Postgame Meh: Diamondbacks clobber the Giants or something

As far as losses go, I wouldn't say that was soul-crushing. It was actually somewhat refreshing. No false hopes of a potential comeback. No blown five-run leads. Just good old fashioned indifference all night. I don't feel all that bad, to be honest. It's a brief respite from the absolute gut-wrenching despair we're normally used to seeing. Ayep. Feelin' fine.

You know, unlike that mythical Monday game.

Now, to sweep the Dingerz.

I recommend Memento

Awesome movie, but it might have gotten me a bit more intense than the Gigantes game for today, at least.

I’m just wondering where people are shoving RUSH down people’s throats to create this hate. I can understand hating powder puff pop singers, or terrible rappers, but it doesn’t seem like there is anything intrinsically evil about RUSH. Hell, most people go through most of their life without hearing more than 3 songs by them. Most of my enjoyment of it comes from liking early 90’s proggy bands such as Primus.

Uh, wow, didn’t think we’d ever get a more defensive rush fan than walrusman! I have, in fact, had the band relentlessly recommended to me by fans and, after giving them a more than fair shot, IMO, it turns out that I really don’t enjoy their music. My hatred of them has reached somewhat irrational levels because of the somewhat overeager, and yes, defensive fanbase.

Plus, they’re a band that it’s kind of fun to have silly arguments back and forth about hating them or loving them about.

Giants should use 4 man rotation

There is no physiological reason requiring pitchers to have 5 days rest. Quite simply, more Cain and Lincecum starts would equal more wins at the end of the season.

Yeah, I own that release. It is awesome, but there’s a lot of great stuff missing, and fricking heap load of continuity goes flying out the window. Still, if I owned the entire series of Larry Sanders, I’d probably meld with the ol’ television and become a societal derelict.

by Alex_Lewis on Aug 27, 2009 11:51 PM PDT up reply actions

Same here.

I watched the episode after Larry abruptly quits the show and goes to Montana; Arthur visits him and brings vodka and salt so they can have Salty Dogs. This in turn reminded me of the first season in which Arthur introduces the Salty Dog (one part vodka to one part salt), which just always cracks me up.

Another great moment: Hank is crying and screaming that they laugh at him and don’t respect him, and asked what was so funny about his falling and breaking a tooth on a urinal. Barely audibly, Larry says, “It was a back tooth. We didn’t know how you did it.”

I hate to do a complete 180 from what I said yesterday, but after watching that debacle I want him out of the September rotation. At least he kept us in the games before that. Monday’s day off enables you to skip the fifth spot, and this should allow you to do something with some team that’s out of it. Of course if you want him playoff eligible you have to act fast, but it’s not really necessary to have your number five starter on your playoff roster. Come to think of it, it’s hard to even mention playoffs after looking at that lineup last night.

Bengie and Pablo supposedly won’t be playing at least tonight. I’m shocked at Bengie’s lack of perspective about the importance of this series, but since the Giants’ haven’t offered him a contract for next year, I don’t blame him for putting his health first. I’d certainly like to see Pablo in the lineup though.

embarrassed father of over the hill Edgardo Renteria

by rxmeister on Aug 28, 2009 6:33 AM PDT up reply actions

A quad injury must just be a total bitch for a catcher. Strain your quad and then try to do intermittent squats for an hour or two. Bengie’s slow as it is – a banged up quad isn’t going to help.

I haven’t seen any updates on Pablo’s “flu” which might be a bigger factor in his return. In my experience a calf muscles respond a lot faster to heat, massage, & pain meds than do the quadriceps.

by Merope on Aug 28, 2009 8:13 AM PDT up reply actions

if you seriously consider yourself a contender, you really need to call up Buster Posey right now. If he was called up, I think most Giants’ fans attitude would change from “get your ass in the lineup Bengie,” to “I don’t care if you come back or not.” It doesn’t even matter if Buster is ready or not. I’d rather go down in flames with Buster as my catcher than Eli Whiteside.

I’ll have to do some more testing…but if you’re a firm believer – get your platter ready , here comes my head.

For a lot of reasons i could give or take coming up – Jr’s homework , a fucklong drive , the team is tanking , pitchforks and hatchets , and where the hell are we spending Saturday night?

But the tickets are paid for. And I haven’t seen a Giant game at home in longer than many of you have been breathing , so there’s incentive enough.
I was wondering if anyone knew of a quicker route from Phx to SF – somehow , heading for the coast and up – while scenic an’ all – just seems as if it’d be longer.

If you have an inside line on a direct route , great. If you don’t , I’ll still make it there.

How to get to San Francisco? Practice!

The last time I made the SF-PHX drive was 1988, but at that time:

I-10 to I-405 near LA to I-5 to I-580 (just past the Modesto turn off) to the Bay Bridge and there you are.

Yes, I-5 speed limit is 70 and you can get away with 80. I am not sure about how to get from PHX to I-5 but if you could avoid the LA slum traffic that would make it easier on you, but looking at maps it looks like you would have to go way out of your way to avoid that shit hole

Get away with 80?

