2010 Giant's Second Base Options

Well it was a very fun and exiting year for us Giants fans.  Although it has become tough now to accept defeat, I think we should accept it and start thinking of next year.  An important position that's going to need an upgrade in my opinion is second base.  I've heard talk that the Giants won't want to look bad for the Sanchez trade, but also are not willing to pick up Freddy's option of $8 million.  Talk of a two year deal for about $10 million has ensued and it wouldn't be a bad idea.  However, I think the Giants shouldn't just have tunel vision and be completely bent on signing Sanchez.  The market for second baseman is very strong this year and the Giants should accept their horrible midseason trade and make the best choice for the future of our second base position.  Since we don't really have any prospect options, I'm going to look at the second base market with an eye not only for 2010 but for a couple more years.

Star-divide

Freddy Sanchez (32 in 2010): Sanchez started out with a great year this year, but got really slowed down with shoulder and knee injuries.  He's going to have surgery and expects to be completely healthy by spring training.  However, due to his track record, I think that he should be avoided.  He'll put up good BA and decent power numbers but doesn't take walks and I don't think the Giants really need a player like this.  On the other hand, a two year 10 million dollar deal seems fair and I might do if none of the other options I mention work out.

Offer: 2 years at $10 million

Felipe Lopez  (30): Lopez is a solid player that the Giants should have traded for earlier in the year.  He's a solid player who can is a bit unpredictable. Some years he'll be great and other years, he'll suck it up. He's very BABIP dependent, a bit like Juan Uribe , but that is a discussion for another post.  Lopez would be a good buy since he has a solid bat and glove. (Draft pick endangered here.)

Offer: 2 years @ $17 million w/ third year $7 Million vesting option

Mark Derosa(35): Derosa would be a perfect player for us to add because he has HR ability and can draw walks.  He plays decent defense and could really help drive in runs at a five or six spot.  Howver he won't come very cheap and we likely give up a draft pick.  Yet again Giants should explore and I have a price frame(he is a bit on the old side)

Offer: 2 years @ $18 million w/ third year vest for $7 million.

Akinori Iwamura (31): Iwamura would be a good add as well. He plays solid defense, he takes some walks, and he can hit for about a .280 average.  The Rays have an option and we could make a trade if they exercise (maybe a good relief prospect).  No draft payment if we sign him either.

Offer: 2 years @ $12 million

Adam Kennedy (34): Kennedy is also enticing considering his year.  He's a good leadoff guy who can hit for some average, steal some bases, and play decent defense.  He could be decent add as well.

Offer: 2 years @ $11 million

Orlando Hudson (32):  Hudson started this year extremely hot, but cooled down considerably and now is losing time to Belliard.  He seems decent with a .750 OBP, but i don't know if he's a great add because his defense has been declining and he's cooling off.

Offer: 2years @ $11 million

Placido Polanco (34): Polanco is probably the best bet of this group to put up another solid season next year.  His defense has been consistently above average for many years now.  His BA this year is .290 and has a .750 ops which is solid as always.  He will be expensive and could cost us a first rounder

Offer: 3 years @ $26 million

*We could trade for Uggla but I really don't think our farm has the depth to deal for him without Posey, Bumgarner, or Neal so I don't recommend that.  If Sabean wasn't an idiot we could've dealt Barnes and Aldeson (+ some relievers for him), but alas Sabean made a hasty move to try and push this team over the top but it failed miserably and might haunt us later.

So what do you guys think?  Who would you take?  Are the salaries too high or too low?  (by the way, I just like 2 year deals- not too long or too short) Please Vote and Discuss.

Calling the trade for Sanchez “horrible” is, I think, worse than silly—it’s knee-jerk silly. One has no idea how Alderson will pan out, and Sanchez is at least as good as any of the 2nd-base prospects that are listed.

by campanari on Sep 27, 2009 7:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I don't hink it's silly at all.

The Giants trade Alderson for 9 weeks or so of Sanchez and the opportunity to pay him 8M to play for the team next season. Unless the market swings around massively, I don’t think a season of Sanchez is worth 8M, and similarly talented 2B’s (or Sanchez himself) should be available at a similar or lesser salary. Since the value of the option and the opportunity cost of exercising it cancel one another out, the deal essentially becomes Alderson for 9 weeks of Sanchez, which, since Sanchez will have missed most of that time and played poorly when in the lineup, is a horrible deal.

