A Message To McCovey Chronicles - Lighten The Hell Up.
I've had it with your overblown sense of etiquette.
If ANYONE is wondering what this pertains to - just do an McC search for "timmy cain:" and read the comments.
People come with enthusiasm , they want the team to succeed , and you want them to say WIN in your preapproved fashion...and if they express their support in a fashion YOU deem wrong for whatever ethereal reasons YOU'VE conjured up , you shit all over them. Never mind that they want what you want - they can express it like THIS but not like THAT - because we ALL know the real world effect virtual symbols have.
Here , let me bring up some pics of the 1906 earthquake - just to shake up your day!
I'm sorry , but really...fuck this.
I can enjoy the game just fine without the condescension. I know it wasn't aimed at me , but you've done it to enough others that it's not something I want to be associated with any longer.
This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Sort of wish this would sort of go away.
I’m almost SURE there’s a MCC Conduct Manual/Bag of Important Sharp Points around here somewhere , but I can’t seem to find one. Maybe a helpful Mod…or even the Chief himself…could show me where it is (I think an appropriate place for one would be in the Profile Format area , but I’m no tech wizard…)

Just looked through four pages of 2,000-something Timmy Cain comments and all I see is “I blame Timmy Cain.” What did he actually do? By any chance did he say that we’d win this game thereby jinxing us?
Or does this have to do with Fred Lewis?
Or is it the guy who said (paraphrased) “You nerds have never engaged in physical activity requiring teamwork?” Because if so, I have no apologies.
But things are getting a little negative. When a perfectly articulate user comes on and posts something about their personal experience with the Giants, and people jump on him or her because they’re tired of reading that genre, it’s a little discouraging. I guess people are gun-shy because of the spate of “OMG GET MANNY” and “trade this for that and that for this” posts that overwhelm sometimes, but I think it’s a little over the top at this point.
Lecture over, back to the earthquake pics and (god love ’em) animated gifs. I guess gifs are the new LOLcats?

He posted a picture of a broom at the beginning of the game and then again when the score was tied at 1 in the 9th or 10th inning (IIRC it was like RIGHT before Uribe messed up the bunt). People reacted the way MCC generally does when there’s a jinx situation.

What the hell’s a jinx? Does it have substance? Is it real?
Absolutely not. It’s thin , it’s tired , it’s ridiculous.
It’s not occurrences but how we react to them that give them positive/negative merit….
I’d give you folks more credit for being sensible but time and again you’ve reacted in the same fashion.

The McCoven do probably have a tendency to overreact to superstition-related things during GDT. Baseball fans can be really superstitious – this shouldn’t come as any surprise.
Does Timmy Cain deserve the dogpile he got after the loss? No, probably not. But, I mean, you post something like a gigantic image of a broom during the late innings of a tie game on the road (the type of game the Giants have lost many times this season) and it’s probably not going to go over well.

Why does it matter...
…whether it’s a road game?
What inning it is?
whether the game is tied?
These are your superstitions. Because others don’t hold that insubstantiality to be true is a flaw in their perception of reality?
To heap abuse on someone posting a freaking image is to bestow them with powers far beyond that of the physical world.
Ya know...ignorance really IS bliss.

McCovey Chronicles , on the other hand...

Because that’s not really a situation where a win is anywhere near guaranteed and the Giants probably have a much better chance to lose the game than they do to win it? So it seems a bit hubristic to be posting sweep images in that situation?
And can I just say – the “lighten up” message goes both ways. If you really think the jinx/superstition dogpiles are full of actual frothing anger and hatred for the people accused of doing the jinxing, you’re taking it a bit too seriously.
If it’s bothering people a lot, then a moratorium can be put on it. As I’m sure most people have noticed, the community is growing at a pretty astronomical rate. Clashes between new guys unfamiliar with the general way MCC runs and oldbies who are, yes, often very interesting in proving their “in-status” are inevitable.

