Predict the 2010 opening day roster

Grant's front page post got me thinking about how I expect the team to look next year. I was playing around and came up with a roster - NOT what I WANT to see, but what I'm expecting. Here it is:

Rotation:

Tim Lincecum RHP

Matt Cain RHP

Barry Zito LHP

Jonathan Sanchez LHP

Brad Penny RHP

Bullpen:

Brian Wilson RHP

Sergio Romo RHP

Jeremy Affeldt LHP

Brandon Medders RHP

Waldis Joaquin RHP

Dan Runzler LHP

Some Medoicre FA or Non-Tendered RHP

Lineup:

1) Eugenio Velez / Andres Torres LF

2) Freddy Sanchez 2B

3) Juan Uribe 3B

4) Pablo Sandoval 1B

5) Bengie Molina / Buster Posey C

6) Aaron Rowand CF

7) John Bowker / Nate Schierholtz RF

8) Edgar Renteria SS

Bench:

Ryan Rohlinger 3B/2B

Jamey Carroll or someone like that INF

Before you tell me I have too many bench players, note how many platoons I have pencilled in.

What do y'all expect?

Of course, it already occurs to me that the Schierholtz / Bowker platoon is crazy talk. No way would Bochy share time between two lefties – especially when both are young. Maybe we sign someone like Marlon Byrd or something.

Sanchez – despite the undoubtedly, I think he’ll try to sign him to something like 2y10mil
Uribe – similar
Penny – maybe one year, 7-8 million

I agree with you about the Sanchez #s, and that is also what Baggs speculated after talking with Sabean last week.

Uribe should be a little less, no? Certainly when compared to Sanchez; they had very different careers coming into this year. I’m thinking two year $7/8 million.

And I’m guessing Penny starts with a lower base. $4 million? But with incentives to get up to $8/$10 million.

by San Francisco Slim on Sep 28, 2009 2:44 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Has Penny shown any signs of wanting to stay here? I got the impression he only signed with us because he was looking to join a team in a playoff race. I also thought he said he was open to returning to the AL East.

Penny prefers to play for a West Coast team and could see himself with the Giants next season, but he sounded like a man who will let market forces determine his fate.

“We’ll see,” Penny said. “I’ve loved it here, but I haven’t thought about next year yet.”

If he wants to play for a West Coast team, I could only see SF, ANA or SEA. No way San Diego or Oakland pays for him and no way he’ll go back to the Dodgers.

“Sabean credited Renteria for his intangible contributions, which helped compensate for his struggles on the field.

Molina LOL

It’s hard for me to see him back because…

a) He wants to start still
b) He’ll want a 2 yr/$10 million deal
c) The Giants should not spend $5 mil a year on Bengie with Buster making $400k and use the money elsewhere – i.e. a real corner OF.

Also, I don’t see Penny back because he also wants a multi-year deal worth at least $3-5 million per year and again Giants can use the money elsewhere instead of a #5 starter.

Win the inning.

Bumgarner absolutely needs a year in Fresno.

A month ago, I never expected Molina to be back. But the way the Giants have clung to him, and even started Whiteside over Posey – and with Posey starting 1/10 and thus sucking – I’m increasingly expecting a stupid Molina contract extension.

I assume Garko gets non-tendered an Lewis gets dumped, yeah. Like I said, I forgot about Ishikawa. Maybe he’ll be back – the Giants seem to like to carry multiple first basemen.

I fully expect them to make at least a few moves I can’t possibly anticipate here. But given Sabean’s track record, I don’t expect them to be good moves, or to change the fundamentals of the team.

I wouldn’t dare make any predictions, except to say that it’s probably going to be a long (and possibly strange) off-season. We all got a sniff of the old juice, so it’s hard to imagine the FO leaning toward status quo. Timmy’s payday will be a sharp reminder of how the pitching clock is ticking.

Bowker must play.

Bowker needs his shot next year, and he will produce a lot more runs than Velez as a starter. I would like to see an outfield with Bowker right, Lewis Left, and Schierholtz in center, with Velez and Torres as backups. Had enough of Rowand. Lewis could be removed for fielding purposes late in the game. Third could be Uribe, ss unfortunately Renteria, 2b, could be Sanchez, or if not, Frandsen,/Velez, First Pablo/ishi. Catcher Posey and new backup. Bowker has needed power. Torres can hit from the right side, velez can hit from the left side, they make a reasonable platoon. Freddie Lewis can get on base. Schierholtz is a lot cheaper than Rowand. Uggla will hit at least 25 homers, but he will also hit around 240. Not sure how giants fans will go for that. We have a lot of time to see what shakes.

