players and says I wish I had that guy to play for me!" Then goes out and gives them millions of dollars to play "average’ for the Giants….Or as in the case this year “Below average”.

Sabean makes the call as to who givve the big money to. So who is to blame about this years sucky team? Lets just look at all the older non-productive people we have with LONG and expensive contracts……I blame GM and scouts and office managment for making such stupid and expensive deals for mediocre players….
