Well Brad Penny sucks so not surprised there.
Wakefield got hurt. Dice K was already out of the picture.
Smoltz struggling at his age, in the AL East coming off a serious injury is no surprise either.
Wakefield and Dice K getting hurt and Penny and Bucholz’s struggles have hurt them a lot.

Not going to get excited since the Jays can just pull him back from waivers. As bad as they want to shed payroll I doubt they’d let him get away for nothing. And I don’t really want the Giants to trade anyone good for Rios at this point.
That said I’d be happy to get him.
by Hobbes2d on Aug 7, 2009 1:06 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
this
pretty normal process. Big time contracts always make their way to the waiver wire. Very rarely do these sort of things work itself out. Although I am curious to see how was willing to take on that sort of salary. Thats a substantial amount.

by Norcalfan10 on Aug 7, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don't think it would take a lot though
They have a crap load of payroll committed to next year. They don’t have a lot of options or flexibility unless they get rid of some people.
by superk1ng on Aug 7, 2009 1:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I always thought that their decision to keep Halladay
would coincide with a potentional Rios trade. Now with Rios and Rolen off the books, they could be free to sign Halladay to an extension.
Realistically, it probably wasnt even us who made the claim. If a team is willing to do this, I could see the Mets (doesnt delgado’s contract expire this season?) making the move.

Rios' patroling Right Fielder
would be pretty awesome. He’s an amazing defensive value. And although maddening inconsistent on offense, his numbers always seem to be there at the end of the year. He would be better than overpaying for Holiday or Bay. This would be an excellent move actually.

almost every team in MLB is going be put on waivers over the next few weeks. Many of them are going to be claimed, very few of them are actually going to switch teams.

yeah, but there’s actually been trades the last few days. Pavano was traded today, Gaudin was traded yesterday, and there was a minor deal for Anderson Hernandez. Looks like the GM’s predictions of lots of August deals are coming true, and they’ll even be more by the end of the month, because many teams who still think they’re in it will be gone by then.

I think that Rios is an exception to this, as he was heavily mentioned in trade rumors. Coupled with the fact that many McCoven are enamored with Rios on the while, it’s much more relevant than your average waiver claim.

The claiming team can not pull back their claim. However, they can refuse to trade any player or money for the player put on waivers, thus forcing his current owners to either pull back the waiver and keep him, or give him to the claiming team for nothing. In that case the claiming team would only be on the hook for his remaining contract – the entire term.

well, if they put Rios on irrevocable waivers, and he was claimed
why would the claiming team “trade” anything to the Blue Jays to get Rios

basically this
The Blue Jays now have three choices:
-They can let the claiming team have Rios and the $60MM-plus remaining on his contract.
-They can pull him back from waivers and keep him.
-They can work out a deal with the claiming team.
If they decide to pull him back, they cannot trade him until after the season is done.

Who are the realistic possibilities to claim him
Based on teams current situation and his contract, you can probably narrow down the possibilities a lot.
-The Giants
-Mets
-Braves?
-Rockies?
-Seattle?
-Cleveland?
-White Sox?
I left off teams who have a better record than us because if we didn’t claim him who cares who did. Not sure about teams with question marks, mostly because I can’t think off all their outfield situations off the top of my head. With help from the group, I think we can narrow this down.

Mostly bad guesses
There’s not enough money for Atlanta, Colorado, Seattle, Cleveland, or the White Sox (they just added > $50M in salary from the Peavy deal) to take him on. Don’t forget that Rios is still owed around $61.5M over the next 5.33 years. Also, don’t forget that a team may be claiming him as a blocking move to keep a competitor from getting him. They wouldn’t want him on their team, but they’d be gambling that the Jays would pull him off the wire when they tell the Jays they won’t trade anybody or any $$$ for Rios.
Also, you have to consider all of the teams in the AL (even those with better records than us), because the order goes: entire AL first, then entire NL. So, only the Fodgers and Phils are above us on the list.

by Fla-Giant on Aug 7, 2009 1:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah, I put ? because I wasn’t sure if he was a fit there. However, I highly doubt anyone would claim him as a blocking move with his contract and the current economic conditions. Also, if there are teams who would do that, it’s those above (except Cleve and Seat, possible Atl), but you don’t think they have the money.
Was wrong about the waiver rules, so I’d definitely add Red Sox to that list, maybe not so much the Yankees.
by AngelWillSaveUs on Aug 7, 2009 2:08 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Yeah
I agree that the only teams likely to take the gamble and block are big market teams in the playoff chase (ie. Yanks, Angels, and BoSox) – although Minaya is a nut-job and the Mets have money, so he could think that this would be a way to make a splash and save his job.
BTW, IMO the Yanks are the best fit for him (forgetting all the playoff implications) because they need a stud RF for next year to play alongside either Jason Bay or Matt Holliday in LF. They can easily afford him with Damon, Matsui, Petite and Hinske coming off the books this year.

