What if they brought back Barry?
Please no posts about how this is stupid because it will never happen. I know that, you know that, we all know it. This is simply hypothetical fun. What do you guys think would happen if Sabean brought back Barry (today is the last day to add a player on the 40-man for post-season eligibility) to play a couple weeks in September and into the post-season??? (You can answer with a stat line, general idea, whatever you want).
It's pretty unprecedented territory given his 2 year layoff, but with the nature of this club's offense (espec. in LF) I think even in his state of mystery he could help this team. Statswise I really have no idea, but I think he might be able to do something like .260/.375/.450 which would really be quite a boost to our lineup. Just give him the standard first 3-4 at-bats and then bring on the defensive sub.
I know it will never happen (standard excuse would be "distraction to the club", but if the Giants are serious about going for it I do think it makes some sense. AT&T would be electric beyond all imagination. The fans would go nuts, even moreso than they have been recently. Best of all, the offense gets a free upgrade.
So what do you think Barry Bonds could do at his age given the layoff?

Unprecedented? Not at all!
My Bucardo is better than yours.
A hot August weekday, before a small crowd, when the only thing at stake is the tissue-thin difference between a thing done well and a thing done ill. Insofar as the clutch hitter is not a sportswriter's myth, it is a vulgarity, like a writer who writes only for money.
Do it Sabean.

This city is headed for a disaster of biblical proportions. What do you mean, “biblical”? What he means is Old Testament, Mr. Mayor, real wrath of God type stuff. Exactly. Human sacrifice, dogs and cats living together… mass hysteria!

i would love that
i dont know about giving him 3-4 at bats though…id rather have him on the bench for pinch hitting situations…..a hitter like him could teach alot to the younger players as well…if he was willing
Tompkins?
He’s probably available, and an upgrade from Bip, FP, etc.

as bad as Bip is, I can’t imagine Barry Tompkins is an upgrade over anybody (except FP, that goes without saying)

I would do it, but of course, it’s not my ass or ego on the line and it’s not me that would have to deal with the media circus again.
STEVE HOLM! refuses to be the odd man out.
not to mention the effect on the clubhouse, which seems to be pretty positive at this point. most of the players seemed pretty happy to start fresh without him when he left.

Somebody has to say it
This is stupid because it will never happen.

There are many things that will never happen that are not stupid
In fact, I’d venture to say that most things that DO happen are stupider than any number of things that will never happen.

I don’t see why Bonds can’t go .250/.400/.500.
but Ray Lankford has the huge benefit of being from Modesto

I think it would be kinda bad mojo. I’m not against a mercenary, but I feel like this team has finally emerged from Bonds’ shadow. While Bonds might be able to boost the offense, I’d be concerned about players not being as loose and/or the team returning to the days where it seemed like everyone just waited for Bonds to come up.

i don't disagree with what you said
just pointing out that all that aside, i miss the days where Bonds would come up. that’s all.
So do I….

Can't help it.
This team is flawed but much more interesting. Kinda like Vegas, you could go home a winner, but more than likely your just spendin money on a good time.

Except it’s not like that at all. Bonds is a proven winner. To keep your betting analogy going, it’s more like being able to place one bet with a 100% chance of winning, then you blow all those winnings on the worst odds in the casino.

This would be a great idea if he were the hitting coach.

Eh, I think Barry’s done, at least for a situation like this. He’s been off too long, he’s too old, I’m sure he’s in shape but would still need time to work himself into game shape. Basically, I think the adjustment period he’d need to get ready means he’d have no chance to help us. I see a .200/.250/.350 type line from him. Now, if we had signed him at the beginning of the season so he had time to get in shape and get his timing back and everything, I’d be much more optimistic, but let’s face it, hitting a basebal is hard, even for someone as amazing as Bonds…
He has a personal services contract with the team, but he won’t be doing anything for them until his legal troubles are over. I’d like to see hm come back as a hitting instructor of some sorts. He’d be great at it. God knows the team needs it.

Nah. There’s no evidence that he’s been staying in game shape, taking cuts in the cage, and all of that. It’d take way too long to get him ready, and really, this is a new team which deserves to make its own mark.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
We’re going to have these fanposts until Barry officially retires.

Why do you think it’ll stop then? Just the other day a bunch of us were urging (somewhat, but not entirely, facetiously) the Giants to sign Jeff Kent to play second base for the rest of this season.

UR STOOPID THIS WOULD NEVE-oh..
Yeah that would be pretty cool. I bet he could still hit well above average. But would his contract need to cover the cost of his Hoveround for playing LF?
The very bad man traded my son...So now I'd like you all to meet my new son, Ryan "Aaron" Garko...Dammit it's just not the same!
Sign him now
so he can be on the post season roster and be the DH when the giants play the American league team in the World Series. By that time he could be ready. He can hit in front of Pablo as a DH and be almost guaranteed to see some pitches.
i like this idea. sadly barry would ask for $10mil for 6-8 guaranteed AB’s in the AL park.

No
because he would put up a line of .220 with two homers and people like Jay Mariotti would write articles about how “he can’t do it without the juice!1”
I actually want to do this. Seriously. I think we should sign him this year, and maybe next year, for a very simple reason: stats.
Barry is currently sitting on 2935 hits and 1996 RBI, leaving him 65 hits short of 3,000 and 4 RBI short of 2,000, both of which are huge milestones, if almost entirely meaningless. I’d like to see Barry reach the 3,000 hits, 2,000 RBI plateau simply for the legacy of it. Those are the marks only the truly elite, not just Hall of Famers, achieve.
Yes, I realize getting him 65 hits will take more than just this year, I realize he can’t play defense, I realize he hasn’t played in a major league game for nearly two years now. But damn it all if I don’t want to see those pretty little numbers next to his name.
I'd rather win the World Series.
No, really, I have updated my blog this year: http://skaldheim.livejournal.com/tag/baseball
I'd be ok with it,
…if he can still drill those granny style free throws.
