Angel Villalona Link Thread

It would seem a little odd to not have a main page thread on the Angel Villalona accusations, so this is kind of an open thread/link dump. I can't even formulate an opinion on this. It's probably a story that's so horrible it transcends any trival thoughts of baseball, signing bonuses, and minor league systems. I'm still holding out for the 1% chance that because we're hearing the story through an international game of telephone, the real story is far less sinister. It sure doesn't sound good though, and it makes my stomach turn.

This might be the worst news I've ever heard as a Giants fan, and I can't imagine what the folks close to the Augusta and San Jose organizations are feeling.

The "everyone has guns" thing is familiar to me

My production plant manager is from Honduras, and well before the current unrest, he would always talk about how everyone has guns there, and it’s the Wild West to some degree. I’m sure there are significant differences between the two countries, but, like I said, it’s a familiar theme. Not an excuse, mind you, but context at least.

I noticed the same thing in Costa Rica

I Spent a week down there training a company who had purchased some software. The company owner and his financial head who drove me around never went anywhere without their guns. Both had been mugged multiple times by armed bandits before acquiring guns.

I really don’t know what to say. It’s a completely tragic situation. The consensus from the various quotes seem to be “Let’s wait for more information to come out.” Like you said, there’s a slim chance that this story is getting twisted in some form or another.

I think there's an extreme likelihood of "lost in translation"

But still, the basic facts that have emerged so far don’t paint a pretty picture.

I don’t think it’s a definite that either Posey or Bumgarner starts the season on the big league club. In fact, I’d be surprised if they did.

At this point, I’d say Bumgarner is definitely going back to the minors for more seasoning. And unless the Giants do something silly, Posey should be on the big league club to start next season.

It’s not often Brian Sabean hands a starting job to a rookie. And if Posey doesn’t start for the Giants, then he needs to in Fresno.

While that’s true, it’s not very often that the Giants have had a hitting prospect like Posey in their system.

by deuce deuce on Sep 21, 2009 11:02 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

That’s true. Posey is by far the best position prospect the Giants have had under Sabean. Uncharted waters.

Of course, this is all MOO if Sabean isn’t brought back.

I feel like since he plays such a key position that really influences the defensive side of the game, until Posey proves (however the hell he is supposed to do that while sitting on the bench I don’t know) he can handle everyday catching duties in the major leagues my guess is we’ll have a Bengie/Posey split, or someone else on a one year deal to split time with Posey.

Giants: Giants prospect accused of murder
The News
Giants prospect Angel Villalona is the prime suspect in the murder of a 25-year-old man in the Dominican Republic, according to the Associated Press.

Our View
Yikes. Villalona was signed by San Francisco in 2006, receiving a then a club-record $2.1 million signing bonus. He was voted the top player in Arizona’s rookie league two seasons ago. In 74 games at Single-A San Jose this season, he hit .267. It’s looking like that will be as high as he climbs in the Giants’ system, since Double-A Alcatraz does not exist. He is only 19.

Double-A Alcatraz? Is this really a time to making jokes?

Garrett Broshuis’ blog posting was awesome. I like the way he writes. Seems like a smart guy. He’s right, if this was a mutual fight turned into a gun fight, and an unarmed man lay dead with AV’s bullets inside of him, AV needs go to a DR prison for quite a few years. The DR is not Disneyland. It’s more like the wild west, which I can only imagine how the Justice system and prisons are in that country. I hope he has some witnesses who can speak for him in court. I think we just lost a valuable, talented prospect to a sad situation.

Pro Baseball players are constantly targeted in the DR and the rest of the Caribbean/Latin America, IE: Uribe, Torrealba. As Broshuis points out, the baseball player factories in the DR are pretty much corrupt, immoral, and inhumane.

Damn, this is just bad, all the way around.

by flyonthewall on Sep 21, 2009 12:00 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Because Pedro Martinez, Vladimir Guerrero, the Alous, Julio Franco, Juan Marichal, Alfonso Soriano, David Ortiz…

In other words, MLB brings players in from the Dominican Republic because it’s to their advantage. Players come from the DR because, if they succeed, it’s to their advantage far beyond any opportunities that exist on the island. It’s not always pretty, but that’s pretty much how capitalism works.

“Back in the day” teams didn’t pay them huge amounts of money. Conditions were/are so bad over there, the players would pretty much come for a glove or a pair of cleats just to get the opportunity to play in the good ol’ USA.

