Shawon Dunston: Enemy of the Walk

So reading a Sports Illustrated article about how walks are the enemy with Pablo Sandoval as exhibit A, an interesting quote from our infield coach Shawon Dunston came up...

"You want to see a walk? Then go watch the mailman."

This man is in the dugout during games, mentoring young players, giving advice about NOT taking walks.  We all thought it was Carney's fault, but it's pretty glaringly clear that the problem here might be Dunston's philosophy (and his .296 career OBP).  Thoughts?

It's part of it....

but really it’s the organization as a whole, if they gave a damn about that type of approach to the plate ,they would hire different coaches. I’m sure it’s the same way on the lower levels, where coaches probably have a bigger impact on players

This is my basic issue

I don;’t think the org recognizes it – the whole attitude is “aggressive” hitting, rather than “intelligent” hitting.

It starts at the top

Sabean bears the ultimate responsibility for this, because he approves/hires the coaches and signs/trades for the players. It’s obvious this won’t change until Sabean is gone. The Giants have always been bad at this during Sabean’s reign, if not for Bonds and 1 or 2 others bringing their patient eyes with them from their original teams we’d have been abominable. I pray that Neukom doesn’t get sucked-in by our current surprising results and extend Sabean’s contract in the offseason (for this and many other reasons).

The saddest part about it is that our hitters have been so unsuccesful hitting for average or slugging while not being selective. If not for Panda we’d have the worst offense in the league for each of the past 3 years. If you’re not doing well swinging at every pitch, wouldn’t anybody with half a brain try the opposite approach, if only to see if it helps? Even if you don’t care about trying to help the team out by tiring out the opposing pitcher quicker and letting your teammates see more pitches, wouldn’t you want to do something different to improve your own stats if only to help yourself get a better salary?

“In the Giants’ clubhouse, meanwhile, the debate rages over walks versus hits, on-base percentage versus batting average. Lansford wants his hitters to be selective, to wear out pitchers. Dunston wants them aggressive.”

I like being aggressive in certain situations, but being aggressive should not mean that you’ve decided to swing before you see the pitch. It does not mean that in double play situations with a sinkerballer on the mound you go up hacking at the first pitch no matter what it is (likely to be a sinker tailored to induce a GIDP). It doesn’t mean swinging 3-0 or just swinging at the first pitch, especially when you’re facing a guy you’ve never faced before.

Aggressiveness needs to be dictated by the game situation (including the count) the hitter and the pitcher on the mound. It means when the count is 3-1 or 2-0, you sit fastball and if you get it, take a huge rip. it doesn’t mean that you swing 3-1 or 2-0 no matter what the pitch is. It means that if Daniel Cabrera has walked 6 guys in a row without throwing a strike, you don’t go up hacking at the first pitch, BENGIE.

I’m simply amazed at this team’s lack of plate discipline. I’ve never seen anything like it in 20+ years of watching the Giants and baseball in general. But it’s not just lack of discipline. It’s the utter contempt for it.

For a team that needs to rely on situational baseball to win games, this team sure does a horrible job at the most fundamental aspect of it.

Bonds stands alone.

I agree your approach should change depending on the situation. In RBI situations, I think some players around baseball are too selective – sometimes its good to jump on the first good pitch instead of hitting fouls and walking. Generally I think patience and discipline are very important though, and you have a good point about facing unknown pitchers.

I really wonder what some hitters’ approaches are. I’ve seen garko come up sometimes, take a fastball down the pipe, then swing at a breaker in the dirt off the outside.

Well, no wonder...

With 2 coaches preaching completely opposite approaches the Giants hitters are probably confused as hell.
Duston needs to gtfo. I blame Bochy for allowing this in the clubhouse.

D-Backs have the new mantra “organizational advocacy”. A big part of that is having consistency of message from top to bottom of the organization. I know “organizational advocacy” sounds really dumb – that is until one looks at the Giants and sees exactly what a club without a plan looks like.

So, I guess it’s really the Giant’s front office to blame. I’m not even ready to blame Sabean here: I think this comes from lack of consistency even higher up in the organization .

Giants supposedly have the same thing. That’s why they published that Giants Way book, so that every player in every level of the system would be getting the same message, same terminology, same exercises.

"Published a book"?

Got a cite? I know Bill Neukom was talking about “The Giants Way,” but hadn’t heard that they had produced a book, let alone published it. Also, that would have been THIS YEAR.

Also, obviously, even if such an actual book were actually produced, it would have been this year, so its effect so far throughout the system would be nearly non-existent. Also, I think it is obvious that day-to-day coaching has way more impact than some book.

Thing is

Walking/not walking is probably one of the few things in baseball you CAN just decide to change. If a player gets up there and thinks “I’m looking to put the ball in play” chances are, unless the pitcher is wild as hell, he’s gonna either K or put the ball in play.

Instead, if the player goes up there thinking “I’m looking for the right pitch to drive, and if I don’t get it – I’m 100% happy with the walk” they are going to be much more likely to let pitchers pitches go by.

And yeah – they may strike out a little more – but if the culture is that it is okay to strike out more if you are walking more (which it is) then that doesn’t matter.

by FairweatherFan on Aug 6, 2009 3:02 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

And

If a coach does tell a youngish player “get that bat off your shoulder, be more aggressive out there” I can assure you that has an effect.

And that pretty much sounds like what he is saying – which is really too bad.

He said that getting a bunch of walks is "cheating the game."

I can’t recall the source, but it was about 2 weeks ago, and that’s why the “cheating the game” meme started in some of the gameday threads.

If I were the GM, I would fire his ass and basically everyone who hasn’t gotten the religion about #P/PA and OBP, and one of the managerial techniques I liked in ‘Moneyball’ was creating and enforcing an institutional expectation throughout the minors that players were expected to walk at least once per 10 PA. That can only happen if the coaching is consistent and unified.

There is an undeniable correlation between #P/PA and success as a hitter. It’s not superstition or exotic cultural tales anymore. There is a straight line from our hacksloppery — oh, no, please forgive me, I mean AGGRESSIVENESS — to crappy run production, letting the other team’s SP go deeper into games against us, etc. This is the thing that pisses me off the most about our team because, as Fairweather Fan points out, it IS controllable. GRRRRRRRR. Dammit.

In poker it's "tight agressive" that gets the money.

That means, wait for a situation where the odds are in your favor and then be as aggressive a possible.
Barry Bonds was the ultimate “tight aggressive (stone killer)” hitter.

Poker players who are called “loose aggressive” are losers. These are the players who use aggression regardless of the situation. Bengie Molina is possible the most “loose aggressive (maniac)” hitter in baseball.
