Reasons to be Cheerful: Optimism Thread

I'm reading a lot of negativity, and I can understand it after a tough loss, but things are actually looking pretty good. Let me list the ways:

Star-divide

1. We come home tomorrow for the beginning of a nine game homestand. (We're really, really good at home)

2. The rest of the season is 16 games at home and nine on the road.

3. The Rockies have 13 games at home and 12 on the road.  We kept hearing how their schedule was easier down the stretch, but that period has now passed.

4. We come home to play the pathetic Padres, and their ace is Kevin Correia! The rest of their staff is guys their own mothers haven't heard of.  The Rockies are playing four with the red hot Reds. (is that redundant?)

5. Brad Penny makes his first start before the home crowd. (Notice how close he seems to be with Lincecum? How do you get a multi year deal? Become best pals with their best player!)

6. Three games left with the Rockies, and they're all at home. We swept them last time when our 1-2-3 starters matched up with their 1-2-3 starters. This time they face our 1-2-3 again but we see their 3-4-5.

7. Huston Street is out!! Morales is a good pitcher, but everyone moves up a notch and this weakens their setup innings.

8. Freddy Sanchez, arguably our second best hitter returns tomorrow! (in case you've forgotten we got him last month in a trade with Pittsburgh. He hasn't been seen much since)

9. Still just two games out. This could have been a disastrous trip, playing two good teams on the road, while the Rockies played two creampuffs, but we're still right there.

Anyway, I think you see my point. The Giants' are in good shape right now, and the Rockies needed to build a bigger lead than they have right now to have held them off .  The wild card will be ours!

A comparison of schedules:

COL: vs. CIN (4), @SD (3), @SF (3), @AZ (3), vs. SD (3), vs. SL (3), vs. MIL (3), @LA (3)

SF: vs. SD (3), vs. LA (3), vs. COL (3), @ LA (3), @AZ (3), vs. CHI (4), vs. AZ (3), @SD (3)

I think we will be in good shape if we can stay within a game of the Rox after that last series in LA – but this could be difficult with a team that scores 8 runs in 6 games. Let’s aim to take 6 of the next 9 home games.

We can’t realistically sweep Rockies again. Even the biggest optimist in me says the best we can do is 2-1 vs the Rockies at home.

If we ever fall 3 games out (or more) I think this thing is over. What these 2 losses (today and the last game at PHI) did is give us zero margin of error coming up.

PS : I think the dodgers will clinch by the last series, and they will rest all their starters again COL. Those are not tough games for COL. We need to be ahead of them in the standings going into the last series.

I was impressed by a lot of the ABs Pablo had today. For the whole road trip, it seemed like he was getting himself out by trying to do too much while being given very little to do it with and today, he tapped into some inner zen and managed to keep himself from swinging at every goddamn thing they threw at him. It didn’t lead to any runs, but it was a good sign, IMO.

the only negative is that it was obvious that Milwaukee was pitching around him with Uribe in the cleanup spot. That’s going to tell Bochy that he can’t afford to give Molina any days off.

Prediction

I made this prediction on another thread, and stick by it despite the course of the game today. We are on course now for 89 wins, if we play at the same pct we have been; but given the schedule, I think 90-91 likely. = 5-6 from the 9 road games, 10-11 from the 15 home games. Our having Penny instead of the 5th starters we have had, and Sanchez instead of the 2nd basemen we have had, gives me this optimism about exceeding—and that, only slightly—our pct up to now. Given that we play the Rockies three games at AT&T, and that the d-g-s are floundering, I would say that we have an excellent chance to get a Wild Card spot, by passing either of those teams.

by campanari on Sep 6, 2009 8:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

meh

I expected 3-3 on that trip. What I didn’t expect is that the three games we lost would be so winnable. I don’t know if that is a good thing or not, I guess we will find out over the next few weeks.

by OTTOMATIC on Sep 6, 2009 9:10 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I'm also going to point out that this is the nature of the beast

with this pitching staff. Every game we lose will seem so “winnable”. And we can’t win them all.

What’s frustrating is the fact that we’ve played this tough, but the Rockies just don’t fucking lose. Ever. We didn’t lose ground on the dodgers. We didn’t lose ground on the Marlins. We gained ground on the Braves.

But we lost fucking 2 games to the God Damn Rockies.

by jctGamer on Sep 6, 2009 10:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

why should they lose? They played bad teams at home. They did what they’re supposed to do. It won’t be as easy for them on the road, and after these games with the Reds they have 21 games remaining, and 12 of them will be on the road.

But still I like their chances of losing on the road a lot more given that almost all of their players have an OPS of 200 to 300 points higher at home than on the road.

I was curious and checked the splits – only one of their regulars (Chris Ianetta) has a home/road split that high. One or two others are at or around 150 points difference.

