On Villalona: excellent, incredibly sad, but hopeful new article
In this morning's Chronicle.
A couple of brief excerpts from a terriifc, very long article (excellent photos too):
They call him "Papa" here in his hometown. Angel Villalona is the baseball hero you go to when you need uniforms for the youth ball league, bats or gloves for the neighborhood kids, a little money to help with the bills.
It's hard to find anyone in town who's not rooting for Villalona. He is their inspiration for a better life.
"Angel was so poor that many days he only ate once," said Hochi Leandro Nolasco, manager of the La Romana youth league....Out on Nolasco's ball field, a spread of dirt spotted by stones and wild-grass patches, 30 kids ages 6 to 14 practiced hitting and throwing one day last week under a 100-degree sun. It looks the same as when Villalona was there four years ago: Used tires, logs and concrete chunks serve as bleachers, and a highway roars alongside left field.
"Angel is the best," 6-year-old Eligio Parede said breathlessly after smacking a fastball past first base. "He buys us uniforms, gives us bats. He is Papa. I want to be like Angel."
All around, the other players grinned hugely and called out, "Angel! Papa!"
Villalona, through the court and his attorney, has refused interview requests. But his family and friends, who include the co-owner of Tony's, say he had nothing to do with the shooting.
"I was sitting on the sidewalk right here with Angel when suddenly people spilled out of the bar, fighting," said co-owner Jose de la Cruz. "I heard one shot, and everyone left, including Angel."
He shook his head sadly. "Angel only turned himself in to clear things up. People say he did this because they want to squeeze him for his money. He doesn't own a gun. He helps you out if you are short on your bills. At Christmas he gives out food. He is not a troublemaker."
I so hope he didn't do it.

Sad.
It must suck for all these kids who grow up poor and suddenly when they return home in the off-season people are trying to extort them or get something from them. Especially when a lot of them are already trying to give back.

please please please be innocent.
not just for selfish reasons like the giants need a good hitter, but for the fact the he appears to be helping his community.

Err….I meant in the DR not South America….But this story sure looks like Angel has an out…I pray that he certainly is found to be innocent of this terrible crime

Watched Sugar the other night at the suggestion of the other members of MCC. Great flick and it definitely was a wake up call about what these kids go through in the DR. Only hope that it ends well for Angel, whether he ever plays again or not

I hope he is innocent. That said, if he shot a man in the back, enjoy your prison sentence.

If he is innocent, and the Giants retain him and bring him back to the States, he can never go home to DR. With the prevalence of guns there all it takes is one person disagreeing with the verdict. Then Villalona could end up dead.
Everything about this is so sad.

The Photos
were a welcome feature of this piece, as it was the first actual glimpse of the city any of us have seen. That bar looks like somebody would be shot there on a weekly basis if they didn’t frisk people.

Also, one near the end shows a picture of (apparently) angel as a kid, which was interesting to see.

The interesting thing to me is how different the two sides portrayal of Villalona and the events of that day are, as well as how both using his wealth and fame to prove their point.
His accusers say he became an a-hole after he went big time and his think his celebrity might get him off. His defenders say he’s the one their going after because of his deep pockets. They portray him as some sort of guadian Angel, so to speak.
It really struck me that, at 16, he accepted $2.1 million, but along with it came the weight of the world.

Ghettos are all around the world, and I’ve seen a lot of them in my travels, especially around where my family is from. In the DR specifically, you can see why baseball is such a religion there. It really does give people hope that there is better life out there. It’s sad when reality sets in for a lot of these hopefuls. I think I can understand why they hold Angel with such regard.
I really hope you didn’t throw your life away Angel for some stupid shit, and let everyone down.
I can’t imagine growing up in this:

Israel Joseph Rouling stands in front of the house where Angel Villalona was raised as a child in one of the poorest neighborhoods in La Romana.