Well

I really see the brass addressing the offense by going after Holliday strong and reading something like “few impact bats available”. I hope they don’t pursue him, not because i hate Holliday, but that dude is going to be grossly overpaid like Beltran was.

My point is that this FA year sucks the big walrusman, so it’s best to try to find a couple of inflated markets (like 2B) and browse a bit. The idea that we are stuck with Sanchez is horrible thinking, Alderson is a sunk cost and keeping Sanchez around purely because we made that trade is awful. See what it would take for a couple of trades like Crawford or Upton or Uggla.

I like Adrian Beltre for the Giants as it could help Renteria a ton, Sandoval can pick it at 1B. Hopefull he could be had for a reasonable contract and would allow us to implant some bone spurs in his ankle.

Whatever it is, i just hope we don’t go overspending in this FA year and then we can’t make moves in the following year where there is a ton more talent coming loose.

by Giant Voodoo on Sep 28, 2009 3:19 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Beltran hasn’t been grossly overpaid. He’s made roughly $76.6 million as a Met so far, while being worth $95.2 million.

maybe it’s just a hunch because of how hot he got hot for the Astros and then cashed in. Nevertheless i’m very worried Holliday will get paid to be a superstar while only being a great player.

by Giant Voodoo on Sep 28, 2009 3:37 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because it's not my money

I’d be very happy with “great” being paid like “superstar”. At this point, I’m just about okay with Zito (“alright”) being paid like a superstar, and I can almost deal with Rowand (“meh”) being paid like a star.

That said

After seeing Holliday dog it for the A’s, and considering the likelihood he signs with the Cards, I would rather Jason Bay. A 3-4-5 of Sandoval, Bay, Posey could be beautiful. Of course, if you sign Bay, who do you bat leadoff with? I think you have to keep Winn (for defense as well):

Winn RF
Sanchez 2B
Sandoval 3B
Bay LF
Posey C
Uribe SS
Rowand CF
Garkishikawa 1B

Uh, if you’re going to bring back Randy Winn simply because he’s the thing that looks the most like a leadoff hitter would be silly — especially since the dude does not hit like an 8th place hitter this year, let alone a leadoff hitter. I’d rather stick Bowker at leadoff than Randy.

Velez
Posey
F. Sanchez
Rowand

If Winn is back, we have to pay him at least $400,000, which is about three times as much as he’ll be worth. And he’ll be taking a roster spot from a far more deserving OF prospect/FA (which covers pretty much anyone else)

To start an offensive line with Pablo, Bengie, Garko and Uribe. Renteria plays tight end.

I like that line-up and do not hate a Cain/Fielder trade. I hate to say, but I think this a good time to trade Cain with his ERA lowered by a a very low BABIP. His FIP (career and ‘09) is about the same as J. Sanchez’s. Fielder is a perenial All-Star level hitter and youngish. But he is over wieght and I worry about how those body types age.

Also, I sense that is the type of move Sabean would make in order to acquire a big bat.

I like Abreau for the money, however those $s may end up going to F. Sanchez. Sigh.

Totally agree on Bobby Abreu…if we can’t get Fielder, Abreu should hit 4th. He fits our small-ball offensive scheme: a guy who drove in 100 RBI by hitting less than 20 HR.

I think he’s an upgrade over F. Sanchez. However, he won’t be used correctly unless there is a new managerial strategy that emphasizes smallball and stealing bases. Plus, Iwamura can play 3rd, so if the Garko/Ishi platoon fails, FBAL/Rohlinger/Hairston Jr. are at 2B with Iwamura at 3B and Sandoval sliding over to 1B

I don’t see him trading his gamer for a head case. Rowand exemplifies everything that Sabean loves in a ballplayer. I don’t think he sees him as a liability. And Bradley’s reputation in the clubhouse would be enough for Sabean to not even consider this deal.

At least you did the practical thing to do.

