San Jose, the Giants' one affiliate in action, won the first game of the Cal League championship series, with the top individual highlight being (a) Clayton Tanner allowing just 1 ER in 7.0 IP.
AAA: Fresno ended its season on Labor Day
AA: Connecticut had an off-day in its best-of-five championship series
(They trail 2-0 heading into game 3 in Akron tonight.)
A+: San Jose defeated High Desert 2-1
San Jose: RF Roger Kieschnick: 1 for 4, HR
San Jose: CF Francisco Peguero: 2 for 4, SB
San Jose: 1B Josh Mazzola: 2 for 3, HR
High Desert: RF Carlos Peguero: 2 for 4, 2 SO
San Jose: LHP Clayton Tanner: 7.0 IP, 7 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, 9 K--1 WP
San Jose: LHP David Quinowski: 1.0 IP, 2 K
San Jose: RHP Rafael Cova: 1.0 IP
High Desert: RHP Steven Hensley: 7.0 IP, 6 H, 2 R, 2 ER, 0 BB, 7 K--2 HR
Kieschnick and Mazzola led off the 2nd and 5th innings with solo HRs, providing the Giants' only runs. Mazzola and Peguero each had two of the Giants' six hits. For the Mariners' affiliate, their Peguero had their only multi-hit line. He has emerged as one of the better prospects in the Mariners' organization this year after slugging .560.
Tanner had his second straight fairly dominant playoff start. He scattered 7 H over 7.0 IP, allowing just one run. He had a 10/2 GO/FO line. Quinowski and Cova each pitched a perfect inning to finish the game. Hensley, the Mariners' fourth rounder a year ago, came up on the short end of the pitchers duel in one of the most hitter-friendly ballparks in the minors. He had pitched a complete-game shutout in his previous post-season appearance with 3 H, 1 BB, and 10 K.
A-: Augusta ended its season on Labor Day
ssA: Salem-Keizer won the NWL championship series on September 10
R: Giants lost AZL championship game on August 31
DSL: The Gigantes finished their DSL championship series sweep on August 31

Yeah, but they made it to the playoffs and into the final round. I’d be pretty excited if I thought the Giants had a chance to be in the Serious this year, even down 2 games.

Impressive start for Tanner!

Kieschnick...
…does not get a ton of attention around here.He has quietly put together a nice year. I asume he will be in AA next year along with Neal and Ford but one or more could skip to AAA. I also guess that of the three OF in CT this year, only EME has a future. And aside from the guys already on the ML roster, there is not much in terms of OF prospects left in AAA. Timpner looks to have had a pretty bad year. Hrowitz and Copeland were fine. Anyone have any thoughts on how they might structure the OF in AAA and AA next year?
I think they’ll send Neal & Kiesch to AA but try to skip Ford to Fresno, as they did with McBryde, and it will work out about as well as it did with McBryde (i.e., poorly).
EME has no future, none of the AAA outfielders except Bowker has a future.
Why do you think they will try to skip Ford to AAA and not Neal or Roger? Although EME probably doesn’t have a future with this organization, if he is still in it he should be given a shot at AAA. Agree that none of the current AAA outfielders are anything but AAA or AAAA and the jury is still out on Bowker. It would be nice to develop something other than a fringy outfielder – perhaps hope lies in Neal and Roger.
Josh is approaching the 100 RBI club – has 99 – would be nice to have three prospects, if you can call them each a prospect in the club – even though there are those among you that do not value the RBI too highly – it is what helps wins ballgames.
Just totally guessing: Neal, Copeland, McBryde, EME with perhaps Horowitz and/orTimpner as fourth or fifth.
EME can hit, but not so sure about his outfield abilities. Very slow, for one. I know everyone has bad games, but he misplayed a ball in the outfield last night that killed the game for the Defenders.

Subtext game of the week...
As the Defenders force a Game 4, guess who will be on the mound facing them in Game 4?
Scotty Barnes. First postseason start.
That should be interesting.

Akron is stacked with good players, pitchers in particular. I guess they are trying to win that Eastern League Championship that has eluded them for what, the past 3 years? Connecticut used 7 pitchers last night compared to their 4. It was a great idea to bring Madison up to the big club to sit on his “Bum”.
