OMG BUSTER CALLED UP OMG
Warchant.com has been informed this morning that former Seminole Buster Posey has been called up to the San Francisco Giants and should be joining the club in Philadelphia this evening for the second game of their series against the Phillies.
After hitting .328 in 34 games last season in four leagues - rookie-level Arizona League, short-season Northwest League, the Class-A California League and Hawaiian Winter League ? Posey hit .326 with 13 home runs, 23 doubles and 58 RBIs in 80 games this season with Class-A San Jose.
Since joining Triple-A Fresno, he had a .310 average with five homers and 20 RBIs in 34 games.

Also, if this is true, it makes me think that Molina might be out longer than expected. The Giants can’t afford to give Whiteside the majority of starts at catcher over this last bit of baseball.
I wonder if that in turn means there is hope Posey could start next year after all
With malice towards the Dodgers
Do the Giants really seem like they know what they are going to do tomorrow?

They were pretty adamant about not bringing him up this year too though. If this rumor is true though and Posey proves he can handle the bat and the pitching staff, that would seem to have to change everyone’s minds

It is strange though
If Molina is injury a lot more serious than previously thought, why would they be wiling to have him catch last night? They pinch hit for Whiteside, so if we somehow tied it at the top of the 9th, Molina would have had to catch the rest of the game.
I was wondering about that. Did they think Garko would catch? (I heard he warmed up one of the pitchers the other night, while Whiteside was getting his gear on after hitting.)

Well, for some unknown reason they’ve given up on that. In any case, he was obviously too injured to catch in last night’s game.
Clearly Sabean is working his way through the recommendations on your spam blog.

The funny part is, on the comments to Baggs’ post-game wrap, some guy said he was at the Fresno game last night and Buster was in the original lineup but was scratched at the last minute. The guy said he actually talked to Buster, who said he might be joining the Giants today.
I thought about posting a fanshot, but considering the dubious source of the information, I decided not to light my credibility on fire like that.
Ah, here it is.

yes
he can be considered an injury replacement
He would have to have been on the roster by 8/31 to be eligible for post-season play.
Why isn't Sabean held accountable for leading the Giants into many years of mediocrity???
But, isn’t Penny eligible even though he signed a minor league contract on 8/31 and didn’t get activated until 9/1?

You have to be in the organization by 8/31 to be eligible for post-season play. You can then use the 60-day DL loophole to get a player on the playoff roster even if they weren’t on the 40 man by 8/31.

Yeah, that’s what I was wondering… if it’d have to be a “season ending” DL placement. Can’t we just put Aurilia back on?
I think it has to be someone who plays the same position as Buster – so like, it would have to be Bengie or Whiteside
But obviously this is getting WAAAAAAY ahead of ourselves

Giants not happy with Molina
The move is prompted by Bengie Molina’s lingering quadriceps strain. He has not started a game since the series in Colorado, and team officials have been sending signals that they are frustrated with Molina’s unwillingness to play through the injury in a pennant race.
I think we can safely say Molina won’t be back. THANK GOD!
also Posey will NOT start tonight
Posey is not expected to start tonight’s game, also Brad Penny’s first start for the Giants. But the Giants felt they had to abandon their plans to wait for 2010 on Posey because of a catcher shortage.
Seriously...

Do they want him to get to know the feel of the bench, the smell of the dugout, etc.?
"The BB's are out. The BB's are being arseholes to me." - Brian Wilson.
Wow
Baggs is really laying it out there as candidly as you will ever see a beat writer put it. Bengie will undoubtedly get his undies in a bunch over this blog post if he hears about it. I love being involved in a playoff race, there is so much more intrigue!
thats from schulman
but they both are saying the same thing
Well, they pretty much have to
They have no backup catcher and Posey’s the guy available who’s most likely to help the team in the playoff race. Moreover, he was obviously going to be added to the 40-man sooner than later anyway (not the case with Holm or Jacks), so it makes sense that way too.
If they’re really that worried about his arb clock (and they’re not planning for him to start next year in the majors), then they could just wait until late June to call him up next year.
LARS WUS RIGHT!!
Ha! I knew he was making the most of that injury. It isn’t about the team for Bengie.

