minor lines, 9/2/09
Not too many highlights from the farm system today: (a) Garrett Broshuis led a shutout effort with six scoreless innings on six hits and a walk in a CT 1-0 win; (b) David Maroul, up in Fresno to fill in the roster, hit a grand slam in a Fresno win; (c) Darren Ford...how about his second half? 3-for-6 today with a double and triple; (d) C.J. Ziegler went 4-for-5 with two doubles; (e) Johnny Monell had a two home run day for Augusta.
Fresno Grizzlies (Triple-A): Fresno 10, Las Vegas 6
LF Ben Copeland - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (17), 1 HR (6), 1 RBI, 1 SO, 1 HBP, .280
C Steve Holm - 2-5, 2 R, 1 HR (6), 2 RBI, .250
3B David Maroul - 1-4, 1 R, 1 HR (1), 4 RBI, 2 SO, .143
CF Clay Timpner - 2-5, 3 R, 1 3B (4), 1 RBI, .246
SP Steve Hammond - 6.0 IP, 7 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 3 BB, 6 SO, 3 HR, 5.39 ERA, W (11-11)
RP Osiris Matos - 1.0 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 1 SO, 3.48 ERA
Game Notes: Fresno won on the back of a big inning, and a grand one. Fresno had taken a 2-1 lead after three when Timpner and Holm led off the fourth with a pair of singles, and Jake Wald walked to load the bases. Maroul came up next, and with nobody out, hit a grand slam to put the Giants up 6-1. Copeland added one of his own later that inning. Things continued in the fifth as Borchard led off with a single, Timpner tripled him home and Holm hit a two-run home run.
Team Notes: Copeland's home run is his second since the start of August...Holm has hit four home runs in his last ten games, with just six in sixty games this season in Fresno. Five of those six have come on the road...Maroul made just his second appearance in Fresno helping out a roster ravaged by 40-man promotions. In one swing, he got nearly as many RBI as he had in 21 games in Double-A this season (6)...Timpner is batting 10-for-26 over his last eight games...Ryan Mantle got his first game above Short-A, filling in for the team. He went 1-for-4 with a strikeout...Hammond has gone 4-2 since the start of August...Matos, left behind in the major league callups, did not do much to help himself get back. In his last ten outings, he has a 4.91 ERA.
Connecticut Defenders (Double-A): Connecticut 1, New Hampshire 0
SS Brandon Crawford - 2-4, 1 R, 2 SO, .258
C Jackson Williams - 1-2, 1 2B (20), 1 RBI, 1 BB, .225
1B Brett Pill - 2-3, 1 2B (36), 1 BB, .293
SP Garrett Broshuis - 6.0 IP, 6 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 5 SO, 4.09 ERA, W (5-4)
RP Shane Kaufman - 2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, 3 SO, 3.38 ERA, H (4)
RP Matt Yourkin - 0.2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 0 SO, 2.45 ERA, S (8)
Game Notes: The Defenders picked up a win in a good pitcher's duel. Broshuis led the way with his six shutout innings, avoiding trouble with giving up a pair of singles in the second, and a single and a double in the fifth. The lone Defenders rally came in the fourth, as Crawford led off with a single, and then came around on a two-out Williams double. That would be enough.
Team Notes: Crawford has hit 6-for-11 over his last three games, but hasn't drawn a walk in his last ten games...Williams has been hitting .281 over his last ten games played, with a pair of doubles mixed in...Pill had his fourth multi-hit game in his last nine games played...Broshuis had his second strong game in a row, and has gone at least six innings in each of his last three games...Kaufman hasn't allowed a run in seven outings, after allowing four earned in consecutive games in mid-August.
San Jose Giants (A-Advanced): San Jose 9, Inland Empire 4
DH Darren Ford - 3-6, 2 R, 1 2B (17), 1 3B (8), 1 RBI, .304
1B C.J. Zielger - 4-5, 1 R, 2 2B (9), 3 RBI, 1 SO, .255
LF Thomas Neal - 2-4, 1 R, 1 BB, 1 SO, .333
SP Paul Oseguera - 7.0 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 8 SO, 4.00 ERA, W (6-7)
Game Notes: The Giants took the early lead, with Neal drawing a two-out walk, and Kieschnick hitting an RBI double to score him. After the 66er's took a 2-1 lead in the fourth, For'd RBI triple highlighted a 2-run inning to give the Giants a lead, and Ziegler's 2-run double was part of a three run inning as the Giants put the Dodgers' affiliate away.
Team Notes: Ford is batting 526 and slugging .868 over the last ten games. Simply amazing...Ziegler has gone 9-for-18 with three doubles and a home run over his last five games...Neal has four mult-hit games in his last ten...Oseguera picked up his second consecutive starts (16 innings) without allowing a walk.
Augusta GreenJackets (A): Augusta 5, Savannah 4
C Johnny Monell - 2-4, 2 R, 2 HR (8), 3 RBI, 1 SO, .284
1B Josh Mazzola - 2-3, 1 BB, .277
3B Charlie Culberson - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (14), 1 3B (3), 1 SO, .242
SP Mike Loree - 7.0 IP, 8 H, 4 R, 4 ER, 5 SO, 1 HR, 4.67 ERA
RP Ryan Verdugo - 1.1 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 1 SO, 1.55 ERA
Game Notes: Augusta had a ninth inning comeback to keep their playoff hopes alive. Down 4-1 after five, Augusta got some of their work done in the sixth, as Monell hit a two-run home run in the sixth to make it 4-3. In the ninth, it was Monell again, this time leading off the inning with a home run to tie the game. A one-out single by Ehire Adrianza, followed by a two-out walk, set up Francisco Peguero to end the game with an RBI double.
Team Notes: Monell has three of his eight home runs in his last four games...Mazzola has four multi-hit games over his last nine games...Culberson is slugging .295 on the season after his double and triple today...Loree has given up 14 earned runs over his last three starts (14 2/3 innings).
Salem-Keizer Volcanoes (Short Season-A): Salem-Keizer 7, Eugene 5
CF Evan Crawford - 2-4, 2 R, 1 2B (8), 3 RBI, .3138
DH Dan Cook - 2-4, 1 R, 1 2B (11), 3 RBI, 1 BB, 2 SB (7), .297
2B Juan Martinez - 2-4, 1 R, .283
C Aaron Lowenstein - 1-2, 2 R, 1 BB, .154
SP Jorge Bucardo - 5.0 IP, 3 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 2 SO, 2.64 ERA, W (6-3)
RP Brandon Graves - 1.0 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, 3 SO, 3.94 ERA H (4)
Game Notes: The Volcanoes got into a big lead, but almost let it get away from them. Eugene took the lead in the first inning off of an RBI single, but the Volcanoes tied it in the third with an RBI single by Crawford. In the fifth, Crawford doubled home two more runs, coming home on a Cook single to give Salem-Keizer the lead at 4-1. In the seventh, it was Cook's turn to double home two runs. The Volanoes, sitting up 7-1, did give up two runs in each the eighth and ninth before finally pulling it out.
Team Notes: Crawford has hit 12-for-29 over his last six games with three doubles, two triples and a home run...Cook had his third multi-hit game in a row, and fourth in his last five games...Martinez had his third straight multi-hit game in a row...Bucardo had his fourth straight start of allowing one earned run or less...Graves has bounced back from giving up six earned run in one inning last week with two consecutive scoreless outings.

