Post-Game Recap: Playoff Hopes Dim Even More
What an amazingly bad day for San Francisco baseball. The playoffs are almost totally out of reach. Tim Lincecum's Cy Young chances were hurt. It all pales next to the Angel Villalona news, though. Everyone in the organization should have just stayed in bed today.

That and the line ups. I figures t’09 post season was up after the Pad’s series. The stubourn instantce to keep playing Renteria ( instead of sending him to get his elbow worked on) and the only OFers that can loss playing time are under 30, a very hurt Molinia playing instead of wither Whiteside or Posey just makes getting excited for these last couple weeks of games very darn hard for me.

Well
I thankfully did not see that indignity as I gave up early yesterday, but you are correct… that’s like the moronic overmanaging trifecta right there.

NEVER. We were at the HHH Metrodome on Fri when the Twins were playing the Tigers. I can root for the Twins, since they’re in a similar situation as the Giants, but we had to leave before the 9th. The Nathan thing still hurts too much. When Nathan’s in, we hope for blown save.

Insanity is just a state of mind.
Makes sense, I guess.
But I have my doubts that a butcher in LF like Velez, at age 28, will be able to improve so much that he can be adequate in a much more challenging position.
And even if you agree with the logic that a defensively-challenged late-20s LF can somehow improve enough to play CF, why not try it with Lewis? He’s a better hitter than Velez.

but Velez (age 27) actually had more CF experience in the minors than LF. He’s only the LF now because of Rowand.

You get better at playing defese -- by playing defense more often.
Velez has SB potential which Rowand lacks.
still
I really doubt Velez ever gets to Rowands level. he is faster, but if he cant get a good jump it wont matter. If Velez had been in CF today battling the sun, I might have died. I completely trust Rowand out there.

There's little argument about Scott's defense.
However, offensively, he lacks a gimmick. Not enough power, not enough speed, not enough OBP.
I quibble on his Defense. It is not bad. This season he has been solid but I have hard time saying he is well into the “good” cataglory. Considering his glove work and not being Dante Powell are his strongest points, to me, getting excited for Rowand is bit like getting excited for luke warm flat beer.

When I played sports in college and we played Stanford they were always soooo nice… the Cal players? They always came across as stuck-up, whiny, complaining bitches, oh… and poor sports. There’s a difference between being competitive and being an outright asshole. Stanford was always class, UC Berkeley never was.
Going into it I thought it would be the other way around, at least back in the ’80’s it wasn’t. Haven’t liked Berkeley since.
That would be why I dislike Cal.
Although last night was funny, when we did the pregame show. We played the fight song and did the SJS spellout like normal, and the Stanford student section was yelling BORING at us. Then we played Hot and Cold (yes, the Katy Perry song), and the girls in the stand were all YAY :D. The guys went :|

How much more would it have taken to get LaRoche with Sanchez? A line of .356/.429/.638 would look pretty good at first base with this team.
Insanity is just a state of mind.
The Red Sox took Casey Kotchman for LaRoche so they can have a back up first baseman.
Basically, you could have traded Garko or Travis Ishikawa for LaRoche
Garko is under the Giants’ control for three more seasons, while LaRoche is an FA. At the time, that seemed like a good thing. I think Giants’ fans would have been pissed if they traded Scott Barnes for a soon to be FA.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you

Apologies if this was posted in the GDT.
Shawon Dunston doesn’t cheat the game, and he doesn’t let the game cheat him.

Perhaps the most unlikely roadblock for Tribune Co.‘s sale of the team comes in the form of Shawon Dunston, who sent a letter to a federal court objecting to the team being placed in bankruptcy. Seems they promised to pay his tuition if he ever attended college, which he hasn’t and has no plans to.
It was a fairly standard contract clause for high school players in the ‘80s, and it’s just Dunston getting some good financial advice and covering his bases.
“It was just a formality,” Dunston said. “When I signed the contract [in 1982], they said they’d pay for my college tuition if I ever went. It was part of my signing bonus, but I never used it. My adviser asked me about it, and told me to send a letter by the 16th [of September], so that’s what I did. I have nothing against the Cubs.”

