Oakland A's fan getting tazed by police who are, at the same time, knocking innocent bystanders down stairs.
At least he didn't get shot in the back. Is it necessary for police to gang up on a belligerent drunk and taze him?

Okay no that was completely unnecessary. Looked like he was resisting arrest, but he wasn’t acting violent towards anyone.

I was there. It was definitely interesting seeing that at a ballgame. More exciting than what was happening on the field though, that’s for sure.

That was awful. I mean he was being a douche but that’s no reason to taze him, damn.

Did any of you read the description?
In all fairness to the OPD: there’s a ramp-up that you don’t see on the tape. Even though the guy shows his ticket, I don’t think that’s his seat. He came over a little earlier, super drunk. He wasn’t angry really, just obnoxious – hollering and making a scene. He was downing all these little bottles of vodka, and started harassing the kids behind him. A’s security came to check him out when he started yelling profanities.
When security told him to cool it, he got really belligerent. Started using racial epithets at the guards, etc. They told him to leave. He refused. They called in the cops. You see the rest of it.
Whether or not the tazing was necessary/appropriate, people will certainly disagree. The one thing I can tell you for sure is that this guy had no intention of leaving calmly on his own.
Sure, the bystander didn’t deserve getting shoved, but come on.
Insanity is just a state of mind.

3 cops were on hand and so was a handful of security. You mean all of them couldn’t drag him out? You see it all the time in this place. Tazing a guy in the back should have been a last resort.

+1
Tazering is considered “non-lethal” but it can be rather aggressive. Tazer guns give police a false since of power they shouldn’t have

Tasering is responsible for a not-significant number of deaths in the US per year.

Umm, if they had tried to pull him out, they would’ve been sued for “beating” or “abuse” or whatever the man wanted. And in our sue-happy society, he would’ve won.

the heat seeking foul ball was a nice bonus…
Seriously though, there’s a hand full of seconds that elapse between the first taser shot that failed and the final zap to the back. The cop that was monkeying around with his toy could have, instead, assisted the other officers in restraining him.
Too bad the cops watching the parking lots lack this enthusiasm.

That foul ball that almost hit the SAME guy that was pushed down the stairs is pretty crazy

I know some A's fans that deserve tazing as well, but for different reasons....
I might be in the minority on this point of view here, but when a cop says move, you should move, and you definitely shouldn’t mouth off (I had a client that got himself and his girlfriend tazed and beaten by several cops for telling one of them to fuck himself after being told to go inside a bar…10-15 minutes later and without further provocation. They were both left with permanent scars and injuries.)
If you don’t and you’re an asshole about it, you really shouldn’t be surprised if something bad happens to you, even if you are totally 100% right in the first instance. As we’ve all seen, cops can lose it (and/or make mistakes) and you don’t want to be the instigator if/when they go bezerk. It simply isn’t worth it.

Defently do what a cop asks, but to not do it (and not putting anyone in harms way while not doing it) doesn’t give a cop a right to harm you

I agree, but to be fair, lots of cops know fellow officers who are injured or killed in seemingly benign situations. I know someone who died at a routine traffic stop – pulled over a drug dealer and didn’t know it. So they approach every situation like it’s potentially lethal. Which is why you should shut up, be polite and generally do what they say.

Quick question...
What are the effects of being tazed? Are there any long-term effects?

It depends on where they strike you, as well.
by SoFa King Mike on Aug 6, 2009 1:48 PM PDT up reply actions 0 recs
No long term effects. In most cities, they make police officers get tazed before they can be issued one so they know the real-life effects. My friend went through it, she said it does suck real bad but she felt normal within a few minutes

The Oakland PD did not need this on the heels of the Bart shooting
However I am a firm believer of “do what the police told you to do.”
Think about it in this case, what if the Police tried to remove him by force and was punched in the eye and lost vision? Would we be contemplating “boy they should have just tazed him?”

the guy who got shoved
was the victim of the “ghost” shove ala manu ginobili. when everyone was told to move away he walks right up to the situation with a camera to the guys face. police put a hand on him to back up, a’s staff gets between them and the guy pulls the staff member back with him to sell the shove. best part is when he yells “dont push me!” a fan goes to brace him and he actually does lose him balance over him and almost falls lol
as for the police, the one that tazed him was acting definitely doing that on his own because the current of it passes perfectly to anyone touching the person whom the needles hit. the other officers at the time were trying to cuff him and im sure were like wtf u doing to the officer in the back. you can see them take a few steps back right away. so yah its that officers bad

I wouldn’t call $69k starting to be an oakland cop “paid out the ass”. Thats what the recruiting sign on 880 said at least

How many jobs start you out at $69K, though? How many people working can expect to see that kind of yearly salary?

I’m not saying the duties aren’t worth the money. But looking at $69K from my perspective, that looks like a heck of a lot of money.

Have you driven around Oakland much? Maybe a wrong turn onto international blvd or san pablo by accident? And those aren’t the worst areas. Any job that requires a bulletproof vest and getting out of the car in that area should pay a lot more than $69k. Garbage men make that and barely have to get out of the truck anymore

Yeha, but garbagemen have to go there to and they don’t get any vests.

oakland pd does not normally accept anyone fresh out the academy. typically its transfers from other police departments. so yes its a starting salary but its meant for officers with 3 plus years of experience.