Lots of reasons to be optimistic:

1) We may get to see a Buster Posey start (or at least a double switch) in the upcoming homestand (my guess is the Wednesday nooner)

2) I could have only dreamed of a series this good last time we were in Milwaukee. Seriously, do you guys remember the Wilson meltdown in June?

3) Even though we didn’t pull out this game, remember, we live in the Bay Area, and the Brewers are stuck in Milwaukee

4) I haven’t been this excited for an organized sport for at least a decade.

5) This is the first time I’ve watched a team and really enjoyed watching the pitching.

6) I’m going to two baseball games in a week for the first time since I was nine (‘93 season), and this time I won’t have to bring in a sleeping bag for the night game.

On the other hand, from the same article...
Veteran ESPN broadcaster Jon Miller, who also calls Giants games, believes a team that relies on its pitching can become vulnerable in the postseason.

“Look at Atlanta all those years with its great staffs,” he said. "Teams that have reached that level (postseason) give you determined, gritty at-bats. A lot of pitches get thrown, a lot of two-strike fouls. Six, seven, eight, nine-pitch at-bats are the norm rather than the exception.

“So, a team that relies heavily on its starting pitching how deep can they rely on those guys going that time of the year especially when they’ve thrown 230 innings already? To me, that’s difference. A team like the Phillies can put good pitching out there and put runs on the board — and cause your pitchers to leave an inning early.”

4) LOL Padres! Seriously, what happened to that organization? This puzzles me. It seemed like they used to so well run and they managed to steal Adrian Gonzalez and Chris Young from the Rangers. Then some prospects didn’t pan out and it seems like they have no idea what they’re doing. I know these are the extremes of the roller coaster ride that is running an MLB team, but it is still strange.
5) I seriously doubt we’re able to bring Penny back if his last start is a sign of things to come, but if his last start was the harbinger, damn am I excited.

Predictions are necessarily without the real information, i.e., the games haven’t been played yet, the opponents’ situations aren’t yet known for real, etc. We now HAVE real information! We now KNOW that we have an historic pitching capability! We now KNOW we are only 2 games out of postseason, and that the NL West is more up for grabs than expected! We know HAVE information, so those old predictions are WORTHLESS and should be ignored as we now have the knowledge we didn’t have then!

It is such a damn logical fallacy.

I doubt that the Rockies will lose more than 11 games the rest of the year. If that is the case, the Giants need to win 64 percent of their remaining games to tie them. A two game lead with 25 to go is tougher than it looks. It can be overcome, but I expect the Giants to make a good run and then break hearts.

Its not just good enough to be in a lot of close games.

You have to win a few more of them, especially on the road. Outhitting your opponents but not outscoring them. Giants probably have the record for lead off doubles and triples, without the runner advancing for the inning.

Does anyone keep track of squandered opportunities? Is there a stat that would show if another team has stranded more base runners than the Giants over the last year, 2 years, 3 years… 6 years?

I’m perfectly happy with the overall season so far. My pre-season hope of a .500 record is well within reach. Each particular game tends to be excruciating, but overall I’ve been been pleased and occasionally thrilled. I’ve seen Tim Lincecum pitch in person, not just over a choppy video stream from ten thousand miles and a day away. I got autographed baseballs from him, Zito and Johnson, and gave the Johnson one to my dad while he’s going through chemo. and this year i got to see the first no-hitter by the giants since before i was born, and share it with the guy who got me into the giants fandom in the first place. Of course after all this contending I’ll be sad if and when they don’t make the playoffs. I doubt they will. But I am quite satisfied with the season they’ve presented so far.

As the saying goes, a good team wins 2/3 at home, and goes .500 on the road. Our boys did that. It sucks that those losses were as close as they were (and only going 3-3 after giving up just 9 runs in six games at Philly and Milwaukee is profoundly frustrating), but it ain’t that bad overall.

+ We’ve helped the rest of the NL West step on the throats of the Cubs, Marlins, and Braves. We’ve killed their swordsman, so obviously we’ve studied.

+ What if (what if!?) we gain a game on LA in this series? I could see Scherzer and Haren beating Padilla and Garland. That puts us 4.5 back with a 3-game series at home. So dream big! The right kind of sweep could knock the Dodgers into a death spiral.

+ If the Reds can split the four-game set in Denver (a tall order, yes, but the exercise in optimism is pointless if we don’t win and/or LA and /or COL don’t lose), that’s a game and a half lopped off that 2-game lead. Striking distance.

+ Our season has been ‘over’ a dozen times already. By the time we make the playoffs (Yes we can!), our hitters will have accrued extensive amounts of Battle-Tested Gamer Clutch Grit™ and will thus be ready for anything.

+ We’re in this! Chaaaaarge!
