Post-Game Recap: Whiteside Blind Sides Astros

What? I'm allowed to write a hacky headline every so often.

If you've visited this site for a while, you're probably aware that I'm not the most statistically savvy blogger in the world. I respect how it feels to be drunk on stats power, sure, but I'm not sure how to crunch my own numbers. So if I write something like, "Doesn't it seem like adding a couple extra major league hitters take this lineup from historically awful to just a tick below average?", please excuse the unanswered question. I don't really know how to make that anything more than a rhetorical question.

But doesn't it seem like adding a couple extra major league hitters take this lineup from historically awful to just a tick below average?

Eh, Martinez was okay

Not sure if he should get another start; that being said, I don’t think our other options are particularly good either.

I know it sounds crazy, but given the “win-now” edict, I’m not sure if Ramon Ortiz isn’t a-not-awful-idea-even-though-he-sounds like it. His upside is 4th SP performance, but an ERA+ of 85-90 at the 5th slot? I’d take it.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

right

That’s a fair point no doubt. But his performance in AAA has been very impressive, and blocking Joey (good story aside) doesn’t seem to be a big deal for me; I’m not a believer.

What was impressive about Martinez today is not the stat line; borderline quality start, nothing special. it was the way he got there, the way he got hit early, pulled himself together, kept us in the game. Sadowsky either pitched great or lousy. Sanchez would give us three good innings then fall apart. Joey battled. Nice to see.

5 IP, 0 BB, 4 K. That’s good. Sure he allowed 3 ER, but the peripherals were good, and maybe the defense gets a couple of those hits next time. The hits just came too close together.

I think the improved offense is a combination of adding two good hitters and finally having some underperforming hitters pulling their weight.

Here are the Giants’ OPS in August. Small sample size, but still encouraging.

Velez .760
Sanchez 1.029
Panda 1.261
Garko 1.101
Rowand .883
Renteria .789

Only Winn is below average at .529.

I think a Sanchez, Panda and Garko 3-4-5 can actually be pretty formidable.

IMO our offense has a chance to be close to MLB average with some minor lineup changes.

"A different pitcher, thank God," Dunn said. "When I got ahead in the count, I was looking for something that I could drive. But when I got to 3-2, again, I had no idea what was coming. He’s got a really good cutter-slider and a really good heater, so I just swung."

He just swung, explains the mass strikeouts and infrequently – opposite field homers.

Win the inning.

Improving the offense

I don’t think that Garko and Sanchez have elevated the offense from historically bad to near-average; in fact, the offense had a pretty league-average stretch going for about a month going into the All-Star break (4.7 runs/game over the period from June 14-July 12). Then they had a really awful couple of weeks that reminded us all of their appalling April/May offensive production (under 4 runs/game).

Now they’re bouncing back again. Sanchez and Garko have something to do with that, sure, but a lot of it is just a return to form.

Wow, I never heard about Dock Ellis until now

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dock_Ellis

There’s some crazy stuff including a no hitter thrown while on LSD and this

Attempting to hit every batter in the Cincinnati Reds lineup on May 1, 1974. In an effort to prove a point to teammates, Ellis hit Pete Rose, Joe Morgan, and Dan Driessen in the top of the first. The clean-up batter Tony Perez avoided Ellis’ attempts, instead drawing a walk, and after two pitches aimed at the head of Johnny Bench, Ellis was removed from the game by manager Danny Murtaugh. Ellis’ box score for the game reads: 0 IP, 0 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 0 K.5

Good News: We win!

Bad news: Winn, Molina, & Renteria are all OPSing under .700 (Renteria .629) and two of them continue to hit in the first 4 spots of the order. Bochy will not sit any of them (or in Molina’s case move him down) and Winn and Renteria haven’t homered months.

More Bowker, Nate (when he returns) & Uribe please. DL Renteria if he is hurt, why does this organization refuse to put these guys on the DL when they are not contributing?

by sfgreg on Aug 5, 2009 7:24 PM PDT reply actions

Aurilia was DL’d….but if a guy can play, even play hurt, I can see why they’ll let him play. It would be nice, though, if they rested Winn and Renteria more while they are playing hurt or ineffective.

I know, I know. But, Velez played another ball of the wall horribly again as he did in the first game of the series (I believe). 2nd inning and Velez is still waiting at the base of the wall on a ball that is either going to hit high off of it or go out. For whatever reason he thinks the ball should drop straight down if it hits the wall and not ricochet away. Who is our OF coach? Flannery?