Realistically

- Fielder will not be a Giant in 2010, he and Braun are the cornerstones of the Brewers and it would take a lot more than just Cain to get him. Also, I doubt Milwaukee is eager to move him as well.

- HolliBay won’t be a Giant in 2010 unless the Giants grossly overpay for either. Holliday will remain a Card with Pujols & company. Bay will either be in BOS or NYY where they spend a billion each off season and both will need an OF so their wallets will open.

- Winn is not coming back, unless it’s for the veteran minimum which is very doubtful. He’s clearly caught up with his age and his numbers this year does not justify a new multi-year contract at all. Au revoir, classy dude.

Giants should look for 1 or 2 “bargain” corner outfielders who aren’t looking for multi-year deals as a 1 million dollar gamble, sort of like how they got Juan Uribe last offseason. These said OFs will compete with Bowker, Schierholtz, Torres, Guzman, Lewis and Velez for starting jobs with nothing guaranteed. There’s gotta be 2 decent hitting OF’s out of those 7 or 8, right?

Win the inning.

by Scooter Ellis on Sep 28, 2009 10:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

He can be dealt, of course

but what is the cost? Brewers aren’t exactly like the Pirates who are always getting younger and wants to shed payroll to chase the dream that is a winning season. Prince is a legit MVP contender and will likely finish 2nd to Pujols this year.

I’ll worship the ground Sabean walks on if he can deal Cain for Fielder straight up. Another thing is even with Cain anchoring the staff, how did the Brewers improve with just Braun as their main hitter now? It’s not like they have a top prospect at 1B that can take over in 2010.

I’d kill to see Fielder in a Giants uniform as he’s in his prime now but I don’t think the Brewers will trade him unless it’s for an ace starter (which Cain can be) and other prized prospects (besides MadBum & Posey, Giants are thin in that department).

Win the inning.

WTF

Ok I don’t get this obsession with Abreu, really do you wanna see this guy in right at ATT all year?
There is no way he can handle triples alley all year.
Rowand for Bradley?!?!?
Terrible idea we have great clubhouse cemistry why would you bring this loser in.
The Dodgers, A’s, and Cubs all thought it would work………..It didn’t!
We absolutly have to trade Cain for Prince at some point they have to take a chance at something.
Another idea no ones mentioned.
Sanchez, Lewis, Runzler, and Gillispe for Adrian Gonzalez.
Then you keep Cain.
You could trade a small package for BJ Upton, who the Rays want to get rid of.
I’m thinking you could get Rowand to them if we part of his salary and I’d be willing to do that.
Akinora is a bad idea on natual grass needs to have turf to get his 65 hoper through the infield.
I think you F. Sanchez, he is bound to do what he’s donw his whole career and he’s a good 2B.

I would love that Gonzalez deal.

I don’t think the Padres would go for that. What do you think it would take to get Upton? I wouldn’t mind targeting Crawford either in trade or as a FA if the Rays don’t pick up his option.

Never in a Million Years

It would take a lot more than that to get Gonzalez, for one. I dont’ think that package would be able to get Upton. And Iwamura would be a great addition because he could actually lead off for this team and be better than any leadoff hitter the Giants have had over the last couple of years.

by theimmortalbenard on Sep 29, 2009 7:13 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

ok

The Pads almost moved him for less at the deadline, they dont wanna pay him. If we dont make a move at thim LA will. We need to try things creativly, like the Red Sox did 6 years ago.
Upton can be had cheap, they dont want him any more. Crawford will be a FA they wont pick up the option, can’t afford it.
Iwamura didnt even leadoff for the Rays when the went to the World Series, this year he did (when healthy, which btw hes hurt every year. You guys wanna get mad about Sanchez, this is the first season hes had any real injury. Iwamura would have a 25% chance of not being hurt.)

But

What one of those players outside of Sanchez is desirable to the padres. Lewis, unfortunately, has no role with the Giantes. i.e. he maybe DFA’d or at the least have no use to the Giants so no real value. Runzler, while I am impressed, is a lefty bullpen arm, those are a dime a dozen. And Gillespe is a “good” defensive 3rd baseman who makes a lot of errors and doesn’t hit for power. 25 year old CF with 30-30 ability can’t be had cheap, I don’t care if they don’t want him. Teams would line up for him, thus creating a strong sellers market for the Rays. And even if they can’t afford Crawford it would be an epically bad decision to decline his option since they could trade him at 10 mil rather easily. Also, Iwamura didn’t leadoff the year they went to the WS cuz of Upton who you say can be had for cents on the dollar

by theimmortalbenard on Sep 29, 2009 9:54 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Maybe, but better players than Gonzalez have been obtained for far less, heck the Pads have a history of it.