It’s a stupid move to give ANY 16 year old a couple million dollars to play baseball, regardless of where they are from, but 16 year olds can’t be drafted in this country. Like a kid in a candy store, with more money than he knows what to do with. All equals trouble.

I was kind of wondering about that when I heard the news. Why isn’t he with his team? Yeah, I know he’s injured… but his freaking teammates are in the freaking playoffs!! He didn’t want to be there to support them? Do the minor league teams routinely ship injured players back from whence they came? Of all the Dominican players in the majors, how many have gotten into this kind of trouble? Yes, the DR has much higher crime rates than the US, and Villalona apparently comes from a particularly rough area. Worse than the rough parts of, say, Detroit or Baltimore? Maybe. But you’d never suggest that we should forbid prospects from those areas from ever coming home, would you?

stupid question but

i assume there is no compensation from the MLB for having our top prospect in a dominican jail (ie. draft picks)?

I assume that depending on the ruling, the remaining portion of his contract will be voided. I’d be doubtful of receiving any other kind of compensation (not that a voided contract is compensation in the strict sense of the word) outside of that, but I’m really not that knowledgeable about this.

I’m pretty sure cloudydays means would the team receive compensatory draft picks to make up for the loss of a player. In that case, my guess would be the answer is no. I suppose an analogous situation (in this respect only) would be Adenhart. Did the Angels get any kind of compensation? I doubt it.

Depends on how the contract is written

My guess would be, however, that “getting convicted of murder” would constitute a breach of contract. In that case, the Giants may be able to try to claw back his signing bonus or a portion thereof. Again, depending on the terms of the contract.

Obviously it would be better if it turns out to be self-defense.

However, the things they’re saying now jibe with the (very little) I’ve read before.

The story about his host family in San Jose, for one. It talks about them (Ed & Donna Musgrave) taking Villalona and Wilmin Rodridguez to the Santa Cruz Boardwalk where neither of them would get on any of the rides. He comes across as a shy kid, no hint of machismo.

Goofus Jr. is off two a nice start in SFLL Fall Ball (13 & 14 year olds) after two games:

His line right now is hilarious as his hitting is improving, but not tradtionally his stong suit: 800/850/1200

But allow me to publicly roll my eyes:

I was curious what other SBN blogs were saying about the whole situation. One of the mods on everyone’s favorite classy blogs, Purple Row, mentioned in a front page post on PR and in a comment on True Blue LA that our top prospects were “taking a beating” lately. From a SJ game in late April, before MadBum and Posey and Crawford were moved up, before Alderson and Barnes were traded, here are two pics of two players who came of the clubhouse one after the other. Both as nice as could be. The picture of Angel makes me extremely sad.

This seems new?

http://diariolibre.com/noticias_det.php?id=216475

by Merope on Sep 21, 2009 2:43 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Google translation since I had to look it up anyway

Miguel Farias, brother of the victim and with tears in his eyes, said Villalona was Angel who killed moments of the wake in the street Gaston Fernando Deligne number 132, where the victim lived a few blocks from where the tragedy occurred.

Families of Mario Felix de Jesus argue that Valette was accompanying a friend who had a birthday and one of those who accompanied the player pushed the friend who tried to separate Mario being wounded by a shot in the back. The victim, who left an orphaned child of two years, is the son of Mario Felix de Jesus and Mrs. Taty Vedette who are appalled by the tragedy.

It was not possible to know which version of the owner of Tony D’supercold Brewer Center, where the event occurred and where in the past there have been deaths and quarrels, without being put a stop to it.

So, essentially, two groups of drunk young men got into a shoving match at a shady bar, tensions escalated as it spilled into the street, and things went way too far. This is tremendously sad, but achingly familiar.

It’s new, and in glancing at it it looks like there was a friend of the murder victim (who was there with someone else celebrating their birthday) who got into it with a friend of Villalona’s at this place, which apparently is a really rough bar. The dispute is going to be who shot whom.

I’ll get to it in a bit, working on looking up the commentaries on the other papers since there’s more detail on the bar there.

The victim left a 2 year old son.

Two corrections since my friends said close but no cigar. #4 was the brother being interviewed at the wake, which I mistook as the tussle outside (although it’s still quite possible). #5 was the family of the victim saying he was shot trying to separate the two by Villalona, but in the back, which isn’t consistent and what threw me off.

