The value of this virtual community to you

I am amused by the sheer volume and energy of tangents taken in the conversations on this blog.  Without actively trying to do so, Grant and the other mods have built this site into a genuine virtual community.

I'm curious about the significance of that community to everyone.  Just because I've been into this sort of thing since 1986 and I'm always interested in how it works.  Please answer the poll below, ranking McCovey Chronicles in your personal heirarchy.   (Note that I'm interested in your answer with regard to the community aspect - online conversation - separate it if possible from the attraction of the stand-alone blog post writing.)

Poll
How highly does McCovey Chronicles rank in your personal web-surfing list of online communities? That is, if you had a minimum number of sites in which you participate in (or lurk through) banter between users, how low would you go before cutting this?
McCovey Chronicles is my most important community. If I had only one place to talk to people publicly online, this would be it. Topic drift rules!

Does Facebook count? If so, I guess I gotta make this #2.

#1 for me

And SBNation in total is really awesome. Even though I don’t participate at most sites, I usually come here for news on anything going on. When I wanted to know when Mat Gamel was going to be called up, I just browsed through Brew Crew Ball for a few days to see if they knew anything. If someone gets hurt in a game, I just go to the teams game thread to find out what it looked like and how bad it looked. I don’t need ESPN or Yahoo Sports hardly at all anymore, and I think that’s a good thing.

My primary use of the community is to discuss the Giants with more knowledgeable fans. My friends and co-workers who are fans are only superficial fans or have limited knowledge of advanced statistics. I can only take so much when it comes to hearing my boss complain about how he isn’t a fan of Brian Wilson because “he looks like a jerk with a stupid hair cut” or talk about how Randy Winn is a good player.

I don’t have a facebook, myspace or twitter. Places I surf on the internet:

1. Yahoo Fantasy Sports – Quite a few leagues, I interact with friends and some family through there.
2. McCovey Chronicles – My outsource of smart-ass humor. Oh, and you guys & gals are pretty smart. I steal all your info & pass it onto friends & family as my own. Thanks. (You really should copyright some of your stuff)
3. ESPN – For the news. Buster Olney’s daily blog is my new sports page.

And that is about it.

Those that want “Real Time” game chat, can go to IRC (Dalnet, Undernet, Efnet, etc…) and set up a real time chat channel. If people want to try out how that would work, I have a channel (that I’m “babysitting” for someone) where you could give it a whirl.

I won’t be home tonight but maybe for Friday night’s game if people want to try it, I’ll add a “how to get there from here” to this thread.

Interesting Poll

My two main haunts are here and Facebook. I just joined FB a few months ago and I’ve been here forever.

FB is great ofr keeping touch with friends, but McC is something special. Yeah, we’re united by our love for the Giants and I’m always learning, but the tangents, running gags, snarky remarks and hilarious images takes it to another level. The longer you hang out here, the more fun it becomes. It’s nearly impossible to describe to others who don’t “get it”. Like Delorean, I’ve met a bunch of y’all IRL and have what I consider friends here.

On the other hand, if Facebook had more dick jokes, I’d so be outta here.

Top three

LiveJournal is still my most important virtual community. I’ve been there since 2001 and met a ton of important people in my life there; my best friend from Boston, as well as several other online friends who became IRL friends. I’ve dated a few men I met via LJ, including a guy I was with on and off for about four years.

Facebook is #2, probably because I have so many professional contacts there. I have several media contacts on Facebook and I network with them; fellow writers, broadcasters, and players.

Then this place is #3. I’ve met lots of IRL people here as well and managed to spread the gospel of the Giants’ minor leaguers.

This has been the most insane week of my life, and it’s only Thursday. I moved in Saturday. My roommates are all incredibly awesome. My classes are great—except for the journalism class. The university dropped me because I didn’t have a prereq. I didn’t know I needed the prereq, and they let me register for it anyway. I had to scramble around to find a class to fill the missing units, and ended up joining marching band. They handed me an alto sax and a uniform the first day, just like that. It’s been over eight years since I played sax, but I picked it up quickly. Benefits of being part of the Pride of the Spartans: we’re traveling to LA over Labor Day weekend to preform at the USC/SJSU football game. All on the school’s dime. I also joined symphonic band as first chair bassoon. Again, another need based decision, on both sides; I needed units, they needed a bassoonist. They didn’t care that I haven’t played in eight years. I can put air through the horn, so the hard part is over.

In my other classes, I got a standing ovation in comm, nailed the points re: Spain and Portugal’s conflicts in the 1400s in global studies class, and found a new friend in my polisci prof as he’s a huge Giants fan.

So life is good.

I need the journalism class for my minor. I have to take the prerequisite next semester so I can get the JRNL class next fall. Woe. But yeah, in every class we got the gloom and doom speech about cutbacks, class cancellations, and students being dropped from their financial aid because of the school’s cutbacks.

I’m playing alto in the band, so I should be safe. I’m worried about being in front rank at the USC show, as field marching was never my strongest suit. The game will be on Fox Sports Net according to our director, so maybe that means CSNBA? If it is on, look for the shortest alto sax player in front during the halftime show. That’s me.

sarchasm re journalism

if they ruin your writing I’ll be very unhappy.