Not to pick on you jponry, but since you’re involved (maybe even implicated?) in this discussion, I used you as a reference point to show how it all comes full circle… From he can “fuck himself” to he doesn’t deserve the dogpile. Natto’s quote was just a nice summation (even though he was referring to Fielder’s celebration.
Anyway, there it is… we’re not plugged directly into GDTs, we’re consciously typing comments (though some would argue the term “conscious”). The process is fun. Cheering, hissing on GDTs is fun. Giving shit, taking shit on GDTs is fun. And at the end of the day, most of us seem to be cool with it and go on about life… because it’s a friggin’ Game Day Thread!
Hell, even Timmy Cain and GiantsBabe offered themselves for “blame”… (because it’s part of the fun… duh)

Yeah, exactly, I mean – I’ve always just thought of it as not-really-serious ragging on one another during a game. Like I said, if people take it more seriously than that, then that’s on me and the other people who do it, and I apologize. We can discourage it in the future, though I’m not going to police the GDT for anything more than I do now (NSFW images and the use of obviously offensive language.)

anyone who believes that posting a broom before the game is what cost us the game is pretty silly. I would have thought that the anger directed at him was pretty much in jest and not with real malice. I can see why Victor is upset though. Even though he says it was not directed at him, he posted that picture of Medders giving up a HR right before the Giants’ blew that extra inning game to the Rockies, and received the exact same treatment.

Natto is like one of the nicest mods ever. But that’s the nature of GDTs, people are irrational and say things in the heat of moment. I know it’s not the best course of action, but I just generally avoid in-progress GDTs.
I see your point Vic, but people on this site have been very friendly to me outside of GDTs so I try not to take things too seriously. In any case, I hope you don’t leave, the “we support Edgar” group doesn’t have very many members.

The funny thing is that everyone thinks of the things that get “jinxed” at some point or another. I guarantee many of us were thinking “Alright Giants, let’s sweep the Brewers today” before the game started today. The only people that end up being “guilty” are the ones that actually articulate those thoughts in typing in the gameday threads.
I don’t have a problem with people yelling “Jinx!” in a non-threatening way, but I do agree with you that when a user gets attacked after the game and people start blaming him/her for the loss, it’s a little unnecessary.

I was at a certain Game 6 in Anaheim with a buddy of mine, and the Giants were up 5-0. While in line for a beer, he started mouthing off to the Angels fans that he wasn’t sure what size World Series ring he’d need to get.

My wife had a friend that came over to the house during games 2 and 3 when we lost, but had stayed away during 1, 4, and 5. Before G6, I told her to stay away for a couple days. She showed up in the 6th inning that night, and I was PISSED! I told her to not come back on G7 day, but she did. I gave her such a rash of shit that night while we watched the Giants lose Game 7, and after the game. She has never forgiven me.
Nor I, her.
And on the 6th day, God created base-ball, and Barry put one in the water, and it was good.

He had a couple of good at-bats. The one time when he hit the ball to RF but the Brewers’ RF made a nice play comes to mind.

Yeah, the bunt was awful but he had two very nice ABs where he hit the ball hard the other way.

Well, if we're being honest
As Lars alluded to, your reaction seemed to be to rather passive aggressively use gay perjoratively several times in the GDT (after someone else had done so and gotten a dogpile of “Uh…”) Not really sure what you were going for with that.
Again, I’ll say that I think a bit more real anger and hatred are being attached to the dogpile comments than were actually intended – but, as I’m sure I’ve said before in discussions about slurs and the like, intent matters far less than how people take it. If people are offended by it, then it’s something that needs to be considered and toned down, certainly. But I don’t know that calling people out like this and flouncing is the right way to go about it.

There is a difference
It’s one thing to do it inadvertantly once and another to repeat it. U do it once and ppp tell j to stop u need fm expect that the next time h do it u are going to get shit on
he made the choice to ignore the warning. It’s the ultimate " I do what I Want u can’t tell me what to do"
if that’s the attitude going kn, the the resulting doglike also falls into the “I do what I want on the Internet u can’t tell me what to do” and all is fair in that game

This is the sort of thing that happens when an established community gets an influx of new people. The new people do something or other that violates the unwritten rules of the community for awhile people put up with it… and then one day you have an incident and all the pent up vitriol comes spilling out upon the head of a person who is probably wondering wtf they did, because other people have done it before… etc etc…
but the community had just reached a breaking point and since Botchy wasn’t close enough to vent the angst upon someone else got it.

There’s a fair amount of “get off my lawn!” impulses going on … I have them when I complain that there are wayyyyy too many comments to keep up with. Who the hell ARE all these people and where are they coming from!?! I liked things to be the way they were, back when I could keep up, but I also really like some of the new posters and you can’t have it both ways. So I try to keep the kvetching down to a dull minimum in my head. But it seems like that’s some of what’s happening too.

