A Call to a McC Vote!

Last night's home run by Molina was huge, dramatic and, for most of us, utterly and totally unexpected.  We were all bitching about Bochy's decision to have Molina up there and when he went 0-2, we all looked right.  Little did we foolish mortals know!

Memorable sports moments are even more memorable when they have a simple name that people instantly asscociate with that moment.  Cal's "The Play", The Steelers' "Immaculate Reception", The Niners' "The Catch" and The Giants' "Shot Heard 'Round The World" are etched in our collective conscience.

To properly memorialize Bengie "Big Money" Molina's 2-out, 3-run homer that perhaps ends up being the key moment of the 2009 season, I propose we officially name it. Naturally, since this is McC, it needs a name that's appropriately inappropriate.

I put it to you Greg Marmalard and McCoven, can we call it "The Big Money Shot"?

The Giants won a game they were “supposed” to win because of the quality of their opponent. As the level of difficulty increases, however, the competitive skill of the team tends to go in the opposite direction. Last night was nice and dramatic, but I can’t vote either way on this issue because I don’t think the Giants are playing with any money; they busted on Monday.

Your opinion is completely understandable and should probably be one that I share, but where you see optimism in the numbers (games remaining/games at home/games back) I see pessimism. The Giants are great at home but bad on the road; they are iffy against teams with comparable records (there’s an enormous disparity in talent when you compare them to some teams, including those ahead and just beneath them in the WC standings); poor fundamentals; questionable talent outside of Lincecum, Cain and Sandoval. In terms of season-defining moments and momentum-changers, Molina’s pinch-hit game-winning HR pales in comparison to losing two games late and being rained out on Monday.

Serious question

It sounds as though you don’t like the 2009 Giants and/or have written them off. It also sounds like you were unable to take any enjoyment in last night’s (or Tuesday night’s) fun.

My question is why would you continue to bother watching games, following the team or spendf time discussing the team with others?

I think the team has exceeded people’s expectations and has been more fun than we hoped for. I’m convinced some people enjoy predicting failure and then hope for it so they can feel good about being right.

I’m sure he’s a loyal Giants’ fan, but I’m sure glad I don’t have that attitude. I mean even if we sweep into a tie with the Rockies this weekend, their schedule the rest of the way is so much easier than ours. However, this game is played on the field and not on paper. This amazing run the Rockies have been on could continue all the way through October, or for all we know could have ended last night.

Hyperbole swings both ways — the Money Shot or whatever doesn’t equal or negate what happened in Colorado.

I tried to avoid watching last night’s game (I did skip the night before) but turned it on in the eighth. I was amazed to see that a walk started a rally and that Winn didn’t end it. And Molina’s home run was nice. I admit that I was numb to it. I experienced a modicum of enjoyment from it and that’s about it. I don’t enjoy predicting failure. Baseball is largely failure, anyway, so predicting it is really kind of a lame prediction.

This team has absolutely exceeded expectations, mine especially. I think that’s great! I am wary of using this year’s success as a measure for future success, but only because I don’t believe I’ve witnessed the various parts assembled here really improving over the course of the season. I wrote them off when they wrote themselves off as serious contenders. Good teams beat good teams, especially on the road. Also, I don’t think it’s particularly negative to empirically and statistically note that the Giants’ 25-man roster is not as good as other 25-man rosters and use that as an additional point in my pessimistic view of their chances.

by Every6thDay on Aug 27, 2009 11:04 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Next season

If we take this year’s team and make the fllowing changes:

- Replace Molina with Posey
- Replace with Winn with Juggernate
- Get a full year of Freddy Sanchez instead of the yech we’ve had at 2B most of the year
- Get a full year of Garko/Ishi platoon
- Get a full year of the improved Zito
- Get a full year of the improved sanchez
- Get a full year of Joe Martinez (or Madison Bumganer?)

Wouldn’t you expect improvement over this year?

The optimism in me says Panda has shown signs of improving his discipline and will be better defensively at 3B with a full year under his belt. I also think there’s potential to pusue a bigger bat in LF.

I think the team progressed and has decent chance of improving next season.

I hope you are right

But those are a lot of “potential” positives. Posey may not be ready, Nate’s shown lately that he’s certainly a work in progress. I think Sanchez will be fine, as will the Garko/Ishi platoon. We’ve seen Zito improve in short bursts before, although this time just feels different (seems his command and fastball velocity are more consistent now), Sanchez will always be a wildcard I think, and I’m not sold on Joe Martinez or Bumgarner (yet).

Theoretically, we should be better, but baseball is a cruel, fickle mistress. There’s going to be injuries, and there’s going to be at least one headscratching acquisition by Sabean that’s going to make little sense.

In short, this has been a stellar year for the pitching staff, and an abysmal year for the offense. There’s a very good chance that the offense improves a bit, but the pitching and defense could regress.

OPS+ does not account for grit and veteran savvy, or patiently aggressive batting approaches… the latter three ‘components’ are what the Giants’ organization find most valuable. OPS+ can fuck a duck.

by otis29 on Aug 27, 2009 12:24 PM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Most of those are improvements...

…although some are assumptions (that Zito and Sanchez can sustain the levels they’re currently pitching at). And I’m not at all sure that a full year of Martinez would be an improvement, considering that what he has to be an improvement over is 17 starts by Johnson + 6 by Sadowski + his own starts. I’d say he’s likely to be an upgrade over Sadowski but not over Johnson.

