The return of Barry? Says ESPN...
I already know much ink has been spilled on the McCC over whether or not to bring back Barry. So I just thought I'd bring it up one more time since it seems relevant with this article being published today in ESPN Page 2.
http://sports.espn.go.com/espn/page2/story?page=caple/090916_offbase&sportCat=mlb
The only compelling argument Caple has is: "If the Dodgers can sign Manny Ramirez, the Yankees can have A-Rod and Andy Pettitte and the Red Sox use Big Papi, the Giants shouldn't feel bad about bringing back Barry." This is weak at best (a la 3rd grade playground banter - "he's cheating so I should be able to too.") Even though I grew up idolizing Barry and still sport his jersey to games sometimes, I've been more than happy turning a new leaf these past couple years and leaving the Barry-roid era in the past. In honesty, I think this article was written for all those fans that are missing some good competition and excitement in their division. While out here in the NL West I feel like every game has been for a berth in the playoffs since the All-Star break. Barry I love you, but I don't miss you.
Giants loyalists thoughts?

Not going to happen.
Also just in the hypothetical situation where the Giants would do it, Bonds hasn’t played in a major league game in over 2 years and he’s 45 now and has recently had hip surgery within the past year and a half. And did I mention he hasn’t played a game in over 2 years? It would be one thing if he was pulling a Rickey Henderson and still playing Indy ball, but he’s not. Even though he would still reach base a lot via the walk, there is no way that a team would logically play a guy this old in must win games without knowing if he still has the bat speed, foot speed, and health to play 9 innings out in the outfield and contribute at the plate. It’s just stupid.
I love Barry as much as the next person and miss watching him play, but he’s not coming back. Move on and be happy we have young studs like Lincecum and Pablo around.

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA
I saw Bonds in 06 in seattle. His top speed then made snails everywhere feel better about their own shortcomings. Add two years of no conditioning to that, and you’ll have the longest full-speed home run trot ever.

I think maybe the point was not giving permission to the Giants, but that now that so many known PED users are employed by other teams, it would be much more difficult for Bonds to be singled out as he was before.
In 2007, it was easy to pick on Bonds at the time because all the other high profile guys (Sosa, Canseco, McGwire, Caminiti, Palmiero) were out of the game. Now that guys like Manny, Ortiz and all the other fun bunchers from the Mitchell report have been exposed, it’s a different story.

My two cents...
Would Barry still instill fear in most pitchers in the majors? YES
Would he play better left field than Lewis, Velez or Winn? PROBABLY
Would he fill more seats at any venue he played in? YE$
Would his intentional walks turn into more runs for the Giants, especially in later innings where he could be replaced with a speedy pinch runner? YES
Why not bring him back—he’s gonna be more of an help than Aurilia has been this year!!

I’m going to say that there’s no way in hell he plays better defense than Lewis, much less Winn. Lewis is no golden god of the glove, but he can at least run, which I’m guessing is more than Barry can do these days.
I don’t think he would feared by a lot of pitchers at this point in his career, if he came back. I have a feeling he would get pitched to a lot at first and forced to prove he deserves some IBB. The question, then, is if he can still hit the ball? My guess is that we’d see a decline, but he’d still be our best PH option, which is really the only role I’d want from him at this point. I don’t need him limping around left field in a close playoff game.

Fielding percentages...
Look at his Barry’s fielding stats compared to Lewis.
In his last full season in 2007, Barry played LF in 110 games and had 4 errors to finish with a .976 fielding percentage (lifetime in OF, Barry sports a .985 Fpct); in Fred Lewis 2008 season, he played LF in 112 games and committed 6 errors winding up with a .969 Fpct.
On the offense comparisons Lewis went 9HR, 40 RBI, 51 walks and batted .282 in 2008;
Barry had 28HR, 66 RBI, 132 walks and a .276 BA in 2007.
I find it kind of funny that you are concerned about Barry’s ability to run on a team that already has Molina, Sandoval, Aaron Rowand, Juan Uribe and Ryan Garko on it…Barry had 5 SB’s in 2007…Lewis only has 8 this year in 109 games.

I obviously agree, but I will point out in Barry’s case his fielding percentage does reflect what he does on D – that is, play very fundamental defense even if he has no range anymore. Great routes to balls, great footwork, quickly gets the ball in despite a weak arm, good first step, doesn’t drop the ball (fielding percentage!)…

I LOVE Barry, and I can’t believe he wasn’t with the team the last couple years. No doubt Barry can still hit, if not at past levels, but his defense was pretty bad at the end and it’s not going to be any better.
Fielding % is a terrible stat that fails to measure range. Just discard it and look at some UZR numbers at fangraphs.com.

Apparently you’ve never seen Adam Dunn play? Jack Cust? LF is actually one of the worst positions in baseball when it comes to defensive ability, it isn’t too hard for someone with Lewis’ athleticism to actually be decent even if he has issues that look so obvious to an observer.

No more Barry for Giants....Unless we could use him as a hitting coach?
Ah the ole" Bring back Barry!’ song….NOoooooo! I loved Barry and had MANY happy moments watching him play for the Giants….BUT! He is too old, he has not played in over two years, and I believe that he is physically too challanged to play in the outfield. AND he would want TOO much money for too little production. Let the man go off into retirement. I think that Barry would be good as a DH in the American League where he would not have to take to the field.

I always thought Barry could be an incredible threat off the bench. Just watching him pick up a helmet in the dugout every time his team got 2 or more base runners could cause opposing managers to lose it and do crazy things.
So, $10 mill year for a pinch hitter? That’s far better than Renteria’s contract at any rate.

Bring Barry back and let him PH. The Dodgers found it appropriate to trade for Thome, when he’s only going to PH, and I’d say after last night I’d like a fearsome hitter. Can Bonds still play? Probably. He won’t jump into a game immediately, but the guy played for more than 20 years. I get the feeling those skills don’t just go away. Pay him $50,000, or whatever the minimum is, with incentives (a contract I imagine he’d take), and just let him PH.
There’s another really huge reason to bring him back. Barry’s a few hits away from 3,000 (though he wouldn’t get there this season only pinch hitting) and four RBI away from 2,000. Meaningless milestones yes, but wouldn’t it be nice to have those reached? Bonds is obviously one of the five best players ever, and I’d like to see those numbers, which are so close, achieved.

I still say first base
It’s pretty clear that Barry’s become a LF liability and the Giants need a better stick at first… especially a short-term good one. While I certainly was against moving him there while he was still playing, it seems to me that while he’s NOT playing it would be to his advantage to figure out if he could learn the position well enough. Whatever problem he had with his knees has had two years to rest now.
The fact that he isn’t trying strikes me as a pretty clear indication that he wants back into baseball on his own terms, which doesn’t bode well for a “Once divisive force comes back to his old team, re-invented as a cuddly teddy bear team guy” storyline.
