Indians fire Eric Wedge

The Indians fired manager Eric Wedge today. I visited Let's Go Tribe to try to get a sense for what they thought of the firing, and discovered a shocking fact: although he's been the manager for seven years, LGT has not one single Wedge Antilles joke. Some nerds they are.

I had a vaguely positive impression of Wedge, although since I don't follow the AL much it's heavy on the "vaguely". A few years ago he was considered a good developer of young talent, though ithat reputation has tarnished some as the Indians young talent has fizzled. More recently he's been knocked for playing favorites (shades of Bochy). He's also the guy who experimented with Garko in the outfield (which should make owlcroft happy). The firing seems to be more of a by-the-book "team is losing -> fire the manager" move rather than a specific indictment of Wedge.

OMG SABZE GET OF UR HANZ AN GET HIM

I don’t really have a concrete opinion on Wedge since I haven’t watched many Indians games over the years. It doesn’t seem like he’s had much with which to work over the past few years though. So, I guess my answer is *shrug *.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Imagine Bochy with poorer pitcher-handling and less veteran love.

Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...

From what I’ve heard, he’s still pretty damn fond of veterans.

Most managers prefer veterans. Wedge just isn’t as bad as Bochy, IMO.

Maybe Wedge might defer the pitcherhandling to Righetti?

Ya know...ignorance really IS bliss.
Well - I do , anyway.

Why can’t we fire Bochy now too?

Insanity is just a state of mind.

I had the pleasure of spending the last 3 years in Cleveland.

The answer is an emphatic NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!!!!

Never thought I'd see the day

when pleasure and Cleveland appeared in the same sentence.

Do you miss the West Side Market?

"The part of the roster where most of the money is spent, though, is on free agents and guys acquired through trade — guys Sabean did play a big role in acquiring. And they are not good. When you get 2/5 of a pitching rotation for free, you would think you could do better with $76 million than to field the league’s worst offense."

Closer.

No thanks.

the guy who refused to play Matt LaPorta even though the team was out of it? No Thanks.

You've gotta admit, though...

…he offers far greater pun potential than Bochy. Even leaving aside the Star Wars references (don’t worry, we won’t leave them aside for long) we could have variations on “driving a wedge” or Fred Lewis being “permanently wedged into the dugout”. Random lineup decisions? He consulted the Wedgee board.

I’d take pretty much anyone over bochy right now but there are definitely better options than wedge. Like myself, for example.

My left nut also is very qualified for the job, and would love the chance to manage. I know its not as big as Boch’y head but it can be more diverse.

Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

lol… I just imagined Renel’s voice echoing through the stadium as she announces the lineups before the game:

“…and managing for YOUR… SAN FRANCISCO GIANTS… TexasRanger’s LEFT NUT!!!!”
Of course, the photo that appears on the scoreboard is equally brilliant, but not nearly as much as the interview your left nut gives on KNBR with the Razor and Mr. T.

(oh yeah, and Barbieri believes everything your left nut says)

I think Bruce Jenkins would be equally in love with the gm, ol’ righty

Awesome.

That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

Good God no. He employed one of the worst hitting coaches in the league during his time there. Derek Shelton is the Indians version of Shawon Dunston. Two of my friends that are Indians fans have been calling for his firing for the past 2 1/2 years and it never came.

Those are in turn Star Wars references anyway.

Everything in the end is a Star Wars reference.

No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