I think they have a decent chance of improving also. But the pessimist in me says that the bullpen has overachieved this year and might regress. That would definitely cost us some games with a low-scoring offense.

Sanchez and Zito

I don’t think the key with them is that they both pitch great every time, but more that they avoid their really bad starts. That’s been the encouraging thing to me; they both seem to be shedding their habit of starts that blow up and give the team no chance to win.

Sanchez’ start last night is a nice example. After a lead-off HR and two errors by Sadowski, the “old Sanchez” might have lost his focus and fallen apart into a disastrous outing. Instead, he remained cool, got out of the inning with no further damage and went on to have a really nice game.

I agree about Panda, 3-2 groundout during Monday’s rainout notwithstanding. He’s definitely improved over the course of the season.

When the Giants don’t even pursue a guy like Bobby Abreu (had for less than RJ and would’ve been an even bigger impact on the offense) I don’t really have good feelings about FA pickups. I don’t really care for Brian Sabean’s style.

I don’t have many concerns about the Giants’ pitching, so the last three points don’t sway my opinion of next season. If the Giants actually give Posey a fair chance at winning/keeping the job, then great. My pessimistic view is that they’ll re-up with Molina.

I didn’t like the Sanchez deal and I don’t know that his current injury won’t crop up again next season. In fact, my recollection is that Sanchez is injury-prone. Not a good thing to have in a 2B when the organization is dangerously thin at the middle infield spots. Garko/Ishi = shrug. I see that platoon as putting up league average for 1B, which would be fine I suppose, only that 1B is a high-offense position and the Giants haven’t been able to support that notion for quite some time now and the rest of the lineup has a lot of below league average offense already.

I don’t have an answer, I can only go off of what I see and what the numbers say. I think the pitching is there, but outside of Lincecum, Cain and Panda, I truly believe everyone else is a toss-up and fungible.

by Every6thDay on Aug 27, 2009 11:36 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I hope Abreu has a bigger impact on the offense than Johnson.

Otherwise you have to look at where we were in the beginning of the season to see why we signed who. We didn’t sign Abreu because we had essentially 4 OFs, Lewis, Rowand, Winn, and Schierholtz. When we believed we were going to be around .500 it was a year to see if Lewis could put it together again (not so much in the power dept.) or to see if Schierholtz was capable of being a starter next year (hardly know, but he’ll be capable I think). Signing Abreu would just make it harder to find out about our youngsters.

Abreu would’ve had a bigger impact on the offense than Johnson would’ve had on the pitching.

I offer that my Abreu comment is heavily influenced by hindsight. Using the Giant’s lack of prowess in finding/developing offensive players heavily influences my foresight.

For me, the key is...

…that they had chances to make up ground on two recent series against the teams ahead of them, but they lost 2 of 3 to the Dodgers at home before losing 3 in Denver. They really didn’t look good against either team. So yeah, they take all six with the Rockies, and they’re in good shape, but a 4-2 or even a split feels more likely.

This game definitely doesn’t have the impact of The Catch or The Play, though.

I know we're all excited...

but we’re talking about a game in August. It’s the same reason I didn’t set fire to all of my giants gear on Monday night, and the same reason I’m not printing world series tickets this morning. The next GAME/HR/PLAY OF TEH SEAZUN!!! is…oh, about 8 hours away. /aguafiesta

To properly memorialize Bengie “Big Money” Molina’s 2-out, 3-run homer that perhaps ends up being the key moment of the 2009 season, I propose we officially name it.

Ugh, too soon.

Try again after Oct. 4th, then we will talk.

I got home late last night and turned on the TV just as Winn hit his bloop single. I frankly LOL’d when Molina as announced as the pinch hitter. But the minute That Pitch left Qualls’ hand, I thought, “if Bengie makes contact, that’s a home run.” And it was. And there was much rejoicing in the land.

The Big Money Shot was definitely a momentum shifter for this team. Keep in mind, 6 out of their last 8 wins have been credited to the bullpen, which indicates that their starters have been unlucky to say the least over the past few weeks. If Timmy/Cain/Zito start collecting WINZ again, the Giants may have a big September stretch run in them.

I can’t believe I just wrote those sentences. I don’t not believe!

I don’t see what getting wins for the starters has to do with anything (other than their Cy Young chances). If the starters continue to keep the games close, and the hitters only wake up in the 8th inning…well, I’d be perfectly happy for the bullpen to get another 20 wins in the next month.

Yeah, wins from the starters don’t really mean anything except that teams can only win so many games from late-inning rallies. Eventually you have to score early and semi-often if you want to win consistently. Of course, the flip side is that Lincecum and Cain could break their winless streaks at the exact same time Zito and Sanchez have a few bad starts.

… I just don’t think that win was important enough to warrant a name. Now he does that the last week of the season to propell us into the playoffs, that name could become useful

I think some people are taking my post too seriously. It was mostly a tongue-in-cheek post as a way to have fun with a fun win. I don’t think Molina’s HR changed the world, but it was a fun moment and frankly, I thought the name was funny.

Poll now closed

“Big Money Shot” shot out to an explosive lead. The voting came in spurts, but at the climactic end, it finished with 69 “oh, yes!” votes.

Voting results are often referred to as landslides, but in this case it was more of an eruption.
