OT: MMORPG's

So back in high school, I used to play FFXI and loved it.  But once I got to college, an MMORPG both hit my wallet and my social life too hard so I quit.  But now that I graduated, have an income, and everyone is gone during the summer, the only thing to fill my time is the 3 hours of Giants game 6 nights a week.  I just bought a new computer off of newegg, and it should be legit, so now I want to get back into online video games.  You guys have any suggestions for what I should play?

It’s an oldie, but a goodie, and it’s still going AFAIK: Diablo II. I love DII:Lord of Destruction and I spent the better part of two and a half years playing it every night after work/school and on the weekends. I’m giddy about Diablo III even as nothing new has been revealed for a few months.

I thought Diablo III was going to come out around last May..

But they still don’t have a release date.

It's Blizzard

They’ll release it whenever they’re done with it, which may be a few years.

yup

sc2 is coming out before d3 and who knows how long that’s gonna take so d3 is probably at least a couple of years away. btw sc2 looks absolutely insanely awesome, I’m super pumped for it.

The simple answer is no

Don’t get involved with any MMOs at all. But if you insist it has to be WoW. It is far and away the best one around. It’s so good now that other MMOs that start are doomed to fail because they can’t make it long enough to stabilize. A new MMO will have a lot of problems and it takes time to get them ironed out. New MMOs get users from WoW who want something different but they get tired of the unpolished game and go back to WoW.

In short, nothing is better than WoW and nothing will be better until Blizzard releases their next MMO in a few years.

But…check out MLB Dugout Heroes. Google it and try that. Free, online, MMO, baseball game. It plays pretty well, too.

by positiveuphemism on Aug 4, 2009 2:30 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

I played WoW when it first came out, while I was still playing FFXI and I didn’t get a good vibe from it. I felt by you could get by too easily with out others. But that was years ago, so they could have changed that. I’ll look into the MLB game tho.

meh

that’s one of the things I like about it actually. You can level without others if you want, but, especially at endgame, if you want the more challenging content/better gear, you have to be able to work effectively with others.

Yes, WOW is a good choice

unless you want to have a life. I was hopelessly addicted for three years. I finally stopped playing, about a year ago, because I was getting bored. Everyone that I had been playing with (people that I knew in the real world) had quit months before. Most were trying the newer MMOs.

What you say about WOW vs. other up-and-comer MMOs is correct. Over the last year and a half, I’ve watched the guys that I work with try three or four of the exciting new MMOs, only to go back to WOW after discovering bugs and problems with the new games.

I’m glad that I kicked the habit, even though I enjoyed the game, especially when I was playing with my Son and friends from work. It was too much of a time sink, I wasn’t getting enough sleep on work nights, I wasn’t spending enough time with my family, etc.

I’ve actually considered trying to get a league going here. I can only play it on my desktop, which is better than my laptop, just not as often used. On the laptop, the extra lag from wireless makes it unplayable. I suspect others would find this frustrating, as well.

I'm enjoying it

so much I didn’t even notice the giants game is two innings in. Only done the basics and played against the computer so far. The computer seems to have an insane BABIP (like .700) and the announcing is screwy (they call every inning the end of the game) but it is still enjoyable

by UnstoppableTurtle on Aug 4, 2009 5:38 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Don't do it. Don't ever do it.

I played world of warcraft for 4 years, finally quit about 2 months ago. I know I am in the very minority because I was part of an semi-elite raiding guild fighting for server firsts. The schedule looked like this :

Work till 6
Rish home for dinner
Raid from 7PM – 12AM
Sleep

And I raided Sunday through Thursday, with Friday night being my only night off really (which was spent playing Magic).

I justified my lifestyle to my wife by using the balance sheet : 15 dollars a month is super cheap for year round entertainment.

In the end, it got extremely cumbersome to drag myself to the computer and trying to stay focused as we slay dragon after dragon, looking for minor upgrade to my online avatar :

During Sunwell, I was the single best equipped hunter on my server. All it took was about 800 hours of work, organizing raids, running a guild (I was the Guild Master), and all the bullshit that came with using a DKP system.

Don’t do it!!!!!!!

Do you feel a void in your life? Since I quit, like once a month I get in the mood to play something like that, and regular RPG’s just aren’t the same.

These are not the droids you are looking for. Once you step back and realize you just wasted 800 hours of your life in 6 months trying to make your e-character a little prettier, its very pointless.

God Forbid I ever do that again. (until Diablo 3, of course)

by jctGamer on Aug 4, 2009 3:25 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I had a good two year run of WoW, and had to force myself to stop playing. Like Azmanz said, regular RPGs just don’t cut it after WoW. Though now I’ve forgotten it enough that I can play Kotor I and II and enjoy it again. I even find I’d rather run Mario Kart races online occasionally than race the computer. Sure, I suck at it, but it’s nice to know I’m not playing against a machine that’s letting me win.

Anyway, before my daughter was born, I had to force myself off World of Warcraft, because it was just a huge time suck. I wasn’t running massive raids, and the few times I tried, it just seemed silly. I remember taking my Tauren hunter into one place, waiting with the rest of the raid for the rest of our team (40, I believe) to show up, and waiting for a good 20 minutes before we got to start the attack. What happens? As soon as I show up, my raptor runs across the area and attacks the boss we’re waiting to attack. With nobody else ready, the boss wiped us out. I didn’t admit to being the one who fucked up, but I swear, I didn’t send my pet to attack, and he was set to defensive mode only! So after re-gathering the group, and running back to the instance, we had to wait longer as people dropped out and we had to get more people together. Then we were finally ready, my big moment in my first massive raid! What do I get to do? I turn on auto-fire, and shut it off when I get a warning from the boss creature. Then I resume firing. Once the boss wiped us out, and everyone was so happy we got him down to 40% health, I said “screw you guys, I’m going offline!” Never did another raid.

