Off-Day Fun?

I'm creating this mostly because I want to push those Rockies fanposts down so I can stop having to read the word "Rockies" every time I look over to the right-hand sidebar, but also because it's an off day. You could even say mostly because it's an off day. Or, you could have if you hadn't read my first sentence, anyway.

Star-divide

So yes, a good old off-day, off-topic thread about something. You might remember my off-topic threads from such classics as "Massively Failed Thread That Nobody Cared About," "howtheyscored Shows off His Glasses," "howtheyscored Shows off His Cat," "Psychotic howtheyscored Goes Nuts on chilebean (?) - Others Watch," and "Pet Peeves." Today's edition is simple: "Fun."

When you're not huddled in a Snuggie(TM) waiting for somebody to comment in one of these threads so that you can say something smart back at them, or living and dying by the Giants, what do you (or what would you like to) do for fun?

I have a lot of really kind of common things that I could list off, like watching movies or reading or eating (you know, our usual OT stuff), but I've been thinking more about things that I want to (and will) do for fun lately.

The one thing I've been really wanting to do lately is to go down to San Jose and take on the Hellfire Hotwing Challenge at SmokEaters. Yes, I saw it on Man Vs. Food, and I want a T-shirt darnit. I'll actually be doing this pretty soon. Within about a month if my plans don't fall through.

So what do you jerks do for fun? Or what are you looking forward to doing for fun?

This FanPost is reader-generated, and it does not necessarily reflect the views of McCovey Chronicles. If the author uses filler to achieve the minimum word requirement, a moderator may edit the FanPost for his or her own amusement.

Mostly, I play either the guitar or bass. I feel bad if I don’t pick up one or the other at least once a day.

Occasionally, I will play video games.

I nerd out on various human space flight related websites just because the future for HSF beyond low Earth orbit is completely dismal.

Since working on my scheme to conquer the Earth is not really “fun”, I won’t include it here.

I’ve been learning guitar for a little over a year and bass since January. It’s been an incredibly rewarding experience so far but I’ve had to back off on practicing recently. I’ve developed some kind of tendinitis in my wrist and elbow from the combination of working on a computer all day, lifting and playing basketball, and playing music.

It’s one of those things where once you learn and master the rules of grammar, you have more license to modify them for stylistic purposes. In that case, it may be appropriate stylistically to begin a sentence with “But”.

Nooooooooooooo! As a fellow B.A. in English, I want to remind everybody that the study of English is NOT the study of language! It’s the study of literature! If it was the study of language, then I would have had to proofread my essays to get all those A’s.

Ah, but it’s both. There’s the whole matter of usage – the art of stringing together words and such.

And the beauty of it is that you get to apply this wonderful usage to analysis of the literature. Putting
the two parts together is a thing of beauty.

If you got A’s without proofreading your essays, you cheated the system!

I dabbled in linguistics in a course on natural language processing I took a billion years ago. The one thing I remember from it: why do we say “little red fire truck” and not “red little fire truck”? It blew my mind.

by non sequitur on Sep 10, 2009 10:49 PM PDT up reply actions

I had a course in linguistics at Sac State a few years ago and was fascinated by phonemics (both within and between languages). I work with English language learners so the subject was very relevant.

by Merope on Sep 10, 2009 10:57 PM PDT up reply actions

I should take a formal course along these lines sometime. Over the last 15 years I think I’ve had an informal second career proofreading for highly-educated ESLs who know enough to ask pressing questions about English grammar.

by non sequitur on Sep 10, 2009 11:06 PM PDT up reply actions

Look around for colleges that offer credentialing or certification in TESOL. CSUS does. I took an English grammar class alongside the linguistics one, didn’t enjoy it as much though.

I’ve got all the units I need to teach ESL Adult School type classes, but now most of those programs have been budget cut.

by non sequitur on Sep 10, 2009 11:15 PM PDT up reply actions

I completely agree.

Grammar, usage, and word choice (do people still call that “diction”?) are either included in good lit study or acquired through it. I agree with you on this. (And for being a grammar stickler, I have surprisingly little opposition to starting a sentence with “but.” But that’s a different discussion.)

by howtheyscored on Sep 11, 2009 8:24 AM PDT up reply actions

Honestly, though, I probably get this wrong about half the time, still. I’m working on it.

And I am overstating my point. There was a time not long ago where the study of English required a ore than rudimentary knowledge of Latin. It’s only recently that the study has shifted so far away from the “fundamentals” (to go all basebally on this). And I don’t necessarily have a problem with it. I think that an English lit class should be about the literature. Any lessons that a student gets on grammar and usage should be by conduction (er… I mean, by being in “contact” with the material that uses the language so expertly).

And I mean that for the University level. They REALLY should be taking care of this language stuff before you ever get there.

Context, people. More context is good. Less context is bad. If you're willing to be reductive, then you're willing to be wrong.

It depends, actually. From Webster’s Third New International Dictionary:

But when a logical or exact distinction is desired in specialized work in which clarity is more important than usual (as in this dictionary), a period or comma can be placed outside quotation marks when it belongs not in the quoted matter but to a larger unit containing the quoted matter. The package is labeled “Handle with Care”.

The reference to “but” in the preceding post would fall into this exception.

Perspective

All of this grammar stuff may be dependent upon how a person views this medium. Personally, I view the internet as an oral conversation: I tend to type the way I would normally speak. People I work with always say that about my emails, “I could hear you saying that.”

Other people consider the internet literary and use more literary type language or “book speak” to make their points.

Movies, TV, eating, reading, yada yada yada.

