Excuse me, sir
but didn’t you say something along the lines of, “I don’t except the Giants to win many games this year, but this is definitely one of them” before the game?
This is why i hate baseball. Whenever I feel good about this team, something terrible happens.

"I suddenly hate Canada with a passion = BASTARDS!!!!!! " -Mr K, Upon hearing Moyes filing Chapter 11
I don't think "over managing" is the problem with either dusty or Bochy.
I think they are — for mostly different reasons and maybe a few overlapping reasons — just bad managers.
Worst overmanager I have ever seen in 30 years of paying attention to baseball is Roger Craig. That guy thought that pushing all the trick buttons and pulling all the trick levers was what actually won ballgames. Made Billy Martin look like Joe Torre on Prozac.

Oh man ragging on Hum baby

"I suddenly hate Canada with a passion = BASTARDS!!!!!! " -Mr K, Upon hearing Moyes filing Chapter 11
In my 40 years Craig was the BEST manager.
I doubt Dusty could have wrung winning records out of that 1986-92 bunch. Nobody who went through the Roger Craig years doubts that the 1993 team got soft down the stretch because Dusty didn’t know how to manage the pitchers — he never did learn throughout his entire tenure at SF nor his time in Chicago.
If you know that your pitcher can throw a strike on the next pitch, why not? You had to pitch out more in the 80’s because the STOLEN base was the primary weapon of many of the better offenses — St. Louis, Houston, LA, Montreal and Cincinatti had permanenent GREEN lights.
If you know that your pitcher can throw a strike on the next pitch, why not?
Yes, pitches who get to 2-0 counts are notorious strike-throwers.
GROUGTHINK ALERT
In the 80's they were better at it.
Why? Not as much power at the plate in those days so they weren’t so wary about challenge fastballs, and player BA were therefore much lower.
And batters couldn’t tell the difference between a splitter and a regular FB so there were a lot of cheap grounders induced by Giants pitching. Too bad the splitter caused arm problems, or people would still thow it all the time.

The Reds took a lot of pitches for balls that the Giants would have hacked at for strike 3 or fouled off.
I was in 324, so I didn’t have a good angle on the plate, but it seems to me that the home plate umpire just stopped calling strikes. Did the Giants’ get squeezed as badly as it seemed to me? Oh, and did Gonzalez go on the check swing? It looked like he did from our seats.

You already have a Utility guy in Uribe, and both Pablo and Ishi could have played first. I really don’t see why he was signed to begin with.
I definitely do not feel bad for him. I want them to have the best players that give them the best chance to win, so having a soft spot for Aurilia is thrown out the window. I’d much rather have Guzman as a late-inning PH

So this game ruined my evening on many levels but…
This morning registration opened for Fall semester (at SFSU) at 9am and I had my class numbers and all that shit lined up waaaay ahead of time. Checked available seats for the classes minutes before the floodgates opened. At 8:59 I’m sitting there with the browser open ready to go. Clicks over to 9am. I cut and pasted the numbers from a Word doc I had open so that I wouldn’t mistype or something. Got 3 of the 4 classes but that 4th one I was denied and it was the one that I needed the most (as part of my Segment III GE). FAIL.
All day I was all WTF about this because I am meticulous about these sorts of things. Like pre-planned to the point of obsession. Registration closes on Monday am so all day I’d open the browser, look at the class seating availabilty.. nothing open still.
After the game tonight, getting ready to crash out and check it again. A WAIT LIST SPOT OPENED!!! I can’t overstate how stoked it has made me. Takes away the stinging pain of tonight’s loss (a little).

That’s where this game was lost. You pull Affeldt because of one walk, when the guy has been the best reliever in the league at inducing DP’s? You pull a pitcher with an ERA of 1.00 for a guy with an ERA of 6.00 because of the lefty-righty shit? I can clearly see Bochy being the Cardinals manager and lifting Pujols for a lefty pinch hitter when the other team brings in a righty.
Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!

such a crappy game
to watch from the early innings until the end was just painful in so many ways. Watching Randy hit, Brian Wilson throw balls, Romo throw discs that are balls, the same play to Pablo botched twice, Affeldt pulled after one batter (I assumed he was hurt, why the hell else would you pull your best reliever after one batter), wild pitch, suck suck suck

I don’t know if the pitches Wilson threw in the ninth were close or not, it seemed like the umpire wasn’t calling close pitches all game but…
i mean, if the strike zone was small… why did the Giants draw all of one (two?) walks the whole goddamn game? Oh wait, I know.

I think the point here was the same pitch that was ball four to Votto was called a strike earlier in the count. If it’s a strike on the first pitch of the at bat, it’s a strike on the last pitch. It’s only fair there that if the ump calls that pitch a strike, the pitcher feels like he can go to that spot again and get a called strike three. As for Gonzalez’ at bat, he did NOT hold up his swing in time. That was strike three.

I’m too tired to get angry at this point. I just hope this game was ugly enough to make the giants brass “suggest” a change to bochy because he obviously won’t do anything any time soon.
Yea i agree, it is ONLY ONE game, but the fashion they did it in was terrible, 5 errors? really? 5 errors? how often does that happen in the big leagues?

