Post-Game Recap: Giants Win Behind Cain, Wilson

Caption contest.

by Morry Gash - AP

Caption contest.

And, uh, maybe Velez. But I'm pretty sure Lewis would have fielded that ground ball to end the eighth too.

Remember this game? Well, that's just the post-game recap; the real meat is in the GameThread after Wilson coughed up the save. Apparently, that game ended the season.

So raise a glass to Brian Wilson, probably the most underrated part of the contending season to this point. He's been pretty danged fantastic down the stretch.

And that Cain guy's pretty good too.

Great win. I won't even complain about not seeing Buster Posey again.

And again, you’re pretending like players don’t develop. One of your flaws.

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 4:57 PM PDT up reply actions   1 recs

Every time a 27-year-old with little history of professional baseball success has a stretch of 100 to 200 at-bats of success, I’m going to assume it’s a fluke. About 80 to 90% of the time, I’ll be right. You can pretend that you can see the difference between a player who has figured it out and a player who is enjoying an unsustainable hot streak.

Seriously, I have nothing against Velez. It’s just a bad idea to suddenly think any 27-year-old has just figured it out.

by Grant on Sep 5, 2009 5:19 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Excuse me

But where is your evidence that Velez has developed? What evidence is there really, other than “he’s really squaring the ball up better now”, which, if he is, I’d like to see some video analysis or something of the sort as evidence?

If you’re going to use the arbitrary sample size of “since his callup” then of course you’re going to get slammed for using a “small sample size”.

There’s a segment here that talks about the strides Eugenio has made since his callup. Did you know that Velez had never hit off a tee until very recently? He’ls only started doing this, which has helped his concentration. He is now hitting line drives instead of lazy fly balls, and is in fact “squaring the ball up better.”

Don’t you think a player that has never hit off a tee before has room to develop?

You’re excused.

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 8:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Can you provide me some batted ball info or hit f/x data or something

That shows that he is indeed squaring the ball up better (more line drives, balls coming harder and faster off the bat) ? I’ll concede the point for now if you do.

18% LD is up 3% from last season but nothing particularly impressive overall.

Honestly, his peripheral hitting stats look about the same as last year – his HR/FB is up, but so is SO%. His BB% is down, his XBH% is the same… I would guess that he’s probably about a .275/.310/.410 hitter overall if he were given a significant number of ABs.

well when is that starting from

are you comparing last seasons to this season. i don’t think it’s fair to count anything before his callup in July, because that’s when I’m arguing he started turning things around. When he got sent down he hit better than he’s ever hit in triple A and has been hot ever since.

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 9:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

His numbers in AAA were worse than last season, actually, and were only equivalent to a 259/.294/.373 major league performance.

where are you getting this?

I read that in the weeks before he got called up he played better than he ever has in AAA

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 9:03 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Overall

in AAA this year he hit .297/.340/.451, which is pretty poor for a player in his third year in AAA and 27 years old. As I said, the MLE for that is only .259/.294/.373

Looking at his splits (as deep as they go), he hit

.200/.231/.240 in May
.276/.358/.483 in June (.233/.299/.383 MLE)
.333/.356/.485 in July (.290/.308/.400 MLE)

oh right!

it doesn’t look good because you don’t care about batting average. Batting average is better than OBP with runners in scoring position in my opinion. Also, how are MLE’s derived? They sound pretty arbirtrary to me, and I doubt they apply to every player. See: Linden. Todd

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 9:10 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

oh right!

you’re going to discount the reality of his stats because you’re invested in proving him to be a much better player than he actually is! there’s no way an .841 OPS in the PCL could possibly translate to a much worse OPS in the major leagues!

his month of july, that's what it was

http://bleacherreport.com/articles/233633-eugenio-velez-keeps-hitting-say-hello-to-san-franciscos-newest-weapon

During his time in Fresno, something clicked. Whether it was consistent playing time for the first time in a long time, some better coaching, less pressure to succeed, we may never really know. His month of July was probably the best of his minor league career. His last 10 games before he was recalled, he recorded five multi-hit games, hitting .333 over the same span.

by tjbrun88 on Sep 5, 2009 9:17 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Minor League Splits has them for the minors, but it can be a bit sketch (see the discussion of San Jose defensive stats earlier where it was pointed out that the SJ scorekeeper called like every fly ball to the OF a LD).