Upton and Crawford aren’t going anywhere. Upton’s stock is low so they aren’t going to get fair value in return for him. The Ray’s will pick up Crawford’s option with the money they saved in the Kazmir deal.
Your proposed deal for Adrian Gonzalez is wishful thinking. The deal will have to be centered around Bumgarner or Posey. We know Posey isn’t going anywhere, so the deal would mean parting with Bumgarner and then something like J. Sanchez and Kieschnick. I think, and maybe others can correct me, the reason teams like the Dodgers and Red Sox can make such deals is b/c their farm systems are stacked from top to bottom. Or in the Dodgers case, most of their top prospects are in the big leagues and they can afford to dangle a James Loney and Russell Martin. The Giants farm is getting there, but is very top heavy right now, making it harder for them to deal their prospects. I do like Adrian Gonzalez though. I’m sure we’ll be talking about it all off season.

What I would try:

SP – Lincecum
SP – Cain
SP – Zito
SP – Pucetas
SP – JMartinez
(OK, so the rotation is kinda sucky; but wait for it….We trade Jonathan Sanchez and his shiny, shiny no-hitter, plus Roger Kieshnick/ Dan Otero/ whoever else the Pads want — to the Padres for Adrian Gonzalez. Not impossible, just takes some work.

C – Posey
1B – AGonzalez (return for Sanchez +)
2B – Downs (cheap local filler)
3B – Sandoval
SS – Uribe
LF – Bowker (cheap local filler)
CF – Rowand (sorry, after AGonzalez, I’m fresh out of ideas)
RF – Schierholtz

FLewis 4th OF, Torres 5th OF
Renteria begins the year at SS – when he fails, backup Uribe takes over
Rohlinger other INF backup.
Whiteside backup C.
Garko?

I could imagine:
CF – Rowand (remember when he was good at leadoff?)
C – Posey (hopefully, less pressure here and better pitches to hit)
1B – Gonzalez
3B – Sandoval
LF – Bowker
SS – Uribe
RF – Schierholtz
2B – Downs

Oh yeah -

RP – Wilson
RP – Affeldt
RP – Romo
RP – Runzler
RP – Medders
RP – Miller
RP – Joaquin

If the Pads were just desperate for us to include Medders, or Miller, or Romo, or whomever, I would do that as well.

So yes, our starting pitching would be much weaker – but we’d actually score some runs. We might even be able to count on wins when Tim and Matt pitch. Zito would have a fighting chance to be a .500 pitcher (yes, I know W-L is a lousy measurement). We’d be hoping Pucetas and Martinez didn’t suck too badly. Maybe Bumgarner is ready in July, although my guess is he’ll need at least a year in AAA.

Wait, what?

Why would the Padres do that? Gonzalez is worth a ton, and Sanchez + mediocre prospects won’t get it done. You want to talk Bumgarner? That’s a start, but don’t think they’ll take anything less.

Also, Rowand wasn’t good because he was a leadoff hitter. He was good at the same time he was a leadoff hitter. Big difference.

Well, I wasn’t claiming that Rowand was a good leadoff hitter, per se. Mostly just reminiscing about the good old days. The weakness with my lineup, as I see it, is a lack of a good leadoff hitter. Rowand did okay for awhile when he was there – MAYBE he could recapture the magic. I agree though – probably not.

I’d be very happy to substitute Bumgarner for Sanchez in my proposed Gonzalez deal. That would give us a better team next year, and MadBum is no certain deal. We would be somewhat pitching-light in the minors at that point, and very reliant on Zach Wheeler turning out well. As such, I’d lean toward selecting a pitcher in the first round next June.

OP is pretty on point, except I’d put Bumgarner into the bullpen for long relief. That way Bochy can yank a starter in the early innings if he looks in trouble and not have to worry about overtaxing the bullpen. If anyone in the rotation (even Zito and his millions) is lagging, switch Bumgarner in.

