Post-Game Recap: Giants Mess Themselves

That's all you need to know about this game. Lincecum sent his "embarrass L.A." mojo up to his alma mater today, which he was perfectly justified in doing.
Comment starter: How much money did today's start cost Brad Penny? At least a million, if only because of the hit his once-sparkly National League ERA took.

We're still in this thing!
The Giants are waaaaay too far from the end of the season to really crush us. I predict elimination vs the Cubs.
On the other hand, Jahvid motherfucking Best, bitches.
Giants wins feel better than Dodger losses, but it's darn close.

Wow what a pile of shit that one was. Dodger Stadium was rather unintimidating, the fans around me were lame and had the disposition of a movie theater audience. I’m sure you guys all saw the wave on TV, (was it televised?) so it took quite a few brews to get through this one. I may go again tomorow to see Timmy since I’ll still be in town, I don’t wanna leave on such a bad note. Beat LA. And go D-Bags.

PS
On the bright side I did get to see Posey’s first hit, so there was a silver lining in the blowout.

I was at the game as well – I think most people were at home watching the USC game. Met some good baseball fans (Dodgers and A’s fans oddly enough) and generally had a good time once Bumgarner and Posey played. Now I can tell my children that I saw HOF Buster Posey’s first major-league hit.

even then, Bochy has to say something stupid. When talking about Bumgarner and Posey, Bochy said, “that’s our future, although I can’t tell you when.” Sounds like he thinks they’re a decade away. Posey should be our present, Bumgarner should get a full shot next spring, and Bochy should definitely be only talked about in the past tense.

Bullpen
how would you rank the bullpen in terms of pitchers to be used in a close game?
here’s mine
M. Valdez
J. Martinez
R. Johnson
W. Joaquin
B. Howry
M. Bumgarner
D. Runzler
B. Medders
S. Romo
J. Affeldt
B. Wilson- CL
So the Bottom 7 would be my bullpen right now, with the right to switch Joaquin and Johnson, as i’m sure randy won’t be this bad down the stretch.

my bad.
I guess i counted wrong. Howry/Joaquin/R. Johnson would be fighting it out for the final spot. Bumgarner in short relief could be dominating down the stretch and Runzler has been good in spots

Well the way Johnson pitched today (86-87 mph fastball with minimal control), he should never see any action in a close game; he’d be below Merkin for sure. He’s a legend and all, but he is not a major league pitcher right now.
I’d put Merkin above Joey-Joe-Joe, too. I’d probably put Howry above Runzler, too. Runzler has a couple three-walk innings in him, I’m sure.

I can’t believe that R. Johnson will be THIS bad the rest of the way. Mekin has not pitched like a major league pitcher for over 2 months, holding an ERA over 8 in that stretch. I kinda agree on Howry. It’s easy for me to say “look at this rookie, he great…for a rookie!” and appreciate him more than a vet like howry. Also, It scares me how Howry and Valdez get used in EVERY SINGLE EXTRA INNING FUCKING GAME.

Well I sure in heck don’t want to be defending Merkin Valdez. He’s terrible and should probably be released, assuming that no one would even give up a low-level prospect for him. But if I had no choice right now but Merkin and Randy Johnson, I’d have to go with the pubic wig. At least a 100 mph fastball might get somebody out by accident.
Randy was getting by on guile earlier in the year when he was throwing 89-90. I can’t see him getting major league hitters out with the fastball he was throwing yesterday. Maybe his velocity will come back, or maybe he’s just done.
Also, not to defend Bochy either, but its kind of in the nature of the thing that your worst bullpen arms get used in extra innings. You’ll use your better guys in the 7th, 8th, 9th innings, so if it goes extras, well, the guys you’ve got left are the guys you didn’t feel comfortable using in a tight game in the 8th. On the Giants, that’s Howry and Valdez.
Randy Johnson looked terrible. I think he just didn’t want to end his career on the DL. Then again, every pitcher not named Bumgarner looked terrible today.
No Edgar, it's not your fault, it's the fault of the idiot that plays you
Valdez nearly looked OK.
He should have been out of inning #5 on a GDP, but Sanchez choked.
Don’t forget Joaquin ended the 3rd and worked a clean 4th while strikiing out 2.
Keep the faith!
Haren and Lincecum tomorrow so if you’re a believer to this point, might as well believe it’ll be 2.5 out.
You want to see a walk? Then go watch the mailman.