Pettitte and Hinske don’t make that much money this year. And they’re not signing two big time FA outfielders. In fact the Yankees have been conservative since the off season splurge. There’s no way they’re doing another massive increase next year.

Well they dumped Lee and Martinez contract, so I figured they might have some financial flexibility. Sizemore in CF, not sure about the corners. I put some non-contenders on there because his contract is long so it doesn’t necessarily have to be a team contending this year but thinks they can in the near future.

Most likely the BoSox or Yanks
Here’s my guess – in the order of most likely to least likely:
1. BoSox: They suddenly need help. Youklis actually played LF last night. Bay is hurt, and, most importantly, they want to keep Rios away from the Yanks and Angels. Bay could fly the coop at the end of this season, so Rios could be nice insurance for that.
2. Yanks: They don’t so much need him this year, but he’d fit in so nice and cheaply next year – think of it as the lay-away plan that only costs them about $2.2M for the rest of this year. They have Damon playing LF now, with Hinske, Gardner, Cabrerra, and Swisher manning the other 2 spots off-and-on. Hinske, Damon, and Matsui (only DHing now) are all gone after this season, so Rios would fit in just fine. Until then he’s a nice bat of the bench and a better defender than any of their other OF’s except maybe Cabrerra.
3. Angels: With Torii Hunter still hurt, Vlad an injury just waiting to happen, and Bobby Abreu and Vlad FAs at the end of this season, Rios would seem to be a nice fit for injury relief this season and as the starting RF next year. Besides, the Angels didn’t take on any players before the trade deadline, so they have some salary to work with.
4. Giants: I hope this isn’t true, but you never know with Sabes in charge. I just can’t think of any team in the NL that could take on salary, and is in the postseason race. The Mets could afford him, but why take the chance now that they have no hope for the playoffs. IMO, Rios would be a nice fit on the Giants, except for the horrible terms of his contract. There’s no way that we should be handcuffing ourselves down to another long-term contract (he still has 5.33 years and $61.5M left on it – which comes out to a little under $12M per year). Our bad experiences with Zito and Rowand should be enough of a warning on that front.
Of course, this all could be wrong. For all we know, this could just be a claim that was put in by a team that doesn’t want Rios, but wants to block him from going to a competitor. They’re gambling that the Jays won’t call their bluff and give Rios away for no players in return (ie. a straight salary dump). I think that would be a good bet, as I can’t believe that the Jays would give him up for nothing in return – the fans would revolt.

Wrong, wrong, wrong
The Yanks are last in line in the AL, but ahead of every team in the NL. The order goes: entire AL first, then entire NL. So, only the Fodgers and Phils are above us on the list.
As for salary, as I wrote above, they only owe Rios about $2.2M for the rest of this year. The salaries that they shed for next year (Hinske, Damon, Matsui, …) more than make up for the $10M Rios is owed next year.

there’s no way a team blocks another by putting in a claim for a player signed thru 2014 and making 60 million dollars. Teams only block when it comes to some impending FA or player not making a lot of money. As for your predictions, the injury to Jason Bay is only day to day so they’re not claiming a contract like this because of a small injury. They also are negotiating a new contract with Bay and want to keep him past this season. There’s no room for both of them. I also say no to the Yankees, because of the reasons I mentioned above, added to the fact that they now look like the best team in baseball. Why add 60 million when you’re rolling? The Angels? Maybe.

