Maybe the Giants undervalued Alderson!
I know he is gone, a pirate farmhand, but the break is sudden and he must be followed. Followed more favorably than in a Tyler Walker kind of way. Tyler came in to pitch to Hanley Ramirez tonight with the bases loaded. Ramirez, possibly one of the best hitters in baseball faced Good old overweight Walker, who struck him out. Phillies still lost. But Alderson, the hope of many who envisioned a Lincy, Cain, Bumgarner, Alderson and (Sanchez/Zito)rotation in 2011is still too emotionally bound to giants fans, that many have just not yet gotten over his departure. .
Big Timmy "A" today, headlined the crappy Altoona team, by going 6 no hit innings. A couple of more outings like that and Sabean will have to insist that the pirates include a player to be named later to complete the Sanchez, for Alderson deal.

I was generally a little against the trade but it wasn’t particularly bad & i came to terms with it pretty quickly. As is the way with players, Alderson was over-rated by us before the trade and is becoming under-rated now he’s left. The Giants probably valued him pretty accurately in that they liked him very much, but were willing to trade him if the situation dictated.
Alderson’s perfomance tonight means nothing as it’s just one game and a minor league game at that. It shows that he’s a very talented pitcher but then we all know that anyway. It also didn’t really answer any of the questions marks with him which is that his strikeout rate is low (3 K’s in the 6 innings) and that his stuff may not transfer as effectively to the major league level (which will be unproven until he reaches the majors)

Freddie Sanchez is the second best hitter on the team and the only Giants’ player last night that could catch the ball. I’m happy with the trade. Let me know when we have a huge hole in our rotation and Alderson is pitching no hitters against major league teams.
Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!
That was actually a very good poll, representing a wide array of opinions. Well done!

We traded Alderson?
When did this happen?
We should have discussed this.

We never should have let Tyler Walker go!

I never paid enough attention to Alderson to speak knowledgeably about him. But, that doesn’t mean I don’t have a criteria for evaluating how good Alderson will be for the Pirates. Here it is in a nutshell: the Pirates GM appears to be way better than the Giants GM, therefore Giants probably got hosed and Alderson will be a stud ML pitcher.
’nuff said.
Eugenio "Skinny Panda" Velez post All Star OPS 1.079
“Pirates GM is better than Giants’ GM?” Just what are you basing that on? He’s made a flurry of trades, and pretty much all of baseball thinks he got relatively nothing. Alderson is pretty much the best prospect they have acquired for all of that major league talent, and the jury is still out on him.

i didnt go out of my way to find opinions on the Pirates’ GM but while looking for info on the Alderson deal i read more than a few times that the trade with Seattle was decent for them also.
He also made a horrible overdraft in June, which I hate having to say about a kid from my alma mater. BA did a draft podcast during which I think Jim Callis made a really articulate argument against that pick — even if you wanted a signability pick it was the wrong way to go (since they still overspent getting Tony signed).

A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Although in fairness, they’re strategy of drafting a bunch of HS pitchers who were thought unsignable and then throwing 1st round money at them was aggressive and successful. So kudos for that.

I have no idea what that Tyler Walker/ Hanley Ramirez part is doing in your post.
I think people are too focused on the future here, and not enough on the present. The addition of Sanchez gives us a more adequate offense, and could really help the team this season. Alderson is a highly regarded prospect, but for some reason people seem to think that means he is undoubtedly the next big thing even though he always projected to be a back of the rotation starter (and his stock has fallen quite a bit lately).
I hear so much about Joe Nathan and Francisco Liriano, but nobody here ever seems to mention all the highly touted prospects like Vogelsong, Foppert, etc. I know Scott Barnes has been doing well this season, but once he got traded people acted like we just lost Madison Bumgarner. I just hope I’m not going to have to hear this argument over and over again after every single minor league game Alderson starts. Why can’t we just appreciate the fact that we now have a really good second baseman, both defensively and offensively (who I think should be hitting in the 3 spot)?

Vogelsong wasn’t that highly touted. Pretty much everyone thought the Giants had fleeced the Pirates from the moment that trade went down.

as I remembered it, opinions varied on Vogelsong. I remember reading at the time of the trade that some thought Vogelsong had a chance to be “something special.”

Past, future, present.
Being time is linear, we can discuss the past, the present, and the future, sometimes all in the same post. A concept the McCoven should be able to grasp. Some of our past top prospects were injured, and there went their careers. Joe Fontenot, Jesse Foppert, Nathan came back from injury, Jerome Williams didn’t, nor did his mental outlook, Liriano has not been the same since his surgery. So if your saying a prospect is not a sure thing because injuries can occur, is of course obvious. And what the heck happenned to William VanLandinghams stuff? Soloman Torres was a headcase. Grilli was never going to be a Lincecum or Cain. So one can delve into the intricacies of our passed prospects. How they turned out, does not always reflect badly on the scouts. Injuries can be totally unpredictable. That does not mean that we wont enjoy Freddie Sanchez’s play in a giants uniform.
But that's just it , BB...they're passed. Or past.
Not present.
And as I look into the future I don’t see …well , it is foggy. And dark.
And I can neither confirm nor deny that I’ve been into the goody bag again…

My Take On Alderson
I saw Tim Alderson pitch in person. I find it comical that there are those who criticize this trade without actually ever seeing him in person….In fact the following is what I posted in a fanpost back in May:
<<<Tim Alderson had an interesting evening. His fastball topped out at 88 (which was disappointing to me) but his off speed pitches were spot on. Now, I don’t know if his poor velocity was due to a slow radar gun at the park or because he was pitching on 3 days rest, but his fastball looked very hittable to me…He was behind most of the hitters but did not issue any walks because simply put, when the going gets rough, Tim knows how to throw strikes!!>>>>
Bottom line is, IMHO Alderson was way over-rated and will be nothing more than a marginal pitcher when facing major league hitters..

So you are going to tell us that he will be a marginal pitcher in the majors!
And this is because a 19 or 20 year old dude, did not have his best fastball the day that you saw him pitch. It is possible that you are absolutely correct. But this would probably be just slightly more likely than random chance.

I saw him pitch on a different day and I wasn’t blown away. Good control, not overwhelming stuff. He may become a decent major leaguer, maybe not… his ceiling is not all that high.
Dare I say it? Third starter at best.

I didn't mind trading either Barnes or Alderson on their own
but trading both disappointed me a bit. Here’s hoping Wheeler signs and performs as a draft pick that high should.
