Ballard from SI discusses the five-man rotation
The technologically retarded (me) should not do FanShots. This was interesting however and I do not see it anywhere else.

It is kind of interesting...
…but rife with assumptions, like that Lincecum would be best suited to go on 3 days rest while Martinez would be more effective on six.
The most obvious result, presumably, would be in the standings, where a half dozen more starts from Lincecum (plus perhaps a half dozen from another young pitcher like Matt Cain) would likely lead to more wins, while at the same time limiting the damage from the fifth starter, who is now pitching on six days rest and is theoretically more effective.
But what if you did the analysis and found out that Martinez and Zito do best on 3 days rest and Lincecum and Cain ideally need more? Would you then give Martinez and Zito those extra half dozen starts each? The other alternative would be to junk the evaluation and go back to what you would’ve done anyway.

i find it very interesting
i also like that this was an article about baseball where the writer actually contacted multiple sources to support or debunk a theory. this staple of journalism has been lost on many of the mainstream writers, who rely on their opinion and leave it at that, IMHO.
knowing how unique timmy’s delivery and entire pitching process is (if i remember correctly i believe he said he doesn’t feel soreness the day after pitching) i think he’s a perfect example for this article. imagine a Timmy – Cain – Zito – Timmy rotation with Dirty sprinkled in and another starter going every week or so.

I think a 4 man would be interesting
and the Giants have sorely needed a real mop up guy for the last couple of seasons… it seems like the Fasseros and Wrights have ended up as 5th starters because of injuries and that’s had a bad effect on the rest of the bullpen (because the rest get overused).
So, Martinez or whoever should be in the bullpen and throwing the 4 or so innings in the Zito bad starts….

At the end of the day,
I think a 4 man rotation would probably mean a substantial bump in bullpen innings. I think the 4 man roation arguments have centered around a picture of the old 4 man rotation, where pitchers threw every fourth day AND threw complete games with some regularity.Instead we’d end up seeing both a decrease in effectiveness from the remaining starters and a large portion of the 5th starter’s innings going to the middle relievers (which probably includes the former 5th starter). I don’t believe there’s much to be gained here.

I like how he skirts the issue of young pitchers burn out rate. He assumes 240 IP in 1-2 seasons a pitcher under 26-27 years of age is better for a franchise 5 years above 180 IP.
That’s it! Katie bar the door for this 79 win team is star crossed! And I am loving it.

Well, that's not complete BS.
Since the goal is to win a championship, there’s some extra benefits to be gained by packing the value of several seasons into one or two years. I know that I’d let Cain and Lincecum combine for 600 IP if I knew that the team would end up with a world championship. Not that a really works that way (They’d probably be so gassed by October that the Giants wouldn’t make it out of the first round anyway).
On further review, 600 IP from our 1-2 punch isn’t as far from reality as I initially though. Lincecum’s on pace for 284.2 IP and Cain for 264.2 IP (549.1 IP total) if the Giants make the post season and each starts 2 games per series (I don’t know if the scheduling of the NLDS would allow this without short rest, but I’ll assume that it would).

I think we pretty much agree.
It just irritates me that some baseball writers have not gotten there head around the fact a team with somewhere in the mid 90’s for wins will be very unlikely to stay home after the season these days and frankly most teams are not in a position were their window has be closed in 2-3 years for the next 6+ years unless they place themselves in it by over leveraging the talent they have on hand for 1 given season.

It’s a good thought, and I always like seeing people challenge the conventional wisdom, but I think Lincecum and Cain throw enough pitches already, near the top of the league I believe. If timmy started on 3 days rest consistently, he might not be able to go as deep into games, which means more work for the pen – Now I realize the relievers have generally done a great job so far this year, but I’m not so sure I trust miller and medders to continue to pitch well. So really, we might be taking innings from martinez/sanchez and giving them to miller/medders/valdez. The giants aren’t going to run away with a lot of easy wins, so the pen could end up doing a decent job but still waste the extra lincecain starts.
