Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Doing some reading for my polisci class, and I had a laugh at this from the textbook:

In the 20th century, Iraq has been a second-rate power at best.

SECOND RATE AT BEST! Figured you could use a laugh after the dismal day we all had around here.

Man

your professors are going to have their hands full this year! Not your ordinary freshman (no gurls internets blah blah).

I have one of my dad’s textbooks from a World History class he had at your school in the late 50’s… it’s awesome, discussing “Red China” and “dominoes” and making all kinds of ethnocentrist observations about Africa, the “Orient”, etc.

You’re already on your way to leaving some nasty highlighted nuggets for your kids!

I am not a frosh. I’m a “junior” although I have three years to go. The study abroad requirement for my major might set me back to four years to graduation. I get all the good upper division classes like the polisci class (International Organizations—basically a more in-depth do-over of my international relations class at JC).

It could be worse. I met a 66 year old dude in my geology class a few years ago. He never went to college, just served in the military and then worked to retirement. He retired, and decided he was going for a bachelor’s degree. So at age 27, I’m not the oldest undergraduate student ever.

nah

I’d guess funding/budget cuts mean folks haven’t been roaring out in 3.5 years anyway, so your fellow “juniors” probably have a decent age range.

Is there a big culture shock in the band? I wouldn’t expect too many grad students/6th year seniors etc. are much for marching… it certainly explains the Katy Perry I razzed you about in the other thread :)

I am the oldest in marching band, though not by much. Another in the band turns 27 this week—and he’s been here for 10 years. In the band for 10 years. I’ve been slogging through college courses since I was 20.

I’m struggling more with getting my chops back after an eight-year layoff than the being old stuff. People insist I look 18 or 19 still, so nobody knows I’m old until I tell them.

Does Iraq sit alone at a table?

They refuse to recognize Israel, so I think they choose to be alone at the table.

That’s a pretty big dinner party. Not a particularly posh one, but lots of company.
