Goddamn Purple Row is boring.
And I’m not even ragging on them for their prissyness re: us pottymouths (at the moment).
But their game threads are like telegrams being sent to people who can’t get the game; it’s nothing but 4-word updates on each play repeated by twenty different people. Their rules say all posts must be about Rockies baseball unless a spring training game goes into a rain delay. They’re MANDATING their own blandness! WTF? I mean, to each their own, but when they attend a game, do they never have non-baseball-related conversations?

Wilson has improved over the past couple months (or maybe he’s just on a good streak). There’s no more, “OH NOES, IT’S NOT A SAVE SITUATION!!” worries with him. He has pitched some very tough innings, in different types of situations and has been beyond solid. My perception also is that he’s throwing more strikes, and not getting himself into as many of the 3-2 counts that he seemed to always be getting into earlier in the season.
Why couldn't McCovey have hit the ball just three feet higher??
he seems to have learned
not to load the bases before deciding to pitch. This morning he gets coffee

He’s been better this year. Fewer walks, more Ks. Maybe a little lucky with the HRs, but good.
If Bochy refrains from bringing him in with the bases loaded, he’s got the right role.
Please hit better, Randy Winn.

I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.
Need I point out the small sample size
and that correlation is by no means established between the previous 120+ start and doing poorly the next time? I’m going to stick by 128 being ok last night given how he was throwing, and that the next start is an independent event. We shall see.

Looked up his stats… 34 games for the Giants, including 11 starts, and he never got a win? So fail. Where’s Gino Espineli when you need him.
I was at the game tonight
Easily the most pumped up crowd I’ve seen in the last four years…including Bonds’ milestone HRs. People were going nuts with every out the final two innings.
Walking down the ramp toward the exit, strangers were high-fiving each other while everyone was chanting "Let’s go Giants (clap clap, clap clap clap).
It was all flavors of awesome.

Yeah, it was a great crowd, but many empty seats, which was puzzling. And I was bursting cerebral arteries during the home halves of the first 5 innings. Didn’t Eric Gagne once complain that the Giants’ were doing the opposite to him? He said they were adding mph’s to his readings to sucker him into challenging Barry Bonds with fastballs. Barry proceeded to hit a 102mph heater into orbit. Of course you have to consider the source here. Gagne probably didn’t want anyone to know how hard the steroids were allowing him to throw.

if you want to know his mph
just check pitch-fx. I think it had him around 92-93 the entire game, which is about his season average.
If you just NEED to freakout about something, freak out about Timmy’s 128 pitch count.
Merkin Valdez? Manuel Mateo? A rose by any other name...
Just a guess
but I’d say Timmy probably lobbied to stay in.

An open letter to Giants' pitchers
Dear Giants’ pitchers,
Stop pitching Todd Helton like he’s Barry Bonds, Albert Pujols and Babe Ruth all rolled up into one. He’s hit 4 homeruns on the road this year in 229 official at bats, and ATT is tougher for lefties than any other road park he plays in. He doesn’t swing at bad pitches, and the umps give him the benefit of the doubt on close pitches. Throw him strikes. Let him hit the ball four times and maybe he’ll hit two singles and two catchable balls. Nibbling when you’re pitching to him doesn’t work and jacks up your pitch count.
Thank you,
rxmeister

Tough life.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Wait, what am I saying? That’s a good life. I can remember when they last won it all. Hell, I had a ticket to game 5. :(
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Yes, we know. That’s what I was lamenting. And the fact that I had a ticket to game 5. Also, did I mention that i had a ticket to game 5 of the 1989 world series?
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
yea, you did, guess i was just mentioning it again. Whatever, i still love the giants, wait did you go to game 5?
Wait, I think I'm falling into the sarchasm
There was no game five… that was the lament… I’ve had two world series tickets in my lifetime, they were both to game 5s, and both series were sweeps…
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
wait! i just fell into the sarchasm! haha, boy am i dumb, i was like 1 year old for the 89 series, all i can remember is NOTHING, haha, dad was telling me he would just watch the game and pound the damn wall, while i would be rolling around the kitchen in a high chair…
Oh! Okay!
No worries. It was a crappy series. And there was an earthquake that I remember very, very well. Being a Giants fan is weird and eventful.

man, if Sabean brought up Posey and put Madison Bumgarner in the rotation for September, I doubt Giants’ fans would even mind missing the playoffs.

Absolutely. Posey could outhit Molina today.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Uh, no… Molina is hitting .263/.283/.439, while Posey is hitting .298/.376/.504 at AAA. I’m confident Posey could outhit him.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
With major league hitting? i want him to do well, but there’s no way i’d want him up right this second. Yea he could out hit Molina given a few weeks, but do we really think Bochy would give him much starting time?
I definitely hear what you're saying
I recognize that there’s no way they’d take away Molina’s starting job and give it to Posey. I’m just making the totally uninformed assertion that, right now, Posey could outhit Molina in the major leagues. He’s got the talent and the skills. And we need the lift.

Silly
Winn doesn’t bat! Sometimes he swings, though.
Proud member of the Adopt-a-Giant program (Aaron Rowand)
Nate’s not really a good hitter so it’s not a shocker, though he’s better than Ishikawa (I don’t understand why he keeps getting starts over Garko, even against RHP), Winn, and Edgar.
by kingofthacove on Aug 29, 2009 3:27 PM PDT up reply actions
Well Ishikawa has been excellent at first base at least. He’s underrated as a position player, with only 3 errors and has a .995 fielding percentage. Granted, the number of games he’s started is low, but he has been working out well there.
Neither he nor Garko have good hitting numbers overall, but Ishikawa is batting great at home; .348.
Yeah Ishikawa is a good fielder, but Garko has much higher offensive upside and a lot of his struggle can be attributed to his .230 BABIP.
And I wouldn’t put much stock into Ishikawa’s home numbers.
by kingofthacove on Aug 29, 2009 4:07 PM PDT up reply actions
Nate really isn’t better than Ishikawa.Their OPS+s are even at 90. Nate has more power, but Travis walks more, so it balances out.

Oh, he's not in a slump
He just sucks now and he’ll never be better, so there’s no need to bat him lower in the order to try and bust him out of it.

As long as Nate and Randy help him out, it should be ok.