I once talked to a Highway Patrolman on I-5. My wife and I had been run off the road by a jackass hauling a trailer going around 85-90. His response: “Yeah, people go down this thing usually at 90, any slower and you might get into trouble”

Since then I have never driven slower then 80 on I-5, usually 90 though.

We saw a couple in a late model pickup truck – a pick up truck for crying out loud! – flip their truck into the center divide (read oleander) because they swerved to miss a tumble weed. On the rare occasion we go to San Diego we make sure we are going through La-La Land after 10pm. We get gas outside of the LA area, just to make sure that we don’t have to stop or get off the freeway there. 5 is probably your best route, it’s faster and there are less semi-trucks. 99 will work if there’s trouble on 5, there seem to be more food places along 99, but there are also more big rigs.

If you are looking for a place to stay Saturday night, there are usually tons of hotel vacancies near SFO. We like to stay down the peninsula a little more and most recently stayed at the new Best Western near Coyote Point – where there is a neat little natural history, wild life rehabilitation museum the kiddo might enjoy – if the hours cooperate with your schedule.

The hotel isn’t in the best part of town, but it’s cheap, it’s clean, and it’s new, so the manager and employees are REALLY nice.

I live in Pasadena and drive to the Bay Area regularly. You definitely want to take the 210 W through the LA area to I-5 — you’ll miss virtually all of the LA basin traffic. I-5 north is far and away the fastest route (but not most scenic, unless you like cows). There is absolutely no direct route through Vegas that goes to Bay Area, so that won’t work.

From Pasadena to SF, you can do it in an easy 6 hours. 80 is the de facto speed limit on 5, just keep it under 85 to avoid CHP.

Not sure what time of day you are driving, but when I went to school in Tucson and went home to San Jose I always took 10 towards LA and got on 57 north to 210 west to I5. You’ll miss the worst of the LA traffic that way. Once you get closer I am not sure because I always took pacheco pass towards gilroy and the south bay, but if you are going to the city I would assume the fastest way would be to take 5 all the way to the east bay and take 580 west to 80 and come across the bay bridge

You’ll be there in plenty of time. If you haul ass and no drunks crash that early in the morning, you’ll be past LA and on I5 in 5-6 hours. Depending on your food/bathroom schedule, that puts you on 580 by late morning/lunch. I made it from Tucson to SJ in 10.5 hours once, but i was young, stupid and going absurdly fast. Since phoenix is closer, I think 11-12 hours plus food stops is reasonable

This game was like having a Thursday evening date with a young lady who, the moment she gets in your car to go to dinner, announces that she has to be home at 10:00 for Bible study. Boom, just like that, you know the limitations of the evening. Friendly conversation, nice dinner, perhaps a nice moonlight stroll afterward. But that’s it.

Thus were the expectations set upon the posting of tonight’s lineup.

But no fear, Friday is Lincecum Day, at home. That’s like having a date with the most attractive girl around, who thinks you’re “it”, insists upon paying for everything, lets you drive her Ferrari, laughs at the thought of commitment and is a gymnast.

yeah, that was definitely a minor league lineup. Amazing that Nate gets benched after about 3-4 bad games, while Aaron Rowand and Randy Winn are allowed to have 130 of them. I looked at the Dback lineup before the game and although I didn’t know a few of the names, they had decent numbers. I kind of knew we were in trouble right there.

yea for real, i truly dont understand why Nate gets the bench even though he’s had 3-4 bad games, isn’t that something that works itself out? One cant just sit on the bench and expect it to magically disappear like a cold or something. Aside from the veteran thing, it just didn’t make any sense at all, and yea Rowand is still in there, Winn is still in there, right now i’m surprised the giants won the first 2 games with this lineup. The player with something to prove this weekend is Rowand, he just has to step it up. I hope at least Pablo comes back tonight, since it’s almost true, that he brings something to this lineup, a contact/power hitter, and without it, we have Ryan Rohlinger…. who knows, this kid might be good, i dunno. It’s just been tough watching games while at school here in the midwest

Please show me where Rowand has had 130 bad games! He was foolishly played through injury but aside from that he’s played well this year. Can we stop please stop putting him into the “he’s played badly but he’s been run out there anyway as he’s a veteran” camp as he’s been deserving of being in the lineup all year.

Get A Gameface, Joe Martinez!!

Joe Martinez is probably the least intimidating looking pitcher in the NL West…maybe all of the NL, in my opinion.

I know he’s young and he’s still learning the ropes, but seriously, the guy needs to get a look on his face to match the gas when he throws, not just look like he’s pumping gas at Costco after getting his hot dog.

He doesn’t appear to scare anyone when he’s on the mound. He actually looks kinda scared when he’s working, which I know might be due in part to that awful line drive he took to the head earlier this year.