This brings up a question for me
Does anyone here ACTUALLY believe that jinxes exist? I certainly don’t. But some (like, say, not talking about a no hitter in progress) I follow as a matter of tradition as opposed to actual belief. Others, I might mention in a joking way, and I’m pretty sure others are joking too – for example, when Sandoval hit his walk-off home run some time back, I was taking out the trash and I missed it, so a bunch of people told me I should take the trash out more often.
It’s always been my assumption that nobody here, or at least very few people here, legitimately believe in jinxes and when they yell and scream about them it’s largely in a joking/sarcastic manner. It seems sort of silly to me to get upset when someone says, “OMG I HATE YOU YOU DIE NOW!” when it’s (a) not serious and (b) an established part of the way conversations go in such situations – and not just on MCC.
Of course, jokes and sarcasm can go to far, cross lines, and lead to offense and hurt feelings, and if we’ve crossed that point this is a worthwhile conversation to have. Although “lighten the hell up” is a kind of silly way to put it in that case.
If people really do believe in jinxes and really do hate people for posting a gif of a broom and really do blame those people for losses, that’s pretty ridiculous and dumb.

I don’t believe in them, but it can be fun to go with tradition. It’s sorta become a reflex to respond to jinxes with a bit of craziness. Some lines you just don’t cross, i definitely shat on the guy sitting behind me for talking about Sanchez’s no-hitter in the 7th inning. he didn’t know, so it was all right, but i think people deliberately crossing lines that traditionally aren’t supposed to be crossed in our game are looking to pick a fight.

I believe in not talking about a no-hitter in the late innings. I believe you should never smart off to the opposing team’s fans before you’ve wrapped up your World Series win. And if I were there, I’d probably have been a little irritated with someone mentioning a sweep before a series was over in the middle of a playoff chase…

Life is too short for this shit, Vic. You’re one one my favorite people here, but if you gotta go, you gotta go. I wouldn’t expect you to stay just for the LOLs when the GRRs – which are equal parts in my book, and both part of a complete breakfast – and their butterflies get you down. Yeah, it sucks that, as humans, we sometimes tap into our more base and primal emotions and let those lie roughshod over sense and sensibility. It’s a struggle each man and woman must contend with. We become cultured and educated only to have our most animalistic impulses catered to in Big Biz’s offering: professional sports, lurid gossip shows, highlights of crass and brainless twits for fun and profit, wonton displays of greedy and arrogance for our consumption. It all tries to drag us down. And a lot of the time, it works. We’re all human beings, we’re all going to die, and it doesn’t mean shit, what they’re selling, what we’re buying, why we fight, why we are made to sink low when we could fly high. I get it, Vic. We, as a species are better than this. And it’s regrettable that we fall prey to it. But since we are all one asteroid hit, one fault line slip, one loose nuke, one drinken swerve, one blocked vien, one shot to the brain — we’re all sooooo lose to biting it, is it the best to highlight that we’re all just animals wallowing in shit? “Despite all my rage I am still just a rat in a cage”
Anyways. Sorry if you were disappointed. I like you lots. I like everyone here – even SFGuy is growing on me! Hope you don’t leave, but this shit happens. And will continue. Until we’re all dead. So. What.

WOW!
Never a dull moment in McC land!
I have to say I was hesitant to comment on McC because of the amount of negativity that pervades many discussions and the disrespectful manner in which many choose to disagree. I finally decided to post here because despite the derogatory comments, there are a lot of intelligent, well informed opinions espoused relating to the Giants. Also, I genuinely laugh out loud at many of the pictures, opinions and tangents that present themselves on a daily basis! So, it’s fun to participate. That is a direct tribute to the fact that anybody can post here. However, the best attribute of internet chat rooms, blogs, etc. is also it’s biggest drawback. Sites such as this one provide people an opportunity to express their opinions and engage with strangers who share a common interest. I, for one, have very few friends who share my passion for baseball, especially the Giants. So, what better place to express my opinions than on a site that is meant for that exact purpose? However, the biggest downfall to communities such as this one is the excessive amount of anonymity. I wouldn’t know a single one of you if we passed each other on the street. Oftentimes, what this means, is that people feel they can say whatever they want without consequence. So, while we all cherish the notion that we can go somewhere to express our opinions and have others respond, we also have to balance that out by acknowledging that many people do not govern their comments. IMO, when posters respond in a disrespectful manner, they have crossed the line.
We all share a love of the Giants or else we wouldn’t visit this site every hour of the day. Additionally, this has been one of the most exciting, emotional, gut-wrenching seasons in recent memory so tensions are running a little higher than I would imagine they have over the last few years of suck that has been Giants baseball. People should realize that as much as we would like, we have zero control over how the team performs. The only contribution I make is that I go to a few games each year and buy beer and sheboygans (mmm…a sheboygan, I could go for one of those right now!). So, when it comes down to it, if someone wants to post a gif of a broom and you don’t like it, tell them so respectfully or, better yet, IGNORE them.