Baseball-Reference and Fangraphs have them for the majors. I think their numbers sometimes differ a bit.

Anyway, Velez had a 24.7 LD% in the minors per MLS, which is solid but not great for a guy with little power or patience.

Just returned from…

…reading the “Trade Rowand” thread (Not what you THOUGHT I’d say Willie…that Giant BOY is great! sorry , but I’m a non p/c nostalgic purist) , huh?

Shades of relevancy color all our perceptions. Humor , redundancy , unreality of trades. Hijacking a thread isn’t mean compared to calling someone’s creation “stupid”…that’s just fucked.

It may be stupid in your eyes , but do you think its author thought so? Have some consideration. We’re not all top – notch baseball analysts.

babip during last 28 days

Which is a statistic often cited around these parts… .268. So in this 28 day sample size, he’s been unlucky. Citing a 14 day sample size, or 7 day sample size, or 365 day sample size from the same reference paints Velez as having one of the top-5 OPS lines on the team… that paints a very different picture. I’m not defending Velez, necessarily, but to cherry-pick 28 days as an argument doesn’t necessarily hold water. Just saying. I’d rather have him at the plate than Winn.

I have to say, I’ve been pretty disappointed in Buster Posey’s play thus far. Sure he hit the ball hard in the minors, but it doesn’t mean a thing until you do it in The Show, and I haven’t been impressed at all by what I’ve seen from him. I can barely remember a single one of his at-bats, and that’s never a good sign.

When do we get real and admit that Buster Posey might not be it?

Prediction

We are statistically on pace for 89-90 wins this year, a pace that we have been at for quite some time, roughly speaking. Given that our remaining games are ca. 2/3 at home, I think a plausible prediction would be 91 wins, which—again given our three games vs the Rockies at home, and the shakiness of the dgrs—should be enough for our making the Wild Card, whether or not Buster Posey comes to bat.

Ok I went to see the movie Extract today. TIVO’d the Giants game. I have some MCC questions.

1. How much did everyone freak out when they called Pablo, “King Fu Panda?”
2. Did people appreciate hearing Dick Stockton and Eric Karros bag on the Giants hitting approach to a national audience?
3. How much do we love see great defense and pitching protect Cain’s lead?

I think it’s important to point out the glaring weaknesses to the fans who might not know better. Just because you realize the Giants have a pathetic approach at the plate doesn’t mean every Giants fan watching the game does. Obviously the average fan knows the Giants don’t score and don’t hit well, but they may not know why. That is part of their job as broadcasters. It gets frustrating when K n K refuse to address the issue and consistently give the credit to a pitcher with an ERA approaching five.

No one here gets out alive.

by Bond16 on Sep 5, 2009 7:26 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

this is a great point. Remember that the the game probably has a broader audience than just Giants fans. I didn’t mind Karros and Stockton making those points – they didn’t say anything about the Giants offensive ineptitude that hasn’t been said at MCC ad naseum.

I think they tried to. They talked about hitting coaches and trying to change the players approach at the plate. They also talked about how if a pitcher walks 2 guys in a row its not smart to swing at the first two pitches. Also other stuff I can’t remember. I believe it was an extended insightful analysis you don’t usually hear from a broadcast team.

Also, if they didn’t hold the lead to preserve Cain’s 13th win, I was going to light a kitten on fire.

I’m just going to come out and say it: Brian Wilson is awesome. He’s repeatedly come in to get more than three outs at the end of the game. Hell, he’s gotten seven or eight outs a few times.

I’m not one of those guys who wants to spend a lot of resources in the bullpen, but I think Wilson and company are a big factor in the team’s success this year.

It’s like they got all awesome and stuff without me noticing.

by Dan from NM on Sep 5, 2009 6:18 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The bullpen has been HUGE for us this year. This goes hand in hand with how good our starters have been going deep into games which in turn keeps the pen rested.

Our starters have thrown the 2nd most innings in the NL which in turn means our bullpen has thrown the 2nd fewest innings in the NL.