I disagree with your opinions on the BoSox and Yanks
1. He fits in perfectly with the Yanks considering they’d only be paying him about $2M for the rest of this year to be at least a pinch-hitter and a defensive replacement. The Yanks have been starting Nick Swisher and Hinske in RF this year (and just recently Jerry Hairston). Do you really think they wouldn’t see Rios as a big upgrade? Then next year he’s a cheap (to them) starting RF to go along with Cabrera in CF and either Bay or Holliday in LF. Don’t forget that Damon, Hinske and Matsui are all gone at the end of this year. If for some reason they strike out on those 2, Rios would fill in nicely while they wait for Carl Crawford to become a FA after the 2010 season.
2. As for the BoSox, I don’t think their entire motive will be blocking. I think that Rios is at the very least a cheap insurance policy for them the rest of this season in case of the lingering hammy injury to Bay, and the always injury-prone JD Drew. Going forward, do you really think the BoSox are putting all thier eggs in one basket in regards to re-signing Bay? If they haven’t signed him by now they almost certainly won’t be able to as the season winds down (no reason for Bay not to test the market now with the Yanks likely to pay top $$$ to try and steal him away from their hated rival). Epstein usually has multiple back-up plans. Going forward, having Rios through 2014 would allow them to trade JD Drew (he’s too injury-prone – averaging < 120 games played per season in his career – and not nearly as good a defender as Rios), or replace Ellsbury in CF with a more powerful bat and just as good of a glove.

reply fail?
Um, do I make any predictions about Bay? I, too, doubt any team would cock-block at that high of expense, which is why I said they’d “def.” do it for a pitcher. Yanks need some back end help and so do the Red Sox, so it’d only make sense for the Sox to pick up any pitcher off Waivers they think the Yanks might be interested in. It’ll help their pitching, and it’ll prevent the Yanks from improving.

Well, the top 3 choices are only possible if the Giants didn’t claim because of the reverse order thing.
Winn, Johnson and Molina off the books next year, so I think the money is there if the Giants did claim him. Neal & Kieschnick are a few years away and Nate/FLew/Velez are nice stop gaps but no players you’d be too upset with bumping for a job once those guys are ready. I could see it being us. If it was, lets just hope Sabean gets the Jays would be happy to give up that contract for not too much.

Rios's contract
I agree that the per year amounts are quite nice. However, the length is just a killer. There’s no way we should risk spending $61.5M (guaranteed) over the next 5.33 year with the uncertainties of injuries, the economy, and the vagaries of performance likely to bite us at some point. The risk just isn’t worth the reward. Read the tea leaves. The only players that will be getting > 3 year contracts for the foreseeable future are the true superstars. All the rest will be fighting for the scraps.
Besides, he’s not likely to hit as well playing so many games in AT&T, PetCo, and Chavez Ravine versus Toronto, Fenway, Yankee Stadium, Camden Yards, and the Trop.

Also, much of Rios’s value resides in his superb UZR numbers, and it’s hard to know just how much to trust those. Is Bobby Abreu an almost-average outfielder, like this year, or is he a -2,301 run outfielder, like last year? UZR says yes! So I have no problem committing $70M to a player who’s value is UZR-driven, as that metric just so danged consistent.

If I may flip over to the other side of this argument for a moment — both last year and this year were huge outliers. For his career, he’s +12.9, which is still great. And fans and scouts alike all seem to agree that he’s a good fielder, unlike Abreu.
But I get the feeling there are park-specific or team-specific variables that haven’t been fully accounted for by fielding stats. We just don’t know exactly where the error bars are with UZR. And given Rios’s age, salary, and unspectactular hitting, you need to be SURE he’s a great fielder.

I didn’t even need to bring Abreu into the discussion:
Rios’s UZR/150 last year: 27.5
Rios’s UZR/150 this year: -.6
And he’s hitting .261/.315/.413. So he’d be our worst hitting outfielder? Sweet.
Committing $60M or whatever to a corner outfielder having a second straight sub-.800 OPS season? He’d better be able to snare home runs out of the air with his wang.

Well a couple of points:
a) Aside from this year he’s been consistantly ranked as a very good outfielder so it’s not simply a small sample size.
b) The scouting has backed up the stats as he’s always had a great reputation defensively.
c) He certainly gains a lot of value due to his defence but that’s not where all his value comes from. Even if you regress him back to a league average outfielder he’s still been worth around 3.5 WAR the past 2 seasons and been worth more than his contract will now be paying him.

That’s exactly what I’d do. I believe they want to get rid of Rios’ contract, and I would call their bluff. Do NOT give them anything of value. If they want one of the outfielders that Rios pushes out of a job, like Freddie Lewis, that’s fine, but nothing more than that. I wouldn’t even offer them Nate or Bowker, because Winn is leaving after this season.

Waivers:
A waiver is a permission granted to a Club that desires to assign or release one of its players. There are basically two types of waivers — waivers for the assignment of a player and waivers for the unconditional release of a player. In both cases, waivers are granted only after all the other Major League Clubs have been given an opportunity to claim the player and none has done so. With regard to assignment waivers, permission is granted for a specific period of time. With unconditional release waivers, once permission is granted the player is a free agent.

