I don't think "over managing" is the problem with either dusty or Bochy.

I think they are — for mostly different reasons and maybe a few overlapping reasons — just bad managers.

Worst overmanager I have ever seen in 30 years of paying attention to baseball is Roger Craig. That guy thought that pushing all the trick buttons and pulling all the trick levers was what actually won ballgames. Made Billy Martin look like Joe Torre on Prozac.

In my 40 years Craig was the BEST manager.

I doubt Dusty could have wrung winning records out of that 1986-92 bunch. Nobody who went through the Roger Craig years doubts that the 1993 team got soft down the stretch because Dusty didn’t know how to manage the pitchers — he never did learn throughout his entire tenure at SF nor his time in Chicago.

If you know that your pitcher can throw a strike on the next pitch, why not? You had to pitch out more in the 80’s because the STOLEN base was the primary weapon of many of the better offenses — St. Louis, Houston, LA, Montreal and Cincinatti had permanenent GREEN lights.

In the 80's they were better at it.

Why? Not as much power at the plate in those days so they weren’t so wary about challenge fastballs, and player BA were therefore much lower.

And batters couldn’t tell the difference between a splitter and a regular FB so there were a lot of cheap grounders induced by Giants pitching. Too bad the splitter caused arm problems, or people would still thow it all the time.

I was in 324, so I didn’t have a good angle on the plate, but it seems to me that the home plate umpire just stopped calling strikes. Did the Giants’ get squeezed as badly as it seemed to me? Oh, and did Gonzalez go on the check swing? It looked like he did from our seats.

right. I’m not saying that Nix’s BS bloop double was the umps fault, or all the line drives the Giants’ hit during the game that ended up in Redstocking gloves was the ump’s fault, but the strikezone really seemed to disappear. That’s why I was asking. But thanks for the useless cliche.

Honestly, it's simply our fault for signing him.

Gotta say, that was one of the worst games I’ve seen in a long time. Actually, the word “seen” is a bit of a stretch; I saw the double error and thought, “Tonight’s not going to be a good night,” and just read the McC comments. Turned out to be a wise decision.

OT: Had to post though

So this game ruined my evening on many levels but…

This morning registration opened for Fall semester (at SFSU) at 9am and I had my class numbers and all that shit lined up waaaay ahead of time. Checked available seats for the classes minutes before the floodgates opened. At 8:59 I’m sitting there with the browser open ready to go. Clicks over to 9am. I cut and pasted the numbers from a Word doc I had open so that I wouldn’t mistype or something. Got 3 of the 4 classes but that 4th one I was denied and it was the one that I needed the most (as part of my Segment III GE). FAIL.

All day I was all WTF about this because I am meticulous about these sorts of things. Like pre-planned to the point of obsession. Registration closes on Monday am so all day I’d open the browser, look at the class seating availabilty.. nothing open still.

After the game tonight, getting ready to crash out and check it again. A WAIT LIST SPOT OPENED!!! I can’t overstate how stoked it has made me. Takes away the stinging pain of tonight’s loss (a little).

Now look at me. I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!

I tried to explain that Bobblehead pulled Affeldt after 5 pitches and the game fell apart immediately. Guy is sticking to his guns with Bochy, gotta hand it to him.

by zodiac_chiller on Aug 7, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

That’s where this game was lost. You pull Affeldt because of one walk, when the guy has been the best reliever in the league at inducing DP’s? You pull a pitcher with an ERA of 1.00 for a guy with an ERA of 6.00 because of the lefty-righty shit? I can clearly see Bochy being the Cardinals manager and lifting Pujols for a lefty pinch hitter when the other team brings in a righty.

I think the point here was the same pitch that was ball four to Votto was called a strike earlier in the count. If it’s a strike on the first pitch of the at bat, it’s a strike on the last pitch. It’s only fair there that if the ump calls that pitch a strike, the pitcher feels like he can go to that spot again and get a called strike three. As for Gonzalez’ at bat, he did NOT hold up his swing in time. That was strike three.

My second is that Winn looks old and tired. Left guys on base and really looked bad at the plate every time up.

Also, seemed like the Giants pitchers, Timmy included, just couldn’t get that strikeout pitching going tonight. Maybe it was the strike zone they were worried about?

I was sitting field level behind home plate, and it looked like that strike zone was minuscule.

LINCECUM HAS SPOILED US

Maybe not all of us but I personally expected this to be a easy win not because it was the reds but because its was Timmy’s turn to pitch. His performance was actually right there with how he normally does but the game or rather the rest of the team simply didn’t want to cooperate. I think everyone except Timmy should be sent home without a shower so they know just how much they stunk tonight. (no pun intended?)

I still blame Bochy and Romo more than I blame Wilson. Bochy’s decision to pull Affeldt after one batter forced the whole bullpen out of whack. As bad as that decision was, Romo cannot come into a mild man on first nobody out inning and turn it into a bases loaded one out situation. He was actually lucky to have that, because Brandon Phillips’ ball should have been out. Now you bring Wilson into a situation he should never be brought into, a bases loaded situation. As for the walks in the ninth, on another day two of those would have been strikeouts. The only thing I blame Wilson for is the walk to Brandon Phillips, because he clearly lost his focus there. The game was still tied and he still had a chance to get out of it, but he let his displeasure with the umpires affect his pitching.

