That felt good.
Lets keep molina renteria and rowand out of the lineup more often.
I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
Monday's lineup
LF Velez
2b Sanchez
1B Sandoval
C Molina
RF Winn
SS Renteria
3B Uribe
CF Rowand
P Lincecum
Obviously any links in the above post are probably NSFW
sad but true
want this lineup:
LF Lewis/Velez
2B Sanchez
RF Schierholtz
3B Sandoval
1B Garko/Ishikawa
SS Uribe
C Posey
CF Rowand
Brand new adoptive daddy for the Big Unit. Congrats go out to my son for his 300th win. Only 211 more wins until he catches Cy Young!

Not really feelin' the Nate hitting third.
And I don’t know if Gark and Ishi hit in the same spot regardless.
But other than that, yeah.
Giants wins feel better than Dodger losses, but it's darn close.

yeah. If Garko is in the lineup, then maybe the 3-5 hitters are Sandoval/Garko/Schierholtz

FWIW, If molina were in that lineup, he would bat in the same spot as posey, IMO

I would bat Pablo 2nd to keep him out of a lot of RISP situations where he clearly doesn’t thrive. He is more of a table setter at least now-a-days.
table setter for who?

look, sandoval is the best hitter the Giants have and is leading them in RBI. Granted, RBI does not tell the whole story, but he is most valuble to the Giants in the middle of the lineup. Uribe would be a better cleanup option than Molina, but putting Sandoval as a 2 hitter makes little sense.

So, you think his ability as an RBI man overshadow his ability to get on base and so you bat him later in the line-up—thus giving him less at bats? Explain to me that logic?
I don’t see him as a money hitter in RISP situations because of his complete lack of patience. Pitchers know it and take advantage of him. You see it almost every game—especially lately, and that is what counts right now.
Pablo is the best hitter on the team. The best hitter on the team bats third or fourth. That’s the only thing Bochy has right and you want him to change it?
proud father of Edgar (Grandslam) Renteria
Pablo does not have a complete lack of patience. In terms of IsoOBP, Pablo is among the best on the Giants for players who play every day. Pablo has an IsoOBP of .055, which is just below Edgar Renteria and Aaron Rowand for the team lead. It is better than Juan Uribe (.039), Nate Schierholtz (.032), Bengie Molina (.019), Randy Winn (.052), as well as Ryan Garko and Freddy Sanchez, though those stats are SSS in terms of time on the Giants. There are more patient hitters on the Bench in Travis Ishikawa, Fred Lewis and Andres Torres. Pablo is not great in terms of OBP, but he is far from a free swinger in terms of results.
Proud adoptive daddy for the Big Unit, who is currently teaching Madison Bumgarner the art of being intimidating.
by Speedforthewin on Sep 13, 2009 5:22 PM PDT up reply actions
Well maybe when he passes Renteria and Scott in terms of IsoOBP, you’ll have a point. Uribe got off to a slow start but is coming on strong when it appears that Pablo is fading fast. You saw it today when Pablo comes up with RISP, he fails miserably almost automatically, and this is nothing new lately. Take the runners out of scoring position and he hits fine. It has nothing to do with your liking the guy or not, (I’m a lifelong Giants fan going back to the 60’s, I want him to do well as everyone else does) but it has to do with placing him in a position where he can succeed. Play to his strengths.
Pablo is the last hitter to be worrying about with this team.

Don’t worry, Bochy will bat him where you want-4th, probably the rest of the year so we can see if your arguement holds water by the results.
He is our best hitter and I say bat him where he will be the most productive, not where you wish he was the most productive. I say bat him 2nd or 3rd and no lower.
When did I say that I want to bat him fourth?
I want him to bat 3rd.