I feel badness coming on. I may skip tomorrow’s game due to a sudden and acute distaste for all things competiton-related.
just got back from the game
and blah just want to go to sleep and forget about this one. My biggest things I noticed was that Affeldt shouldn’t have been pulled so quickly. How many times does he walk guys then get double plays? I know thats not conventional, but Affeldt should have stayed in.
My second is that Winn looks old and tired. Left guys on base and really looked bad at the plate every time up.
Also, seemed like the Giants pitchers, Timmy included, just couldn’t get that strikeout pitching going tonight. Maybe it was the strike zone they were worried about?
I was sitting field level behind home plate, and it looked like that strike zone was minuscule.

Did Lewis get a good jump there? It seems to me the ball was slowly hit and Lewis should have had a chance to make that a much closer play. I wouldn’t be surprised if he hesitated there before going.

LINCECUM HAS SPOILED US
Maybe not all of us but I personally expected this to be a easy win not because it was the reds but because its was Timmy’s turn to pitch. His performance was actually right there with how he normally does but the game or rather the rest of the team simply didn’t want to cooperate. I think everyone except Timmy should be sent home without a shower so they know just how much they stunk tonight. (no pun intended?)
I can;t believe I went to the game
Good seats and a parking pass, was looking forward to a Lincecum gem; but dear god, everyone in the 216 section knows what I think of Edgar Renteria. The fact that our idiot of a GM keeps bring Rich Aurillia back (we now have 3 1b on the roster, but no backup middle infielder) is ridiculous.

Sorry dude, but i aint that kinda critic of my own team… i just can’t do it, unless they’re reallllly sucking, but we’re effing 11 games over and i just can’t do it
I can do it when a guy comes in, first blows the game and then the next inning can’t get a single out except for the one they gave him. It takes a lot but truly awful performances just deserve it, imo.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.

Yea, and that’s your opinion, i respect it, but i just can’t do it, this team has done so damn well, even thanks to wilson, but yea, he blew it, but i’m not pointing him out as the sole culprit in any of this, it’s just stupid, i’m sorry, but that’s my opinion and how my dad taught me, they’ve exceeded my expectations and if they lose, well, i can take it. It’s when they suck and continue to do so where i get pissed
That’s fair enough. Like I said, it takes a lot to get me to boo or to leave a game early and tonight’s game crossed that line.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I still blame Bochy and Romo more than I blame Wilson. Bochy’s decision to pull Affeldt after one batter forced the whole bullpen out of whack. As bad as that decision was, Romo cannot come into a mild man on first nobody out inning and turn it into a bases loaded one out situation. He was actually lucky to have that, because Brandon Phillips’ ball should have been out. Now you bring Wilson into a situation he should never be brought into, a bases loaded situation. As for the walks in the ninth, on another day two of those would have been strikeouts. The only thing I blame Wilson for is the walk to Brandon Phillips, because he clearly lost his focus there. The game was still tied and he still had a chance to get out of it, but he let his displeasure with the umpires affect his pitching.
Proud new dad of Edgardo errr Edgar Renteria!!!
Blame...
is a zero sum game. Anger is not.
I’m pretty much equally angry at a lot of people (even now), for last night’s mess.
Bochy, Renteria, Lewis, Romo, Affeldt, Bengie, Pablo, Wilson, Winn (hacking 2-0 in the ninth), Timmy (yes, even Timmy) each had opportunities to stand up and do something that might have made a difference in this game. And each of them screwed up in galling ways.
Oh, and I’m always angry at Sabean, just out of principle.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
He deserved it

I’ll say it again, and this is only from the vantage I had at the stadium, which undeniably is worse than what you got on TV, but that strike zone seemed fucking ridiculous

PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
I mean...
The Gonzalez and Votto ABs were a horrible combination of bad umpiring and bad pitching from Wilson, but it sure seemed to me like almost none of the balls were close on the Phillips AB.
Matt Cain: He'll save children, but not the Dodger children.
PABLO SANDOVAL AM STEAL DEATH, DESTROYER OF WORLDS.
The Phillips AB was when everything really became unglued. There was just a complete lack of concentration from B-Weezy there, with no room for error. I’m still mad about it.
"He is Tim Lincecum...the Most Interesting Pitcher in the World."
He was bad on a couple pitches
but they could have been called either way. He should throw strikes, not bitch about it to the umpire. Most of the pitches he threw weren’t even close. When you throw only 15 of your 31 pitches for strikes, it’s not the umpires fault.
Agreed, but if he sees Lincecum, Affeldt, Romo all get squeezed, its gotta be in his mind that he has to throw shit right over the plate. I’m not saying that its ok for Wilson to fuck up, but I can imagine that has to be rough for a pitcher
With malice towards the Dodgers
he gets guys to 0-2
then doesn’t throw anything close. Does he really think he’s going to get that close corner pitch after throwing 3 straight pitches way out of the strike zone? He has a 100 mph fastball for christ sakes, throw it in the strike zone.
He got a total whiff on one of the few 99-100 mph fastballs he actually threw in the strike zone too.

