Putting that crap on TV is so bush league too
Instead of talking about the game and the players, we’re subjected to babies with ice cream, “gamers” with ball caps, and bullshit marriage proposals.
Anything to distract from this disgusting baseball product.

Hence one of the reasons I object to it. It’s putting the person on the spot. And I’m not a fan of a SURPRISE! proposal either. You want me to make a life-altering, legal decision and bind myself to you RIGHT NOW without even running the idea by me? Love is great and all, but there’s a hell of a lot more needed in making a relationship work.

I love newspapers. Like you, I grew up with the same writers, but in the Sporting Green. I even like the way the newsprint smells. It’s just comforting, you know?
I’ve done all my reporting in electronic media. I’m getting on the school newspaper staff next year, where we produce a hybrid print/online edition. I’m glad I have experience in new media, but it’s sad that my dream of writing for a major newspaper in hard copy will never come to pass.

I wish you the best! I think the sporting world would be tough to cover for a reporter. Too often its only the writers willing to regurgitate the team’s propaganda that get any real access. The reporters with the tough, honest approach who represent what the fans want to hear seem few and far between.

And you have put your finger on everything that is wrong with ALL journalism today: access uber alles.
All journalism today — most especially political/policy reporting, but sports and business as well — is so damn intoxicated with access and will do anything to gain it then protect it, rather than work hard to produce some semblance of the truth.
The WaPo’s reporting of Watergate was achieved by real investigative reporting, not because they had “access.” Ditto the NY Times with the Pentagon Papers case, and so forth. They earned those stories by developing the contacts to confirm the facts as they found them— not having it handed to them in press release format because they “earned” the access by carrying the damn water for the subject person. Grrrr.

Not only has critical thinking been lost, but so has BASIC REPORTING, you know, actually DOING RESEARCH.
I think objectivity is actually completely overrated, and the pursuit of it (really, the misunderstanding of it) accounts for the second gigantic failure of modern journalism: quoting/televising two opponents on an issue and thinking they’ve done their job as “objective journalists.” Well, NO, lazy clods. ACTUAL journalism would be to go research and report which side is right, or telling the truth, or not making shit up, or has better foundation for its assertions, etc.
The joke is that if Galileo were alive today, cable news would have him on the show in split-screen with someone from the Vatican arguing whether the earth is round or flat, and the “journalists” would think they’ve done their job. Well, what the hell, at least they were objective and didn’t waste any time with critical thinking and research.
Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.
by Mayor of 311 on Sep 29, 2009 10:20 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
my comment about critical thinking and objectivity were for the reader/listener not the reporter. we have to demand responsible reporting from our media outlets.
my biggest pet peave is when a reporter refuses to take a side or investigate an issue but still wants to report on it. so they ask questions instead of report news.
-are there weapons of mass destruction in Iraq?
-is Sadam Hussein in league with Al Qaeda?

by Bond16 on Sep 29, 2009 10:28 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yes.
And then all this year on all cable “news” channels, the vogue is that NO MATTER THE TOPIC, instead of getting subject matter experts on screen to discuss whatever it is, they just get something called “strategists” from each of the two major parties to yell out their predictable talking points, and only talk about politics and never even touch policy. Such a total abandonment of responsibility invested in the press by the First Amendment.

Canada's all up in arms about it
They’re all like, “Oh no! Marleau isn’t captain anymore! Who shall it be? Boyle? Thornton? Blake? Pavelski?” And then they remember who they’re talking about and insert some snide remark about the playoffs.
But, yeah. It’ll likely be announced tomorrow, along with the final roster cuts.

I am totally sympathetic to the family, but I don’t think a company owes it to the player to do bad business. I mean, we had many discussions on this site that sentimental reasons shouldn’t play into the decision to keep Rich Aurilia on the roster. There was no baseball reason for the rockies to call up that catcher. I am very sorry for his family. And I hate the rockies, but for better reasons than this.

Yeah
I think I was a sophomore the year he was drafted. The only reason I didn’t know Giants even drafted him because A’s took another pitcher in the 1st round and it became a big deal. Also, another pitcher who’s also an alum is now pitching for the Blue Jays – I guess they had a great staff that year.
Win the inning.

I was thinking today about how some people were disappointed with the way Panda’s hit in September (.289/.369/.407 before today)
And if you think about it… if someone had told you he would put up a .289/.369 BA/OBP combo at any time this year, we probably would have lol’d you off the planet.

This will make him & his agent even more entrenched that he should get a multi-year deal, thus making him less likely to accept arbitration. I really don’t think this will make Sabean give him a multi-year extension.
