I don't mean to spam, but I'd like to hear some discourse on the idea of signing Brad Penny. I think it makes some sense, but I would like to hear other opinions.

Nah. Brad Penny is meh. He has great stuff but often pitches like a soft tosser in terms of trying to pitch to contact.

He’s also crazy. I still won’t ever forget the game against the Dodgers a few years ago where Penny had to be taken out of the game (a game he had pitched well up to that point) because he allowed a double to J.T. Snow, and then got pissed that Snow got the hit, actually walked off the mound to yell at Snow, and then did it again when Snow was on 3rd and was bluffing stealing home. Penny then got even more furious when Pedro Feliz drove Snow in. After the inning, Penny came out with a supposed “back injury”. It was quite hilarious. I think he also kicked over a water cooler in the dugout after this, but I might have just imagined that.

He’s also a pretty bad teammate from the sounds of it….

Dodgers third base coach Larry Bowa responded: "You mean the same guy who was never on time, out of shape and has one complete game? He has more stuff to worry about in the A.L. East than me. He has to worry about getting people out. He was never on time, was out of shape and never helped the kids out. Put that on the (expletive) dot-com. Put it in the headline.’’

“He never watched the game (when he was on the DL). Jason Schmidt watched the games. Nomar Garciaparra watched the games. Mark Sweeney watched the games. You go right down the line, everybody who was on the DL watched the games. But not him. He was out of there.’’

What we should have done was acquired John Smoltz.

Baseball players can be asses.

He’s better than ‘meh’, he’s been a +2 win pitcher in the AL this year.

Is Brad Penny a guy that I would want to hang out with? Probably not. But he should pitch better than Joe Martinez from here on out.

Also, I don’t know if you read the piece or not, but I’m also just as interested as getting Martinez into the bullpen as a reliever and jettisoning one of Justin Miller or Merkin Valdez.

I have no faith in Martinez. None. I’d rather stick with Miller, though Valdez does nothing for me.

Jonathan Sanchez. He's left-handed, like Barry Zito. His fastball breaks 80, unlike Zito.

Almost all of Penny’s success this year was in the first half though. He’s been pretty bad since the All-Star break.

Is he better than Joe Martinez? Sure. And Penny would be a cheap acquisition, but I just don’t know that he’d be that much better. And I’m not all that sure Martinez is a better option in the pen than Miller or Valdez.

Jim Callis seems to think the Giants are crazy for not promoting Mad Bum to pitch out of the pen and for not promoting Posey, since he’s their best offensive catcher right now. You would think both could make a difference as September call-ups. The Rockies have already promoted some of their guys like Eric Young Jr and Chacin.

You don’t think Martinez is better than Merkin “Fastball” Valdez?

by xanthan on Aug 27, 2009 7:48 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

No. I think both are pretty crappy. Martinez has no outpitch. And Merkin can’t throw strikes. His fastball, despite the velocity is very straight and easily hittable.

The advanced stats seem to like Martinez more, and that’s Martinez’s starting numbers vs. Merkin’s relief numbers.

what happened to the youth movement? All out the window because we’re contending for the wild card? Keep Joe Martinez in the fifth spot so we can find out about him for 2010.

What youth movement. We signed Edgar Renteria and Randy friggin Johnson in the offseason. We should be improving the team any way we can.

Rent was signed because there was no youth to play shortstop and Randy was signed tosell tickets for his 300th win. The failure of the front office to stick to player evaluation and development and try to sign ‘established’ marginal players is not a good thing.

Utter frustration and futility.

by Johnny Disaster on Aug 27, 2009 9:11 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

I disagree. We shouldn’t sign sucky established players, but signing good players, regardless of age, when you’re trying to contend is never a bad thing.

yeah, that’s my problem with Penny. If you want to replace an iffy kid with a quality veteran like Freddy Sanchez (when he finally gets healthy) over Burriss and Frandsen, I am completely on board, but when you talk about replacing a young kid with veteran DFA’d garbage, that’s where I have to complain.

In addition to that, I see Randy Johnson as having had a positive influence on a very young pitching staff and have no desire to have some fat Dodger bastard come in and fuck things up.

Utter frustration and futility.

the point of a youth movement is to find out about GOOD YOUNG minor league prospects

You don’t just do it just to do it. Joe Martinez is fringy; I like him as our temporary 5th starter but if we can upgrade the spot, we should do it.

