Top Three Trades That Didn't Happen at the Deadline

          3. Felipe Paulino to the Rockies for Brad Hawpe

Man, I would have loved if the Rockies had Paulino for the four-game series at the end of the month.

          2. Felipe Paulino to the Padres for Kyle Blanks.

Man, it would be awesome if Paulino were on the Padres. There are still six games against the Padres. Also, man-beast Blanks would be out of the division.

         1. Felipe Paulino to the Dodgers for Matt Kemp, Clayton Kershaw, and $125M

Man, it would be awesome if Felipe Paulino were on the Dodgers for the rest of the season. It would be just as awesome to have the young core of the Dodgers on another team as they filed for bankruptcy.

Sorry, Felipe. But as the only pitcher to struggle twice against the Giants in once season, you're pretty danged impressive. Other teams should give you a whirl, and they should do so in the heat of a pennant race.

Also of note: When Jonathan Sanchez is on, it's a pretty thing to watch.

(Actually, this is just a post-game thread, but I'm not above a little Google/Yahoo whoring...)

no doubt he has a lot of pride and he should. I’m glad that he had a big game tonight. He’s long overdue for one. I can relax on the Bengie hate for one night, but the overall situation hasn’t changed just b/c he had one good game.

But we should enjoy this one for now.

yup

he’s a bad player. That doesnt make him a bad person, but its not unfair to blame him for 1) not showing any plate discipline 2) not making any effort to get into shape.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

by Aadik on Aug 4, 2009 9:44 PM PDT up reply actions

In shape, yes. No plate discipline, no.

He learned this approach, was probably coached in it, and has had success with it. The Giants signed him knowing what he was. If they think he’s going to magically start showing plate discipline for the first time in his life as a 30-something major league catcher, they’re idiots. And so are fans if they likewise expect it.

Still the loving, adoptive father of Hector Sanchez. And who doesn't love switch-hitting catchers with power and patience?

so when computers are integrated into schools, you wouldn’t be upset with a 50-year old teacher that refused to learn how to use one just because they have never tried it?

You need to continually improve your game if you want to stay in the pros. Being old is not an excuse.

by UnleashTheGore on Aug 5, 2009 8:16 AM PDT up reply actions

I’m not saying he couldn’t be better. But why should he try to reinvent himself at the twilight of his career when he’s been successful (by the traditional measures he’s been raised with and evaluated by to this point) with his existing style?

By the way, I’m not arguing that he’s right – I’m just saying it’s understandable and the criticism he’s gotten for it is a bit over the top.

maybe

but how hard would it be to just decide that every third AB, he’s going to wait until they throw him a called strike? maybe I’m oversimplifying things, but it seems like that would help a lot.

Not trading Sanchez might be the biggest non-deal.

Since he’s rejoined the rotation he’s pitched 32.2 innings given up 10 ER on 16 hits and 10 BB while racking up 39 strikeouts. During that time period, Sanchez sports a 2.76 ERA, a .83 WHIP, 10.7 K/p inn and 3.5 K/BB.

More please!

nah

you pay 60/month for 5 months, you get sunday ticket and the top package thingy. You can even get a free hd dvr if you want, but then you HAVE to keep HD AND DVR service for 2 full years (16/month), in addition to a programming package that’s at least 30/month. So, from what I understand, it’s something like 50-55 bucks a month for 2 years. I could be wrong though.

the pats are the dodgers of the NFL, but without the legit rivalry reason to hate them. I just hate them. Bunch of fucking cheaters. Watch them closely during games- they are the dirtiest players in the league, and that’s why they’re so successful. They coach a dirty style and coach how to keep it hidden from the refs.

I’m just saying, I hate it when people call these guys ‘greedy,’ with those censorious overtones. It’s a market economy, they have a chance to cash in. The NFL thing just bugs me. (And maybe that’s cuz Mr. Merope is a Bengals fan. I’ve watched that team spend big money on draft picks only for them to fail miserably.) Well the Players Union or someone will step up and say something because they are more players getting screwed by the rookie pay scale then there are getting helped by it. Though I seem to remember the NBA rookie contracts being a lot longer and I understand the NFL can’t do that because of the violent nature of the sport.