One day I realized WoW had no point to it. I run around and gather junk, try to get better gear, level up doing quests that ultimately had no real point, and couldn’t understand why I should keep playing.

And yes… I still miss it. Now I want to get into The Old Republic when it comes out, but I doubt I’ll have the time.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

One of the things I loved about my hunter was that I could often solo an elite enemy, thanks to my pet whooping ass. He was good times.

I’m now going to have to leave this thread, before you make me REALLY want to get into it again.

Oh, fun side story. I haven’t played WoW since before the expansions came out. About a year ago, I got an email from Blizzard saying my account has been reactivated and is upgraded for The Burning Crusade. So I called Blizzard and told them to shut ‘er down, because I didn’t reactivate my account, and they sort of did so. Except since someone allegedly paid for it, they were going to leave the account open so I could play it to my heart’s content! Hooray! Never touched the game again. A few weeks later, I got a message saying I’ve been doing illegal activity in the game, and had to stop or risk my account being shut down. I emailed Blizzard support and told them to go ahead and shut it down, my account was hijacked, and I told them about that a while ago. Apparently nobody noted that on my account. They didn’t shut it down. A couple weeks later, I got another email saying my account’s getting disabled due to activity against the EULA. Again I sent them a message saying I didn’t do it, and encouraging them to note that and shut it down. Then a couple weeks later, I got a final message saying I paid to re-open my account with a credit card that didn’t work. Again… Final call to Blizzard, I don’t think they cared what I had to say. It was a very irritating experience.

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

it is especially true when you are raiding high end content and doing statistical analysis on raid composition :

http://www.worldoflogs.com/reports/Mr1gQLhnD2OGw1Yy/

Using tools like that. We analyze the total damage output per character, damage intake of the tanks, amount of healing required, then expound on theories of tank mitigation, dodge rating vs parry rating……. whether the game uses a 1 roll system or 2 roll system on crits…

It was a full time engineering job. No dental, either.

Hey, this looks familiar! Played WoW with jctGamer for 4 years and I have to agree that by the end, it did feel a bit like a job running numerical analysis, organizing 30-40 people, and developing strategies in the raiding game. While I enjoyed the game, it was definitely a good choice to stop.

WoW seriously fucked up my relationship with my gf at the time, which turned out not be be a bad thing in hindsight.

I used to work with a guy who did the hardcore raids. He’d come over to my desk and tell me all about how he went through an instance with his group, and this one awesome and rare priest robe dropped, but he couldn’t get it because another priest in the raid with more credits of some nature than he had bid on it and won. And that robe would only drop once every 500 raids or so. So he’d keep going back hoping to get that robe.

After hearing about this for the 50th time, I realized the whole nature of raids never appealed to me. So I bought Oblivion, in order to have an open-ended game with an actual point to what you were doing. Completing quests felt rewarding because there was a point, and I never got a quest string of, “Go kill 10 bears, now kill 15 Big Bears, now kill Giant Big Bears until you’ve collected 20 fur patches which only drop 13% of the time, now go kill the Uber Giant Big Mother Bear in her lair, and bring friends in order to do so.”

Man, I forgot how much I hated certain aspects of WoW. And I’m still not sure why I’m reading this thread, it just makes me want to check out how the game has evolved since then!

I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

There are pretty much a million ways to build your characters successfully (6 different classes). Each have three trees (like DII) with 5 Combat Arts (read: spells) each and skills that complement them and your character. The games complexity level is pretty crazy, but it makes it a lot of fun. There isn’t mana, or magic points, instead you have regen times on your spells. So, the more powerful you make your spells, the longer the regen times. But this can be mitigated by skills you take (you get 10 skills), so the balance between power and regen is always key. Planning ahead is crucial. It can be a bit complicated, but if you read up a bit, and are patient with your build, it’s not a problem.

Yeah, I did something similar in Sacred II. One class is a Dryad, which is typically a ranged character. However, I am dual wielding magic staves. The reason is, the Dryad has a spell which pumps INT up a crazy amount and staves do melee damage based off of your INT, not STR. So, I’m running around meleeing with staves, which is sort of absurd, but she wrecks shit.

Played WoW for just under 2 years

Had a great time leveling up two characters, then got sucked into starting a fledgling raiding guild. We were basically trying to go through each raid in their normal progression (i.e. get Tier 1 from the 60 f-mans, then do ZG and MC etc.) Got to the final boss in ZG and downed a couple bosses in MC before the first expansion came out. Suddenly all those hours of gearing up were wiped out as all my blues and purples were worse than Outland greens. Chose to quit rather than upgrade (also was starting Law School in the fall). Don’t have the time to miss it that much these days, but man was it fun for a while.

you just have to get involved with the game’s online community early on in development and stick around for a while. Once you get into a couple it will kind of work as a resume for testing future games.

but runes really kinda ruined the excitement of Magic Finding and I just kinda got tired of the game.

If I were you I wouldn’t get into any MMOs just because they take away such a big portion of your free time. Buy a game like MLB 09 the Show and play people online if you must have that multiplayer component…

I pretty much stuck to EQ/EQ2

Although I tried the other usual suspects – FF, WoW, Vanguard. Always seemed to gravitate back to the Everquest games.

But I was never a hard core raider. It doesn’t have to be a horrible timesink if you find a friendly casual guild – I’d just log on a few times a week, work a few quests and maybe hunt a dungeon or two with my guildies. Good times.