BRETT PILL!!
I feel like this is the first time in months that I’ve seen Brandon Crawford’s name in a minor lines.
Also, I can’t help but read Dan Cook as Dane Cook every single time.

Sadowski and English DFA. Not Bocock? Is BS that afraid to admit a mistake?

Maybe they believe Bocock will develop as a hitter.

Have seen Bocock in a half dozen or so games when SJ has visited Visalia – doesn’t look like a future major league hitter to me. Hard to figure why they don’t let him go – he has a ceiling of Cody Ransom at best. Aurilia should be given the respect to retire at the end of the year as a Giant – he has earned that right, not by his performance this year but because of his earlier service.

the real mistake, I as I see it, wasn’t adding Bocock to the 40-man roster. The real mistake was not having a backup for Omar that had played above A ball (recall that Frandsen was supposed to be the backup and he got hurt, too.) When Omar couldn’t play to start the season, the team had no other options for SS. Bocock, by most accounts, could play major league defense, but couldn’t hit a lick. I doubt that the team really believed Bocock was major league ready. They just didn’t have any other options (in their mind) and made the move as a temporary one.
I’m surprised that English was DFA’d as I think he could still be a useful major leaguer, at least, as a reliever. But the Brass has made it abundantly clear that it not release Aurilia under any circumstances, despite it being painstakingly clear that he is not worthy of a roster spot.

I agree with all that...
…but at some point you have to acknowledge that Bocock has been going in reverse for the last 2 seasons. He’ll be 25 when next season starts, and put up an unimpressive batting line in single-A this year. Even if they do think (as Rich suggests) that he can still develop as a hitter, he’s not helping the Giants any time soon, and losing him to a waiver claim seems like a pretty minor concern.

He was a good hitter in college and really hasn’t figured it out much at the professional level though I understand he’s been hitting the ball pretty hard this year without much to show for it. Maybe that is enough, with his defense, that the Giants think he’s worth hanging on to and waiting to see what happens.

