Post-Game Thread: OTHER PLAYERS JOIN IN FREDEMPTION 09

Man, that game was awesome, I'm so glad I was able to watch the whole thing and see all the awesome plays and everything.

Wait.

But, the Giants won! Barry Zito continued his streak of being extremely useful, Eugenio Velez continued his streak of being "Wait, was that really Eugenio Velez?" and Bengie Molina is getting ready to sign the dotted line on a three year extension. Most importantly of all, the bullpen pitched three innings, giving up three hits, no walks and no runs. It's good to see that, because I don't know about everyone else, but the pessimism from last night was really sort of lingering into the early innings of this game.

I LOVE THIS TEAM AGAIN. For now.

Todays Game

With 8 earned runs [2.32 era] in his last 31 innings covering 5 starts while raising a dismal yet undeserved 5-9 record to 8-10 isn’t exactly a combination that could run someone out of town. It looks like Lady Luck has sprinkled some on him for a change. One minor touch of irony in todays game is Bronson Arroyo’s lifetime record is now 81-81 while Barry Zito’s current 8-10 has similar numbers we can all see as plain as day…

About last night...

Long time reader first time “on the chronic.” Last night hurt in so many ways…I had the awful experience of being there, with a good pov for the comedy of errors. I ran out of section 125 after the dropped ball at the plate incident, with Mrs. Just Once wondering what was wrong. Enough background…my point is this:

This bounceback today was nice…only capable of being executed by a young and loose club that has the ability to blow off the media, go out, get a little messy after the game, and forget about it. I didn’t know how they would respond today, and I feared last night’s mess meant of those peaches of a loss (8-0 Dusty, for example) today. But they didn’t lose – they won a tight one.

This means good things.

Brian Wilson still bugs me

Even after a good game. I found a stat that sums it up. Relief pitchers measured by number of runners allowed per 9 innings. Wilson isn’t even among the best 20 in the NL:

http://nationalpost.stats.com/mlb/getleaders.asp?rank=312&btnGo=Go

If there’s one thing I don’t want to see from a closer, it’s putting runners on.

by achiappanza on Aug 8, 2009 5:52 PM PDT up reply actions

How’s it different for the rest of them pitchers? Isn’t keeping runners off base the goal? or is it not allowing runs? I’m seriously curious how you differentiate the goals of a closer from those of other pitchers.

by FreshStart on Aug 8, 2009 8:21 PM PDT up reply actions

it’s not, that’s the point. Closers are often evaluated by the number of saves instead of the metrics that actually measure successful pitching.

Randy Winn is in time out until his OBP gets back over .330.

by oldjacket on Aug 8, 2009 8:30 PM PDT up reply actions

Wilson's numbers aren't so poor

He’s definitely improved them over the last month or two. The WHIP (1.19) is really in a respectable range, although not elite for a closer. The BAA is .214. Really, he’s been pretty solid for a while – he’s probably around the top 10 of closers in the majors right now.

However, I think Bochy really should have a tighter leash on him – most of us here can tell when Wilson’s got it and when he doesn’t. Bochy’s decision to run him out the other night to get 5 outs when Wilson had hardly pitched the prior week – and then not having a short hook – was pretty dumb IMO.

by otis29 on Aug 9, 2009 7:25 AM PDT up reply actions

Short hook?

I believe I may have mixed my metaphors.

by otis29 on Aug 9, 2009 7:26 AM PDT up reply actions

I disagree that it was bad to send him out with 5 outs. I actually give Bochy credit for what passes for "bold" these days.

In the current game, most managers are so automated and robotic about the use of the closer— [in robot voice:] Only send out closer to start 9th inning if team ahead by 3 or 2 or 1 run. [End robot voice]

One of the things that has driven lots of people nuts (I have read essays by a handful of people, including Rob Neyer) is that sometimes the game needs saving in the 8th inning, or even the 7th. So if the closer is supposed to be the guy who can come in and extinguish the other team, then a manager should bring him in when the game needs rescuing, not just for a set of circumstances that is “ideal” for closers.

That said, I agree with you that it is clear early in Papa Dubs’s appearances whether he has it or not, but by that point on Friday night, the Giants did not have a lot of better options once that was obvious.

Nen would put runners on base, but I never doubted that he would eventually get the save / end the inning, sure there were times that he blew saves, but when Nen blew a save it was shocking. I’m super down for that. Unfortunately, I know the family. Ever since their son (good friend of mine) passed away, they aren’t interested it. I don’t even think they have the lease on the place anymore. Too many memories at that bar and in that place.

Although… that’s not to say that someone else won’t come in and open up a restaurant in that spot. It’s a great location.

Is there a game on tv tonight? With the 1pm start time for the Giants today, I keep thinking it’s Sunday and there’s a Miller game on later on.