Bochy, Renteria, Lewis, Romo, Affeldt, Bengie, Pablo, Wilson, Winn (hacking 2-0 in the ninth), Timmy (yes, even Timmy) each had opportunities to stand up and do something that might have made a difference in this game. And each of them screwed up in galling ways.

Ok, i respect it, all i’m saying is that since he’s part of the team, i’m supporting him ON the field, and i could care less about what he does in being an ass, because i’m pretty sure there’s a good amount of other ball players that are asses to others as well. As much as he fucks up on the mound, he’s still atop the league in saves and last year too. I might be short sighted at looking at the saves but that’s all i care about, is closing out a game for a closer… if that makes any sense ha

Another survivor from Night of Terror at the ballpark writes:

1. That strike zone was way the fuck small from where we were sitting (Sec. 121). Giants pitchers seemed to be trying to thread the needle all night, and I’ve never seen so many 2-strike pitches fouled off or turned into hits. Timmy’s 4th inning was brutal for that reason.
2. So…umpire sucked, but that doesn’t excuse five (5. Cinco. Cinq.) errors. Worst two innings of baseball I’ve seen in a long time.
3. Rich Aurilia’s back? Really? And now that he got that pinch hit, we will never see Travis Ishikawa again.
4. I happened to recognize SFGuy (who I’d met at McCovey Night) sitting about ten rows in front of us tonight, but didn’t want to bother him. Hope you enjoyed the game as much as the rest of us did, SFGuy!
5. In bobblehead form, Jon Miller looks far more svelte than in real life. Also, he’s sitting in what looks to be an Aeron chair.
6. We lost a game that Homer 6.59 ERA Bailey started. Fuck.

Not only was the game utter bullshit, but getting home sucked a fat one as well. People seem to have forgotten about that thing called walking. I’ve heard it’s good, and it can get you from point A to point B. Just standing around on the train platform will not, in fact, get you anywhere. It makes life hell for other people. Apple cart, in summary, get the fuck out of my way.

I’ve never seen anything like the ninth inning in my life. The whole game was filled with tough calls on balls (heh) and that was bad enough. But the complete meltdown, after Velez and Molina hit homers, wow. Just wow. Congratulations, assholes, you deserved to lose that one after screwing the pooch.

I used to risk Juvie sneaking into Candlestick after the 7th inning to see Giants games where late inning rallies were riding on the bats of weakasses like Tom O’Malley, Champ Summers, and Max Venable (in case Joel Youngblood was already in the game) to make magic.

I can’t believe you sadsacks are ragging on Rich, Edgar, and Bengie. Especially Edgar, until this year he was on his way to beeing one of the top 20 shortstops of all time — and he’s still only 34.

In the post-Mays years the Giants were usually crap.

Meaning we got used to cheering for crap teams whose crap players were constantly agitating to get traded someplace warm. Most people who hated the Giants were playing for the Giants. They used to do radio interviews and demand to be traded!

You had to have some real intestinal fortitude to show up at the park in those days, and mostly it was to boo the Dodger fans — who often outnumbered the Giants fans until after the 7th inning when the high school kids would sneak in — about 2000 of them.

Top 2 or 3

Now look at me. I'm wet nurse to a last-place, dead-to-the-neck-up ball club, and I'm choking to death!

I wrote "until this year".

Edgar based on his 2 most recent years was on pace (provided he played 4 more full seasons including this one) for 1441 runs, 2758 hits, 512 doubles, 1080 rbi and and 319 steals.

That’s far better than HOF Travis Jackson.

Bengie’s slow ass not getting out in front of plate to play like a first basemen drew the line for me. I left because Bengie left Panda hanging not once, but twice!

Poor Timmy, he worked his ass off to keep the team ahead.

We put up 5 runs… how is that NOT acceptable? poor Timmy? jeeze

by PiKAgiant on Aug 8, 2009 10:51 AM PDT up reply actions

Bengie is entirely to blame for dropping the ball on the first play at home, but the second play at home was entirely due to Sandoval’s inexperience. Seeing the runner blocking a clean throw to home he should have taken the sure out at first and let the run score keeping in mind that it was the TOP of the NINTH and the 3 hottest Giants would bat in the bottom of the NINTH if a rally started. It’s once in a lifetime kind of choke.

Yeah, Pablo should have gotten the sure out at first on the 2nd grounder.

Ok. I’m ready to leave for the ballpark today and forget that Friday, August 7th, 2009 ever existed.

I am so incredibly glad that, after the umpire fail in the eighth, I said, “Okay, honey, we can watch old Angels episodes instead of baseball.” Normally I don’t bail like that, but I had baaaaaaaaaad feelings.

It’s probably not a good sign that I’m happy when Winn is out of the lineup.

After watching Winn’s bat last night, I’m fine with giving Lewis a chance today. Velez in RF scares me
