Would it anger all the Cain fans if I said where was this Matt Cain all of September when we really needed him?

Yes, because it would be ridiculous to blame Cain when the real culprit for the Giants falling out of the race is pretty fucking obvious and it’s not Matt Cain.

+1

so many things to blame for the giants not making the playoffs… people who probably shouldn’t be on that list:
Lincecum
Cain
Sandoval
The Bullpen (yeah, basically all of them)
Zito (most of the time)
J. Sanchez (most of the second half)
Juan Uribe

You can pretty much pick anyone else who played a major role either playing for or making decisions for the 2009 Giants and blame them and no one would quibble. So why bother picking a small-ish sample size from one of the above and complaining that he collapsed when the team needed him most when the rest of the team was nowhere to be found ALL SEASON LONG?

(also: I’m cranky about the 49ers game too… if I ever hear a Viking horn or see Brett Favre grinning again it will be too soon… TOO SOON!)

whenever you mildly criticize a player around here, everyone’s defense of him is always to act like you’re blaming him and only him for the team’s demise. Everyone knows it’s not Matt Cain’s fault the team didn’t win the wild card. Everyone knows the offense was the problem. That doesn’t change the fact that Matt Cain had a poor September. And if Matt was so worn down, why did he look so fresh today?

Humans aren't "horses".

Is it not possible that Cain was simply worn down from the innings totals? The Giants, and indeed much of baseball, seems to think that there are “horses” who can pitch as many innings as it pleases one to give them. Sure, the old timers threw 300+ innings, but there are various reasons why pitching today might be considered more wearing. I am very uncomfortable when I see Cain and Lincecum getting over 200 innings a season; when they’re older, maybe, but not now. That may not be the issue, but it has to make one wonder . . . .

We all know the offense is nonextistant, and what this team relied on was its pitching. All, I mean all of the starters had a week of bad starts at the most inopportune time. Call it what you will, bad timing, bad luck. Most people will ask “Where’s the pitching when we needed it?”

The scariest thing about Cain’s good outing is that it came when he was pitching to Eli Whiteside. This is the day after Barry Zito has a shitty outing throwing to Buster Posey. You just know this reinforces in career backup catcher Bochy’s mind the importance of a veteran catcher. If Bochy is the manager next year I fully envision Buster being Eli’s backup.

Giants' team ERA is 3.62 this year

Still not even tops in the NL… where does it fall next year?

I assume all starters will not match their performance from this season and certainly not improve upon them.

The offense, which I am assuming will remain largely the same probably won’t get any worse but only marginally better.

Will the slight improvement in offense be enough to offset/overcome the decrease in pitching? My unscientific analysis says the Giants will be about the same team now (barring any significant additions to the roster).

by Every6thDay on Sep 27, 2009 4:26 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I could see Sanchez improving next year. It’s easy to forget now how rough he was for a while there.

Also, last year I wouldn’t have thought Lincecum could improve – but he has.

There are a few offensive upgrades likely. Although I’m not crazy about him, a full season of Sanchez would be an upgrade. Hopefully a full season of Posey will be, too.

I’m not terribly optimistic in general, though. Not with our current management.

Hopefully

we’ll have new management next year.

I can see the same or better production from Lincecum, Sanchez and Zito next year. I actually think that it’s not too unlikely that Cain comes close to this type of year next year, as well. I’m thinking an ERA in the low 3s. Hopefully Brad Penny or someone of his ilk will give us Randy Johnson type of production or better next year.

The big wild card is the bullpen. Affeldt’s contract is up at the end of the year, right? I have faith in Romo, Wilson and…uh…we’ll see about the rest.

I have this impression of relief pitchers that they have alternate good years/bad years, so to me, all the good pitchers won’t be as good next season, and vice versa. Now, that doesn’t mean Justin Miller post-July or Merkin Valdez (all season) become dominant relievers, just that they don’t suck as bad. Of course, I don’t envision either of them being a part of the Giants’ plans next year.