Any player under contract may be placed on waivers at any time. If a player is waived, any team may claim him. If more than one team claims the player from waivers, the team with the weakest record in the player’s league gets preference. If no team in the player’s league claims him, the claiming team with the weakest record in the other league gets preference. In the first month of the season, preference is determined using the previous year’s standings.
It’s true because it’s in blockquotes. So, essentially we’re third to last.

Any team that doesn’t have payroll flexibility. I am guessing that removes 2/3 of the teams.

I hope it's the Giants.
I don’t think there are too many teams that can take on that kind of contract. Anyways, this creates another logjam in the outfield. Bruce Bochy will never bench Winn, so Winn will probably shit to left, CF Rowand and RF Rios. Schierholtz gets the wrong end of the deal. Velez won’t get as much time in the outfield too.
Honestly, I think Nate is comparable to Rios defensively and offensively. Unless the team is willing to sit one of the old outfielders, I say don’t make the trade. Give Nate the extra at bat.

by fwoty oz on Aug 7, 2009 4:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Offensively, Rios was kind of a dud for his position in ‘08, and it wasn’t because he had bad BABIP luck.
And I’m still of the belief that the WAR coming from defense isn’t predictive. It’s like wanting to claim Rios because he hit .450 with the bases loaded in ‘08 — yes, that had value, but you can’t count on it going forward. If UZR had even a mild swing from year to year, like batting average, maybe I’d think differently.
by Grant on Aug 7, 2009 5:51 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Nate has five strikeouts for every walk and not nearly enough power to get away with that. I don’t think Nate has a good chance to be a starting-calibre player, let alone an above-average one like Rios.
by onlxn on Aug 7, 2009 5:36 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I don’t think it’s a stretch to predict Nate for a couple .291/.337/.461 seasons. Every single projection system — PECOTA to ZiPS to CHONE to Oliver to Bill James — projected him for that or a little better this year, much less his peak years.
And the people who aren’t afraid to take UZR as a predictive tool should love Schierholtz — in 770+ innings, his UZR/150 is 21.7, which is elite Rios territory.
by Grant on Aug 7, 2009 5:59 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
All of those projections involved Nate getting a tick better in terms of plate discipline. Instead, he’s gotten a tick worse. He’s gotten right around a third of a season’s worth of plate appearances, so triple his numbers — how many viable hitters do you know who have 24 walks and 120 strikeouts on a year? Wily Mo Pena types can occasionally slug their way into being useful despite numbers like that… Nate ain’t that kind of slugger. Small sample size, sure. But you don’t need huge samples to get a sense of a guy’s plate discipline.
Nate’s current hitting approach is untenable. He may be able to fix it. But he’s 25, and a guy that almost nobody, outside of rabid Giants fans, has seen as being starter-level potential. Let’s don’t fall in love with this guy just yet — a young ’un with an empty .290 average is no better than an old ’un with an empty .290 average.
by onlxn on Aug 7, 2009 7:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Sure he doesn’t have great discipline, but most his at-bats to start the year were inconsistent. Maybe with more of his regular at-bats he’s getting lately, he might improve.

Let’s face it, when Sabean was stupid enough to contemplate Lincecum for Rios, he made it pretty clear that he was a big Rios fan. He makes the most sense for us, and it’s a very realistic possibility that we’re the team that made the claim. Of course that doesn’t mean that just because he fits with us better than with anyone else, that another GM didn’t put in the claim ahead of us.

This is like brand name vs. generic brand
Nate will give us the same production for a cheap cheap price. Everyone is going gaga for Rios b/c of that breakout season he had couple years ago.
If this offseason was any indication, corner outfielders are a cheap commodity. Why overpay for an average player. You invest that kind of money in a middle of the lineup hitter with some pop.
How many times have we complained we can’t get someone good b/c of the Zito’s contract? We’ll have 2 contracts like that, and we will be getting very average production from those two. Save the money for the offseason and either go after someone worthwhile or invest it in our own players.

I'm just very hesitant about spending that kind of money on a very average OF.
The 28-year-old Rios is batting .261 with 12 homers and 58 RBIs this season. He has never had an OPS higher than .865, and currently has an OPS of .728.
Rios is making $5.9 million this season, and he is set to earn salaries of $9.7 million in 2010, $12 million in 2011, $12 million in 2012, $12.5 million in 2013 and $12.5 million in 2014.
The Jays hold a club option on Rios of $13.5 million for 2015, with a $1 million buyout.
There are players worth spending money on and Rios is not one of them. I’ve been burned by Giants being saddled with very bad contracts, which the Giants always point out when they can’t get a player.

