And you have put your finger on everything that is wrong with ALL journalism today: access uber alles.

All journalism today — most especially political/policy reporting, but sports and business as well — is so damn intoxicated with access and will do anything to gain it then protect it, rather than work hard to produce some semblance of the truth.

The WaPo’s reporting of Watergate was achieved by real investigative reporting, not because they had “access.” Ditto the NY Times with the Pentagon Papers case, and so forth. They earned those stories by developing the contacts to confirm the facts as they found them— not having it handed to them in press release format because they “earned” the access by carrying the damn water for the subject person. Grrrr.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by Bond16 on Sep 29, 2009 10:15 PM PDT up reply actions

Not only has critical thinking been lost, but so has BASIC REPORTING, you know, actually DOING RESEARCH.

I think objectivity is actually completely overrated, and the pursuit of it (really, the misunderstanding of it) accounts for the second gigantic failure of modern journalism: quoting/televising two opponents on an issue and thinking they’ve done their job as “objective journalists.” Well, NO, lazy clods. ACTUAL journalism would be to go research and report which side is right, or telling the truth, or not making shit up, or has better foundation for its assertions, etc.

The joke is that if Galileo were alive today, cable news would have him on the show in split-screen with someone from the Vatican arguing whether the earth is round or flat, and the “journalists” would think they’ve done their job. Well, what the hell, at least they were objective and didn’t waste any time with critical thinking and research.

my comment about critical thinking and objectivity were for the reader/listener not the reporter. we have to demand responsible reporting from our media outlets.

my biggest pet peave is when a reporter refuses to take a side or investigate an issue but still wants to report on it. so they ask questions instead of report news.

Yes.

And then all this year on all cable “news” channels, the vogue is that NO MATTER THE TOPIC, instead of getting subject matter experts on screen to discuss whatever it is, they just get something called “strategists” from each of the two major parties to yell out their predictable talking points, and only talk about politics and never even touch policy. Such a total abandonment of responsibility invested in the press by the First Amendment.

Canada's all up in arms about it

They’re all like, “Oh no! Marleau isn’t captain anymore! Who shall it be? Boyle? Thornton? Blake? Pavelski?” And then they remember who they’re talking about and insert some snide remark about the playoffs.

But, yeah. It’ll likely be announced tomorrow, along with the final roster cuts.

I mean, we had many discussions on this site that sentimental reasons shouldn’t play into the decision to keep Rich Aurilia on the roster. There was no baseball reason for the rockies to call up that catcher. I am very sorry for his family. And I hate the rockies, but for better reasons than this.

And if you think about it… if someone had told you he would put up a .289/.369 BA/OBP combo at any time this year, we probably would have lol’d you off the planet.

Such a complex psychological test, though.

That’s two separate functions you’re asking the listener to navigate. What if you’re happy but don’t know it? Or, what if you only suspect you’re happy? Do you clap? It seems like a little kid ditty, but it is a diabolical Rorshach test.