Disagree. He’s a lazy plate-blocker, doesn’t throw particularly well and is a human sand dune on the bases.
I don’t think Molina calls that good of a game.
If you don't eat your meat, you can't have any pudding.
I beg to differ , and the pitchers might as well.
Guy , isn’t it subject to how well the pitcher responds to Bengie’s choices/locations?
Although I may have just inadvertently agreed with you , I still maintain that a lot of the success of the pitch depends on the delivery – and not the choice of pitch/location of target. I have to think that if Bengie , who has caught the majority of games , truly stank in his calling then the pitchers would do something about it.

There is no single formula for VORP for hitters, because it depends on how you work out the number of runs a player created, as well as exactly how you choose to define a “replacement player” and what level of performance he would produce. VORP for pitchers is a little easier. Go to Wikipedia.

This is one of those games where you root for something to blow up the stadium or something.
I just figured I'd stay away because being dour adds nothing to the conversation.
But murder — THAT’S NEWS!
… kidding.
I was also struck by this defeatist thought that the Dodgers are a better organization than the Giants… and that depressed the ever loving shit out of me. I really felt like I watched a JV team face off against the red shirts on a Division I team this weekend.
The Giants suck for two months — April and September — and that’s the season…
Questions for Sabean:
1. What can the organization do to prevent itself from giving up at the end of the season next year?
2. What will you do to make the baseball team you are being paid to organize more competitive?
I understand the FILTHY RICH part (zito)
but , sadly , i do not believe.

Tina Fey loses Emmy to Toni Colette? This was a crappy day.
And I love Toni Colette — despite the fact that she runs afoul of the irrational yet eerily good guidance of the two-first-name rule. But she has no business prevailing over Tina Fey. Suck it, nerds.

I’m glad Kristin Chenoweth won. Pushing Daisies was one of my favorite new shows.. so sad it got canned. =(

Did Chenoweth beat out Jane Krawkowski’s portrayal of Janet Jopler on “30 Rock”? Because if so—and no disrespect to Chenoweth—then it’s a miscarriage of justice.

funny story about the staying up
my friends family went out of town and he gave my other friend his keys and let us hang there. We had a mini-party and none of us even lived there.

haha, that is classic, what did they expect with giving your friend the keys to their place? haha, but that’s straight, going to water polo, have fun with that
The guy who gave us the keys is retarded
Hes gave my friend the keys and told him to go have a party in his house when hes not even there. It was the sketchiest thing I have ever done, but it was fun as hell.

GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.
Duly noted
The Chron also had this quote from Boch here:
“I don’t have any comment. I’ve got to find out more. … It’s an unfortunate incident anytime somebody is killed.”
Though to be fair, it’s hard to comment sensibly on something this tragic.
The bummer bookends to a baseball season:
A highly touted prospect killed by a drunk driver (Nick Adenhart, April) and a highly touted prospect accused of murder (Angel Villalona, September).
"If you want to walk, watch a mailman."--Shawon Dunston
"If you want to bunt, bake a cake."--Bruce Bochy
Frankly
I don’t want to know nor think about which is worse, although my gut is leaning towards the first.