The 40 man is already a mess. A reasonable person would expect them to DFA Aurila (especially after he got a hit last night) but a reasonable person is not Brian Sabean.
They need to create two spots so it’ll be interesting to see what happens. I’m guessing Aurilia and Sadowski get bumped.

I will report on the luster and tint of his halo, should his heavenly visage make any appearances off the bench. And, for that matter, I keenly await a glimpse of Brad Penny’s fatsack. Hey, can you imagine the first Dunston-Posey conversation?

What a season for Runzler. Congrats, man. Getting promoted through five levels is quite an accomplishment.

Man, it’s good Affeldt gets ground balls because his walk rate is almost at 5.

We’re having an insane season with our bullpen. Something like 6 different pitchers are all posting a career-low ERA while drastically over-pitching their peripherals.

THIS IS WHY WE HAVE TO TAKE ADVANTAGE OF IT WHILE WE CAN.
And Romo is under-pitching his peripherals :D? :D?

Your walk rate is 5.

Ok, so can someone explain to me how service time for September call-ups work? Since Posey has to be placed on the 40-man, his clock will be starting, no?
This is the first time in a long while that we’ve had a prospect of this caliber called up in September so I’ve never given much thought to it.
It will. Hopefully, as others have said, they’ll just sign him to a dirt cheap long term deal.
Otherwise, to get that extra year, they’d probably have to keep him in the minors until June, rather than May, next season.

That's awful :(
I spent a couple months out of work this spring… job hunting every single day isn’t fun, but it leaves a lot of time to watch ballgames. Good luck with the search!

He has fallen from “hate your approach at the plate” status to “GTFO” as far as I’m concerned.
I knew that tub of goo was trying to use the team’s wildcard position to try to get the team to offer him a contract.

Also, I called this. SPAMS
I’ve enjoyed watching Eli Whiteside throw out baserunners as much as the next guy. But, if Molina can’t get healthy enough to start the Giants can’t afford to keep starting Whiteside. He’s a career .244/.288/.393 hitter in over 2,500 PA’s in the minor leagues over 9 season. Take a stroll through his minor league work. It’s not a pretty sight. No amount of catcher defense is going to make up for a .250-.270 wOBA hitter.
Reports indicate that the Giants won’t be calling up Posey to the majors but if Molina can’t get healthy, starting Eli Whiteside for more than 2-3 games over the remaining stretch of baseball doesn’t make any sense. Posey has posted a .385 wOBA in AAA already and chances are that he’ll be a league average hitter right now in the majors. Bold decisions are sometimes required to make the playoffs and calling up Posey would indeed be a bold decision.
The Giants won’t do it, but that doesn’t mean they shouldn’t strongly consider it. Molina’s fragile ego would be crushed, but it might need to happen if he can’t get healthy.
I’m excited to see Posey play and I’m a Rockies fans. The hicks on Purple Row cynically mock his pedestrian average in the minors so far, but he’s sabermetrically sound.
How does this affect his contract? His clock starts.. right?
BTW, what does the 34 on your MC logo mean? /newb
.320 is pedestrian?

I haven’t been in front of the TV for any of the awesome Giants moments this season (the no-no, the various walk-off/clutch HRs, etc.). I’m leaving this afternoon for a 5-day backpacking trip, so I fully expect to come back to news that Posey has set an ML record with 13 HRs in his first 5 days in the majors. You can all thank me later.
we should sign his cousins

Hurricane Hazle!
Hear of him? In 1957 the Milwaukee braves brought up a rookie in September and he was so hot he won the pennant for them (and they went on to win the Series too, though he was ineligible). So hey, its happened before – why not now??

That’s sort of the deal breaker here. Logically, this move only makes sense if that is the case