Rios would be nice if he was signed only through 2010 or 11, but to tie us down for 5.33 years is just insane. Even before this season, the Jays have been desperate to get rid of this contract, and they thought that they would contend for the pennant this year, so why should we take it on? We should learn our lesson with the Zito and Rowand long-term deals and move on. Besides, the salaries for all veteran non-superstar players will continue to drop after this season. No players other than the superstars are getting contracts for > 3 years, and Rios is not, and has never been, a superstar. Why do you think young prospects are in such demand? All but the biggest market teams will continue to dump salary in the offseason. Did you just see the report that Cleveland will lose > $10M this year? That won’t be a one-off deal this year.

I generally agree, but context is important here.
1) This winter’s free agency crop is terrible, almost historically so. If Rios were a free agent this winter, I guarantee you he’d make even more than his current contract calls for, just because he’s head-and-shoulders better than everyone else on the market. If you want a solid good player under the age of 32 this winter, you’ll have to trade for one.
2) Teams that are dumping salary are demanding prospects in return, as we recently became aware.
3) Waivers are therefore the only way to add a pretty good player without giving up talent in return.
I’m not saying I’d love our trying to claim… I can just at least make an argument for it. We want to compete in these next couple years, and we’re probably one outfielder short, at least, if we want to do that. Rios should fill a slot well for a couple years. He may well tail off towards the end of this contract, but the raises in it aren’t steep… if free agency normalizes once the economy does, the tail end of his contract shouldn’t be backbreaking.
It’s not a no-brainer. Our funds are not limitless, and if this would make keeping Timmy and Cain harder, then forget it. But we need some more talent, and free agency isn’t going to give it to us anytime soon. This might – might – be worth the risk.
by onlxn on Aug 7, 2009 3:56 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
Good points
I do agree that he’d get a bit more per season if he was a FA this offseason, but I strongly disagree that he’d get a 5 year deal (unless he was willing to sign for less than $8M per year). I think the most he would be get would be 3 years (with a possible club option for a 4th year), and rightly so, since he’s not enough of a difference-maker to command longer terms. This winter’s FA crop is poor, but not at the top end for OF’s. Jason Bay and Matt Holliday (and possibly ManRam) will get top $$ and years, and Rios would be left fighting over a mid-level contract with the likes of Nady, Abreu, Mike Cameron, and Johnny Damon.

because Rios has established himself in the majors already, a guy who can steal bases, hit for decent power, and play a good OF. Isn’t this pretty much Nate’s ceiling? Yeah, his stats look pretty good this year, but (1) SSS, and (2) The book on him has yet to be made for pitchers. I think an absolute best-case scenario for Nate would be Rios’s career averages. Plus, like jctGamer said, he’s developed in the Giants’ farm system, which has a tough time producing good hitters with plate discipline.
Would it be a big contract? There’s no doubting that. But $9-12 million is not unreasonable for an above average player, which is what Rios is. This conversation, to me, is the epitomy of Giants fans overvaluing prospects in relation to established players.

One of the players I’ll always gamble on is Alex Rios. Not because of his numbers, but because of the following story: Back in 2003 when he was playing for Caguas in the Puerto Rican winter league, Rios had a day off. In the late innings of a close game, he plopped down in the dugout with a giant hunk of chocolate cake and, to wash it down, a two-liter of warm Pepsi. Rios had just about finished this meal when his teammates loaded the bases and his manager called him up to pinch-hit. Rios burped, grabbed a bat, put on a helmet, burped some more, walked to the plate and cracked a double. For some reason, this makes me want him on my team.

You're wrong
The player’s contract is still wholly valid. If Rios has a full no-trade clause then he could scuttle the deal at any time before he reports to the new team. Also, his no-trade clause would follow him to the new team – another reason tor us not to want him.

Rios, wtf?
How did he get such a huge contract. Offensively, in the AL, he has had 2, two, too, to, only 2 years over .800 OPS. His best HR year is also the only time he’s hit more than 20, and that was a total of 24. His OBP has never been great.
So…how did this happen? I know his defense is good, but defense plus avg offense is not worth $60 million. Looking at his stats I don’t see ANYTHING that stands out as a better than average player.
Can someone explain?