You may not agree with that reasoning, but it’s not “silly”.

If the original epithet “horrible” had this much rational backing when it was written, I gladly retract the “silly” and the “knee-jerk.” I’m against, and have been against, the Giants’ engaging in a rental; if we have rented Sanchez, or if the opportunity cost for keeping him is high, I might agree with “horrible,” even though we get a sandwich pick should he sign with someone else. I also think that, given the injury, we ought to dicker to keep Sanchez for less money than $8M. Given that we lose no draft picks by signing him, and that if we do so, we keep a highly professional 2nd baseman (at least as good, I think, as any of the options in the poll—and most of the McC respondents agree with that), I don’t however see the “cancel one another out” part of your reply.

by campanari on Sep 27, 2009 8:49 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Simple

If the opportunity to keep him for another season isn’t worth the cost of exercising the opportunity (ie: Sanchez isn’t worth 8M a season) then the value of the option and the cost of the option cancel each other out and add nothing to the deal..

VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

by Bhaakon on Sep 27, 2009 9:01 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

If by “since” (“Since the value of the option and the opportunity cost of exercising it cancel one another out”) you mean “if,” then this is obviously true. We would have gained nothing by having an option, beyond what we would have in any case had on the free-agent market. The question is, are we going to base our judgment on his performance, when injured, with the Giants this season? You agree, in your 10:28 post, that when he is in the lineup, uninjured, he is the best choice available. I’m unwilling to say that the trade was horrible unless he continues in 2010 to perform as he did, or worse than he did, this year when hurt. I’m unwilling to get exercised over it unless I see that Alderson turns out to be worth a great deal more.

by campanari on Sep 27, 2009 10:55 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The problem is that he's so rarely in the lineup and uninjured

He was good this season when playing AND healthy, but he only managed to do that about 80 times (he’s appeared in more than 80 games, but he’s obviously been playing hurt since about a week before the trade). Last season he was terrible when in the lineup, and only managed to start 131 games in the field (yes, I know he played in 142, but the reaminder were PH and DH appearances). He’s not a consistantly good hitter, and he’s become increasingly fragile the last two seasons.

He’ll put up good BA and decent power numbers but doesn’t take walks and I don’t think the Giants really need a player like this.

The sandwich pick

I believe that the Giants would not get a sandwich pick for Sanchez. If the option is not excercised I believe it prevents any chance to offer arbitration. So if he signs somewhere else it would be with no compensation for the Giants. Of course I am usually wrong, as my wife is more than happy to point out.

by ptizzy on Sep 28, 2009 3:13 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Even if they can offer arbitration

There’s a excellent chance that he’d accept and get essentially the same award as his option.

VAE PVTO DEVS FIO

by Bhaakon on Sep 28, 2009 6:59 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No way would he get $8 million in arbitration. He made $6.1 million this year, only played about 110 games, and is near the bottom of the list of qualified 2B in RBI, R, H, HR, and PAs. I would say the $6.1M he got this year would be the maximum he could get in arbitration.

I was under the impression he did not reach his plate appearance total for that 8mil option to kick in. I may be getting some numbers confused however as I am going off of memory.

by dannyschmanny on Sep 28, 2009 10:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

The plate appearances would’ve vested the option. Since he didn’t make it, its a club option now (with a $600k buyout)

You have to differentiate the player from the actual trade.

You’re right Sanchez, without injury, is far and away better than anything we can put up in the immediate future. The problem I had with trade at the time was that everyone following baseball knew the Pirates were desperate to ship him off; this was made even more apparent by the public low-balling on contract offers from the team. The other thing to consider was that there weren’t a lot of buyers for a 2B other than the Giants. We were essentially in competition with ourselves.

You want to see a walk? Then go watch the mailman.

how good is Bond down at double A.

He seemed to be one of the best hitter in the league, not for power, but for average and some gap hitting.

by bradleybear on Sep 27, 2009 8:00 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

true that but....

I don’t know why the Giants didn’t promote him?

by HarbirD on Sep 27, 2009 8:05 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Well, he had been promoted pretty aggressively to AA in the first place. He only spent 87 games in A and A+ ball combined. Also, 2B was a pretty crowded position in Fresno, what with Frandsen, Downs, Rohlinger, Burriss all shuffling around.

