Matt Cain for Fielder!!!!!!!!!!

by DINGERS.EXE on Aug 5, 2009 12:40 PM PDT reply actions

well, yeah, no doubt...

but how does this verify that statement? he’s just saying what’s par for the course these days, every team plays the retaliation game.

I actually agree with him. It’s been handled that way in baseball since it’s inception.

You people wit' the cheese. It never ends.

If anything, he should be pissed at his pitcher for exposing him to that kind of thing. If the ball isn’t up near head level, take your beaning like a man and nurse a grudge against the Dodgers.
Fielder is apparently a big baby… and I mean big. Having a rich and famous dad will do that sometimes.

And things that have been around a long time are ALWAYS right. Fuck that. Intentionally throwing at a person is bullshit. And I’m frankly surprised that more people haven’t said it.

Absolutely right

It is not only “macho” bullshit to hit someone, it is unstrategic and hurts yourself or your team more than the other side. BRILLIANT to put an opponent on base for free. And it now puts your own teammates at risk from the other side’s pitcher. Stupid. Childish.

Nice Dodger-defending folks. Why Martin is an idiot and can suck it, however:

  • Calling his teammate “Our premier hitter”, like he’s writing an article for the New Yorker or something.
  • Telling Prince Fielder when he is and isn’t allowed to get angry, in the baseball rules according to Russell Martin (“I understand (Fielder) is frustrated, but you don’t take care of that after the game.”)
  • “We don’t want to be known as a team that doesn’t have each other’s backs.” Is stupid too. Either they are a team that has each other’s backs, or a team that doesn’t (or, more realistically, they are somewhere in between). Why is he all freaked about what the Brewers think. Who cares what the Brewers think.
  • Yeah it’s common for one team to drill another team’s guy in retaliation, whatever, cool. But I think that that mostly holds when the first beaning was seemingly on-purpose. Getting revenge for a ball that just got away from a pitcher, which is what seems to have happened in this case, seems stupid to me, a setup for endless escalation until one team chills out. And for Russell to come right out and say it was on purpose when the first beaning wasn’t makes him seem like a grade A ass.
  • I’ve sat through so many single-pitch intentional walks to Barry Bonds that the Giants didn’t do anything about in response, where the attitude seemed to be “wellllll …. OK, assholes, I guess that could have been an accident …. but, ummm, thanks for putting him on base (again)., and maybe let’s just get on with the game …” that the whole retaliation thing, even when “justified”, falls a li’l flat with me.

I agree.

And the Dodgers wouldn’t sound so tough if Fielder actually beat the crap out of their players. Then the Bums could cry like little babies.

Also, obligatory, “SUCK IT, RUSSEL MARTIN!”

by DINGERS.EXE on Aug 5, 2009 2:29 PM PDT up reply actions

Baseball etiquette is stupid but well-established

Martin seems to be right in line with years of beanball wars.

And as far as intentional, it can be a pretty fine line between plunking a guy and throwing inside to keep him off the plate. Its one aspect of the game that players still largely have to police themselives I guess.

My opinion is heavily influenced, possibly dictated, by listening to Kruk explain it over the years. I hate the process but its not totally irrational.

by Stoned Slacker on Aug 5, 2009 3:21 PM PDT up reply actions

It’s not irrational, but it doesn’t deserve to be apologized for. It’s dumb as shit, and no amount of tradition or rationalization changes that.

also

the whole “it would be 25 vs. 1” thing. Apparently though (suck it) Russel Martin is familiar with the “etiquette” of the beanball, he’s never seen a bench clearing brawl.

Mota is a jerk, too. I remember him drilling Mike Piazza in a pre season game and then sneaking out of the stadium when Piazza went looking for him later.

but didn’t piazza put him in a headlock or something?

how good is the giants' starting rotation? our rotation is so good, our 5th starters throw no-hitters. uh.

I wish Fielder would’ve charged the mound.