I would interested in Murton as a possibility next season, and Penny as fifth starter for sure. Martinez doesn’t seem to be a long-term option, so we aren’t really seeing what we’ve got with him, it’s more like he’s holding the spot for someone else, and since we obviously cannot get any better on offense, only room for improvement is starting pitching. Also, I like the argument that getting Penny will probably send Merkin back to the minors, which is where he should be right now. It can’t hurt to try out Penny

by Mrbasepaul on Aug 27, 2009 9:58 AM PDT reply actions   0 recs

No

I once exchanged heated words with Brad Penny and he’s a grade-A asshole. For my dad’s birthday a couple years ago I bought front-row tickets in the Dugout Club (or whatever it’s called now, the ones in the camera well against the screen) and we were literally 2 feet from the away on-deck circle for this game.

After Penny gave up the two HRs in the first inning he came back into the dugout, chucked the water cooler and all that stuff. So naturally when he came on-deck in the top of the second I proceeded to tear into him noting that he had some nice distance on the cooler toss and that it almost traveled as far as the home runs, nothing obscene. To my surprise he responded, telling me to “Shut the fuck up kid” and some other ramblings about how his shoulder was bothering him.

In the bottom of the second his velocity jumped 3-4mph.

So before his second AB I started ragging him about his shoulder, asking if it was suddenly all better or if he just decided to not take the night off, and he responded again. This time with, “I’m making $9 million this year (or whatever the figure was), I don’t take nights off” and gave me the bird when he took the weight off his bat.

Then he singled to right and drove in a run…

Since then he has been one of my least favorite players in the game.

Adopted brother of Jason Jarvis.

by xanthan on Aug 27, 2009 10:03 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

Being a jerk is one thing. Letting things anger you so badly that it makes you perform even worse is another. Penny has awful composure when things go wrong and it’s been one of the things that has kept him from fully realizing his potential. He’s the anti Bob Gibson.

by Hobbes2d on Aug 27, 2009 10:41 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

And yet, he’s been an above-average pitcher in his career. Even with his terrible-awful-no-good composure.

I think you’re reading too much into it.

by xanthan on Aug 27, 2009 10:44 AM PDT up reply actions   0 recs

He’s been a reasonably good pitcher while featuring outstanding stuff – his career is not the epitome of maximizing one’s talent and he is not on the upswing.
I certainly wouldn’t want him around a young pitching staff unless he was the piece needed to make the World Series a real possibility.
Not to mention pitching is hardly the thing keeping the Giants from winning games right now.
Also, I just hate the guy.

Utter frustration and futility.

My initial reaction was “DO NOT WANT!” but after looking at the numbers, he’d be a really savvy pick-up for pretty much nothing. I mean, you all know how I feel about YEAH JOEY but he hasn’t been anything more than an adequate 5th starter so far – Penny is capable of a lot better than that.

http://sports.espn.go.com/mlb/news/story?id=4426474

As Brad Penny, who was told by Boston Red Sox officials Wednesday night that he is being released, is being moved through waivers, at least three NL contenders — the Colorado Rockies, San Francisco Giants and Florida Marlins — have expressed interest in the veteran right-hander, sources said.

If I’m Penny, I cross the Coors team off of my list, since I’m looking to impress and get a contract for next year from somebody. I would think Florida is the place to be for him, since he pitched there already for a few years, but certainly ATT would be the best ballpark for a pitcher looking to show he can still get the job done.

Is he much of an upgrade over either of them though? He’s got a higher ERA than either (although SSS and he’s been starting) and his FIP looks unsustainably low. Miller’s projected to do much better than him (in ERA or FIP) whilst Valdez is projected to do similarly (Better in ERA, lower in FIP) I don’t mind having him in the bullpen but i don’t see really see him as being much of an upgrade.

Uh, no.

Nobody’s going to claim him off waivers, because they’d be on the hook for the rest of his 2009 salary (a little more than a $1M, prorated off his $5M deal).

So he’ll be a free agent after the waiver period ends on Monday.

Contract is worse than I thought. He gets an additional $500,000 for reaching each of 160, 170. 180, and 190 innings. He’s at 131 2/3, so if he pitched remotely well in his 5-6 starts in September, he’d at least get the first half million and possibly the second (if he got to the 180 innings mark, no one would complain about the cost).

What I think the Giants should do..

Yeah I hope we can add him and also Trevor Hoffman. Then that’s a guarantee that our pitching staff is one of the best, no the best in baseball. Also, is there any news on any semi-good slugger whom the giants can pick up and actually be effective I mean I liked the idea of Alex Rios coming in despite his huge contract, but what do you want a championship or a team that pays players cheaply. So hopefully we can get Penny today and Hoffman so he can teach B willy some things on pitching.