Rios vs. Rowand
and the more I look at it, Rios and Rowand have extremely similar numbers:
Alex Rios career: .285/.335/.449
Aaron Rowand career: .283/.342/.452
Add to that the fact that Rios steals bases and is 4 years younger. How on earth did we end up paying Rowand so much money? Especially when we all think Rios is overpriced…

by positiveuphemism on Aug 7, 2009 3:39 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
He’s been worth more (and considerably so on occasion) than his contract is paying him for the last three years.
$12M is equivalent to a 2.5 WAR player & Rios has been worth 3.3, 4.6 and 5.5 WAR the last three seasons. So it’s pretty easy to see why he was given such a large contract.

by positiveuphemism on Aug 7, 2009 3:52 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
I’m pretty skeptical about the whole thing for a number of reasons:
a) We’re very low in the pecking order for him & so there’s a decent chance the team is someone higher than us.
b) As much as Toronto may be happy to get rid of his contract, i’m very doubtful that they’ll let him leave for nothing.
c) Baggs apparently enquired about whether we’d be interested in Rios and was told that the money would be prohibative.
If it is true then i’m fine with claiming him and taking his contract if they decide to just him go (very doubtful) but i wouldn’t be interested in trading anything for him.
Proud parent of Waldis Joaquin!
by GiantFan on Aug 7, 2009 3:32 PM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I would be… okay with this, I think? No better than okay, but okay.
1) If you’ve been looking for the guy who still doesn’t believe in Nate, you found him! It’s me! Eight walks + forty strikeouts + middling power /= starting corner outfielder. No hate, Nate, but we can and should do better.
2) The pickings in free agency this winter are hideously assy.
We’re clearly looking to compete next year and thereafter… we’ll probably need at least one more solid outfielder to do that, and that won’t be easy to find. I wouldn’t love to take on a big contract for a non-impact bat, and the last couple years might be ugly, but there’s a fit here.
Probably not us anyway, but if it is, fair enough. We entered a competitive window faster than we expected to. I’d be okay with the organization taking big steps to acknowledge that.

the White Sox gets Rowand for nothing? Hehehe. Plus, Rowand would have to clear waivers too.

Maybe he has
Hmmmm….
The White Sox wouldn’t get Rowand for nothing, I think that contract comes along with him. ;)

Wow
Also, because Rios is signed for another $60 million through 2013,
I can’t believe that Schulman made the mistake of getting Rios’s contract terms wrong. To set the record straight, Rios is signed through 2014, for another ~ $61.7M. I thought it was only us bloggers typing away in our parent’s basement in our pj’s that made simple mistakes like that!

Do not want
Rios will make this team worse this season unless Sabean trades Molina for him.

i suggest we go with a "no catcher" approach
and just put the backstop closer in. all hitters do is swing and miss and our stuff anyways!

You’re just dumb if you think that. How does a league-average OF at worst make this a worse team?

I’d love it if the A’s claimed him. It would be the perfect capper to a season where nothing they’ve done has made any sense whatsoever.

A 2nd team has put in a claim on Rios
Buster Olney just reported on ESPN that a 2nd team has claimed Rios now! LOL – in the same conversation Eddie Perez stated that the Jays will ask for a bunch of prospects for Rios. Olney looked almost incredulous because he had just made the case for the Jays being lucky just to shed the contract, and that Rios was hugely overpaid for his position considering the recent contracts for OF’s.

Eduardo Perez!
LOL x 2! In the midnight broadcast (9 on the west coast) Perez repeated his shameless plugging for the greatness of Rios. He once again stated the Jays should get players back in a trade, and that “the sky’s the limit” for Rios and his career.

I forgot to add that Olney and Orestes Destrada both stated that it was a horrible contract and that the Jays sould be glad just to get rid of Rios – the money saved could be used to make a run at re-signing Halladay.

Asked a friend of mine who is a huge Jays fan (and worked for them at one point) what would the fan base do if they got rid of him for nothing. Her reaction? “Eh. No one cares much at this point, since we had our hearts ripped out already by April and May and Halliday and we’ve all wanted Riccardi out anyway, so anything he does now is just gravy on his grave.”
There’s another, more interesting point that hasn’t been raised here.
If Riccardi does pull the trigger and dump this contract to the White Sox – which he should – would the White Sox in turn try to move Dye? That’s where I think the Giants are more likely to come in…

If-if-the White Sox claim Rios he will likely play center for them. It doesn’t make a lot of sense for them to dump Dye for nothing when they have DeWayne Wise starting in the OF. And if Dye is DFA’d we still be 3rd to last in line to get him. I just hope we claimed Rios and nobody else did.