One thing I did for fun recently was the Power Hour challenge with my friend. If you haven’t heard of it, basically you take a shot of beer on the minute mark for an hour. One of my oft-drunk friends had tried it and said he couldn’t make it, so I thought I’d give it a shot (pun unintended, actually). I had also never been drunk before so I wanted to see what my limit was.

Well, one hour and seven beers later, I wasn’t even drunk. It was actually quite easy, albeit I had to piss like a racehorse.

Oh, and on a completely unrelated note, I’ve also eaten 6 saltines in one minute, which according to the food network was impossible.

My husband did the hellfire challenge back when the place was Cluck U. Apparently the hardest part is the 5 minute afterburn. And, of course, no napkins. Bring a scoop of peanut butter and a carton of milk to cool down after you finish the challenge – water won’t do shit (the fats in the PB and the lactose in the milk help neutralize the hot pepper burn – it’s science!).

So good luck!

Anise is awesome in it’s proper role.

It shouldn’t be used in desserts. And I will shame my heritage by adding that it kinda sucks as an alcohol flavoring too. (Though I find Ouzo combines well with coffee).

Because it’s so strong, it needs a complimenting, yet equally strong flavor. It’s best uses are as an addition to spicy dishes, like in italian sausage or this dish.

I like video games and cooking. That’s really general, so I’ll say POGEYMANS! I got a Ratatouille cookbook from Disneyland last weekend and can’t wait to try the recipes. One is for chocolate bouchons (little chocolate baked desserts) by Thomas Keller, owner and proprietor of the French Laundry.

Geez between working, going to school, and the irritating team which shall not be mentioned today… there really isn’t a lot of time left over for anything else.

We like to go hiking. I used to play soccer before old age and health problems set in. I like to garden, bake cookies, throw toys at the cat, and lately I’ve been coloring mandalas to help me relax in the evenings, Zarquon knows my sports teams aren’t helping me any.

I went to see Gary Allan in concert last night from the front row. He’s a country singer, but he totally rocks. Also, he and his band were drinking Jack Daniels out of the bottle while performing, and the slide guitar player’s favorite trick is playing his instrument with the Jack bottle.

I also like to country line dance. Weird, I know, but I’m really good at it. Maybe Brad Penny would like to join me sometime. I understand that he often rocks cowboy boots.

In addition to being a fantastic dancer and hardcore baseball fan, I am into photography and girlie pursuits like shopping, getting my nails done and watching trashy reality TV.

I knew a few dudes who did it. They documented the challenge on video, and one guy ended up ralphing in the parking lot after he chugged a half gallon of milk.

I really enjoy Comedy clubs. Usually about once a month, the wife and I visit this club in Pasadena (BTW, very fun city). Mrs. GaA is in school currently so this gives me plenty of time to do everything Giants. Though I fear this will change next year when she graduates.

I was in a band that used to regularly play the Ice House back in the 80’s.

Also, I saw Jerry Seinfeld do a set there before he was a TV star.

Nice. They also do a comedy version of traffic school for traffic tickets. When you walk around in there they have signed pictures of famous comedians who’ve passed through throughout the years. Seinfeld is one of them. THe most recent one I saw was Joe Rogan, he was meh

No. Though I really wanted to this year. I go to quite a few LB Dirtbag games (even though they were pretty shitty this year).

I think I might want to next year. Perhaps we can have a McCoven “east of LA” encounter or something…..

I’ve never had a bad time taking in a show at a comedy club. Even if the comics are “meh” it’s still pretty fun with the right people. I should go more often.

by chilibean_3 on Sep 10, 2009 9:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Yup, lots of fun..though it can get pretty expensive with the fees for the seats and the 2 drink minimum (which usually turns into about 4 or 5)

I shouldn’t have been airing my dirty laundry there anyway. I opened the thread for the sake of hearing people remember their own lives fondly, and not to talk about my own. I said some pretty stupid things, myself.

I play guitar poorly, play video games, take in shows at The Boardwalk and participate in motorsports events. Along with the normal sports/movies/cooking and whatever. Been doing a lot less of all of those as I try to build up a wad of cash.

None right now as I sold off the car for wad o’ cash. Before that it was mainly rally-x stuff while doing a stage rally build. Now I’m just turning wrenches/management for a friend on his STI build and helping organize an event or two. You can also find me spectating at many a track in the valley.

Video games mostly, I have a PS3 I love it. I’m playing Oblivion right now and trying to master all guild quests. I am a full vampire right now and trying to fix that (on Oblivion, although how cool would that be if I was a real vampire?). My wife and I just found out that we will be having our first child in May so that is exiting, been trying for 2.5 years so it felt like it was about time so I am commiting most free time to looking at baby furniture and maternity clothes with the little lady.

Oh man, I love Oblivion. Once I picked up CoD, though I shelved it. I was close to the end – I should totally pick that up again. Getting un-vamped is a pain in the ass.

I like playing PC games. I also enjoy reading fantasy novels, seinen manga (I will admit that I occassionally venture into the realm of shounen, but not often I swear) and IT whitepapers (lol nerd).

I recently built a new desktop too so I’m going to be spending the next few weeks tuning it.

Still in despair.

Hey, there’s nothing wrong with shounen. Shoujo on the other hand…

I know you nerds know NOTHING about the real game of baseball, or any other athletic endeavor requiring teamwork under physical stress.

I bbq, swim, read, watch movies, listen to music, watch some tv shows (just got into Mad Men!), drink, smoke cigars, and most importantly spend time with the family.

Oh yeah, porn.