What’s funny to me is when relief pitchers have been the very definition of mediocre for years and then suddenly put together a couple of years of dominance. Guys like Rudy Seanez and LaTroy Hawkins (yes, he was dominant for a while).

Here, in SF, Scott Eyre was a text book example of this.

Many do.

It’s mostly closers who show the syndrome, but to some extent many relievers do. There’s no great mystery about it: when they’re going good, they get used a lot—too much. The next year, the overwork takes its toll, they aren’t so good, they don’t get used as much, and the cycle begins anew thereafter.

and a slightly better record despite also finishing last (66-96)

There’s a lesson in there somewhere.

I remember Dave Newhouse, Sportsphone68 host at the time, talking with Glenn Dickey about the Giants and Dickey said something like: “the Giants thought they could get by losing the 4-3 games by winning the 8-6 games”.

Avert your eyes! POKEMONZ-related bitching to commence in 3...2...1...

Update on my shitty fever-blasted weekend post in the GDT:

Along with the Giants, Golden Bears, and 49ers getting 12/21/2012 started early by the Bay, along with the frustrating sports-based conversations with lunkheaded loved ones that I do not care to rehash, along with my probably-H1N1 fever…

I now find that I have lost the championship and $100 in my POKEMONZ league 8-7-1 because Jorge de la Rosa dug me a near-insurmountable hole with this gem to start the week, and Fernando fucking Rodney gave up 3 hits in 1/3 of an inning today, causing me to lose BAA by .008 and WHIP by 0.020.

If this horrendous karma can be cashed in for neither the Dodgers or Yankees making the Series, though, it’d all be worth it.

Theres the “iM SAYING SOMETHING REALLY STUPID SO IM GONNA PUT IT IN CAPS LOCK”
Theres the “IM REALLY STUPID SO IM GONNA TYPE IN CAPS LOCK ALL THE TIME”
Theres the “POKEMON” – which means “pokemon”

And then theres the “IM SCREAMING IN REAL LIFE” which is being used here

Only the last 2 can be believed

It'd be easier to have fun with it

if I taught in a school district that didn’t require me to always be on top of the kids’ behavior. I can’t do much that is fun because of it; the kids can not handle it. They need to be in their seats and being led at all times.

That’s actually the part of my job that I don’t like; where I teach.

by PiKAgiant on Sep 27, 2009 6:21 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No, it’s more the fact that I teach in a district with a 45% dropout rate. It’s also one of the lowest paying districts in the bay area so good teachers get their experience here and then go and get jobs elsewhere. Students don’t get a great education, there is a lack of discipline and good teaching in many of the lower grade classes, and there is an atmosphere of failure being perpetuated.

It’s not that I couldn’t do groupwork or skits or other creative stuff if I wanted to. It’s more that if I did, ,many of the students couldn’t handle it.

It’s partly the district. It’s district policy to teach from the textbook and we also can’t show anything that is rated worse than G.

A reminder to everyone who wants to watch the Sharks this year: the games are now being broadcasted on CSNCA, not CSNBA. Some cable companies don’t carry that channel, and others only offer it with certain packages, so I’d probably check to see if I have the channel before the Oct 3 game against the Ducks. It sucks, but at least we get 50 games in HD this season, and only 3 games that aren’t locally televised.

Also, first game is at Colorado on Versus (because of Joe Sakic night). There’s been some rumblings about DirecTV maybe broadcasting Versus opening night only, but don’t count on it.

haha, yea, exactly, you know, i got a question about the Winter Classic. Is it just not possible for the Sharks to ever have one?

by PiKAgiant on Sep 27, 2009 10:36 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, it’s only the third year of the Winter Classic, so nobody really knows what the restrictions are. Judging by the fact that the Bruins are playing the Flyers this year instead of the Canadiens (B’s-Habs is the biggest rivalry in the NHL), I’d say that Canadian teams are unlikely to play.

As for San Jose’s chances? I’d put them pretty low because there isn’t any chance of snow, and it’s a California team (NBC hates California). Maybe if the Sharks play an eastern/big name team, or if the event is multiple decades old and they’ve exhausted all the teams with naturally occuring snow, the Sharks might get to host it (the ownership was trying to host this year’s).