A lot of us do know each other, though. Hell, I’ve had a McCoven over at my house. If we’re jerks, I think that’s just because either that’s who we really are, or because we care a lot and emotions go nuts.
I kind of appreciate the fact that it’s okay to tell people they’re being stupid if they are. A lot of other places, it’s practically forbidden to ever say anything remotely rude or insulting to another user. That, in my experience, just leads to this stuff boiling under the surface and people end up really resentful of each other.

I figured someone would respond to that portion of what I wrote. Don’t ever underestimate the ability of someone on this site to point out a flaw in an argument!
If you’re a jerk, then there probably isn’t much that can be done about it. However, there really is no excuse for being a jerk just because you “care a lot and emotions go nuts.” Also, don’t forget that you just because you know some of the people on this site, you don’t know everyone. Additionally, what is stupid to you might not be to someone else. Furthermore (damn, this is fun!), what exactly is the point of saying something “rude or insulting”? Does it make you feel better? I don’t mean to wax philosophical here, but there are far better ways to disagree with someone effectively. We’re talking baseball here, not personal relationships.

…so I seriously doubt that anything that important is “boiling under the surface.”
by boolemaster on Sep 6, 2009 9:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I didn’t intend to “point out a flaw in your argument,” as you say. In fact, I really don’t see anything remotely confrontational about my reply. I politely disagreed with your comment about the anonymity of the Internet and then I talked about how, in my experience, on online forums where folks aren’t allowed to be caustic with each other, it only makes things worse. Tensions are going to happen in any social situation, online or offline, and all I was saying is that having a release valve is a good idea in my experience. Here, that often happens in gameday threads. Rule one of MCC Gameday threads – or, I’m sure, gameday threads on any other such site – People say ridiculous things in the heat of the moment. That’s the nature of the beast. Sometimes they really mean them, sometimes they don’t. If you have a problem with that, the gameday thread is probably not the best place for you – not because I think that makes you a bad person, but because it’s going to drive you crazy.
What exactly is the point of saying soemthing rude or insulting? Well, you’re being responding in kind to an idiot or an asshole. Maybe it’s not the most productive way to handle the situation, but it happens. If (to use an example that popped up recently) somebody jumps into a discussion for the purpose of making racist jokes, I’m going to tell them to fuck off. If (to use a common example) somebody starts making a stupid argument that’s been made a thousand times before, and thinks they’re a genius for coming up with it, I’m going to tell them it’s a stupid argument that’s been heard a thousand times before. Maybe more caustically than that. There’s a term for this: calling a spade a spade. Does it go over the line sometimes? Sure.
But beyond that, there isn’t always a point, but, as I was trying to say: this is a really passionate community full of people who are very emotionally invested in the Giants. Maybe to an unhealthy degree – definitely to an unhealthy degree, sometimes – but that’s another discussion. Like I said, we care a lot. Any time you’re spending time talking about something you’re so invested in, you’re going to have disagreements, personality conflicts, and, yes, things are going to blow up sometimes. It’s inevitable, and whethere there’s “a point” or not, it’s going to happen. That’s not a McCovey Chronicles thing – that’s a basic human interaction thing. While my THE RAGE reputation is a joke, it happens to me, too, and I have no problem calling someone out – including folks who’ve been here a long time – if I think they’re full of shit. I also have no problem being called out if I’m out of line. That’s how it works.
Also:
We’re talking baseball here, not personal relationships.
I really do have to disagree with this. For one thing, as I’m sure you’ve noticed, we talk about a hell of a lot more than baseball here. Often it’s goofy stuff, but that’s not always the case. I came to MCC to announce my daughter’s birth back in December, for example. tk has written very movingly about her health issues in the past. Yeah, we talk about baseball here, but it’s also a social setting, and yes, there are personal relationships. I consider a number of folks on MCC to be friends, and I know I’m hardly alone in that. It’s not as though people aren’t going to form personal relationships, positive or negative, just because this is a baseball site, or just because it’s the Internet. Hell, I met my wife online. Well, sort of.
Also, despite your next comment, it’s obvious just from this thread’s existence that things do boil under the surface. When I used that phrase, I was talking about other places I’ve participated in, but obviously it happens here, too – if vic wasn’t angry about how things have gone, he wouldn’t have started this discussion in the first place!
With that all having been said: like I said in a previous comment, it’s possible that things can and/or have gone over the line at times, and if that’s happened it’s totally reasonable to have this discussion, flesh things out, and try to keep it together as a community.