We have a plethora of game-face vets that Joe can easily be schooled by:

Tim Lincecum has the “cool catfish” gameface. His mouth frowns downwards and he scowls as if to say, “you’re mine and I haven’t even thrown yet” to the batter. He’s the shortest pitcher in baseball, but his body language speaks the loudest.

Jonathan Sanchez
has the look of a mexican drug lord who has been wronged by a cronie, and just by eye contact can tell you you’re about to be assassinated. Even when Sanchez is not throwing great, he still has a game face that makes you uneasy.

Barry Zito has the “crazy man on the street talking to himself” game face. He psyches himself up, even swears under his breath when he’s on the mound with that dangling right arm that he hangs out before each pitch, distracting the batter. He seems like he might go coo-coo for cocoa puffs on you at any given moment, either that or urinate on himself.

Randy Johnson: Maybe in the top 10 all-time of great game faces. Randy has the face that looks like he’s on trial for serial killing. That mug seriously looks like post office wanted list material. Being almost 7 feet tall doesn’t hurt either.

Bob Howry:
Howry’s kind of a mediocre pitcher at times, but his game face is epic. He looks like Dolph Lungren in Rocky IV with that chilling stare, about to utter, “I VILL BREAK YOU”, to Balboa.

Jeremy Affeldt has the “go ahead and laugh at this patch of hair on my chin and my huge bling cross necklace I’m gonna get you out anyways” type of look.

Sergio Romo: Ever seen DeNiro in ‘Taxi Driver’? Enough said.

Brian Wilson’s gameface: Blank stare. Blink. Blink. Blink. 100mph heat. Game over.

Thoughts, comments?

You’re right, it is an “aw shucks” look.

If you were a parent, he’s the kind of guy you would want your daughter to bring home as a date…lovable, loyal, puppy dog Joey.

But in this case the opposing batters are probably thinking, “I’m gonna shell you for runs, but we can still grab a beer afterwards…are you old enough?”

Giants Claimed Hoffman, trade unlikely
The Giants claimed Trevor Hoffman, but it appears that the Brewers will pull the reliever off waivers instead of negotiating a trade, according to ESPN.com’s Buster Olney. The Giants made the claim partly because Hoffman would help their bullpen and partly because they didn’t want to give the Rockies or Dodgers a chance at acquiring him.

Are there any links or blogs or anything to when teams can expand the roster and who they might call up? I think it’s September 1st, but I was interested in seeing if the Giants have plans on bring up anyone of interest for the final month. Posey, Bumgarner, Neal, Klieshnick, Pucetas are a few that come to mind that could possibly help… but what is the likely hood that they bring these kids up while still in the wild card race? What about bringing up veterans like Ramon Ortiz?

Hoffman and Sheffield would be cool… they’re old, but Hoffman’s wisdom could prove beneficial, and Sheffield is still pretty intimidating at the plate by waiving that bat back and forth.

I learned something new today
Verducci notes that salaries negotiated through arbitration are not guaranteed so the Red Sox could cut Wagner if they agree to a contract through arbitration and he underperforms in Spring Training.

Didn’t know that. Arbitration contracts are not guaranteed until first day of season. Practical application of this is the D-backs could offer arbitration to Conor Jackson, if he doesn’t get back to where he was (or close to it) in spring training, they can just cut him.

by jctGamer on Aug 28, 2009 10:35 AM PDT reply actions

So could we offer arb to bengie and winn and if they accept we can cut them in ST?

Quick sidenote on this subject. How are arb salaries handled off season. For example if Winn goes to arb and gets 6 mil for next season on 2/20/09 and we cut him 3/20/09 how much do we pay him? Do we pay him using the following formula:

(# of days since contract signed)/(# of days to end of WS+10)*6M

Does that make sense?

Hahahahahaha! Bowker says “no”. Frandsen says “fuck that”.

And, of course, on the flip side, he gives players every chance to continue to fail night after night after night after night, until the front office has to make up an injury to put a guy on the DL (Aurilia says “O hai!”). Or until they keep failing (Rowand, Winn, Renteria, etc.).

You want 'soul-crushing?'

Baseball Prospectus would like to shit on your hopes and dreams.

This is on ESPN Insider, but seems (at least for the moment) to be freely available. In case it moves behind the pay wall or some such, let me summarize:

math math math
Using the same methodology on the National League, the Giants’ remaining schedule is 20 points harder than that of any other NL contender, a consequence of their playing in what’s surprisingly been the league’s strongest division this year. This translates to a 12.2 percent chance of making the playoffs.

Even factoring in their recent slump, the Dodgers’ playoff chances haven’t dropped below 95% since May 31st.

Sigh.

Giants wins feel better than Dodger losses, but it's darn close.

These BP odds of making the playoffs are updated every day here. It’s been a long while since the Giants have been better than 20% to get in. Last night’s loss dropped the odds from 12% to 10%.

This methodology hates the Giants, BTW, because according to their calculations, the offense has actually overperformed in terms of runs scored so far.