.355 as a sophomore and .324 as a junior might argue otherwise. No power to speak of but still, not a dud either.

- AVG alone isn’t a good stat
- His numbers were terrible for a college player
- He was an elite defensive SS with no signability issues, and yet lasted until the 9th round. 266th pick overall. What does that tell you about how scouts saw his bat?

I think calling his numbers terrible a bit of an overstatement, please explain.
I agree that the scouts saw something lacking in his offensive abiltiies and perhaps thought he’d never be a major league hitter but you make it sound as though he didn’t know which end of the bat to hold onto and I disagree.

Yeah, and his minor league professional stats are better. What does that prove?
Other than snarky comments is there anything of substance to add or is this just another “bitch about Bocock” session? Do you have any evidence that anyone in the world didn’t think he was a good hitter? Or even a decent hitter?

What
You are trying to claim that he was a good hitter in college. You haven’t provided a single scouting report from anyone claiming that he has anything that approaches a decent bat. You cited his college numbers, and we mentioned that they aren’t actually good. And now you’re asking “any evidence that anyone in the world didn’t think he was a good hitter”?
People don’t write scouting reports talking about how crappy some players are. The lack of scouting reports about his bat is in itself evidence that he was considered a crappy hitter. The fact that every single team in the majors passed on him 8 times, in spite of his great glove at a premium position, is also evidence that nobody thought that he was a decent hitter. The fact that he OPSed .785 with 0 home runs as a senior in a mediocre conference is evidence that he was a crappy hitter.
That’s 3 pretty great reasons (especially the first two) to think that he was a horrible hitter. You haven’t shown any reasons to think that he wasn’t.

I agree with this, and I’m not suggesting that Bocock should remain on the 40-man, but it seems to me that the criticism of Sabean over the Bocock situation is premised on Sabean’s supposed belief that Bocock was ready for the majors when he clearly wasn’t, rather than why this desperation move was made in the first place (which is still Sabean’s fault). I’m not saying that was Irwin’s point, but I’ve read that kinda thing here before, so I thought it would warrant some discussion.
For all of Bocock’s faults, however, he is still a very good defender and is more likely to provide value in the future than Richie. Why release Bocock when you don’t have to. I realize that Richie is providing something NOW at the major league level, however de minimis, but he should have been released months ago and we could have kept English.

Again, the presence of Ivan Ochoa undermines the idea that there was no choice other than Bocock.
FWIW, I’ve always assumed that Bocock was Bochy’s call, and that Sabean just shrugged and said what the fuck, give it a shot.

As I mentioned earlier, we need to keep Bocock around for insurance. If you take Bocock off the roster and someone picks him up, and then Renteria gets hurt, and then Uribe gets hurt, and then Ryan Rohlinger gets hurt, and Freddy Sanchez is still hurt, you’d be facing the very real threat of having to play Frandsen at short. It’s just too risky.

5 deep at every position
with about 22 position players to work with. Not sustainable. If that many guys get injured, the season is toast. I guess you’re being sarcastic.
One of the expansion drafts, we could protect only 11 or so players. So we kept 2 shortstops and lost Dave Burba who became an effective pitcher promptly.

and back in Spring, they showcased English in bigleague camp and talked about him as in the mix for 5th starter. I guess he will get nabbed by somebody. What’s the rules on that for minor leaguers? I guess they sometimes sign with the same team as minor league free agents.

I believe that English is a minor league free agent after the season, anyway. So maybe they chose him for the DFA, figuring he was leaving.

Well he wouldn’t have been a minor league free agent as he was on the 40 man roster. If someone doesn’t pick him up now then he will be a minor league free agent at the end of the year. I’d imagine there’s a very good chance he leaves the organisation either now or in the winter.

But he followed that up by having a pretty bad year in AA. Had he shown anything this year they might have been forced to make a different decision. But 4.20 ERA in the EL with half your home games at Dodd? His K rate was way down and his BB rate was way up. If this was a make or break year for him in the organization (which after 5 years in A ball or lower I’d say it was) then he broke.

I was at Fresno’s game last night in Vegas, and just wanted to say that David Maroul and Ben Copeland’s home runs were absolute MONSTERS over the tall fences (left field and left/center field respectively.) Also, Steve Holm came close to two other homers to right field. I was surprised to see Kevin Frandsen playing 1st base, and he didn’t look the greatest at the plate. Overall, a lot of power shown last night. I was disappointed to have just missed Buster (I saw him in ST and SJ earlier)
I am also curious about Ryan Mantle – Isn’t he a relative to Mickey Mantle, and didn’t we just draft him this year? He batted 9th, and didn’t really stand out.

Mantle
Drafted last year and is I believe a third cousin of Mickey. He has not impressed much at SK with the bat, seems like an adequate fielder with a decent arm.