Strange
Parts of the original article were edited out. Like:
He [Uribe] cautioned against a rush to judgment with Villalona. “When people know you have money, they do things,” Uribe said.
…and Waldis Joaquin saying (as reported on MLB.com):
Right-hander Waldis Joaquin, a fellow Dominican who played with Villalona at low-Class A Augusta last season, didn’t address his former teammate’s case specifically. But Joaquin pointed out that in his country, people occasionally shoot first and answer questions later if they’re being hassled by a group.
“Maybe if you have five people in one fight, you don’t want to leave, and if you have a gun, you [fire it],” Joaquin said.
Aha
Sorry for all the links. But here’s the more complete version of Baggs’ article:
http://www.mercurynews.com/breaking-news/ci_13382336
The CoCo Times must have edited it for length.
“It’s a shock,” said rookie catcher Buster Posey, who played with Villalona in San Jose. “I don’t know any details. He’s a guy who gets along with pretty much everybody on the team. I enjoyed playing with him, and I think most people would say they did, too.”
Pitcher Waldis Joaquin lived with the same family that hosted Villalona in San Jose. Joaquin received the news via text message from Henry Sosa, another Giants prospect from the Dominican Republic.
“I don’t know what happened,” Joaquin said. “I have no idea.”
Joaquin, 22, said he owns a gun in the Dominican but that it never leaves his house. He said it’s not uncommon for arguments there to escalate into gunfire.
In 2006, Giants infielder Juan Uribe was investigated in the non-fatal shooting of two men in San Cristóbal, Dominican Republic, but an arrest warrant was voided and Uribe said he was the victim of an extortion plot.
He cautioned against a rush to judgment with Villalona.
“When people know you have money, they do things,” Uribe said. “We don’t know what happened.”
Villalona’s host family in San Jose, Ed and Donna Musgrave, described Villalona as shy and reserved but good-natured. They had spoken to him often while he trained in Arizona.
“But once he went back to the Dominican, we hadn’t heard a word from him,” Ed Musgrave said. “We’ve left messages for him and he hasn’t gotten back to us.”
“Right now we’ve just got our fingers crossed that there’s more to this story than what’s come out so far.”
Not defending his actions, but all we know at this point is that he allegedly shot and killed a man. We don’t know his motives and whether it was self-defense or not. As people have said, the DR is a dangerous place to be a relatively well known, ‘rich’ man, so its probably best to let the details come out before rushing to any judgment.

hitters
get rid of the old men, and get some young hot bats in the lineup. the pitching is there, they just need run support all of the time.
Sounds like a broken record
But this is the offseason where we’ll see how committed the Giants are to their ‘youth movement’ per se. Yes, Renteria and Rowand will still be here, but choosing not to re-sign the likes of Bengie and Winn will go a long way. No more dumb veteran presence signings too, we all know how well those have worked out.

I expect neither Randy Johnson nor Rich Aurilia next year. I’m also for ditching Freddie Sanchez so Uribe can play 2B.
Yes , that. And that. And that.
Or was Uribe this year’s Pablo ’08?

I no longer fear hell....
….for I have sat through two crushing losses in a row, in Dodger Stadium, in Orange and Black. I don’t know why I went back today after the game yesterday. It felt like returning to the scene of a crime. Seriously, the most soul draining experience of my life.
Lucky Giants shorts from Target > Jobu
When the season's on the line, this is the line I'm looking for from my #5 hitter:
9/16: 1/4, 1 RBI
9/18: 1/5, 0/1 RISP, 1 K, 2 GIDP
9/20: 0/4, 0/2 RISP, 2 K, 1 GIDP
Total: 2/13, 0/3 RISP, 3 K, 3 GIDP, 1 RBI
That’s what B-Money looks like down the stretch, nerds.
Giants wins feel better than Dodger losses, but it's darn close.

What a day
I was hoping for wins by the Giants, Chargers & D’Backs and for Goofus Jr. to have a good game. (SF Fall Ball)
All three teams lost, but Goofus Jr had a good game (single, HBP, BB, double), but then I hear about Villalona and just had to say Whiskey Tango Foxtrot
"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.
yea, i have to agree with ya on the Chargers, i’m not a fan, but i do have Vincent Jackson on my fantasy team, and damn did he have a good game, kinda wish they woulda thrown it to him on that final drive.
Then there’s your silver lining with Goofus Jr. having a good game, but yea overall a so so day, no hope for the D’Backs to win a game
Bork Insanity, Failure of Consensus
Why is it that I keep hearing and sometimes reading comments to the effect that Bochy “has done a good job” and “he handled the pitching well”? I understand the whole exceed expectations thing, but can any baseball fan who has watched his inane line-ups, double-switch twitch and rambling incoherence not see his incompetence? Molina batting fourth? Winn batting third? Burying Torres, Schierholtz, Freddy, Posey? My disappointment in the last 25 games is exceeded only by the fear that the manager may return, instead of fired ignominously.
I would note a lot of baseball beat writers have lost jobs in the last year or so. I will note there are less Giants beat writers then their uise to be. I would lastly say getting booted from the club house might make it very hard for a beat writer to either keep thier gig or get hired by another paper to do the same gig.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.
