Around SBN: Ellenberger vs. Sanchez Heats Up, Hughes Talks Retirement

Vicente Padilla was just DFA'd by the Rangers for the purpose of releasing him. The link states that no team claimed him on waivers and the Rangers could find no trading partners. The Rangers will be eating the remaining ~ $6M of his salary and buy-out option.

Some people are urging us to go after John Smoltz as a 5th starter or reliever, so I was wondering if there's any interest in Padilla? I'm not pushing for it, but wouldn't be upset if it was handled properly. We could pay him the league minimum and probably start him out with a minor league contract, so there would be almost no risk involved.

His stats are messy, but he's only 31 and may benefit from getting out of Rangers Stadium, pitching in the NL again, and at AT&T. Here's his stats:

Interest? Only in punching him in the face.

is he going to give the rest of the team swine flu?

I’m surprised by this, as he’s been pretty valuable to the Rangers this year (in an on-again, off-again way). I can only see this as a salary move for something else, since the team has no money otherwise. But they’re dumb to cut loose a pitcher that’s been useful.

He’d be a serviceable fifth starter, but considering the names that have traded places in the last few days he’s not the best option out there.

I kind of like the idea of trying to sign him to a minor league deal with incentives, then put him in Fresno and let him work his way back into form. If we were willing to take a chance on 37 year old Ramon Ortiz, I would think that 31 year old Padilla should at least be considered. He certainly had years where he was a serviceable middle-of-the-rotation starter not too long ago.

That being said, I find it hard to believe that he’d sign a minor league deal with only 1 month left in that season. He’ll most likely wait for the offseason and try to hook up with some team that will give him a shot to make the major league club out of ST.

we took a chance on Ramon Ortiz? signing a guy to a minor league contract for no money (relatively speaking) is taking a chance?

Only if we need someone to come in from the bullpen, plunk an opposing batter and then get yanked/get ejected. Seems to be the only thing he’s “good” at.

Only if he can throw a fucking strike out of the bullpen.

This comment was an overreaction to Friday's game

I don’t care if he can throw a fucking strike out of the bullpen. I have no interest.

Wouldn’t be against having a look no as he’s done alright as a back of the rotation starter. His last 2 seasons have both been sub 5 ERA and his FIP’s actually lower than his ERA this year although his Strikeout rate is down.

He joins Smoltz in that i don’t mind if we take a look at them for 5th starter and also don’t mind if we don’t bother at all.

After seeing his attitude in the dugout against the A’s the other night, I don’t want him anywhere near our young pitchers staff. Only bad can come from douche bags like that

We already have Barry Zito and Brian Wilson to up the douche level.

The ump warned him after he beaned a guy, and he mocked the ump. That’s probably why he’s gone.

Not to mention laughing and smiling and pointing after his own guy got hit in return. Players love it when they get hit because their pitcher is a moron. Stupid DH rule

That’s a different kind of douche bag.
