Silver lining department:
I think Bochy may finally have found the worst lineup possible with this roster.
Which means it can only get better!

He'd have to replace either Garko or Rohlinger in today's lineup...
…based on current performance, I’d call that a push.

yep. If a lefty’s pitching, Aurilia is a better bet than half of the stiffs they put out there last night. Aurilia is a better bet to get a hit than against a lefty than Winn, Rowand, Roehlinger, Whiteside and Velez. Renteria and Garko are the only ones clearly better, and even though Uribe might be better than Richie now, Aurilia would have better at bats.

Nah, his hit was a ground ball (sharply hit, though) down the line. But actually I’d say the ball Uribe hit right after Garko’s double was a line drive, just unfortunately hit right at Werth in right.

more than frustrating
its killing them. Winn had a shot with a runner on second in the second. Did you have any belief he’d come through. He has lost his ability to hit right handed. it is not only the below .160 average in 123 ab’s. Its the THREE extra base hits total. Three. That is flipping amazing. He has not squared up a boll right handed in a couple months. Weak pop outs and two hoppers to short. That is it.
But he’s a veteran and we know his track record and hes a streak hitter blah blah blah blah blah .

Yeah, um, he’s had over 100 ABs against LHP, putting up a robust .390 OPS. I think it’s been obvious for a good while that he is absolutely useless as a RHH. It’s just total malpractice to start him against a lefty.
by taliesin on Sep 1, 2009 8:53 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
It does really make no sense though. As a natural righty, you’d expect for his lefty side hitting to go south before his righty side hitting.

Yeah, it is strange
He’s more consistent as a LHH, though. If you look at his splits, as a LHH the last four years his OPS has been .745, .736, .781, and .769. As a right hander, .654, .934, .813, and the cliff dive this year to .390. Whatever the reason, as a lefty he’s dead solid average, while as a righty he’s been everything from great to execrable.
In any case, he should not face a LHP again this season. Let him try again next year in spring training. With his new team.

I’ve been stubborn about this, and I still think Winn’s struggles against lefties this year could be 100% fluke, but at this point I give up. The starting outfield against lefties should be Torres/Rowand/Schierholtz.

Comment on the game recap on MLB.com:
With Dodgers getting Thome and Rockies getting Giambi, the Giants should have gone after Dye. We all know how difficult it is to get close to getting in the playoffs after 162 games. When a team does get close, you need to fill the holes and give it 150%. Last night with the trading deadline it was the time to pull the trigger…if not last night then when?!! There is not guarantee we will get this close again in the next few years so now is the time and the Giants do nothing. If money was a problem, the MLB should do what the NFL does, get Zito to re-nogotiate so that we could free up the necessary money for Dye…but no players union too strong to agree to that!
That’s right, in the several hours that Dye was available before the playoff roster deadline, the Giants should’ve renegotiated a $126M contract so they could add a .262 / .342 / .478 hitter.

I’m actually kind of surprised the Giants didn’t go after Dye, considering they reportedly put in a waiver claim on Gary Sheffield. Dye is like Sheffield without the drama.
To make it clear, I didn’t want much to do with either of them.

Sheff’s actually been one of the few positives for the Mets this year, even considering his perpetually fragile hamstrings and that one hissy fit where he walked out of the stadium. He’s mostly kept his head down and been a good teammate, and I can’t really blame him for clashing with those douches in the Mets’ front office.
You know your year is fucked when your LOLold low-grade Milton Bradley of a 4th OF is leading the team in HRs.

Just got home and read the recap.
Not that it was actually a debate, but something tells me choosing grad school over listening to this game was the right move.
Was everyone’s favorite part of the game that the lone run was scored by The All-Star?
Or was it the way the hitters made Hamels work for every out?
Sigh.

Well, it was possibly the most pitiful performance by the Giants’ offense all year, which is really saying something. But it wasn’t all that painful, except for the Torres pickoff. Once the Phillies scored, I really felt like it was 5-0. It was like getting blown out; not actually excruciating, just boring and irritating.

Got picked off trying to steal and was barely thrown out at 2nd. I believe it was a 1-2 count (?) which is definitely not a H&R count. So really there is no excuse for that.

I mean that since it was probably a straight steal it is more acceptable (but not by much). I guess they had a read that they can run on first movement as he may have the tendency to be a “book lefty”. Though that read would have had to have come from a previous game as there was only 1 baserunner prior.
The H&R comment shouldn’t be in there as the runner can wait even longer before breaking to 2nd.

