Need Help from McCoven

I started my first job in baseball today.  I'm now the pitching coach for the Kingsborough Community College baseball team.  One of my first assignments is to bring around this one kid.  He reminds me of someone, I just can't pin it down.  I need some of your help to jog my memory, or steer me in another good direction.

Star-divide

One thing I am going to do is show him tape of guys that he can learn from.  Here's my scouting report after about 4 batters.  From my description, tell me which major leaguer this reminds you of:

- RHP

-Tall

-Medium build

-Straight over-the-top arm action

-Good velocity

-Good downward plane on the fastball

-Slow wind-up

The first guy that came to mind for me was John Garland... but that can't be the best I can come up with, can it?

… though his velocity is only so-so.

This may work...

Though he’s not that tall…

Dan Haren?

I really think Dan Haren is the best suggestion.

We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

Its good.

But Haren’s leg hangs up there too much for this kid. It may be good if I find that’s what I’m going to have to do with him… but I don’t want to mess with too much at first. Thanks, though!

that’s why I think it’s good. Although I have no idea what you’re trying to do with the kid, but that pause forces you to get balanced.

We're all basically Pedro Feliz.

Balanced, but it doesn’t help your momentum. (Of course, Timmy drifts through the balance point.)

David Aardsma?

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

I don't know if you're poking fun at me or...

I guess I deserve it, if so…
Anyway, Aardsma throws more 3/4

I wasn’t poking fun at you so much as I was just having fun. Nothing personal intended.

I like the guy featured on the front page.

He’s alright, I guess.

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

Hey! While you’re here, would it be okay if I incorporated a few of The Little Giants into some lecture slides? I need to briefly explain the game of baseball to Norwegians. (There, that didn’t sound as silly as I thought it would.)

I don’t mind at all. Go for it!

Briefly? Good luck.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Sep 25, 2009 5:55 PM PDT up reply actions

Eh. Just a cursory intro is all that is necessary. Besides, these Norwegians are smart.

I had to google Kingsborough Community College to find out where it is—southern tip of Brooklyn, bordered by Sheepshead Bay and the Atlantic.

Nolan Ryan.

I don’t actually know if that’s applicable, but my dad idolizes that guy… it’s like his default example of a pitcher.

Utter frustration and futility.

My dad too...

I have the Tom Seaver book “The Art of Pitching”, and even Seaver can’t stop talking about him through most of the text.

and he’s a 3/4 guy, too. Thanks, though.
