Post-Game Thread: Bad Zito, Good Game
Up in Ashland for the weekend, so I didn't see the score. I'll just guess that the Giants pitchers gave up ten walks while holding the Brewers to two runs.

He was only bad in the sense that he couldn’t adjust quickly enough to the erratic zone to avoid giving up 2 runs or minimize his pitch count. Which is another way of saying “he battled”, but that’s too optimistic and gamer-y a term.

signing him made no sense for the Rockies, and no sense for Giambi. His best position is DH, and they already have an HOF left handed first baseman in Todd Helton, so when is he going to get a chance to play and impress some team for next season? Yet somehow it’s working out for them.

I made a vow never to watch anything ESPN on that fateful day, at least until they realize that a West coast exists and that there is actually a NL.

nobody’s said more bad things lately about Bengie than me, but let’s give some credit where it’s due. That’s his third game winning HR in about the last three weeks. (tenth inning against the Mets, three run pinch hit HR against the Dbacks, and last night’s against the Brewers) And that’s despite the fact that he missed a week or so with that injury. I don’t want him back next year, but when all is said and done, my memories of him will be mostly good ones. My hatred of him in the cleanup spot is the fault of Bruce Bochy, not Bengie Molina.

The real problem with this line of thinking is that it ignores the fact that every other time he’s stepped to the plate, he’s not been very good. If he consistently got on base a little bit more, the Giants would score more runs, and the team wouldn’t be in a position where it needed its “cleanup hitter” to hit a game-winning home run every night. Even the home run last night was on a first pitch hack.
By being so averse to walking, he’s created a mess. Someone who makes a giant mess doesn’t get a ton of credit from me by simply cleaning it up; that merely makes me not pissed at them. I think to make most of us happy, he’d have to actually get that OBP above .300 first, and would thus have avoided making a mess in the first place.

Just before batting practice Friday afternoon, Bengie Molina strolled past Buster Posey in the dugout, and with a smile on his face, told the hotshot prospect, “Will you stop trying to light a fire under me?” Then Molina sparked the Giants to a pennant-fueled victory. The Giants’ cleanup-hitting catcher slugged a tiebreaking home run in the eighth inning off Milwaukee Brewers right-hander Todd Coffey as the Giants won 3-2 at Miller Park.

Completely for the record, but say a player slugs 80 HR’s in a season but does literally nothing else. No walks, no singles, no doubles, etc. That player would have a wOBA of 0.260. That’s amazingly crappy.
That’s Bengie Molina in his ideal state. And there’s no way he’s slugging that many dingerz.

The Giants are only outperforming their pythagorean by a couple games. The most egregious example of outperforming your pythag from recent years that I can remember is the 2007 Diamondbacks, who outperformed theirs by a whopping 11 games. (They won the division but actually were a below-.500 type team that year.)

Anyone read Brucey's great work in the Chron this morning?
Apparently Buster not only has played all positions on the diamond, he can play all of them … and well! And there’s no spot for him even with that in mind because you can’t bench Eugenio Velez. We’re talking about the worst non-Petco offense in baseball and yet, even with the asinine assumption that Buster can play every position on the diamond well, none of the players in the lineup are actually bad enough for him to unseat them. Then why can’t we score any runs, you guys???
Then he said that we should re-sign Molina to a 1-2 year deal “because we just can’t let him go, he’s been too valuable!” and play Buster at 1B or LF for the next 1-2 years.
Why do I even read the paper?

Molina made 3 bad throws to 2nd that sailed high and wide, which are not typical for him. This can happen if a player doesn’t follow through, like when a pitcher leaves pitches up out of the zone. I suspect the reason is his quad is still bothering him such that he can’t step forward and put much weight on it, resulting in an all arm throw.
Did he make any better throws to second later on that I forgot about?