wait a sec, just because condescension/judgment/hatred is spread on other sites that doesn’t make it alright if you do it to a lesser degree here. the garbage i just read re: WoW, though humorous, is truly pathetic, and only serves to strengthen the point that there really is no place anywhere for responses like that.
for example, i’m sure many of you were privy to alot of the hatred/blind rage associated with barack obama’s campaign for the presidency that came from the far right. that was far worse than anything i’ve read here. but, does that make it ok then to say whatever you want here? i don’t think so.

I don’t think McC is that bad either. I suppose it’s a matter of what you have previously experienced. IRC back in the 90’s was like the wild west. There were flame wars, DOS attacks, ICMP bombs, and hostile takeovers. Compared to ole Undernet and Dalnet, the wildest conflicts on SBN seem, to me, more like an out of control PBS pledge drive.
Of course that doesn’t excuse bad behavior, but with the size of this community now, I don’t often step in and say anything about someones faux-pas. I figure there are enough others who will. 109… 109….109…
by Merope on Sep 7, 2009 7:50 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
ok…i’ll try to keep this short. i didn’t see anything confrontational either with your response. i knew what you responded to might draw a response and i wasn’t at all surprised, that’s all, nothing more. i think we may just have to respectfully disagree on some points. that said, i totally agree with you on others, especially regarding the passionate fanbase that exists here. i definitely never have a problem with someone being called out but, frankly, alot of people say ridiculous things on this site solely because they can, and i think that can be directly attributed to the anonymity that exists in the blogosphere.
finally, my reference to baseball vs. personal relationships is solely related to people getting worked up re: brooms, black cats, witches, full moons, etc… and, i will grant you that just as people shouldn’t say shit that is liable to offend, others probably need to take what is said here in the heat of the moment with a grain of salt. i will counter, though, that this fanpost is really more of a plea from a passionate participant to lament the absurdity of spreading vitriol at others over a superstition. i don’t doubt that many fine relationships have been formed as a result of this site. that is one of the wonderful byproducts of the internet era.
by boolemaster on Sep 6, 2009 11:03 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Like I said before, I really don’t think that very many people who post here legitimately believe in any of these superstitions. Some might, but for the most part I think it’s a joke that sometimes goes over the top and people get hurt feelings as a result.
And, as some other folks have pointed out, there’s some preexisting dislike for the way Timmy Cain participates in gameday threads, so some of that probably came out through this whole brouhaha. I wasn’t there today, though, so I can’t say for sure.

All I'll say is...
I generally don’t enjoy the game threads; I’ve tried participating, but they become the internet equivalent of too many people talking at once…discussions are rare if not impossible, and they often have a lot of questionable language and reactions, which I credit towards increased emotion from the situations involved.
But I don’t complain. I just don’t go in unless I’m ready to deal with it. And if I’m not, I stop.
I haven’t read the GT in question, but I can imagine from other ones, but I think it’s a lot of overreaction on both sides. Talking about jinxes are fun, and yes, the instigator of a jinx deserves good-natured ribbing…and I don’t doubt the line of ‘good-natured’ was crossed repeatedly and without prejudice. That being said, a ‘change or else I don’t want to be here anymore’ is a pretty extreme reaction. Said with my usual bluntness….this is the internet; wear a cup.
Just my opinion.