Oh Wow
When the Diamondbacks sent starter Jon Garland to the Dodgers late last month, they expected to receive infielder Tony Abreu in return. In addition to his gaudy minor league stats, Abreu appealed to Arizona because he still had two more pre-arbitration years ahead of him and five years total before he became a free agent.

However, as Nick Piecoro of The Arizona Republic reports, the team had no way of knowing that Abreu and the Dodgers were close to reaching an agreement to settle a grievance filed in 2007. As a result of the settlement, Abreu will be awarded additional service time that will make him arbitration eligible in 2011 instead of 2012. The D-Backs believe LA did not act in good faith during negotiations.

The grievance came after Abreu was optioned to the minors in July 2007, and he claimed he should have instead been placed on the disabled list with an abdominal injury. As you know from our service time primer, a player can accrue service time while on the DL but not while in the minors. Abreu would pick up 47 additional days of service time thanks to the grievance, which would likely make him a “Super Two.”

As Piecoro explains, it’s unclear what action the D-Backs will take at this point, but teams can file grievances with MLB over disputed trades. They could ask to amend the original list of players the two teams agreed upon to complete the deal, or they could ask for the Dodgers to kick in some cash to cover Abreu’s increased salary.

No wonder why they always say abdominal injuries will linger if they aren’t taken care of properly.

Yeah

State actually played well in the first quarter, with good D and got on the board first. Then they decided to not make tackles, drop passes, and generally fuck up. It was an abomination.

The good news, everyone I saw there and back here tonight when we arrived home said the only good thing about the game was the marching band. We were pretty damn awesome.

It wasn't all bad

The game was horrible, but the weekend was a blast. I met Dick Tomey in the hotel coffee shop and chatted about the team with him Saturday morning. We found the awesomeness that is Famima!! (two exclamation points) Bar hopping and party hopping at the hotel Saturday night after the game was fun, except that I lost my roommate when I had too much to drink and didn’t see her again until 630 Sunday morning. I tooled around Downtown Disney Sunday and did some shopping, saw Ponyo (so cute, and very fun), and caught most of the Giants game at the ESPN Zone. And I managed to get one of my new band friends together with a very cute guy who’s good for her, so I call it a weekend well spent.

The Giants are in a playoff race, the Brewers suck so bad that their pitchers can’t even hit someone on purpose. So now was not the time for giving them a free baserunner or risk a suspension. If the Giants were up by a couple touchdowns, then I would’ve liked to see some Joaquin or someone brush back Gallardo. Just inside enough to make him think “Oh crap, this is gonna hurt.” Three pitches at your ace’s face is not cool

September Callups? completely pointless according to Bochy

Brand new adoptive daddy for the Big Unit. Congrats go out to my son for his 300th win. Only 211 more wins until he catches Cy Young!

I still remember 2 years ago

The lineup for the game on September 1st included Ray Durham (during his worst year ever), Rich Aurilia and some other crappy veterans over the young guys.

"Catcher are base running. Hitters are offense."
Only [hella] games left until the end of Zito's [no, make that Rowand's] contract.

I hated that season. I proved to me Hiead would not play a younger guy based on merit or any other reason short of All Star out of the gate or he had no other choice.

this is what pisses me off. If you would get Lewis, Bowker and Buster into 1 game a week it would help their development. but he won’t even do that. he won’t even use bowker, buster or guzman as pinch hitters!

yeah, if we’re not trying out any of the young players, at least we’re contending

Also

Looking over some of my past fanposts, I came across my prediction thread (from last year).

Some highlights:

-Sandoval becomes a regular next year and wins rookie of the year (my bold pick)</blockquote

So close!

-Molina ends up falling off a cliff, production-wise, and gets a bad attitude to boot, putting him squarely in Sabean’s dog-house. This leads to a dump-him move ala Livan, Benitez, Morris, Pierzynski, etc.

So close!

-Giants get the 3rd pick in the draft next year.

So close!

-Matt Cain wins more than 10 games next year.

Booyah!

Correia finishes the year making gradual strides and then has a good year next year.

LOL thehavenot

Henry Sosa has a healthy season next year.