Do they even show the bands’ marching routines on TV anymore? It seems to take valuable time away from beer and viagra ads, and “highlights” from Ivy League games. A lot of shots during the game though, and if you all manage to challenge U$C they might even tear themselves away from that sideline once or twice.

I fell into the sarchasm.

I don’t think my writing will be ruined. I networked with the prof and pitched him my best offer: if he could get me into the class, he’d get a professional journalist ready to produce top quality stories. He said my pitch was great and he would take me if he could, but he was bound by university rules.

I expect a thorough asskicking at the hands of USC, but it should be fun anyway.

I don’t think there’s anything like that in my classes. I attend three classes MW 9-1:15 back to back to back: communications, polisci, and global studies. I have my marching band rehearsals in class three days a week in the late afternoons and a full day Saturday, and then symphonic band twice a week TuTh. I have one instructor for each class and the class activities are confined to classwork, homework, and in the music classes, rehearsals and practicing.

We’re doing a lot of weird, sinister stuff in the Halloween theme, including a tune called Voodoo that has singing parts and flashlight cues and other weirdness. I actually sorta met my wife through an online forum (we actually met at a gathering of said forum), but I don’t really like it that much anymore. Nowhere near as much as I like MCC..

Facebook and here are neck and neck, but I mainly come here to steal ideas and statistical references I can use to make people on Facebook think I know what I’m talking about regarding the Giants. It works pretty well.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Aug 27, 2009 6:48 PM PDT reply actions   0 recs

The only reason I voted for the “two other places” option is because one is personal (facebook…a great place to look through family members’ and friends’ photos at your own pace and discretion), and the other is professional. But for sheer entertainment and more knowledge than I gleaned from thirty years of reading standard sporting pages, McCC is second to none. I can’t keep up with the comments much these days (it seems even the most brief and innocuous post elicits thousands of comments…a tribute to the growth of the site’s popularity), but I ‘m still an avid reader, and have started to reflexively refer to Grant’s pieces as ‘columns’ and ‘articles’ these days, as I see his work as worthy of that respect. That is of course a matter of semantics, yes—there is a generation of people who will see no hierarchy of terms in references like “posting” versus “column”—but I still read value into those words.

That being said, Rush still sucks unless you’re in 7th grade, my list of books I’ve read is more erudite than yours, my list of films more obscure, and I miss E.

Once Durham was dealt, he had nothing left to complain about.

I remember in the early days on this site, Moggeee was the only other guy up at 3am posting, and we always found something to argue and tease each other about — usually Durham.

Maybe they just went out and got real lives, but I’m afraid we may have lost some of the original McCoven because of the all the new members — it used to be you knew just about every name that popped up, but now I’m to the point where I don’t recognize most. I wonder if guys like Dr. B, Moggeee, E, Salemicus, et al. may have felt less at home with so many strangers around, or that there wasn’t as much room for their voice. I hope not, because they all are missed.

Come back, Moggeee. I miss you buddy.

I use Facebook and MySpace and Twitter for different things. Facebook for people I know in “real life”, MySpace for my profession – I would totally ditch it but I have too many professional contacts with other artists and whatnot. Twitter’s for the LOLs.

BUT this is the place I have the most fun at.I’m not STRICTLY here for the lulz, but it’s close. I really cannot stand the stereotypical meathead sports fan, heaped with testosterone and frequently racist and sexist and homophobic and et cetera. This place is an oasis, it’s so unlike any other place where I can talk, share, and learn baseball it’s not even close. I learn so much from all youse. But the laughs are top notch. Some days those Gameday Threads are the only thing I really look forward to. I have a blast watching those games with you people. So thanks.

Random Facebook Story

I know a guy who, while in the army, started talking to a woman from the Dominican Republic through Facebook. They talked on the internet for about a year, after which they decided to meet, and he applied for a one week vacation. It took some time, but he got it in the end. He flew to the DR, and by the end of the week married that woman and stayed there. I don’t think he’s ever coming back. He’ll go to jail if he does.

I nearly posted I found a great Audi mechanic in SJ using Yelp before reading the end of your post. I also need to find a good Jeep mechinic—where is yours?

Yelp for food criticism always strikes me as good, but value is the overridding concern, so expensive restaurants get less love and intelligent criticism.

Yelp is great. I found a music shop in Cupertino to stock up on reeds and other things I need for band. Also found a quick tailor right down the street. They hemmed my marching band uniform pants in 15 minutes. It’s Zahir’s or something like that on Stevens Creek, across the street from Elephant Bar. A+ for quick alterations, and cheap!

it’s important to read the reviews and not just go by the averages… and discount the one or two weenies that post one star hatefests and say things like “wow the chinese food at this pizza place is teh suxxors”.

I’m glad it’s starting to spread outside the Bay too… we found a great Mexican restaurant in Modesto which allowed us to go to a Nuts game with some nice heartburn before we even got to the game.