But why would he be trying to steal with the best hitter on the team at bat, a guy who hits for power. It makes no sense.
by taliesin on Sep 1, 2009 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
WOuldn’t a base hit score a run then in that situation especially with a speedy runner at 2nd?
by PiKAgiant on Sep 1, 2009 10:24 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think the increased probability of scoring if he makes it is enough to compensate for the reduced probability of scoring if he doesn’t. Certainly the chances of scoring multiple runs are reduced by the steal attempt. Not sure about the chances of scoring one.
by taliesin on Sep 1, 2009 10:30 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
yea i see what you’re saying, with Pablo up, and then Molina up next, there would be a higher probability of contact, and a ball in the gap
by PiKAgiant on Sep 1, 2009 10:38 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Certainly the chances of scoring multiple runs are reduced by the steal attempt.
I don’t know about that. If Torres makes it to second, the intentional walk to Pablo is automatic, and now you have two runners on and nobody out.
by Evan on Sep 2, 2009 6:59 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
If he makes it
But there’s also a 25-30% chance he doesn’t make it. So it’s the chance of runner on 2nd, nobody out vs none on, 1 out. And, as you say, the steal likely takes the bat out of Pablo’s hands, and no other Giants hitter has close to the same chance of hitting a HR as he does.
by taliesin on Sep 2, 2009 7:33 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure, but your chances of getting two runs are substantially greater with Torres on second than on with him on first, so maybe Bochy was playing for the win rather than the tie. (Which seems dumb, since our bullpen is better than the Phillies’s, but whatever.)
by Evan on Sep 2, 2009 7:47 AM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I agree. I don’t like the steal in that situation. When I said it was more “acceptable” to get picked off like that, I was referring to a straight steal rather than a H&R.

by Giant among Angels on Sep 1, 2009 10:31 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I think I agree, but just to clarify. It’s more acceptable (from Torres’ POV) to get picked off if he’s trying a straight steal as opposed to on a hit & run, because you should NEVER get picked off on a hit and run. But from a strategy point of view, a hit and run there would have been OK, whereas a straight steal was a stupid gamble.
But IMO it was boneheaded either way, it only matters so we can know whether we should be mad at Torres for getting picked off on a hit and run or at Bochy for calling for a steal in that situation.
by taliesin on Sep 1, 2009 10:37 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He might have been safe but still a bad move to steal.

When I watch a game like this
which has been unfortunately a common occurrence this year, I start thinking. If I were a Lincecum or a Cain, or a Sanchez, I’d get really, really, really tired of wasting my time pitching shutouts only to lose because my team fields its worst lineup of the year on the road against the defending league champions on the day the team is tied for a playoff spot for the first time in multiple years.
And when my contract came up, you better believe I’d remember. It’s one thing to not be motivated primarily by money. These guys might not be motivated only by money- but if they’re motivated by competition and winning, that might be even worse news for the Giants when the arb clocks finally run out for each of them.

I’m not going to get to disappointed about this game. Even for the Giants, nearly half the lineup was backups; and the people missing were the best hitters on the team (yes, even Molina).
Truthfully, for the team to limit a playoff team to one run with the inconsistent fourth starter on the mound, that’s a legitimate bright side.
Getting healthy is key, but with Sanchez, Molina and Sandoval in the starting lineup, this game might’ve been a lot different.

Frustrating
The only difference between the Giants tonight and a stacked defending world series champ was that they executed the plays that they taught us in little league. The Phillies created that run. Single, steal, and get this….A GROUNDER TO THE RIGHT SIDE. Utley made it look so easy. Why the hell haven’t the Giants hitters been able to do that all year long instead of trying to hit pitches in the dirt? If Utley doesn’t get the runner over and makes an out (ala Uribe in the 2nd) then Garko isn’t playing halfway-in trying to keep the runner from going home on a ball hit right at him. Who knows? He might have gotten a glove on Ryan Howard’s weird one-handed bat throw for a double. I am not a Joe Morgan fan, but the only thing going through my head for the rest of the game was his voice saying “Fundamentals!” Dammit Joe Morgan!

Someone needs to say it
Sandoval and Molina are limping around these days because they’re fat and out of shape. It’s too late for Molina, but if Pablo wants to be a superstar in this league, (and well he should be) he needs to get in better shape for next year and the rest of his career.

So I was looking over Sanchez’s numbers … this is what he’s done since returning to the rotation, not counting the no-hitter:
9 starts, 53.2 innings — basically 6 innings per start
27 walks, 66 strikeouts
6 hr
15% line-drive rate
3.35 ERA, 4.04 FIP
That strikeout rate is 11.07 k/9, which would be far and away the best in baseball over a full season.
