Post-Game Thread: The Giants Are the Worst Hitting Team of All-Time

Maybe the Giants will still make the playoffs. Heck, they're just a game back of a playoff spot. But if they don't, the epitaph will be simple. A single sentence on a tombstone that tells a story.

Here lies the 2009 Giants, who held the Phillies to three runs in a three-game road series and lost the series.

Don't buy the flowers yet. But it wouldn't hurt you to get your black suit dry-cleaned.

Being 1 game out. But I don’t have to like this at all.

When should we fire Bochy? Today? Tomorrow? Next week? After the season? After the playoffs? Between the playoffs?

Lewis at home, Winn away; neither against LHP

This is easy.
Against LHP: Lewis, Velez and Winn (unless he says the reason he’s had a terrifically putrid ’09 is cause he discovered he was near-sighted in his right eye and he got contacts) all sit. Start Rowand, Nate and Torres.

Against RHP: while Velez is still hitting well – Velez and Rowand daily, Lewis at home and Winn on the road. Yeah, we know Winn has been terrible and Lewis has been hot, but over the entire season, Winn’s been terrible at home and much much better away, while Lewis has been the opposite. Winn can get home starts when giving Rowand a rest.

FWIW

When he put Fred in for Ishi, I brucetionalized the decision by thinking OK, well Lidge just missed the strike zone 3 times in a row by several feet against Uribe, and Lidge is prone to total lapses in control. No one on this team can take a goddamn pitch except Fred (who takes called strike after called strike), so let’s put him in there.

Pitch 1: Called Strike
Pitch 2: Called Strike

And we’re fucked…

bingo

that’s the only reason i could think of too.
cause it’s true:
>>if you have to now pinch hit for Ishi with righties on the mound, why is he playing?

by 18 Mile on Sep 4, 2009 1:10 AM PDT up reply actions

When I saw Fred about to come out, my immediate reaction was “Ah crap, here comes KFred. 1 in 4 four chance he strikes out.” After looking at who was left on the bench though, there unfortunately wasn’t much left. Sure, he could have let TI take that at bat because he has twice as many RBIs as Fred, but the odds of him getting on base weren’t all that great. Everyone else with big league success against right handers was in the starting lineup. Just one of the many problems with a team with no offense

As much as I hate to say it, but that was one of those moments where I realized why the Bums went out and got Jim Thome. Do they need him? Nope. Would it have been nice to have him tonight? Yep

by DrStankus on Sep 3, 2009 10:51 PM PDT up reply actions

I like Posey alot, but I don’t think you can really say he is the best overall hitter to use there. 0 at bats facing a big league closer (even if he does suck), 0 at bats in a big league ballpark, 0 at bats in a wild card race, and a grand total of 131 at bats above A ball. Was Fred the wrong choice there? Yes. Was Buster the wrong choice too? Absolutely

I don’t understand the point of leaving some mediocrities on the bench while playing others. Why not run each of them out there equally in case one happens to be more than mediocre? It’s not like Rowand or Winn is going to pay part of their salary back if they get to play every game.

You guys clearly don’t understand what’s going on. If Bochy mismanages his young players and intentionally puts them in roles where they’re more likely to fail, he can point at that failure as the reason why he doesn’t play the young guys. It’s a diabolical scheme of pure evil, but it’s apparently pretty effective.

They held the Phillies to three runs, not four, and were 0 for 8 with RISP this game.

But all will be well! Molina’s back and going 0-4 with no plate discipline or speed! Good thing we didn’t waste a draft pick on a highly talented young catcher, because he would obviously be inferior for being young and not old.

And again, this was one of those must-win-but-really-don’t-have-to-boy-it’d-sure-be-nice-to-gain-a-game games. The Giants outscored the Phillies 5-3 and lost two out of three. Sounds a bit like that AZ series a few days ago…

2) As good as Fred Lewis may or may not be, I do not trust him with the game on the line. Of all moves to make, why put him in at the most important AB of the game?

he’s pretty bad hitter though. Garko is averagish but well below average for a first basemen and can’t play defense. So this is what we’re stuck with next year. The Giants got Garko with the intent of using him in the future, so if they stick with that plan, we continue to feature some of the worst first base production in the league.

Really, we would be better off just moving Pablo to 1st next year and just try to acquire a third basemen through FA/trade

I'm stunned...

…how on Earth does Dumb-Ass not have Rent Money bunt? The great hitting against Colorado was an anomally…Of course Rent Money is going to regress toward his mean…we have a hard time scoring runs as it is! I’d much rather have him bunt and have a runner on third with one out and Panda at the plate…Not to mention, the entire strategy of the inning would have changed from the Philly’s perspective…I’m so fucking angry about this loss….