I also wouldn’t rule out the chance for a major free agent signing this offseason. The giants have built a reputation as a fun team to play for, and their young talent is enormous. Playing for a team that has a chance to dominate for years to come has to look attractive to guys like Jason Bay (must be sick of playing second fiddle to the Yankees every year).

1. Molina, Winn need to go.

2. Why pay 6, 7 mil a year for F. Sanchez when for the same price we can get a sparkplug like Brian Roberts for the same price. Roberts will match Sanchez in obp, doubles, BA, and defense, and will beat him with more steals and more HRs. I’m tired of hearing that we need to get something out of Sanchez because Alderson was traded for him…Alderson is gone either way. Making bad decisions based on sentiment is what has put the Giants in salary holes over the past decade. Same thing with Renteria…he’s not playing good ball, give the spot to a guy who is.

3. Why are people proposing spending 5+ mil on a number 5 starter. We have the best 1-4 in baseball. Sh*t, I’ll pitch in the #5 slot for minimum wage and the rotation would still be better than average. Let Martinez/Lowry/Burgamer/Sadowski have a crack at it. I’m sure one of them can put up at least mediocre numbers…save the 5mm for the offense.

4. I’d love to see a Jermaine Dye power/defensive threat in the lineup, but I’m not sure we can afford him. If not, I’d love to see a low budget high potential signing like Xavier Nady or Rick Ankiel. I give it to Nady over Ankiel (even though I love Ankiel’s defense) because he’s right handed to give some balance to the platoons (Lewis, Bowker, Schierholtz all LH). Worst case, Nady/Ankiel get hurt/under perform again, and we’ve got a platoon OF. Best case scenario, we’ve got an offensive threat for pennies on the dollar to bring balance to our offense.

Brian Roberts 2B
Buster Posey C
Pablo Sandoval 3B
Juan Uribe SS
Travis Ishikawa/Ryan Garko 1B
John Bowker LF/Freddie Lewis LF/Xavier Nady/ RF
Aaron Rowand CF
Eugenio Velez/Nate Schieurholtz

Eli Whiteside C
Travis Ishikawa/Ryan Garko 1B
Edgar Renteria SS
Andres Torres OF
John Bowker/ (1B/LF)Xavier Nady OF/Freddie Lewis OF
Eugenio Velez (2B/LF)/Nate Schieurholtz OF

I think this lineup is a major improvement over last year’s opening day lineup:

C Bengie Molina – Buster Posey
We’ll lose some power, and the veteran leadership, but having a higher OBP, and Posey’s ability to run faster than a paper bag and I think this is an even trade.

1B Travis Ishikawa – Travis Ishikawa/Ryan Garko
I don’t know why people are so hard on Ishikawa. I see him developing into a 20hr, gold glove defense kind of guy. Garko to spell him against LHPs, he can’t be any worse than he was this year. Improvement

2B Emmanual Burriss/Kevin Fransden – Brian Roberts (or Freddie Sanchez)
An established veteran in this slot will be a huge upgrade over the 2nd base by committee over last year. Improvement

3B Pablo Sandoval – Pablo Sandoval
Another year to improve. He’s developing into a 30hr/100rbi kind of guy. Improvement

SS Edgar Renteria – Juan Uribe
Uribe is a good ballplayer. He was good in Chicago (when he played), and he’s been good in SF. It’s hard not to get better production than Renteria provided…Improvement

LF – Fred Lewis – Fred Lewis/John Bowker/Eugenio Velez
All 3 have their upside, and one of them has to hit…right? Improvement

CF Aaron Rowand – Aaron Rowand
I really wish people would get off Rowand’s back. No, he’s not the answer to our prayers and yes, he’s overpaid. But he’s a good balplayer who plays great defense and hustles every play. No one would be complaining about Rowand’s production if there were a couple other guys in the lineup to take the spotlight off of Rowand. Don’t blame the player for management’s poor decision. The guy is still a 15-20 hr/60-80 rbi gold glove defense player…I’ll take that. Neutral

RF Randy Winn – Xavier Nady/Nate Schieurholtz
Anyone is better than this noodle wielder in RF. This will be addition by subtraction. Big improvement.
