Baggs on Posey

I brought this up in the GDT 1.

Reposted without permission, but with respect:

First off, I’m not sure I understand all the whining about starting Buster Posey’s arbitration clock. Are you people serious?

For one, that’s three years from now. For another, if he were to make the opening day roster next season, it wouldn’t matter anyway. It’s not like he’s going to get yo-yoed between Triple-A and the majors after that. Once he’s up for good, folks, he ain’t goin’ back down.

And most importantly, the Giants are in a pennant race. If it’s the Pirates calling up Pedro Alvarez, I’d understand it. But this is a guy who adds depth where the team needs it. I can virtually guarantee you that at some point this month, Bruce Bochy will be able to pinch run for Bengie Molina because of Posey’s presence, and that’ll contribute to a run.

Besides, don’t you think this time in the major leagues will help to speed up Posey’s development? He’ll see what the pace of life is all about here, he’ll watch pressure-packed games, he’ll talk through situations with teammates and coaches. And he’ll have clear goals in mind when he goes to the Arizona Fall League.

Calling up Posey should’ve been a no-brainer, with or without Bengie Molina’s injury. And it’s perfectly fine to bring him up in a bench role.

None of this makes any sense. We have two catchers, as well as two other guys that could easily catch in a pinch. So why is he up just to sit on the bench and never play?

Uh, going back and forth between Fresno and the majors has absolutely nothing to do with the acceleration of the arb clock…. I’m not sure why he brought that up. That would be a complaint about options, which no one has made on here.

Yeah but Arb Clock is a different animal than the options stuff… the arb clock complaint has to do with him accumulating major league service time when he’s not getting PT. Options would be a concern if he wasn’t expected to pretty much stick in the majors once he makes it up.