Um, no. Think about this way: even USC only has maybe six or eight guys who are good enough to even play in the NFL. The worst NFL players were stars on college teams (that’s how they got drafted, after all), and they’ve been doing little else but practicing football since then.

Or maybe I just fell in the chasm.

that the 2004 trojans would have beaten the 2004 49ers. I know it’s not a definite thing, but my point is that as long as the level of football is at least acceptable, people will watch replacement players. They don’t NEED to see stars in the NFL

It’s not only about talent. USC lost to stanford AT HOME when they were favored by 50 points. Well coached, fairly talented teams can beat teams that are individually more talented but lack the ability to play together, especially in football. It’s not at all a stupid argument. When you’re drafting Derrius Heyward-Bey and Rashaun Woods in the 1st round, I don’t care if you’re in the NFL, your team sucks.

by cloudydays on Aug 4, 2009 10:56 PM PDT up reply actions

KEVAN BARLOW??????

Um, no. And everyone knows the impact a good FB can have on a team… Arnaz Battle is a 4th WR on a DECENT team, same with Brandon Lloyd. If that’s your 2 starters you’re in serious trouble.

You know how I know how terrible that team was? Because after those players were purged by Mike Nolan, no other team wanted them. For whatever reason Lloyd got a ridiculous contract and SUCKED in washington. Barlow couldn’t even get a job as a 3rd-stringer. Every single player on defense other than young and Peterson were AWFUL, like division 2 college awful. Mike adams? Mike Rumph? Ben emmanuel? Seriously?

The Lions had Paris Lenon, Calvin Johnson, Kevin Smith, Dominc Riola, etc. They were terrible, sure. But they had players that were fun to watch.

The 49ers had NOTHING that was worth watching. They needed overtime in both their victories (against the cardinals I might add), and in one of them they needed a miracle 17 yard completion that they would have failed to convert 9 out of 10 times.

I hope it's not too late to mention: Bip Roberts is an idiot

I was taking care of my little son during the game, so I couldn’t hang with you all in the Gameday Thread, but I caught a bit of the 9th inning, and when Ay-yoo-hay-knee-oh made that TOTALLY DUMBASS choice to dive for a ball he was going to miss rather than pull up and hold the mf’er to a single, Bip said that was a great move to go for it, and said that pitchers will really appreciate that you’re out there trying to bust his butt.

You know what? I would bet that every pitcher would really prefer that fielders make smart choices and NOT GIVE AN EXTRA 90 FEET, particularly when if that guy were HELD TO THE SINGLE HE SO RICHLY DESERVED, he would not have scored that inning and the shutout would have been preserved and the rookie’s debut would have been scoreless.

Also Bip is one of those “swing the bat, that’s what it’s for!” flywheels. Can’t Kuip and Flem just do the television and have Jon Miller do the games solo?

Obviously, a top quality person is going to be unavailable. But on a fill-in basis, there’s not an ex-Giant who isn’t an idiot who has some personality and conversational ability? by SFGuy on Aug 4, 2009 11:14 PM PDT up reply actions

In any case, I like Ted, but he is a play by play guy, not the color guy.

I think they want a color guy on these things, but it’s unnecessary. Jon and Flem are play by play guys. Kuip is the rare guy who can do both, but when paired with Krukow, Kuip does play by play and Kruk does the color. So I guess Ted could do play by play on tv while Kuip does color; and that leaves no color guy for radio, which is fine.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by Mayor of 311 on Aug 4, 2009 11:19 PM PDT up reply actions

seriously

This is the way i see it, the giants wanted to put some guy in there that is all the fans know like JT, if you go around the park and ask who FP is hardly anyone will know about him. Bip is just i have no idea… but point is, you can’t expect anyone to fill in there and be GREAT, because look, we’re spoiled with AWESOME commentators both on the radio and on TV, but i see what you are getting at, like what happens in the future

by PiKAgiant on Aug 4, 2009 11:23 PM PDT up reply actions

Well, that's not exactly what I'm getting at.