Agreed
I visit the GTs as something to do while watching games on tv, and I enjoy the camaraderie… but they are more dull now than a year ago or even earlier in the season. You put your finger on it: too many people talking at once. Also, the swearing is just so much bad writing and grunting— and I swear all the time in real life. I love swearing in real life. It’s just that in writing, it looks so stupid and ignorant.
25 people all typing “STFD” after strikeouts— not entertaining or informative. It would be cooler if everyone on the GT could assume that everyone else on the GT is also following the game, so we don’t ALL have to say the exact same thing after EVERY pitch or event. I think we may safely assume everyone feels “yay” for routine good things that happen for the Giants and “boo” for bad things that happen. Routine stuff doesn’t cry out for YOUR SPECIFIC reaction, let alone dozens of the same abbreviations.
It has become totally formulaic. I personally would love it if people would govern themselves— if you’re not making a good joke, a good observation, asking a question, or furthering an ongoing discussion (about any topic, I don’t care), then please consider not posting every single thing that crosses your mind.
I fear it is going to get worse now that the roll calls are posted— if there’s now a sense of competition to make the leaderboard, it’s just going to get worse.
And yes, I will now proceed to tie a new onion to my belt and wonder where the hell this idiot Herbert Hoover is leading our beloved 48 states.

I never said "irrelevant."
In fact, I specifically said it’s fine with me if discussion is “on any topic, I don’t care.” What I am talking about is the signal-to-noise ratio, and it has gotten way too low in recent months, what will all the identical oft-repeated comments/acronyms, the little verbal burps rather than any interesting idea or comment. (And nobody can seriously claim that reading a string of “STFD’s” is interesting.)
Relevance is far less important to me than valuable or meaningful or interesting or funny or entertaining or …

I hope you don’t leave over whatever happened today (I wasn’t around).
You know what?
They Giants have a historically inept offense, which drives us all to swear too much and get into pointless arguments with one another about the relative merits of Eugenio Velez vs. Fred Lewis.
And yet the Giants went 3-3 on a very tough road trip (let’s not forget they were 4-14 in their last 18 games in Cheeseland before this weekend).
They’re two games out of the wild card, with three games against the Rockies at the Big Phone remaining.
My friend went to Vegas back in March; the over/under on Giants wins this season was 79. He bet the over. He’s going back to Vegas this weekend to (hopefully) collect his winnings.
Maybe it’s that I just watched the “Glee” pilot online, so I’m in a good mood. Optimism Week begins now, y’all. Post as many broom pics as you want. Don’t stop believin’.

Seriously though, he’s been around a little while – I think he was aware of the tradition of jinx phobia and posted in spite or even because of it. If you purposely post a picture that is in defiance of what passes for a social norm around here, and the thing you are supposed to not jinx happens, you should expect to be shat upon. I think he knew the score and that’s why he seemed to take it so well.

Victor’s right. We need to lighten up, and ease up on people who don’t do things “our way.” I didn’t post my first comment until 3 months of reading every single fanpost, fanshot, and main post by Grant because I was positively fucking scared of you guys. To some extent, I’m still scared of writing something that you guys don’t like, don’t find funny, or take offense at. This will be my 1,848th comment, and I’m still shy here.
This is a wonderful community. You guys are funny, and smart, and express yourselves well. However, MCC’s one glaring flaw is that it is not very welcoming. The result is massive dog piles on anybody who doesn’t fit in. Some of them are entertaining, and could even be deserved, but there are times when people cross the line, getting too aggressive on people who don’t deserve it.
There’s my 2 cents.

I think you’ve got a good point, but there really has to be a sort of line. I mean, we can’t just allow n00bs to come in and make MCC like the comments on ExtraBaggs or MLB.com. There’s being welcoming and there’s being a door-mat. Some comments and fanposts, frankly, deserve a dogpile.
That said, there definitely has been a tendency to jump too quickly on innocent comments by non-regular posters, especially since the blog community has grown in the past few months. It hasn’t happened much lately but for a stretch last year, it seemed like every single fanpost/diary got hijacked within like 10 minutes, sometimes undeservedly. That was pretty bad. Now, it doesn’t happen as much but you’ll see fanposts that people disagree with get a resounding pile of "No"s rather than any actual attempt to start discussion with them. And sometimes, it’s TakeAGiantStepAndGo posts, which don’t deserve anything more than that. But sometimes, yeah, it’s a new guy who wants to talk baseball and it’s way harsh to respond like that.
So yeah, thanks for making this comment. (Can I just say… I was shy as hell for my first few months here too?)