Another survivor from Night of Terror at the ballpark writes:
1. That strike zone was way the fuck small from where we were sitting (Sec. 121). Giants pitchers seemed to be trying to thread the needle all night, and I’ve never seen so many 2-strike pitches fouled off or turned into hits. Timmy’s 4th inning was brutal for that reason.
2. So…umpire sucked, but that doesn’t excuse five (5. Cinco. Cinq.) errors. Worst two innings of baseball I’ve seen in a long time.
3. Rich Aurilia’s back? Really? And now that he got that pinch hit, we will never see Travis Ishikawa again.
4. I happened to recognize SFGuy (who I’d met at McCovey Night) sitting about ten rows in front of us tonight, but didn’t want to bother him. Hope you enjoyed the game as much as the rest of us did, SFGuy!
5. In bobblehead form, Jon Miller looks far more svelte than in real life. Also, he’s sitting in what looks to be an Aeron chair.
6. We lost a game that Homer 6.59 ERA Bailey started. Fuck.

Not only was the game utter bullshit, but getting home sucked a fat one as well. People seem to have forgotten about that thing called walking. Great point… nevermind then, yea we walked from basically ATT straight to market street using beale i believe and other side streets
People are OK if they use 3rd Street to go up to Market. A lot of people walking, a ton of cars driving by.
Yea i was walkin with Dad, and i’m like 6’2 245 and not sure anyone would want to come up to me, but usually i just walk on embarcaderro until market then boom, there at bart
you’re the same size as I am, although I’m a little lighter. Some guy tried to take my cell phone on the subway the other day, and I was shocked because guys don’t usually mess with me because I’m so big. He looked like a punk though, so I called his bluff and he scampered off into the next car. He didn’t know that if he had come back strong at me I probably would have fainted!

You freakin' Sissies, thank Gawd there were no blogs in 1983-85.
Those were the years I actually started paying attention to every single game. You got no guts crying over a minor meltdown in AUGUST! You milquetoste yuppies make me ill. I used to risk Juvie sneaking into Candlestick after the 7th inning to see Giants games where late inning rallies were riding on the bats of weakasses like Tom O’Malley, Champ Summers, and Max Venable (in case Joel Youngblood was already in the game) to make magic.
I can’t believe you sadsacks are ragging on Rich, Edgar, and Bengie. Especially Edgar, until this year he was on his way to beeing one of the top 20 shortstops of all time — and he’s still only 34.
Did you do all of that uphill, both ways, and in the snow?
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Edgar may be an all time great, but none of that was done in a Giants’ uniform. All we have gotten is the end of the road.

You whine like a Gary Carter hater in 1990.
That’s the fault of the GM and FM not the player. Edgar earned his current slowness by playing aggressive SS defense with a 3B’s body — the management know this but they keep using him. It’s not like he’s malingering.
I reserve my right to point out this obvious fact (what you call whining). True, that it was a bad signing, and I am sure his doing his best, but his best is still really slow.

i’m only 21… but i dont get why going to see it at Candlestick or Polo grounds is important, correct me if i’m wrong though, i’m just wondering what it has to do with anything
In the post-Mays years the Giants were usually crap.
Meaning we got used to cheering for crap teams whose crap players were constantly agitating to get traded someplace warm. Most people who hated the Giants were playing for the Giants. They used to do radio interviews and demand to be traded!
You had to have some real intestinal fortitude to show up at the park in those days, and mostly it was to boo the Dodger fans — who often outnumbered the Giants fans until after the 7th inning when the high school kids would sneak in — about 2000 of them.
Got you, i iknow my dad was one of those guys that would sneak into seal stadium, or Candlestick for that matter just to see Mays, but what i’m saying is, i didn’t ask to be born in 1988, so i didn’t have the opportunity to see them play, so i hate it when people say, Oh i’m older than you and if you were around in those days you’d know what it was like, i’m just saying i didn’t have that opportunity, i was born in the 80’s so whatever
Top 20 SS of all time?

Vizquel is a top 20 SS, yea there are a ton more short stops better than Edgar, even over his career, Jeter is better
Top 2 or 3

I wrote "until this year".
Edgar based on his 2 most recent years was on pace (provided he played 4 more full seasons including this one) for 1441 runs, 2758 hits, 512 doubles, 1080 rbi and and 319 steals.
That’s far better than HOF Travis Jackson.
Bengie’s slow ass not getting out in front of plate to play like a first basemen drew the line for me. I left because Bengie left Panda hanging not once, but twice!
Poor Timmy, he worked his ass off to keep the team ahead.
Bengie is entirely to blame for dropping the ball on the first play at home, but the second play at home was entirely due to Sandoval’s inexperience. Seeing the runner blocking a clean throw to home he should have taken the sure out at first and let the run score keeping in mind that it was the TOP of the NINTH and the 3 hottest Giants would bat in the bottom of the NINTH if a rally started. It’s once in a lifetime kind of choke.
Yeah, Pablo should have gotten the sure out at first on the 2nd grounder.

I am so incredibly glad that, after the umpire fail in the eighth, I said, “Okay, honey, we can watch old Angels episodes instead of baseball.” Normally I don’t bail like that, but I had baaaaaaaaaad feelings.