Ok, so it was some stupid SJ Giants PR call about buying tix for the playoffs, but still.
The Garko trade is already coming back to bite the Giants. The pitcher they gave to the Cleveland Indians, Scott Barnes, tossed five solid innings Saturday night to help Double-A Akron clinch the Eastern League title over the Connecticut Defenders.

question...
before this series would you have been happy to take 2 of 3 in LA?
and
Would you have been happy knowing the rockies went 1 of 3 in Arizona?
I personally was hoping to simply match whatever the rockies did in phoenix… right now, we have a good chance of matching even if Haren loses tomorrow, and a decent shot of gaining some ground.
We aren’t just gonna win 3 in a row while the rockies lose 3 in a row… if we have a shot we got to grind it out and just keep matching what the rockies do… hopefully, some things go our way and when all is said and done it can come down to the wire.

Going into the weekend, I thought it’d be reasonable and necessary to gain a game on the Rockies. If we win tomorrow and they lose, mission accomplished. If we go down 4.5, we’re toast.
Starting Monday the schedule entirely favors...ATLANTA
Marlins (80-69) got it ROUGH — PHI (6), ATL, and NYM.
Rockies (84-65) have next toughest opponents in SD, StL, Mil, and LA.
Giants (80-68) have AZ (6), CHI (4), and SD.
Braves (79-69) get NYM, FLA, and DC (7)!!!!!
If the Rox lose and Braves win tomorrow, ATL will actually be in the better position to catch the Purps in the final weekend.

Truthfully, it was probably as enjoyable as a game can be when the Giants lose by double digits to the Dodgers. All the young guys played, and most of them reached (Rohlinger, Frandsen, Posey, and even Guzman had hits). Bumgarner pitched well. Sure it was an ugly loss, but you can’t really sweat it when it’s 7-1 in the 4th inning. Quick and painless. Of course, I watched it on the DVR and went through most of it at high speed, so that helped.
In 2005, he had an .862 slugging percentage (11 homers, 13 doubles, three triples) and 54 hits after September 1.
"That was stupid, what he was doing," Bochy said. "It was like another Barry Bonds."
NEVER FORGET
I fell asleep during the 5th inning and woke up in time to see Buster check swing ground out and thought, oh great…….But, he got a hit!!

Good News!!!!!!!
From today’s Chronicle in an article discussing what lineup will face LHP
Bochy suggested first baseman Ryan Garko might re-enter the picture because the manager no longer plans to start shortstop Edgar Renteria, who is hampered by injuries to both shoulders and his right elbow. That leaves Juan Uribe as the shortstop and Pablo Sandoval the third baseman.
This made me laugh:
“I talked to Edgar yesterday,” Bochy said. “Edgar is such a warrior. I know the last game was a rough game for him. He’s probably hurting more than he’s letting us know.”
Uh, Boch, he wasn’t keeping it a secret. he talked about it in the papers for chrissakes

As bad as yesterday was, I’m glad I watched till the end. Seeing Posey and MadBum was pretty special.
But it was the right call if you wanted to get a few innings out of your mop up man
"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.
But it was still bizarre. They had Bumgarner warming up already, but then when they double switched, they put Joaquin in. Joaquin’s more of a short reliever; you would think, especially if you were changing pitchers in the third inning, that you’d want to go with Bumgarner, a starting pitcher who could easily go several innings. Why double-switch and then go with a short guy?
I shouldn’t complain. It got Winn out of the game.