"You guys are not very welcoming."
I wouldn’t put it so starkly. There are times when this community is harsh on new posters. It is true. Sometimes it is unwarranted. I agree when you say “but there are times when people cross the line, getting too aggressive on people who don’t deserve it.”
But I think that we definitely should not go completely the other way. This is one of the best communities on the internet and many of us are proud of it. We absolutely should have standards. It is when we break those standards ourselves (the vitriol aimed at Vic or Timmy Cain about the jinx images) or when we go overboard on protecting those standards (the myriad hijacks earlier this year) that we start to go downhill. There are times when we need to check ourselves, definitely. So I think this fanpost has a lot of value. We need to check ourselves a bit with the way things have been going lately.
On the other hand, I think it’s wrong to say that this community isn’t very welcoming. I know I felt quite welcome when I was a new poster. I have seen many new posters since I have joined be welcomed, as well. But one thing you do need to have to be a part of this community is thick skin. And I feel that there is nothing wrong with that.

You also need to have more to add to the community than saying such deep thoughts as, “Your obviously a faggot,” or some such nonsense. I for one would never welcome people such as that, and neither should anybody else, if you ask me. Those types of people are out there, and when they do show up here, I always think it’s a great thing that this community will run them off or make them change their approach.
So I applaud a less-than-welcoming-all-the-time community.

Online Community Not Very Welcoming?
Yeah, sometimes people get dogpiled, sometimes for good reason and sometimes not. I’m all for being nice whenever/wherever possible, but at the same time, is it fair that this place has to be 100% suitable for everyone? Part of the great thing about the ’net is that there can be specialized groups/spots such as this one.
As much as I love this place, and as good/funny of a writer I think Grant is, especially when covering the Giants, as much as I enjoy the conversation here, how good I think the mods are doing, etc., it’s still just a group of people — people who I don’t think want to be looked up to/viewed as intimidating.
I’m probably the last person that should be talking like this since I’m not a very regular poster (and I think a lot of my posts are actually kind of dumb or just not funny), but I think I’ve been reading for long enough, and if anyone is seriously concerned about not fitting in on a message board, being intimated by the person who started it or the mods, then maybe it’s time to take a step back.
Let’s try not to take this stuff so seriously… I think in the end, if you’re seriously following the Giants and following the discussion here, you’re just another wacko and should fit in in fine.

This. When I first seriously showed up I was all earnest and wanting to add a voice I felt wasn’t well represented, but c’mon, I have no skin whatsoever. So I decided I was adding nothing and really just allowing myself to become the very caricature I was trying to redefine. To enjoy myself here and to enjoy the hilarity that are the GDTs, I found a role and stuck to it.

Something this thread made me think about
As has been mentioned, MCC has been growing at an exponential rate lately. I was just looking at a gameday thread from this time of year in 2007 – there were 216 comments for the whole game. Also xanthan had an image for his sig. LOL xanthan.
Anyway, the gameday threads seem to be nearing a bursting point where they’re just going to become impossible to follow if we keep growing like this. So, uh: what do we do? Is there some way to better manage gameday threads so that they don’t make all of our heads explode?
I suppose it’ll probably self-correct, maybe – things will get unmanageable, so people will get frustrated and give up, and then there won’t be such a crazy amount of comments anymore. But that would suck because probably a lot of people I like and who contribute a lot would be among those who give up and leave.

GDT are unmanageable if you try to go through and read them after a game, but if you’re in them at the time, it’s not that bad, I don’t think. I would, uh, highly recommend not going through and reading GDT after a game…

I’ve tried that – it’s impossible. Unless we could write some sort of “STFD” filter – that could cut the posts by at least 18%.
But yeah – during a game, not so bad.

