Post-Game Thread: Giants Win a Laugher

After losing two out of three from the Rockies over the weekend, the Giants needed this. They jumped out in front early, and they never looked back, cruising to an easy win.

Now if you'll excuse me, I'm just going to change my urine-soaked jeans, and get on with my n...wait, maybe that's blood. I guess it could be bourbon.

I'm kind of looking forward to November, to be honest.

I’m just so happy about how we scored the runs. I mean, we did this thing where you take pitches and get a free base, and then we did it again, and then we did that other thing where you hit the ball really far and, like, everybody gets to run around the bases. Really – they don’t even try to tag you or anything!

Is Nate Schierholtz actually starting to get a clue at the plate? He’s walked two games in a row, and the one in the Rockies’ series was like a ten pitch at bat. Unfortunately, he’s not getting hits right now, which might cause him to abandon this new approach.

I feel the same way about licensed games, but fortunately this one is the exception to the rule. The production values are excellent, the writing is top notch, and the gameplay is solid. Every character looks way too buff for my tastes, but it’s still a nice looking game.

He was throwing hard, and had a good slider. One of the walks was on a borderline strike three, and one of the hits was just a pop up that landed between Rent and Lewis. And Roberts singled on a pretty good pitch.

I would say he was gassed. Some pitchers lose control, not velocity, when they get tired.

Please hit better, Randy Winn.

by oldjacket on Aug 26, 2009 7:39 AM PDT up reply actions

He didn't looked gas coming into the game to me

If he gets that strike three pitch or that bloop hit doesn’t find a safe place to land, no one would have said he was gassed.

My thinking is that Bochy gave Wilson a chance for an “easy” (3 -run lead) save after using him so many non-save situations lately. Saves might not mean much to us, but they clearly do to closers. He probably had given Wilson the option of resting or not.

People can crap all over Bochy, but that’s the type of thing a “player’s manager” does and the type of thing that gets players to run through a brick wall for the manager.

I was confused when Wilson came in and when he gave up the 2 out hit, I felt we were going to blow the lead. Too bad Cain didn’t win, it looks like 12 is the number of destiny. I’m not sure what the bigger surprise was, actually holding on to the lead or Nate drawing a walk.

Throwing offspeed pitches will increase his stamina since he won’t be grunting out 97mph fastballs out of the windup as often.

Straight fastballs aren’t a problem if one can complement it with a split-finger or change-up.

by hokysmksbw on Aug 26, 2009 1:17 AM PDT up reply actions

Offspeed pitches don’t increase stamina, they decrease it. Sliders, curve balls, and splitters are all much harder on the elbow than fastballs.

He's not turning into Frank Tanana.

Loading up and firing 100mph fastballs takes energy out of the entire body. Since it’s straight, throwing the splitter as his 0-2 swing-thru should be to his advantage. Add a change-up and things could work out for 6 innings.

OK, I'll just say it again

Offspeed pitches don’t increase stamina, they decrease it. Sliders, curve balls, and splitters are all much harder on the elbow than fastballs.

If it’s easier on your arm to throw a split or a change up than it is to throw a fastball, you’re simply doing it wrong. Offspeed pitches only work if they’re thrown with the same arm motion as fastballs (so the fact that fastballs are faster is irrelevant), but with a different grip, and they are always harder to throw – splitters are harder on the elbow, and change ups are harder on the shoulder. And breaking pitches are even worse.

So that leaves just Big Head. After a surprisingly good season there would be an unroar and so I doubt they have the guts to move on from him either at this point.

Didn't say he was...

…but he’d have to be significantly worse against RHP to be a platoon player.

In an ideal world, you don’t have to devote two roster spots to 1B and I think Garko certainly has the better potential to be an everyday 1B than Ishi.

I think Ishi still has a role on the team (def replacement, PH, start against tough RHP), but should continue to take balls in the OF to make himself more usefull.

"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.

by Goofus on Aug 26, 2009 11:10 AM PDT up reply actions

Well, as long as Ishi is on the team and Garko isn’t really a better hitter against righties, and Ishi is much much better on defense, that makes Garko a platoon player on this team.

And no, Travis shouldn’t be taking balls in the outfield. His value is almost entirely in his glove at first. Without that, he probably shouldn’t be in the game. There are plenty of left-handed hitters who already play outfield and adding another one won’t solve a single problem the Giants have.

GROUGTHINK ALERT
The first Chester Arthur fanboy ever.

by groug on Aug 26, 2009 11:27 AM PDT up reply actions

I agree he's a primarily a 1B

I meant that Ishi should be taking balls in the OF for his own sake.

As the team builds future rosters, he has a better chance of staying on the big team if he can also be a 5th OF.

For example :
If the team were to sign Holliday or Bay in the off-season, I could see them deciding both Lewis and Schierholtz as being redundant and moving one of them. If Ishi can play a little LF as well as 1B, he could give the GINATS BRASS flexibility to carry another infielder or pitcher.

Guys like Ishi, Uribe, Torres and even Velez make themselves more valuable when they play multiple positions.

