I actually really like him, I think he is a great player. Also I live in LA and when the Dodgers played the Brewers the press decided to go after Fielder solely for his weight and it was completely class less. Every single he hit, they would reference him setting off the richter scale or eating a base. The first time I didnt mind, but the 8th Fielder attack of the article just seemed strange and uneeded. I don’t know, but the baseless attack made me start to like Fielder

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

by TexasRanger on Sep 6, 2009 7:13 PM PDT up reply actions

His slide into 2nd today probably would’ve made them go crazy. I think its exciting to see a guy that big move that fast and then superman into bases.

Side note: I met Prince when he was like 8 years old with his pops at a party after an A’s vs Tigers game and he was already like a 40% to scale model of his father. Nothing he can do about his genes, don’t really see why the press would feel the need to attack him about it. Dicks

by m34josh on Sep 6, 2009 9:49 PM PDT up reply actions

love him

I think Prince becomes a FA in 2011 and the Giants should try to land him if the Brewers can’t get him to sign a long term contract. He’s a big boy, but athletic. The celebration was kind of bush league, but why blame him … the entire Brewer’s team was in on it.

I was thinking more of the poor bunting technique displayed by position players. I don’t think the lack of fundamental bunting technique would show up significantly in that PrdOut stat as that situation late in a game is relatively rare.
Poor bunting is something I’ve seen a few times this year by position players, but yes, the simple inability to hit the ball is the overshadowing weakness of this team.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Sep 6, 2009 4:32 PM PDT up reply actions

FWIW, the Giants have a slightly below average # of SH for the whole season. But that could also be due to the fact that they, you know, have a team OBP near .300.

no, grant’s analysis wasn’t complete. if you define a productive out as moving a runner along, many times you still need a hit to get that runner in to score.

the giants lead baseball in making outs. period. lowest OBP = highest % of making outs.

so:
a) we’re great at making outs. (below average hitting; worst at drawing walks)
b) we don’t try to bunt in the 1 situation it’s necessary for this team (man on 2nd no outs)
c) today we tried to bunt, but couldn’t execute.

Not if you looked closely

Garko’s a guy who hits LHP real well, but has always been below average against RHP.
Martinez’s not as good against LHP as Garko but a proven track record as above average against both, and better against RHP. He had hit worse each month this year after an injured and terrible 2008, so questions existed on whether he still had it, but he was a proven hitter.

He was just more expensive in salary and would’ve cost more in prospects. And would’ve left Ishikawa without a role except as a pinch hitter (unless … oh, say Bengie got hurt and V-Mart had to play catcher?)

And could’ve played catcher next year while waiting to see if Posey was ready.

by 18 Mile on Sep 7, 2009 1:50 AM PDT up reply actions

But Garko’s not really below-average against RHP, he’s more like average to above average. He was above average this year before the trade.

Obviously I would give the tie to Martinez – longer track record of success, etc but there really wasn’t much of a difference at the time of the trade. Now, Martinez has hit very well since and Garko not so much, but that doesn’t make their statistics as Indians this season more different than they actually were.

The first one, yes, the second one, kind of. .500 baseball on the road is great for us at this point; it may not be enough to make the postseason, but it’s a hell of a lot better than we have been doing. We really should have swept this series except for the LOLFENSE (although we didn’t deserve to win today, we were living dangerously and finally got burned). If we can keep it up at home and play .500 on the road we could win.

Except, of course, the Rockies never lose.

This was one of the worst managed ball games i've seen

1-Merkin Valdez throws 1 pitch. He was luckily able to get it past Braun. He wasn’t able to get it past Fielder.

2-Merkin Valdez is not a multi inning reliever. Why have him face murderers row when Affeldt wasn’t used?

I wouldn’t have wanted a fresh Valdez to face Braun/Fielder/McGehee let alone after Valdez already threw an inning. This loss is on Bochy IMO

It was supposed to be a knock out pitch, but it was also blamed for the injury problems.

