minor lines, 9/16/09

While one Giants' affiliate won and the other lost its post-season game last night, individual highlights included these two performances: (a) Conor Gillaspie homered while reaching base in all four plate appearances, and (b) Mike McBryde had 3 XBHs and a single.

Star-divide

AAA: Fresno ended its season on Labor Day

AA: Connecticut lost to Akron 7-6
(having now lost the first two games at home)

Connecticut: 2B Brock Bond: 2 for 4, 2B, BB, SO
Connecticut: CF Mike McBryde: 4 for 5, 3B, 2 2B
Connecticut: 1B Brett Pill: 1 for 4, HR, BB, SO
Connecticut: C Jackson Williams: 0 for 4, 2 SO

Connecticut: RHP Daryl Maday: 5.1 IP, 5 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 3 K
Connecticut: LHP Joe Paterson: 1.1 IP, 1 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 K
Connecticut: RHP Mitch Lively: 0.0 IP, 1 BB
Connecticut: LHP Alex Hinshaw: 1.1 IP, 3 H, 1 K
Connecticut: RHP Matt Yourkin: 1.0 IP, 3 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB--1 HR

McBryde had four hits, including three XBHs.  The four hits raised his post-season AVG to a team-leading .423.  With the Defenders' only other multi-hit line, Bond reached base three times.  Pill homered.  Both Bond and Pill have post-season AVGs above .300.  Williams was the only Defender to reach base, but his post-season AVG remains above .260--better than several of his teammates.

Maday allowed three runs in the 3rd inning but otherwise kept the Aeros from scoring.  Paterson, Lively, and Hinshaw combined to allow another run in the 7th inning.  Yourkin allowed 3 ER in the 9th inning to break the tie score (although the Defenders rallied for two runs in the bottom half of the inning to provide the final margin).

A+: San Jose defeated Bakersfield 12-3
(scoring eleven runs in the 7th and 8th innings in the decisive game 5)

San Jose: CF Francisco Peguero: 1 for 3, 2 BB, GiDP
San Jose: LF Thomas Neal: 2 for 5
San Jose: 3B Conor Gillaspie: 3 for 3, HR, BB, IBB
San Jose: SS Brian Bocock: 1 for 3, 2B, BB, SO

San Jose: RHP David Mixon: 6.0 IP, 4 H, 3 R, 3 ER, 1 BB, 6 K
San Jose: LHP David Quinowski: 1.0 IP, 1 BB, 2 K
San Jose: RHP Dan Turpen: 2.0 IP, 1 H

Gillaspie had three hits, including a HR to lead off the 5th inning, which provided the Giants' only run until the 7th inning; and he reached base in all four of his plate appearances.  His .389 AVG led the Giants in this five-game series.  Neal had the Giants' only other multi-hit line, raising his AVG to .250 after an oh-fer in the first two games of the series.  Peguero reached base three times.  Bocock's third double of the series was the Giants' only XBH in the final game asisde from Gillaspie's HR.

Mixon, who had just three starts among his 40 appearances this year, which were an emergency start for Fresno and then starts in his final two games of the year, had a quality start.  He also struck out more batters than he allowed to reach base.  Quinowski and Turpen finished the game with 3.0 scoreless IP to secure the win.

A-: Augusta ended its season on Labor Day

ssA: Salem-Keizer won the NWL championship series on September 10

R: Giants lost AZL championship game on August 31

DSL: The Gigantes finished their DSL championship series sweep on August 31

At least one group of Giants are still in this thing!

Watched the little Giants play in Bakersfield for a few innings on Tuesday. Peguero appears to have a nice easy swing, although he holds his bat behind his head and almost parallel to the ground before beginning his swing. Josh Mazzola is another large youngster and it will be interesting to see how they do in San Jose next year. One of Nicholson’s main problems was the he walked the leadoff batter three times and each time the batter scored. Couldn’t tell from my angle if the umpire was squeezing the plate or if he just didn’t have any command.

Looks like Pill has taken over the organizational lead in RBI’s as Roger has not done much in the playoffs – although there is another series for San Jose and Connecticut needs to start winning to stay alive.

When you have as many RBI’s as Pill and Roger do, they aren’t going to see anything they can hit when there are runners on base. They will pitch around them or even allow them to draw a walk rather than take that chance. Pill’s home run was with no one on base – finally got a pitch he could drive. I’m sure they are doing the same to Roger. The problem is that in playoffs especially, it’s hard to be patient at the plate because you want to help your team win. I’m not too optimistic about Connecticut’s chances – Akron is stacked with great pitching. Makes me wonder why the Indians haven’t brought any of them up.

That’s why one of the great sports cliches is that you have to stay within yourself. You can’t get caught up trying to do it all once the playoffs come along and get outside your game. I always thought Steve Young had that problem in the playoffs, his turnover ratio goes from historically low to historically high when you move from regular season to the playoffs. Classic not staying within yourself.

My Bucardo is better than yours.

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.

Have always felt “staying within yourself” was a crucial part of any game. It applies to hitters as well pitchers. You see pitchers go off their game all the time trying to do too much.

I host ballplayers every year here in Salem/Keizer and the ones I’ve claimed have all stayed with me full time during their time here. I’m sometimes tempted to claim some that were transients in my house including your adopted son as well as Timmy, LaTorre, Downs, Salsgiver, Felmy, Clark, and several others that are not coming to mind right now. However, I’m sticking with those that were officially mine for now.

They are supposed to pay for food but I have never been real big on charging them.

San Jose

All series the SJ hitters have been swinging at everything, almost as if they’re pressing. Kieschnick swung at almost every single pitch thrown to him last night. Hopefully the offense kicks it into the gear in High Desert tonight.

That must have been some meltdown last night in Bakersfield. Looking at the game recap, the Giants, down 4-1 in the 7th inning of the deciding game, proceeded to score 3 runs either on or because of 4 Wild pitches. Then in the 8th they scored the go ahead run on a 5th wild pitch and yet another of the many put away runs on a 6th wild pitch later in the 8th.

I do remember two different times in Giants history when they lost games on two consecutive wild pitches, but 5 runs scoring on 6 wild pitches in the late innings of a deciding game in the playoffs is really beyond anything I’ve ever seen. The home crowd must have been thrilled! Wish we could get an eyewitness report.

On no it was in SJ, of course. Maybe we DO have an eyewitness report here! Anybody present for the wilding?
