Jeff Kent - Boo or Cheer
Jeff Kent on KNBR with Murph and Mac it will probably be up on there site in case you missed it....but the question is do we cheer him or boo tomorrow night at the Giants game???
He was a Dodger but also one of our best cleanup hitters (remember we used to have hitters hitting .330 with 30 jacks 100+ rbi). Memorable incidents include "truck washing/motorcycle injury", MVP awards, "Enjoy the game" comments on KNBR and constant Bonds arguments. He might be the only player in MLB still with a porn mustache & not on steroids playing between '95-04.
Its simple do i Boo or Cheer? Personnaly i am cheering

Definitely cheer. One of my favorite Giants’ hitters in recent times.

I hate anyone who plays for the Dodgers just on the principle of it all. But you’ve still got to cheer for Kent. He was awesome here. Well, he was good here.
I'm thinking but nothing's happening.

How can anyone boo a former Giant (a 2nd baseman at that) who put together a season like he did in 2000: 33/125/.325. He was amazing that year.
I will never forgive his choice to play for the Dodgers (exhibit A: burned t-shirt jersey) but for all the years he was with the Giants he was incredible.
I will not only cheer, I will give him a standing ovation.
Any type of mongering is A-OK in my book.

Cheer. Giants fan rule #329 states the following:
“Any player who was a member of the organization during the 1989 World Series season will herein be exempt from any booing regardless of subsequent club affiliation.”
I don’t make the rules, I just live by them.
Any type of mongering is A-OK in my book.

It’s not like he went directly to the Fodgers. He did have the courtesy to spend 2 years out of our division in Houston before they forced him to file FA. Besides, you could tell that the whole time he played for the Fodgers he hated the team and the fans – not to mention that fat clown Lasorda. Also, it’s not like the Fodgers ever did anything to keep us out of the playoffs when Kent was on the team, and he did nothing to bring glory to their team.

Hey Dodger fans
The way I see it, his Dodger years just padded his career stats, bettering his chances to make the HOF as a Giant.

That’s a pretty big stretch to try to rationalize playing for the Dodgers. I don’t buy it…

I’m not saying that was his motivation, I’m saying that’s how I can live with it.

I wouldn’t blame people who do boo. Remember he will be in San Francisco and Kent donated $15,000 to the Yes on Prop. 8 campaign.

I never liked Kent, even though I knew he was a good ball player. Since I’ll be at home I’ll boo him loudly, and then I’ll turn to Mr. Merope and say “You think Sabes could sign him to a 3 month contract?”
If I was at the game… I wouldn’t boo him though, just at home as a joke. Seriously though, think he could play 2nd tonight?

I would cheer him. He said all the right things since retiring after saying all the wrong things previously. I didn’t like the “halloween costume” comment and I didn’t like the tearful press conference when he talked about his dad and how much he always wanted to play for the Dodgers. I forgive him now though.

That I do NOT forgive!!! Same with his stupid “Better than French vanilla” comment when he signed with the Asstros.
But I’ll give him a pass on it now that he’s retired. He and I are cool again.

Hey, we booed him while he was a Dodger, I think he knows. If anything, give the “required” Dodger boo, then cheer. And yes, I accidentally voted boo.

This is pretty much how I feel. Boo him for being a Dodger, and for willingly becoming a Dodger despite his time in SF. But it is undeniable that the man was a fantastic Giant and probably the best 2B in our history.

I was going to write that it would be unfathomable to me why people would boo, but I think fans wanting to have a good time could certainly ‘justify’ themselves in doing so. That said, Jeff Kent made his mark as a Giant, he helped the team, he played hard and he fired up Bonds. Granted, his MVP award was because of Bonds, but his numbers as a second baseman were just so damn impressive. He reminded me just a little of Will Clark and that might be why I liked him so much. Also, dude could rake. I don’t think Giants fans should boo a player who could suit up tonight and outhit the current home team.
by Every6thDay on Aug 28, 2009 9:27 AM PDT reply actions 0 recs
I boo. I dislike Jeff Kent. However, if Jeff Kent goes into the HoF as a Giant, I cheer. Basically he has to become a Giant again for me to cheer him again, and that would be an event that would make me consider him “a Giant again”.
(I’m also a little unclear as to why he’s going to the game? Is there some event honoring his accomplishments as a Giant? I guess I would have to cheer for that)

I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s the Giants that reached out to him. They are always good at bringing back past greats.

He is being enshrined or whatever you call it, into the Giants Wall of Fame or some such thing. And every Friday they do a “forever Giant” promotion, this Friday he’s it. I think the Giants are trying to repair those burned bridges before Kent gets inducted to the MLB HoF as a Giant.

I hear we’re in the market for a 2nd baseman for September, and that Velez might not actually be very good at defense.

Cheer. One of my favorite players. Was hard to even hate him as a Dodger too since he was already 1 team removed from SF. Had he gone straight to them after leaving here that would be different and he’d deserve tons of hate and scorn, but he didn’t.

Seriously, why couldn’t Jason Schmidt just go play for the Mariners? Why’d he have to give all Giants fans a collective bitch slap and sign directly with the Dodgers??? I NEVER wanted to boo that guy!
(yes, I understand money had a lot to do with it, but that doesn’t make it a forgivable sin. But Schmidt and I will be cool once he retires too)

It’d be different if Schmidt had gone to the Dodgers and actually done something. All he did was take their money. So in my warped, convoluted, Giantscentric mind I can just tell myself “He knew he wasn’t going to be good anymore, and he went to the Dodgers on purpose to mess them up.”
And you can all just pipe down, it’s my little fantasy world so nyeh!

following this line of reasoning, Kent seemed to cause problems in the clubhouse at Chavez Ravine, by calling out the gamerishness of the younger guys. So maybe…

Yeah but I liked Schmidt, I never liked Kent. I wanted to. He gave a substantial bit of money to support girls sports programs and what not, which I whole-heartedly agree with, but there was just something about him that I didn’t like. Yeah he was a great ballplayer, I just never liked the dude, and I’m not jumping on any kind of “I Love Jeff Kent” bandwagon now, Mr. Merope’d call me on it anyway!

Schmidt pitched his heart and soul out for the Giants. He left his right arm out there on the ATT mound just like Robb Nen did. However, instead of Brian Sabean stupidly signing yet another FA to one contract too many, he had his ex-assistant Ned Colletti do it. The Dodgers spared us the vitriol we would have tossed at Schmidt like we toss now at Rich Aurilia. Thank you, Dodgers. This is why I rooted for you against the Rockies the last few days.

Not question, I’m going to cheer him. Adding Jeff Kent to a line-up that already included Bonds made that great five year run possible, including the run to the cancelled world series. He did some great things in San Francisco and is already cemented as one of the greatest offensive second-sackers of all time.

I was just thinking, dangerous I know… but… I wonder if there will be protester types at the game?? Kent did give a pretty good chunk of change to the Yes on 8 people. A baseball game seems a silly place to protest but then stupid tomahawk chop protesters were there when Atlanta came to town. (I promised them I wouldn’t do the chop, ever ever. Duh.)