I agree. Didn’t realize that I was missing so much of the games because I was too busy looking at the laptop screen trying to keep up with the GDTs. No wonder I started to actually understand these obscure stats discussed here, because I spend more time looking at them, rather than the game :-)

Well, as to gameday threads
It’s partly because there’s more people. But, come on, 216 for the whole game? jponry could beat that by herself.
I think the number of posts are getting out of control. But I have no ideas as to how to fix that (both in gameday threads and other threads)

I know it's kind of why we have the GTD's in the first place
But maybe we can cut down on the STFD-style comments. Every single strikeout gets like 30 of those. Now even when I’m following the thread during the game, every few minutes I just do shift-A, otherwise I’d have to read 200 identical comments.

Yes, it's dull. And it's not TRULY people's reactions, anyway.
The reaction was the impulse you actually had while watching the event. The TYPING of it and clicking “post” is not the actual reaction, but a conscious pose to express that reaction. That’s not the same as an authentic reaction.

The Giants need to get rid of all these strikeout-type pitchers they have, and the number of “STFD” comments will dwindle. Problem solved!

One suggestion: everyone use more discretion and ask whether comment is really worth making
Protip: “STFD” isn’t worth saying, especially when 20 other people will do it, too. The automatic “FINISH HIM” on strike 2— waaaaaay past its expiration date. All the formulas and tropes would be worth rethinking.

See, I think it would be HILARIOUS if one person were to do all those things whenever the situation arose.
Like if you said “FINISH HIM” on all the strike 2 counts and if JPonry said “STFD” on all the K’s or good plays— hilarious. I would look at the game and think, “This is a Natto/JPonry moment,” and you would say your line, and it would be really funny. It’s not funny when 25 other people muscle in on your action.

I think discussion on anything is positive. Generally, only good things come from talking about things. However, what I would hate to see come out of the gameday thread discussions are guidelines of what it and what is not permissable (or even preferable) in gameday threads.
by Lars The Wanderer on Sep 8, 2009 12:13 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I personally think the guidelines for GDT should stay the same as they are now
1. Nothing NSFW
2. No extremely off color comments or slurs (anyone who was in the GDT over the weekend more or less saw some examples of what I mean by that.)

I agree. Trying to get too granular on what is or is not permissable is just stifling. What happens now in gameday threads has developed organically. I’d hate to see that change.

And JP nails it...
I will occasionally post in the GDT’s, but they are often such a train wreck of random interjection I get distracted from the actual events of the game. There have been games this year when that was not a bad thing.
I am not a prude, nor am I offended easily, but if I wanted to read comments laced with expletives I would just go over to one of the yahoo boards. This community first attracted me with the high level of knowledge, its varied personalities, and then the dick jokes.

Discussion, yes. But that's decreasingly what is going on.
Nobody is talking about guidelines or permissibility, so those are strawman issues. I would join you (and your marauding hordes) in resisting any enforced restriction on speech that isn’t NSFW or the obvious offensive slurs.
But it isn’t a “discussion” when people are just throwing stuff out there into a cacophony and not exchanging any meaningful data. I love the off-topic stuff; I love the on-topic stuff; I like the humor, the brilliant humor and artistry of the Photoshopped pics and all that stuff. And I respect that ritual plays in people’s lives, so if 25 people get off on saying “STFD” as a ritual (nobody really hearing anyone else and without regard to the fact that sheer volume of that makes noise that drowns out the signal of the good stuff), then so be it. I don’t expect the world to conform to my desires, and I’ll avoid stuff I don’t enjoy and stick with what I do enjoy.
But I think there is always a place for someone to sound a bell for more thoughtfulness and to take a second to consider what’s going on if it affects others. If everyone goes back to doing the exact same thing, that’s perfectly fine. But if people say — as one person did above — gee, I never thought of that effect it’s having on others and I’ll stop, then that’s a great thing, too. More thoughtfulness is always good.
If nobody can hear what anyone else is saying because there’s too much noise in the room, that ain’t discussion.
Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.
by Mayor of 311 on Sep 8, 2009 1:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I posit that by making people wary of what to post in GDTs, discussion will eventually be reduced to monologue. Like it or not, this blog already has a reputation for snobism and cracking down on STFDs or FINISH HIMs from anyone other than Jporny/Natto (to use your example above) is only going to make that reputation worse; especially when taking into acocunt their mod status. I know you probably didn’t mean it that way. However, if this discussion is going to result in any good whatsoever, we need to be clear on what needs fixing.
Overall, I guess I feel that looking for “meaningful” discussion in a GDT is kinda like looking for posters of older women on Walrusman’s bedroom walls.