I am not concerned about the future. Nobody expects anyone GREAT as a fill-in announcer. There are specific jobs in announcing: play by play and color. The ex-players tend to do color, and they have only ever brought in (or needed) substitute color guys. I just can’t believe that the only choices on earth are FP, JT, and Bip. Maybe eventually it will be Aurilia, but in the meantime, there isn’t an ex-Giant with a 3-digit IQ and some conversational ability as a fill-in? I’m not asking for a Jon Miller clone to wait around for 10 days of work per season.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by PiKAgiant on Aug 4, 2009 11:33 PM PDT up reply actions

The Giants should have given Kuiper the series off, too and gone with a simulcast with Miller on TV AND radio.

by SFGuy on Aug 4, 2009 11:34 PM PDT up reply actions

Correct me if i’m wrong… is that what Scully does?

by PiKAgiant on Aug 4, 2009 11:35 PM PDT up reply actions

Part of the game, he does. The other parts are done by Charley Steiner and Rick Monday.

by SFGuy on Aug 4, 2009 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Yes, or go without.

It’s important to have a color guy with the play by play guy on TV, but much less so on radio. Kuip is a rare guy who can do either color or the play by play. So the assignment should be: TV, Kuip does color and either Jon or Flem does play by play (depending on which channel it’s on); and on radio, just Jon or Flem (again, depending on which channel the TV is on for that game). It’s only a handful of games per year, so they could manage.

Forsan et haec olim meminisse iuvabit... Maybe.

by Mayor of 311 on Aug 4, 2009 11:36 PM PDT up reply actions

Nice

Yeah, good thinking there, and you’re right with the assessment of Jon and Flem, they both are play by play guys, since they both never played the game.

by PiKAgiant on Aug 4, 2009 11:38 PM PDT up reply actions

I’m just going to butt in for a moment and suggest that it takes a while to learn a new job. How good were Kruk & Kuip in their early broadcasts? I think FP is better now than he was last year. JT has only done it a few times now. Who knows how good he will be once he has learned the new trade.

On the radio, Miller (I believe) said that is the right situation for Velez to sell out. I disagree (agree with you) that it should have been a No Dives – No Doubles situation regardless if we have a 8 run lead. Especially since there was a pitcher making his MLB debut, and it could have gotten shitty real quick. I mean, give the guy a chance to throw a double-play ball and get out of it unscathed.

Molina said there was absolutely no difference in his approach Tuesday.

"I was doing the same thing earlier," he said. "I was doing it two weeks ago, a month ago, two months ago. Baseball works in funny ways. You hit the ball hard, that’s what you’re supposed to do, and you don’t get hits. It can happen to anybody. It happened to me. Hopefully the hits will all be at the end of the year."

if Bengie isn’t doing anything differently, and Paulino isn’t pitching every game through the end of the season, I stand by the reasoning that the Giants can’t expect jackshit from the cleanup position.

“hoping” for the hits to come because there’s a statistical precedent that indicates he’s underachieving blatantly ignores the fact that he’s established, quite thoroughly, a statistical precedent this year for sucking.

Well, this dude was being drunk and loud stumbling behind my section, then all of a sudden an inning or two later this guy just yells, “That guy is getting tased!”

Literally everyone in all the surrounding sections, and even the deck up from us (we were on field level) stood up and started watching as security was tasing him. They shot him a few times till he hit the ground. Then they took him out in a wheelchair while he was handcuffed and pointing number 1 signs with his hands.

Mind you, this is while the game was going on, literally everyone was standing and facing away from the game, watching this take place.

Russell Martin on ESPN Radio Sportcenter updates...

Talking about last nights dust-up. Apparently Fielder went to the Dodger’s clubhouse to get him a piece o’ Mota.

Ami I the only one who, whenever I heard Martin’s voice or heard his name mentioned, said aloud, “SUCK IT, RUSSELL MARTIN”?

Speaking of Mota

that’s now 2 guys that have gone into his team’s clubhouse to chase him down. Piazza did it once too. Mota is a fucking douche bag pussy.

No mentions of waldis joaquin in this thread

I liked what I see. dude is like a Merkin Valdez that throws strikes. Perfect for a September call up guy.

I am too lazy to look at pfx data for last night. However, it looked to me like all he had was a fastball. A secondary pitch he can throw for strikes would be nice.