This is a picture of the bar.
This is a story about the guy who got killed a few months back.
This has a blurb at the bottom about a guy being arrested at the place for selling coke.

And I’ve also been told that the really rough bars have women at the walls and guys in the middle, as shown in the video. I’m sure we’ll all know more in a couple months.

That last picture is heartbreaking. As many have said – this is just unbelievable. Thanks to the guys who have been keeping us all updated on this, especially Harold, as it seems like he has put MANY hours into finding out what happened for all of our benefit – whether bad or good.

Possible Update?

this is gleaned from the profound wastebasket known as ESPN.com comments—>

~Just in to our int’l news tip line at ESPN.com, legal counsel for Villalona to speak later today. He is quoted as saying initially, “We have serious and compelling evidence to clear Mr. Villalona of these absurd charges… He was simply a young man in the wrong place at the wrong time.”

~Stay tuned for updates

Where is this in comments?

Brett Pill - .302/.359/.849 at the graveyard for hitters known as Dodd, .996 fielding percentage led all EL 1B (so much for his 'defensive issues' that someone posted'), probably should have been EL MVP (finished 2nd to Cleveland's top prospect), and nary a staff mention on MCC outside of Minor Lines and almost no fanposts!

Weird – the guy has a new profile, so I’m not holding my breath.

Another picture

Comes from this article from El Nacional (first time they’ve published on this) – only new news is that apparently the victim was shot twice. That would explain the differing reports of bullet wounds as well as put one heck of a dent in the self-defense argument. Other papers don’t have anything we don’t already know.

Regarding the body armor, one thing that sadly came up in discussion with some of my friends, believe it or not, is his skin color. Darkness of skin matters a lot down there (take a look at the picture of who is escorting him up to the courtroom, along with those in the bar in that video). I don’t know this, but I strongly suspect that he’s being viewed by many in the DR not just as a millionaire spoiled brat athlete-murderer, but a millionaire lower class dark-skinned spoiled brat athlete-murderer who is about to get his comeuppance.

One small bit of evidence towards that – someone who claimed to be the victim’s older sister (and I really hope it’s not her, poor woman has an orphaned nephew to deal with now along with losing her brother) posted a comment on one of the articles with terms and implications that wouldn’t be acceptable up here even by the relative of a murder victim. Of course it’s anonymous commentary on the internet, so who knows.

So, yes, that may be why he needed body armor and a closed courtroom.

There is probably some irony in having one of Pill’s first supporters writing as much as I have on this case, but I really hope Villalona didn’t do it. Unfortunately, my gut is that unless we hear something very loud from his defense team very quickly, he probably did.

btw, multiple shots do not necessarily hurt a self defense plea—in fact, it is to be expected. Unless the weapon is a rifle, a shotgun, or a high powered hand gun, you will usually have multiple shots, if you have shots at all.

Whoops, left that one unclear by omission too. This is what I get for hitting post as I’m running out the door, bleh.

You’re right – just doubletapping isn’t a problem (unless you’ve got a law enforcement background, but that’s another discussion).

What I was referring to is that we have a coroner report of a shot entering the chest and exiting the neck confirmed by multiple sources – yet the family also said he was shot in the back, which seemed confusing. Now that we have two shots confirmed, if he was shot in the chest twice, not a biggie.

If the family is right and there was a second shot was in the back after the first shot was in the chest, though, I’d imagine that might be a bit more trouble to explain as self defense, though.

I’d ask a public defender friend who used to work capital cases what she thought about this if I wasn’t so sad about it. Sigh.

Assuming you are referring to me, I find that comment very offensive, as I would NEVER wish for anything bad to happen to anyone, regardless of which player(s) I support. There have been a lot of comments on here by everyone. I definitely have not posted near as much as you have, as you have been providing us all with up-to-date information on this whole mess. I will make no further comments.

He was referring to himself, check out his sig.

Yes, I noticed Roger’s sig, but I do comment a lot on Pill and have received a lot of flack for it. Now that my Defenders are long gone, have been posting on other things. No as informed as most of the regulars on here.

Um, no, I was referring to myself. Sorry if you took offense by taking that the wrong way, and feel free to continue posting.

Oh, and PS – I warmed up to Pill after you did, so I’ll take full credit for joining the bandwagon late. :)
