Rowand for Bradley, who says no?
Is Bradley's talent worth the headaches and saved cash? Rowand owed $36 million over 3 years, Bradley owed $21 million over 2.

I say no
There’s a reason Milton Bradley has played for seven different teams in 10 seasons. The next team to harness his talents while somehow preventing his meltdowns…will be the first.

I don't remember any meltdowns with the A's
But still, not good odds.

I don’t think he did have any with Oakland. Perhaps his friendship with Nick Swisher kept him calm.

Yes, please! If he stays healthy, he’s a good player, arguably better than Rowand. Less money over less years. I think his meltdowns would be less playing in SF, where he probably won’t run into nearly as many racists that piss him off.

…but I’d say yes. Frankly, if they made this deal and then released Bradley the next day, they’d be in better shape than they are now. Saving $15M > Three more years of a declining Rowand.

I say yes
Losing Rowand would be long term addition via subtraction. Leave Andre Torres out there for a year, put Bradley in RF, and use the young kids to take over when Bradley is hurt. Shoot, DFA Bradley for all I care, as long as it gets Rowand’s stupid contract off of our hands. We are paying way too much money for way too long for Rowand who is, at best, slightly above average, and only going to get worse from here.
I also believe that Bradley can be bought out after one more year on his contract for something like 3 million. If that option still exists after a trade, it is a no brainer.

3 years from now
a whole year of rowand will be really bad. it’s bad enough already….. the cubs will have to pay a pretty significant amount of salary for someone to take bradley off their hands. i would entertain it for the right price.
by giantdonkey on Sep 22, 2009 5:44 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Rowand wasn’t a bad player this year. He was actually pretty decent for a CF. A .750 OPS for a CF is actually pretty good, especially considering his defense.

Fuck no. Rowand has a positive attitude. Bradley does not, to say the least. Rowand plays plus D in center. Bradley’s legs will explode if he even stands in center. Rowand this year was a better hitter than Bradley, although it’s hard to argue he’s actually a better hitter. Either way, an occasionally injury-ridden, decent-hitting good defensive CF beats the hell out injury-ridden clubhouse cancer who can hit but not do anything else.

I’d do it. 1 less bad contract, and Milton I think would be fine here. He was never a real problem in Oakland or Texas. Two places that are pretty tame. SF is a similar environment. Chicago…not so much.
Not to mention he actually knows how to take pitches and reach base at a decent clip. I’m so fucking sick of seeing Rowand K on three pitches.

I say yes. Rowand might get even worse. Bradley would be a different kind of pain, but it’s 1 year and $15M less pain.
by Grant on Sep 22, 2009 9:48 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
i agree
Bradley having a horrible year is still better than rowand, he has a .380 obp and a .775 OPS. He’s a year removed from a 1.000 ops. If I’m going to overpay for an outfielder i want one who actually has the potential to be good, the fact that he comes off the books next year is just icing on the cake.
by zeisenbe on Sep 22, 2009 10:01 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I say absolutely yes, Bradley is a far superior hitter, and Rowand’s defense will be pretty rough in cf three years from now, and Bradley’s pretty, shiny OBP would look amazing in our lineup
Congrats to my soul mate and birth brother Zach Wheeler on being drafted into greatness. Should I just buy my Wheeler jersey now, or wait till my next birthday?

after carefull consideration, i am in the “yes” camp. on a team absolutely chock full of hitters who give away outs, rowand is consistantly near the top of the list. he’s a good guy and a pretty darned good centerfielder, and i’m sure his teamates love him, but he’s sooooo NOT worth the money.
having bradley gives THIS team a legit #5 hitter to go with # 3 pablo. wouldn’t take much to sign reed johnson ( or like) to have some experience in cf to platoon. the $$ saved from rowand could be used to pay some of fielder’s salary.
3-4-5 pablo, prince, milton
almost worthy of a major league line up.
by giantdonkey on Sep 22, 2009 10:59 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
i’ve been thinking about this for the past couple days, and i say yes. put bradley in rf, platoon velez & torres in cf, and hopefully a free agent or trade in lf. lineup could be
velez/torres – cf
sanchez – 2b
fa/trade – lf
panda – 3b
bradley – rf
posey – c
gark/guz/ish – 1b
rent/uribe – ss
i realize you’d have velez in center, but at least rowand would be gone. also, the free agent/trade could also be a 1b or 3b. and we could put one of our roving list of aaaa players out there., also counter point, would you trade edgar for bradley?

I’m in the no camp, simply because I don’t think there’s been a team yet that said ‘Boy, Getting that Bradley really worked out for us’. I may be jaded by spending all of the LA series thinking how well the Ethier for Bradley trade worked out – for the Dodgers.
Utter frustration and futility.

His numbers for Oakland were inferior to Ethier’s career averages… I don’t consider him the missing piece that allowed them to succeed, especially considering what they gave up to get him, but I’m hardly authoritative on the subject as I consider paying attention to the A’s as enjoyable as having my left nut struck with a ball peen hammer.
I did not realize how damn good he was for Texas, but all I really need to know about him is:
Suspended for rest of season for detrimental conduct as of Sep 20, 2009.
You don’t want that guy on a young club.
Utter frustration and futility.

I’d do it. But I don’t want Rowand to play anyway. Savings the next two years, 12 mil off the books in 2012 when Rowand will probably be dead weight anyway, and a hitter that fits in the middle of a major league lineup. A .775 OPS in a down year blows almost everything else on this team away.

So last night I had too much time to think
And this is what I came up with. The Natinals need pitching, we have pitching.
Could we work out a deal of either Cain or Bumgarner for Zimmerman? I know the Nats want him to be the face of the franchise, but how could they resist a one-two of Cain/Bumgarner and Strasburg? Then we also figure out how to get Willingham along with that, maybe offering Rowand or Lewis. I know all this sounds crazy, but imagine the lineup we would have.
Velez
Sanchez
Pablo
Zimmerman
Willingham
Posey
Nate/Bowker
Renteria/Uribe
I know, this is probably in insane idea that’s a product of late night thinking, but dangit, that lineup looks very good. You could have an OF of Willingham/Nate or Velez, if he’s not traded/Bowker(I think he might have highest trade value, due to his minor league numbers)or Nate.
You may begin taking apart this idea.
Insanity is just a state of mind.

To get Willingham
I obviously meant Rowand or Lewis+others. I don’t know what it would take, but Rowand could take over in CF for them and be an instant popular player.

I know it does. I’m not suggesting straight up. Rowand as part of a bigger package, since the Nats want some major league talent. I don’t know who would be added to it. It would take a ton to get Willingham and Zimmerman, and it would destroy our farm, but it’s nice to think about. Maybe if we still had Alderson and Barnes around…
I was just merely rosterbating.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
