I’m pretty sure that’s so he can do one of those sentimental, retire-as-a-Giant type things, right guys?

hopefully Bowker is up for good…
question I hope someone can answer: what’s the logic behind the expanded September roster? Is the point to help replace players that are hurting late in the year? Is just to allow teams to check out prospects?

I think Hinshaw still has a future. If gained some command he could be a very very useful lefty out of the pen because his stuff is electric. His last 13.2 IP in Fresno he had 27 K and 2 BB, and while Fresno’s Fresno, I think that is reflective of the stuff he’s got if he can throw strikes.

Well I was thinking a little more long term with regards to Hinshaw than just the next 30 days. That said, I’m gonna go ahead and believe it when i see it with regards to the Unit. Even IF he manages to come back, this is a guy who gave up 18 HRs and 31 BB in 91 innings of work back when he was pitching every 5 days and relatively healthy. I’m not really seeing how a torn rotator cuff and 3 months off is too likely to improve those results.

by Kitspool on Sep 1, 2009 12:43 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
They generally don’t move players to the 60 day DL unless they really need the space on the 40 man roster. I assume because every player on the 60 day at season’s end is another roster spot they’ll have to find (and another player who might have to be cut) come November.

No need to? I’ve always thought that there might be a clause in the Bargaining Agreement that prevents teams from carrying less than 25 men on the 25-man (which they really wouldn’t) or carrying less than 40 men on the 40-man (which would save them money and options I guess).

Randy Winn Has Been Worth 1.8 WAR Thus Far This Year And Has Thus Already Earned His Salary
Bowkermania Fantasyland aside (your belief in MLE as opposed to actual MLB production) Then Is No Way Bowker is a better option then Randy Winn. Defense (run prevention) counts just as much as offense and more so when we are talking about Bowkermania’s fantasy offense.

Randy Winn Has Been Worth 1.8 WAR Thus Far This Year And Has Thus Already Earned His Salary
Great. Hats off to him, and his salary. He’s still a worse bet to get us into the playoffs than Bowker. By far.
your belief in MLE as opposed to actual MLB production
It’s funny, the teams that develop good young position players seem to take AAA stats seriously. But, cool, you can hang out with Sabes (and his sterling career of developing position players) in the “only MLB performance matters” corner.
Defense (run prevention) counts just as much as offense
Well, if you’re talking about not making Dave Ortiz your starting shortstop, sure. But when you are talking about the difference between 2009-vintage Randy Winn and 2009-vintage John Bowker (whose legs are ten years fresher), I’m gonna have to disagree with you there.
by SnowLeopard on Sep 1, 2009 1:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
MLE Isn't Useless
It does have it value over a long haul but is much less valuable in predicting the short haul which is what is needed for a playoff run. Bowker has already had his MLB shots both this year and last and the Giants have rightly concluded that giving him a starting role now and time to find himself at the MLB level would have a large negative impact on their playoff chances.
Finallty, your comment on Randy Winn’s defensive advantage over John Bowker is just flat as ignorant.

Well none of the september callups are likely to get much playing time so you’re really interested in pinch hitters, defensive replacements and extra bullpen arms.
We’ve got the extra 1B & Bowker (although he might see some more playing time) as pinch hitters, Torres as defensive replacement and Joaquin as an extra arm.
Neither of the middle infielders are good defenders or hitters so that’s why neither’s been called up. I’m sure they’ll be up after Fresno’s season or if there’s a need due to injury.
Holm isn’t on the 40 man roster which is why he’s not been called up although i’m suprised we aren’t interested in another catcher with Molina out.
There aren’t that many non-injured arms on the 40 man roster at the moment to call up. They’ve called up Hinshaw & Joaquin, English isn’t major league ready and Martinez can’t be called up yet. Sadowski isn’t really a major league pitcher although they could have called him up to provide an extra arm. Not sure why Matos hasn’t been called up.

Hmm, let’s see…
1. Has little or no clothing sense (wears an unflattering shade of red).
2. Is always lowering the thermostat – women always want to raise it.
3. Actively encourages drunken, unruly behavior.
4. Never asks for directions.
5. Always looking to make a deal.

Let the Guzman era begin (part III)
From this day forward, Christmas will be celebrated on September 1st; the day that Jesus arrived.

1) I’m glad Bowker and Guzman called up. They could be useful PH. Maybe Guzman could play some 3B.
2) Joaquin is much needed for this bullpen. Hopefully Matos and Runzler are here in a week
3) WTFrandsen. Molina and Sandoval are hurt, Sanchez is on the DL, the Infield could use some help.
4) I know hindsight is 20/20, etc., but Paulino sure would be useful right about now.
Brand new adoptive daddy for the Big Unit. Congrats go out to my son for his 300th win. Only 211 more wins until he catches Cy Young!

Guzman can’t handle 1B, so there isn’t much chance he plays 3B

Seems to me they should DFA Bocock and bring up Williams or Holm.

Seems to me they should have done this back when they picked Holm to DFA rather than Bocock. But you’re right, they should have a back-up catcher.