Also, judging by Fred Stanley’s comments in a recent BA article, it sounds like Bond’s going to be challenged to get up to speed defensively at the major league level. Fred’s most direct comment on Bond’s defensive abilities was essentially, “we know he can hit — we’ll just keep plugging him into positions until we find one he can handle.” If that’s not 2B (and it sounds as if his lateral movement if fairly limited) I don’t know where else his skillset will play.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

Yeah, with no power to go with his high OBP, he really needs to play 2B or possibly third. But this is an org that thinks Eugenio Velez can play second, so I don’t see what the problem is.

We’ll see how he does in Fresno next year.

by taliesin on Sep 29, 2009 11:28 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I don’t like the idea of resigning Sanchez. Yes, it means we gave up Alderson for essentially nothing, but at this point I’d like to cut our losses and give someone else a shot. Sanchez’ injury history and his lack of OBP, power, and speed means he is just a .300 hitter and not much else. Yes, that is valuable, but we’re going to need more than that considering Renteria has SS, Pablo has 3B, Rowand has CF, Garko should have 1B, and LF/RF are hopefully going to be filled by Lewis/Schierholtz/Bowker/Torres/Velez. There aren’t a lot of opportunities to upgrade offensively.

I voted for Iwamura, simply because I think he was a good player for the Rays, he’ll come cheap because he was hurt last year, and he’s not that old (DeRosa, Kennedy, and Polanco scare me).

But I’d give the job to Juan Uribe, because I know Bochy won’t give him Renteria’s position and I’d rather have Panda at 3B. Uribe has posted very solid numbers this year, he’s been a good player in the past, and he’s very open to returning to the Giants. I doubt we’d have to commit to more than 2 years/$8M, which makes him the cheapest option here. He hits for a good average (if his BABIP is high), he can hit homers, and he plays a good defensive 2B (11.1 UZR/150 in 38 games). Not too many walks, which I don’t like, but then again Sanchez doesn’t walk either.

by quincy0191 on Sep 27, 2009 8:07 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

Im afraid Uribe will go back to his usual self. It is pretty amazing that his OPS was up over 150 points this year. I’d like to keep him and Sanchez so Uribe can take over for Renteria if he sucks again next year, but I would imagine Uribe will get an offer to start somewhere for good money. Tough call on the Giants part whether to come up with that kind of cash

Looking over that list, I see a bunch of guys who have been good at some point in the past, but who are all now in their thirties and are longshots to provide much help in the future. Polanco’s the best of them, but he’s 34 and has already been in decline for a couple of years.

Two or three of them will prove to have some gas left in the tank, but who knows which ones. I’d just announce Frandsen and Velez as my second-base candidates, then wait to see which veteran is still sitting around in March without a job, as Beane did with Orlando Cabrera last year.

Belliard

I’m pretty swamped and can’t double check this, but I believe Ronnie Belliard is a FA. If Freddy doesn’t come back, the Giants should sign Belliard, who is a Super UT guy. He had a subpar year playing in the 8th circle of Hell aka Washington D.C., but I think we know what he’s done since being traded to the hated ones. He normally rakes lefties (career OPS of over .800 vs L), and he’d be a solid platoon partner for Gene Veles (my name for Eugenio when he bats vs. lefties) at almost any position. He’s so-so at almost any position, but that’s pretty much the definition of a Super UT.

After watching Frandsen this season, I think it’s time to say goodbye. Kid can’t hit the curve ball or anything that doesn’t come in on a ruler. Sabean should admit his error and say goodbye to Freddy Sanchez as well. He’s been in a decline for three years and honestly, other than a couple of solid years in Pitt., he’s never been a star. It was a bad gamble to begin with but I can understand the decision to do something. Of course, that would have been more justified prior to finding out that he needed surgery prior to the trade.

And I probably wouldn’t pay even that much for Freddie. I see him as Ray Durham his last 2 years with the Giants. Actually worse, because Freddie didn’t exhibit any interest in trying to play hurt even in the midst of a playoff run.

You mean besides the 25 games he played after he found out he needed knee surgery?

Im fine with that. Im happy that he didnt play. Renteria hurt the team by playing injured, and playing horribly.

Agreed, playing injured is vastly overrated in baseball.

Unless the player is exceptionally good or the injury minor. Baseball’s an extreme skill sport, and even minor disruptions in delicate motor functions can render an otherwise fine player useless on the field.