Truth…And that saddens me. Wasn’t bochy watching Chase Utley gave up the chance to swing out of his fucking shoes in game one, and instead ground out to second to move the runner over? You know why he probably did that? Because he doesn’t get asked to bunt….EVER. But he still managed to move the runner over that scored the winning run. Uribe failed at it because he cant bunt and swung out of his shoes for a pop up. Renteria failed because he cant bunt and swung out of his shoes for a pop up. Coincedence? How bout the Giants start making everyone bunt during BP every day? If they can’t do it, send up a pitcher to do it. That runner HAS to move over, because the odds aren’t very good that the Giants offense is going to blow anyone out

I really don't like Bruce Bochy and his managerial "competence"

I only had gametracker but this was still the most frustrating game of the year. I can’t tell exactly how bad those pitches to Molina in the 9th were, but it sure looked like they were all in roughly the same area, low and away, outside the zone. He fouls off one an lays off three. Then the fifth pitch is in exactly the same place, he swings and pops out. I wouldn’t want to offend any lurking Rockies fans so let me just say I reacted very poorly to that without going into precise details.

There is a basic flaw here

This team management has no frigging clue how to build an offense. They have crap to deal with, but they make that even worse by sitting the player with the 2nd highest OBP, rewarding the player with one of the lowest OBP’s in baseball, and promoting the guy who can’t do anything.

Other team scores 1. Other team sweeps the series. When the Giants protest that this is not mathematically possible, Selig will say, “hey, maybe you’ll win the Nobel Prize for mathematics, then — SINCE YOU’RE NOT GOING TO THE PLAYOFFS!”

The Giants will stammer and make some sort of lame retort like, “Well, your momma!” Then Segill will just chuckle condescendingly and walk away.

Using 3.5 runs as a benchmark: If we could call a pitcher giving up 4 or more a Win, and 3 or less a Loss, Lincy would be 22-7, instead of 13-5. Cain, 20-7, not 11-4, Zito 19-8, not 9-11 and Sanchez 16-9, not 6-11.

77-31, not 39-31.

Is it fair to say our Offense has cost our starters 38 wins?

It’s cost a few, but not nearly as many as we think. If you dig the Pythagoras thing, then the Giants are a couple of games better than they “should be.” A better offense would add a few games beyond that. Enough to put us in the wild card lead, but not enough to catch the Dodgers, who have a superior offense.

Once in 1979 , once in 1980.

The ‘79 show was great because the band wasn’t fucked up.
The ’80 show , well…

I wrote them a fan letter when I was 19 , dumber and really naive…only band that I did that with.

What did I get in return?

Why , a merchandising order form , of course. Where I could order VH shirts , hats , vacuum cleaner bags (As a gag gift I once gave a U2 loving friend an unofficial U2 vacuum cleaner bag “For THE EDGE in home cleaning”)

I liked Sammy Hagar. I liked him when he fronted Montrose , I liked him when he went solo (All Night Long is a great live album)…but he’s no David Lee Roth.

I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

by GiantPain on Sep 3, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m comfortable with the “thrown-in” position of my towel. Ever since Spills borghed the Giants, I just decided that this team couldn’t win the games it “needed” to win and that for all intents and purposes, this nice season was “over.”

Many wild card teams make it in with sub-.500 road records, but that’s usually sub in the 39-42 sense and not the 10+ games under .500 pace the Giants have going for them.

I’m already on to thinking about how badly the Giants will construct their offense next season. It’s not just that the current offense isn’t performing, it’s that the hitters actually lack modern-day hitting approaches. I think the rest of the league represents the newer fashion of baseball players. The Giants are stuck in the 80s/early 90s.

Strike that last paragraph. I stopped playing after little league, therefore, I cannot properly comment on how to play baseball.

The problem

is that there are not a lot of really good hitting free agents available this year. Their hands are tied unless they trade fore someone, which will inevitably mean giving up one (or two) of the top prospects. It really might be necessary though as this pitching staff is WAY too fucking good to be going to waste like this.

Sorry for any grammatical errors but this offense has led me to two hours of drinking Le Courvoisier straight out of the bottle.

by Hoist That Rag on Sep 3, 2009 10:59 PM PDT up reply actions

Looking at the free agent list, you could argue that the Giants could improve at every offensive position by signing the guys on that list. The problem is, where do you spend the money? And which of the current scrubs do you bid farewell? I think they need an outfielder and/or first baseman real bad, and hopefully they can afford them.