"We're in this thing!" My adopted Giant: "Raptor Jesus" Guzman, "Sweet Jesus" Guzman and Jesus H. Guzman.

by Goofus on Aug 26, 2009 11:50 AM PDT up reply actions

I can't see any scenario where that would help him

Next year, here will be some people (presumably) ahead of Travis on the OF depth chart:

Rowand
Schierholtz
Bowker
Lewis
Velez
(if he’s still around, sorry can of corn but yes he might be gone) Torres

Bowker, Nate, and Fred are all corner outfielders who hit left-handed. Being fourth on that depth chart is like being the emergency catcher: not really something that will help him stick around.

by groug on Aug 26, 2009 11:56 AM PDT up reply actions

Bowker vs.Ishi

I could see the last roster spot coming down to Ishi or Bowker. If their bats are evaluated as equal, it could come down to the flexibilty they provide.

Ishi could potnetially lose a role on the team if management were to decide “We don’t really need Travis. He’s a backup 1B and Bowker can serve that role.”

On the other hand, if Ishi can run around LF, catch some balls and make good throws, they might say, “We don’t really need to keep a Bowker on the roster since Ishi can play LF and also play GREAT defense at 1B.”

Deciding on one of those guys lets you keep guys like Torres and Velez on the roster or an extra arm in the pen.

Just one thing

If by some miracle we make it to the playoffs, we need to wear Gigantes jerseys in every damn home game.

I choose to watch the Giants try to score runs. Not because it is easy, but because it is hard.

That’s pretty much right. But how many teams have more than four guys out of the bullpen that are really trust-worthy? Pitchers don’t, generally speaking, make themselves into a “fifth guy out of the bullpen” because they’re great pitchers.

Why it embarrassing if they’re good hitters? The Stubbs HR I get, but Rasmus is a pretty good young hitter (who has 13 HR’s this year). I have no idea who’s Garrett Jones, but he’s hit 14 home runs in just 177 at bats this year, so he’s been embarrassing a lot of pitchers.

You've inferred a meaning to what I wrote far different than what I meant, and I don't even follow you.

Grant helped me out with a lot of details for a pre-season piece I wrote on Sandoval. I guess I thought I was looking out for him (and resources I’ve used from the Pit and TBLA) in checking potential mistakes. I have that going with other writers. Mistakes happen. It’s just a good way to keep things right. It was honestly an attempt to be helpful, and I didn’t expect such a backlash.

But alas, this is not my blog, so I’ll stop trying to do any sort of quality control

Again, Grant’s statement was not incorrect. The implication of you trying to do “quality control” is that it was. The fact of the matter is that it was a joke that you didn’t get. Just say you didn’t get the joke and admit you were wrong. It isn’t all that hard to do.

However, must point out that I don’t have actual first-hand knowledge of said pants or with what they may or may not be soaked.

We can be helpful and our comments don’t always drip with sarcasm. Maybe constant sarcasm is just a Bay Area thing. Or like when people expect comedians to only ever be funny. There’s something to be said about the other extreme, too. An absence of humor can lead to statements being just as non-informative.

by Every6thDay on Aug 26, 2009 10:30 AM PDT up reply actions

Maybe not non-informative, but rather unenjoyable

which I understand and subsribe to myself. Humor is just different to different people I guess.

I am surprised that the misery of an opponent’s fanbase does not inspire joy. Perhaps Rockies fans are of a better vintage, possess a higher brow or, better yet, stronger character than Giants fans, baseball fans and/or people in general.

The quick joke is as much a pain abater as it is a joy enhancer.

by Every6thDay on Aug 26, 2009 10:50 AM PDT up reply actions

And Rockies fans certainly did take joy in the misery here Monday night and the crashing of the MCC front page. So we are of no higher brow than any other sports fan.

If it’s not your bag, then GTFO, don’t try to tell us we’re “doing it wrong”, especially when OUR SITE HAS WAYYY MORE FUCKING TRAFFIC THAN YOUR SITE.

If you want some light sparring, then by all means stay. But I don’t appreciate the insinuation that we’re stupid or unwelcoming because we like sarcastic humor, swearing, and dick jokes. DEAL W/ IT FOLKS. It’s a fun way to be.

You must be referring to others

I in no way did I ever say MCC’s ideas were wrong. Not being fully aware of the nature of the site led me to think there was a technical mistake, when the mistake was indeed my own misinterpretation. That’s all. It’s not how I write, but by all means, operate under what works. Purple Row, I believe, has more traffic than any NL West blog other than MCC, but it’s not even close for the divisional title. I also never insinuated anyone was stupid or unwelcoming for any reason, least of all anyone’s sense of humor. But for the record, “YOU SUCK” certainly isn’t welcoming.

That's part of the deal here

it’s sarcastic humor. If you don’t enjoy it, then don’t bother staying. It might just be me, but I think it’s a little douchey to go to a site and instantly think you can fix something that’s wrong with the author’s post. He was obviously making a point there, and you should have understood that from the context.

If you didn’t, again, this might not be the most enjoyable environment for you.

I can’t make you see the humor in the taking a piss out of conventional meathead message board antics, which is clearly what YOU SUCK was meant to convey.