I’m fine with 3rd. I think we all are. It’s the idea of batting Pablo 2nd that has us talking

Didn’t Bill James, or Nate Silver, or someone like that conclude that the best hitter on the team should bat second?
Giants wins feel better than Dodger losses, but it's darn close.
by WhereThere'sAWillieThere'sAMays on Sep 13, 2009 7:58 PM PDT up reply actions
I think it probably depends a lot on the relative strengths of teammates. If you have one good hitter on your team and the rest of the team is the same (garbage), it’s probably best to bat them leadoff. But if you have some guys who get on base OK but have no power, they should bat first and second and then you put your slugger 3rd. At least that’s what the stuff I’ve read has said.
Thing C
if you run the lineup simulators
with various combinations of 2009 Giants, you always get Pablo batting 2nd as the best 10 or 20.

Good info. I guess the reason for batting 2nd instead of first is because the pitcher is usually such a terrible batter. Having him hit leadoff drastically reduces the number of guys who will be on base when he comes to the plate.
In the AL, I wonder if it would come out any differently? (Pretend Bowker or Lewis is the DH.)
Thing C
no the lineup simulators
actually often bat the pitcher 8th or even 6th!
I think that there is no lineup position where you can expect to have 2 men on base
a significant proportion of the time, so if you put your best OBP guy first and best OPS guys 2nd,
he will get the most PAs, and most PAs with 1 person on base.
Maybe if you had 3-4 guys with .400 OBPs then 3rd would be best…

Pablo overall: .322/.377/.541

Slightly worse, but still the guy I want at bat.

It’s pointless to argue that Pablo should be batting anywhere but 3rd or 4th in this lineup. I’d call your assertion that he he’s fading down the stretch to have some validity as this is probably the most he’s ever played in his cacareer and he’s no doubt tired, but to say he’s merely a table setter is absurd, especially when you look at who else Bochy has as alternatives.

FUCK BOCHY
I didn’t read the game threads at the end of the game, but was anyone else going crazy when Bochy sent up Aurilia with all those kids on the bench? Is he fucking kidding? Give us fans something, you stupid big headed bastard!! There was absolutely no reason he couldn’t give Posey an at bat there, or even Bowker, Frandsen, Guzman etc. Is he doing this to spite the fans? This could actually get ugly. If the Giants’ keep losing I could see Molina and other vets getting booed, and chants for Posey. I can also expect to hear “Bruce must go” chants. Bochy is literally giving a big FU to all the Giants’ fans that are paying good money to see the game.

I understand the frustration. In Bochy’s eyes, this team is contending for a playoff spot and Aurilia could be needed in a PH situation later on with the game on the line, so he decided to get him an AB to keep him fresh. Should he have put in Posey or Bowker? yes, but maybe as defensive replacements in the 7th. I guess what i’m saying is I understand the reasoning behind putting Aurilia in and I didn’t expect anything different to happen.

There is no excuse to give Rich an at-bat is this game. Well…. maybe if it is the 18th inning and everyone else has already been used…then, ok.
If you don’t want to use Guzman… fine, I guess. But to not use Guzman or Posey is mind-boggling.
Give us fans something, you stupid big headed bastard!!

LIke others have said, Penny should be part
of the picture next year. I agree that he’d like the chance to stick it to the Dodgers several times a year, but at what cost?
Some of you have said you’d go for a 1 or 2-year deal, but at his age, it’s likely Penny would hold out for a 2 or 3-year deal just for the security. At that length, he’d have one more good contract in him. So after seeing how solid he could be every fifth day, and knowing how well he could solidify this rotation for 1-2 years while MadBum gets ready and we burn some more years off of Zito’s deal, the questions are:
1. How much and for how long with Penny; and
2. If they locked up Penny for say 2 or 3 years, would you move Sanchez for a bat?
Responsible for the last great homegrown Giants team.
I wouldn't sign penny for 3 years
At most, I would sign penny to a one year, incentive-laden deal with a 2nd year option that vests at an inning threshold. Penny made 5 mil this year if I remember correctly. If he keeps pitching like this the rest of the season, it may take that salary to resign him again. And because I wouldn’t sign penny for 3 years, I wouldn’t trade jonathan sanchez. It’s part of the Sanchez corollary.
