Actually when he first started throwing the change a lot I was surprised by how hard it was. I definitely remember seeing him throw some offspeed pitches in the highish eighties.

Also, I think the movement is at least as big a part of lincecum’s changeup as the speed differential. And he’s able to keep the movement so late – I remember seeing a graph showing different pitches’ trajectories to home plate, and at the point in time where the hitter has to decide whether to swing, the changeup and fastball looked identical.