As far as I can tell he has two choices. Start throwing the split again and hope his harm holds up long enough for him to earn a few million dollars.

Or stick with what he has and be that anomoly that blows despite almost decent control of a 100 mph fastball only to be out of the league in a year.

On the assumption there was no way to sweep in Milwaukee. Looking back at the box score, though, I’m curious how close we are to records for achievement (wins would be the metric I guess) with minimal offense. Anyone know?

I mentioned in the thread that the Dodgers won 85 games in 2003 with a 79 team OPS+.

If someone has Play-Index, they might be able to find in more depth. Someone mentioned looking at the Dodgers teams of the 60s, but Dodger Stadium had such a crazy park factor that I bet their OPS+ wouldn’t be too bad.

I say it's okay to show up teams

Especially the ones that deserve it. The Giants might get all worked up into a frenzy, but I don’t feel sorry for these pros unable to execute baseball plays. Too, if their undies are all bunched up because of it, go and do something about it. The Giants have thus far demonstrated they’re good at giving it up, but can they take it back?

From watching them and following the team

I can’t imagine them doing anything to “show up” the Giants. If anything, they’d probably want to tell them where to go eat or golf or hang out in town with their families or invite them along.

And hey, the Giants won the series and throttled their offense for 3 games. If anyone was shown up it was the home team.

It’s amazing. Like, when the Cavaliers did their little bowling thin during the pre-game ritual, it was funny. But they had time to prepare, they all knew it was coming and it was just all planned out. But with this one, they had to practice it not knowing if they’d ever get a chance to use it, and then suddenly they get that opportunity, only they don’t have time to get prepared, and they especially don’t have time to think about it since their minds are racing from winning a ballgame, and yet every player was on cue and ready to go.

I’m going to bed.

I’m not too big a fan of choreographed celebratory nonsense in any sport. That probably puts me in the minority of humanity… and I turned off the TV as soon as I saw the ball go over the fence, so I didn’t see that little gem until just now. It was well executed and reasonably original, I have to give ’em that, despite the amateurishness and lack of class that sort of thing indicates to me.
But doing your little schtick in response to just barely managing to avoid being swept at home strikes me as a bit jerkoffy.

Utter frustration and futility.

Welcome to the Minority of Humanity

I am not particularly a fan of pointing to the sky after every bloop single, or Wilson’s little closing ritual (how about honoring your father by striking out the side?). And I am definitely not a fan of football players that dance like members of the Tongan rugby team every time they knock down a pass or make a tackle.

But I’m definitely in the majority with: if you don’t like it, play better. Nobody knows what the Detroit Loins do when they win a football game anymore.

Especially since we don’t know what goes on in the other team’s clubhouse.
My thought upon seeing the celebration was that awhile ago a similar situation occurred – walk off home run, big dude gets mobbed by teammates at the plate subsequently knocking someone over blah blah blah … and a media guy said something like “He almost took the whole team out like bowling pins.” The players hear about it and decide the next time a big guy hits a walkoff they’ll be silly. Who knows.

CF Velez/Torres

- I don’t care about Velez’s learning curve in center.

No one in berkeley is punching anyone. They’d stick a flower in their pint glass or something.

What’s a good bar in berkeley? I just moved here.

The first time I went out, I ended up in Lake Meritt, not really an experience I care to repeat.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

Well, technically we were in Emeryville I think. It was called Kitty’s. I wouldn’t really recommend it. It was meh, just ok. I don’t really know any Berkeley places, but can ask around for you.

eh, just trying to get you rattled. He obviously knows enough about baseball to know that the Giants are chasing the Rox, but not enough jump on some ridiculous “Roxtober” bandwagon. That gets no respect in my book… BTW, I will be selling copies of my book at the Local Borders in the city of Orange next weekend…

Oh hey, I think I heard that the Giants game today is also an ESPN radio game – for those out of the KNBR area. Double header baseball on ESPN Giants and then I fergit who.