Plus there’s the question of where it would be held, since there aren’t really big stadiums in San Jose (unless the A’s build Cisco Park there). It might even end up being in AT&T Park, which would be pretty awesome.

Yea, and it gets pretty darn cold back in the Bay, i remember a few times it’d get down into the 20s, but usually it’s in the 30’s at night, and a night game outdoors at ATT where it’s in the upper 30s would be awesome indeed. I just hope sometime the sharks can host one of those, i just don’t understand why NBC NEVER NEVER NEVER televises a sharks game at all. It makes no sense at all since they’re so consistent, i remember they’d show them on ABC all the time.

by PiKAgiant on Sep 27, 2009 11:04 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

True, but it doesn’t snow, and that seems to be a pre-requisite for sites. I mean, you look at pictures of the first Winter Classic between Pittsburgh and Buffalo and all the blizzard pictures are totally iconic. They brought in snow for the Chicago-Detroit one at Wrigley. All the logos for the one at Fenway this year have snow on them. There’s definitely a trend here.

The whole NBC thing is probably because the games start later over here, going outside of the primes hours NBC wants to broadcast the games. Like, the Winter Classics all begin at 9am for us, but noon for the east coast (which is the most important part of the country, according to NBC).

Wow, now that is truly funny, just because there’s snow makes the game SO MUCH MORE INTERESTING. I agree with what you said, and think it’s bullshit. But in essence, NBC is New York, ABC is Southern California. In my mind, the niners nor the raiders have gotten anything for Sunday Night Football i don’t believe so there ya go, plus i am absolutely getting sick and tired of the East Coast being the most important, where would they be without the West

by PiKAgiant on Sep 27, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Ehh, last year the Ducks-Sharks series single-handedly surpassed the number of nationally broadcasted games of California teams for the regular season. And that was just Versus. Nation-wide broadcasters hate the west coast.

I know that, and I fully acknowledge that. But when NBC’s entire 10 game flex lineup will feature either Pittsburgh, Philadelphia, Washington, NY Rangers, or Detroit, that’s a problem. Also, Western Conference teams will play for national broadcasts 59 times, while the Eastern Conference gets 93. The disparity becomes greater when you group the teams east of the Mississippi in one group – they play on national TV 123 times compared to the west’s 29. At that point, it cannot just be blamed on population disparity.

And then of course, the Sharks have been one of the most successful teams this decade, and yet haven’t been on NBC since they switched away from regional broadcasts. Last year they had a chance against the Devils, but NBC instead aired the 22,495th broadcast of a Rangers-Flyers game. That, quite frankly, pisses me off.

Why would you want to log out of McC? McC is awesome and stuff.

Drove around SF all day, running errands, listening to the game on the radio, big smile on my face. Hearing the call of a Matt Cain start with OMG RUN SUPPORT makes me happy. I understand the logic behind “trade him this offseason, he’ll never be more valuable” but hopefully it doesn’t happen.

There’s not a single Giant I root for more than him.

McC t-shirt sighting!

Whilst leaving LB 127 today I saw a girl wearing a vintage McChrons t-shirt, the one I sort of helped design with the angel quote on the back. Hers was black and mine was white. We said HEY! As she was walking away I said: So wait, who are you on the site? She said, “Just a lurker,” and then she was gone. But she must have been a pretty old-school lurker to have one of those shirts. So that was pretty cool.

Also, jesus jumped-up christ it was not chilly out there. 90 degrees! Yikes! Mad phat sunburn.

Still backing Notgardo, wheresoever he may wander. (Don't forget to wriiiite!)

well, half the school is in the greek system here, and it’s one of the oldest fraternity/sorority systems in the country, has a TON of frats/sorority’s to choose from, plus the friends more than anything helped me out

They were big in my high school, seemed kind of silly by the time I got to college. That said, I know a lot of people who made good friends for life through the Greek system, so it’s good for some people I guess.