Great article, I suggest reading the whole thing. It makes me so sad, hearing about all the good he’s doing and what an idol he is for all those kids, and how he bought his mom a new house as soon as he got the money, and then…yikes. I really really hope he didn’t do it.

Inconsistencies
I’m glad the Chronicle finally did a worthwhile article on this and sent a reporter to the DR, since the first article they wrote was, well, not worth reading. In contrast, I actually missed the 49ers touchdown drive since I was reading this one so thoroughly. Heh.
Few things that have come out in it that are very different than the initial accounts.
1. Velete’s family continues to state he was shot in the back. There is a report he was shot twice, but the coroner reported he was shot in the chest and had an exit wound through the neck. This still hasn’t been explained.
2. Velete’s family’s comments on this were all secondhand, which we didn’t know before. More interestingly, his story has changed from being shot while trying to break up the fight to being shot while fleeing out the bar.
3. Nothing in here discusses why the groups got in an argument initially (over who got to sit where), which is a very interesting omission.
The most notable bit in the article is that the bar’s owner claims to have been sitting on the sidewalk with Villalona when Velete was shot. Alibi witnesses tend to be a very good thing.
Brett Pill - .302/.359/.849 at the graveyard for hitters known as Dodd, .996 fielding percentage led all EL 1B (so much for his 'defensive issues' that someone posted'), probably should have been EL MVP (finished 2nd to Cleveland's top prospect), and nary a staff mention on MCC outside of Minor Lines and almost no fanposts!

This article confirms my first suspicions on what this situation could be. I thought about something exactly like this, and now this story… It sucks, but it’s actually best case scenario for Angel. Let’s just hope that justice is served and truth comes out.

Sounds like he could just as easily be an accessory and not actually have pulled a trigger, but the chances that he wasn’t involved at all seem pretty slim.

I would at least call it hopefull
I think if he shot someone in a crowded bar and there was 100 witnesses he would plead guilty

Yes
Someone saying that they were outside with him at the time of the shooting is a terrible sign. Shoot, too bad Graham knows nothing about law while Flu knows all. Because an having someone to be an eye witness saying you werent there is always a bad thing…

ha ha, Jesus Christ, settle down dude. I’m no lawyer (thank God) but I do know that somebody’s friend saying something in a newspaper article is a long way from binding testimony in court.
by FluLikeSymptoms on Sep 28, 2009 5:32 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think the point is that the article includes accounts that suggest the case is far from cut-and-dry, as it seemed when the story broke. It doesn’t take a lawyer to know that this is not yet the worst-case scenario for Giants fans. Bad set of circumstances to be sure, but hardly OJ territory. There’s a lot more to this story. And maybe if he’s cleared it will be a wake-up call for him to get in shape, straighten up and fly right.

Dominican Penal Code
Did some quick digging on the Dominican Penal Code. On September 27, 2004 the new Procedural Penal Code of the Dominican Republic went into effect, which apparently updated age old laws that had been based on French judicial tradition.
Among a defendant’s rights in the updated laws: right to a public trial; right to an independent judiciary; right not to testify against oneself; presumption of innocence and other rights which give hope that a fair and impartial trial on the charges will take place.
Here is the site that contained the information; sorry, I don’t know how to make a link to the site: http://www.phlaw.com/pubs/rejec/en/ren_76-02_Procedural_Penal_Code.pdf

Guess I spoke too soon as it automatically put the link in.
Hopefully, the Villalona family and their attorney have some good investigators that will get to the bottom of what happened. Was the co-owner of the night club really sitting next to Angel or is he just saying that. If Angel didn’t fire the shot then who did. Were Angel and his posse frisked when they entered the club? What do witnesses who are not related or connected to either party have to say? Lots of questions that need to be answered.

while I hope...
Angel is innocent, someone killed Mr. Velete and I hope the guilty party is brought to justice. I’m not an “eye for an eye” type, but I can’t imagine losing a child to a violent death. For the family of Mario de Jesus Velete, I hope the truth comes out and they find some peace.
